Re: The Perfume
I don't know whether we have the trailer somewhere "stored" in English (I have not and I do not know how to do it), but I've just found it on a French site (English version):
Comments: I captured about Perfume from VOX Spaetnachrichten.
There was a scene with AR in a court [or something like that] - it's dubbed and they don't talk about AR as actor in the movie, but I can translate what he says in the scene if you want

See, the thing about the gif is this: Notice how he raises his head as he speaks and then it suddenly goes down again? When it goes down is when I used the frames backwards to get his arm back up to the beginning without it being too jumpy . . . so that part is decieving. Whatever he said made Ben Whitshaw laugh and seemed to surprise him . . . it would be great to hear the whole conversation.
Homework Assignment: Study in detail his every lip movement in every film he's ever made and every recorded interview, looking for similar lip movements, to figure out those 3 or 4 words! Yeah! That's it!

INTJ and Ardent . Thanks too, for your info on Edinburgh and the GIF...LOVELY...Alan is so.oooo CUTE when he laughs, smiles, he seems to convulse his whole body.
I managed to see the Richard and Judy Interview with SIGGY (as she is called) .. She was very complimentary about Alan ..About Snowcake...'I felt like I was on a trapeze and Alan was always there to catch me!'
Also showed some clips from Snowcake.
Sigourney did n't seem best pleased when Richard said that she had crap reports from her stage school (in the USA )when she first started out, which was n't unusual as they said much the same about Meryl Streep....How wrong were they ?
She talked about her up-coming projects.
Don't forget to listen in to BBC Radio 4 Interview on Friday September 1st between 4.30- 5.30 PM (gmt) with Alan

From the Radio Times, this might be a programme next week which might be worth keeping an eye on...
Wednesday 6th September, BBC2, 10pm
Turn Back Time. Ruby Wax turns her critical eye on her life and career, revealing why she was so bad with boys, why she never made it as a classical actress, how she wished she had listened to her parents' financial advice and her disappointment at failing to crack the USA. Dara O'Briain provides the shoulder to cry - with laughter - on. Features strong language. Could we be in line for a few Rickman-related anecdotes?

Thanx to INTJ for the report on Edinburgh, sounds great !
Unfortunately having been out of the picture lately I missed out on tickets for the charity screening of Snowcake and the Q & A with OoOA on the 5th. I knew it would sell out really fast , so am very envious of Sue, Hikity, Peekabooh, Elaine and anyone else who is going ! Look forward very much to hearing all about it you lucky things !
I really hope Snowcake goes on general release. It looks absolutely fascinating and I can't wait to see it .
Hopefully 2007 will be an AR year for me because due to circumstances beyond my control I have missed AR at Reading, London , Edinburgh and now Hampstead !
BTW Alanfan I used to live in Grimsby and Cleethorpes and I know what you mean by a lack of cinemas or any other entertainment for that matter !!!!

I'm disappointed that Snow Cake might not get to cinemas in general. Is there a way of contacting the distributor's and finding out just which cinemas are going to be allowed to get the film or if it's going to have a DVD release like Blow Dry did? The nearest big cinema to me is in Hull so there is very little chance of it coming up here
Comments: Sorry Marta...I don't speak or know how to read Spanish. Went to your site, but could not seem to do anything with it. I really tryed to understand some of the words. But sadly could not vote in his favor. Certainly did not want to guess which choise was a good one. I would have told them I would bow at his feet, spit polish his shoes, kiss the ground he walks on...well...maybe if he was on a red carpet or something. Even stars have pets they walk and who knows where those shoes where last?! Oh Pooh! Did I say that? It is midnight here.....zzzz.....getting slaphappy . You know I probably would at least take a good roll on the carpet he just walked on....if no one was looking. Aw yes to be where he was... hemmmm....it's late. Got to go to bed. Good night. I will try to dream of red carpets all night ....LOL

Sarah, I don't think Snowcake is the kind of film that's going to make all the Muliplexes. Every Thursday the London Evening Standard reviews all th films released that week but many never appear to get into the local cinemas. Blow Dry is a prime example, it had about a week in a couple of London cinemas then completely disappeared. If it gets good reviews it might get out to the suburbs but if not you'll have to probaby look for more specialist cinemas and they are few and far between. My local Odeon has no mention of it in coming soon and yet it has a single showing of the Richard E Grant film Wah-Wah next week and that was released some weeks ago, so maybe Snowcake will get some kinf of release. Actually just googling most of my local cinemas, very few of them have a coming soon list so maybe they just wait and see at the last moment what looks like it might do well?

Hi there
I've just watched the report about The Perfume. AR's scene was seconds and the one we all know (sitting opposite of his daughter telling her how endangered her life is now). The synthesis of the report: those who love the book should NOT see the film (the reason being the "new" character of Grenouille(, those who love opulent cinema, costumes and TT's cinematic qualities should see the film by all means...(btw: it's the most expensive German film every directed)
now you can decide what to do

Sue, DW-tv is the German equivalent to BBC World Service. I think it's mainly news, which could mean that they might mention something after the day of the premiere, but I don't have the slightest idea whether they actually would. I wouldn't be too astonished if they considered film premieres as too trivial.
Whilst delving in the lower reaches of Sky today looking for something else I came upon a German speaking channel called DWtv. Is this something you know of in Germany and if so, is it worth looking for Parfum stuff on??

Catsplay, they are famous German actors and actresses and they all praise SC (and AR and SW). FYI, ZDF (=Second German Television)(and the ARD channels for that matter  are our independent broadcasters.

If anyone cares, the six minute trailer that was removed from the Fortissimo site is now available on Outnow.ch
Looking around on the ZDF site this morning I came across this 12+ minute video which I think says is from the Snow Cake after party at the Berlinale. No sign of SW or AR, but a lot of people are interviewed. I believe they are all speaking in German. I can't tell whether they are really talking predominantly about Snow Cake or not.
INTJ and Catsplay, a lot of thanks, you are fantastic.
Yesterday, there was a really interesting report about Perfume on ZDF (quite late), which showed parts of the film we haven't yet seen (no AR). The secenery is absolutely great - I am so much looking forward to seeing the making of next week.
For all Germans if interested: I posted about a week ago that tomorrow (Sunday) evening there will be another report on TV - have to check again, which programme it was - forgot it , sorry

Thanks INTJ. I've always felt that direct flash, especially the super powerful direct flash used by the professional photographers at events like this, is very, very harsh and can actually misrepresent reality.

Thanks CatsPlay, Peek, AFNH, Hikity, Sue, Carolyn, SnoKat, Chris, Vera, Dee, Nahima, Vicki, Laura, Juliet, Claudia (I hope I haven't forgotten anyone), for your kind words. I'm glad you all enjoyed the report and pics. : )
Dee (of course I don't mind your asking) - His clothes looked *so* different in reality, not at all like in many of the photos. For example, the pair of trousers he was wearing had exactly the same colour as his jacket - a deep black. I was absolutely astonished to see how strange they look in a lot of the pics taken at the premiere. (The photos published on the WENN website are the worst, imo.) In many, they appear to have an almost purplish hue to them - which, let me assure you, was not the case. To the normal eye, this is what his clothes looked like:
Deep black jacket, dark blue denim shirt, and deep black trousers. He was very smartly dressed, and his outfit looked lovely in person. There was nothing that jumped out at you or made you raise your eyebrows in a "what on earth is he wearing" kinda way. On the contrary. He looked very smart in his clothes (the unbuttoned cuffs didn't detract from that ; ) ), trim, and extremely handsome.
As for getting an autograph - nope. I didn't want one. (To be honest, I've never really understood why people want autographs... I don't see the appeal, I'm afraid.)
Oh, and sorry about the Herald file, everyone. I've just uploaded it to yousendit:
Sorry to cause trouble, but I really have a problem with downloading your file on sendmefile. *sniffles* I tried to download it for hours, and everytime the download tells me I need between 72 to 190 hours. I get a dataflow from about 0.01kb
Is there a chance that you can upload the file to another service? Help, please?
Hugs.

I lived in London between the Acton Town and Ealing Borough tube stops for a year from 1993-1994. Wish I could be there now!!
Texas is fun but too hot right now and driving is a necessity here. I loved riding the tube every day and was a skinny little thing when I came home. All that EXERCISE every single day!

Hey there,
Im a newbie, massive Rickman fan and have been coming on here for ages,I just thought that you guys would like to know that SW was on a programme here talking about Snowcake (which I cannot wait for)and she mentioned Alan a few times, she said that it was him who sent her the script(which we all knew) and that he was the kind of actor who would let you go all the way and be there to catch you when you fall,in those kind of words...she was very nice about him and they showed a couple of clips, some of the trailor..the clips were of the garbage and indoors....
Nice Interview if only the two of them would just be quite....
Hope that helps,I will come back, you guys all seem like a nice lot and I love this site....

INTJ! Thanks so much for making my Friday soooo fantastic! Your reviews of SC and MNiRC are great and I enjoyed reading them very much. Kudos to you for knowing when to keep your distance. You were absolutely right in not wanting to agitate him anymore than what the eBay fleabags were doing. Thank you again so much for sharing your pics with us and I can't wait until you can get your video sorted out! You are wonderful, gal! Oh and the Herald video is great too. I tried and tried but never could get it but I knew we could count on you.
Your description of the Q&A was fantastic!!! I loved how he was so concerned about the audience member that couldn't relay his question. If other things come to you, please remember to let us know.
Thanks for the translation Vera. I don't know what we would do without you, Hikity, RickiNicki, Chalebh and the others that do our German translations for us.
sue....we are NEVER bored of new pics of AR!!!! Silly girl! Thanks for the SC images. My gawwwwd he looks sooo good. I can't wait for this film! (how many times have I told yall that???? *snort*)
janeway, Vicki, and others having problems downloading INTJ's clip, I had a bit of a problem getting the video too but I think its because the host's server is so busy. If you click on the download and let it sit it should eventually start up. Just be patient with it. If you're still having problems later, I'll upload them to the server and post a link.
Juliet, thanks for the link for The Old Laundry. They used an excellent pic of him, don't you think? Its nice to know he's still supporting them. Maybe he'll do another benefit for them soon. *crossing fingers*
Chalebh, thanks for the Perfume video link and Laura for capturing it. Again, I don't know what we'd do without yall! I agree with Hikity in that the dubbed voice of AR isn't to bad at all.

Chalebh, Vicki, I just watched the clip and I have to admit that AR's dubbed voice is by far the best I've heard by now. Usually, actors get the same dubbed voice over endless years (like Jonny Depp, Heath Ledger, Mel Gibson, DH, old John Wayne and thousand other famous ones), so that you immediately recognize them (but would never know their original voices, haha). However, with our Man it's different (may be because he is not that famous here - at least before HP was released). Obviously, TT and BE have given it a thought and searched for someone with a richer and deeper voice - that's progress, indeed. But Vicki, how CAN their POSSIBLY be a similar voice in this world, hmmm???
Dee, I had the same thoughts, but to be honest, I gave up some time ago

That was an excellent film clip, Chalebh!...even though I didn't understand a word (well, maybe one or two). Thanks for the link. There is a wonderful shot of AR in his wig and he's laughing. He looks great. It would make a great gif icon if somebody knows how to do it. Too bad the guy who dubs AR's voice in German doesn't have that sexy, baritone quality that makes all us hens go....

Wow, thanks guys for the new pictures. I dont know about you guys ( ok, actually I do) but I cant wait till this movie comes out and i already think its going to be one of my favorites.
Oh, and by the way. Is it just me or does it look like in that picture thats posted by Sue that Alex ( Alan ) is about to "pet the puppie"! He looks like he wants and she looks like she is going to let him and like it. Great picture.

Comments: INTJ - Thank you so much for sharing your trip. You were SO close to him! egads... I have a few questions, if you don't mind...?
Alan is always handsome, but please tell me -- did his red carpet outfit look better in person? I really don't understand the denim shirt (unbuttoned cuffs), mismatched jacket/pants. But, I know that often his outfits look much more stylish in person.
Forgive me if I should know this -- but was this the first time you've ever seen him? Did you get your autograph?
The one movie screencap made me smile -- in the series of four, top left, him and CAM. They are bundled up in coats, scarves, gloves, and there's a man standing behind them in the upper left corner wearing just a shirt with sleeves rolled up! It was that Wawa heatwave!
The screen cap of him laughing is so lovely...
Thanks again for sharing. I'm so happy you had a good time!

Hello ladies, I'm back from Edinburgh and finally getting around to telling you about my time there. I've been spending the last couple of days fighting with my memory card which my computer claims is corrupted , so I haven't been able to extract any of my video files yet, and only a handful of pics.
Anyway, last Tuesday I attended the Snow Cake premiere at the Dominion in Edinburgh. As I had arrived very early, I was able to secure a great spot in the front row along the right side of the red carpet and had an excellent view of Alan arriving with Sigourney Weaver around 6:35 p.m. You have all seen the pics by now - he looked fantastic, very trim, and seemed quite relaxed even though he soon got mobbed by autograph hunters and professional eBay sellers who wanted him to sign piles of pictures (including Snape ones), which, of course, he refused to do - he gave each of those guys a very pained, very brief, half-smile and very politely but firmly stated, "I don't sign Harry Potter pictures, I'm afraid." As they kept pestering him, I did not approach him, not wanting to add to his discomfort, so I simply watched and observed. The press were out in force at the premiere (I stopped counting the photographers and reporters after reaching 100), and Alan went about signing pics for the odd fan and giving interviews for television amid a flurry of camera flashes. He eventually ended up sitting down on the red carpet with Sigourney Weaver and Marc Evans before being ushered downstairs to the Dominion bar for a special reception for invited guests, amongst them J.K. Rowling.
Everyone was taking or already had taken their seats at this point (300 unreserved, 200 reserved seats for press and invited guests), so I rushed inside. About 15 minutes later, Shane Danielson, the artistic director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, walked on to the stage in front of the screen to welcome everyone to the UK gala premiere and first screening of Snow Cake - "a film that I love", as he said - and then introduced Marc Evans who in turn - remarking that they were great pals and really great actors, fantastic to work with and that this was not his, but *their* film - introduced Alan and Sigourney Weaver to great applause and cheers. The artistic director then announced that there was going to be a Q&A following the screening of Snow Cake; they all left the stage and returned to the bar, leaving the audience to enjoy Snow Cake...which is an excellent, incredibly moving, funny, hopeful and brilliantly acted film! As the end credits were rolling and Alan, Sigourney Weaver, and Marc Evans were walking on to the stage again, they received a standing ovation, loud cheers and thundering applause.
The Q&A was lovely, although many of the questions asked were not exactly new ones (was the role of Alex written with Alan in mind; was it difficult working without being able to maintain eye contact with SW's character; what made him want to do Snow Cake, etc.). There were three moments that were particularly lovely: one - when someone in the audience asked a question that no one could hear, Alan left the stage, walked over to the guy and handed him his microphone; two, Sigourney telling the audience that she "would do the phone book with Alan if he asked me to"; and three, the final question, which was not a question but a comment, really, by a lady working with autistic people who thanked AR, SW and ME for this accurate, unsentimental and much-needed portrayal, for making the movie and "giving a new face to autism" - a comment which moved AR, SW and ME very much. Once they had left the stage (again thundering applause), I hurried outside, quickly enough to see Alan and Sigourney getting into a car that had been waiting for them and being driven off.
The next day I attended "MNiRC" which, like Snow Cake the day before, was sold out. It was an amazing performance, and I want to point out that the clip that was shown on "The Edinburgh Show" does not do Josephine Taylor's performance justice (the clip, to me, looks like it was recorded during rehearsal). It is a very powerful play, very thought-provoking, impressive and inspiring. As I had a feeling that Alan might attend the performance that evening, I kept my eyes peeled for him - and about three minutes before the play began there he was, quitely walking up the steps to the very last row of seats. After the performance had ended, a group of Festival officials plus acquaintances/friends were waiting for him, all heading to another part of the huge courtyard of the Pleasance Courtyard Theatre with him. I ended up walking behind them (although I was keeping a respectful distance as I didn't want to intrude) and then was able to watch Alan give the interview for "The Edinburgh Show" from the other side of that sandstone wall you can see behind him in the video Sue (and a few others) so kindly recorded and uploaded (thank you!). : ))
I had an absolutely wonderful time. : )) Here are the pics I was able to extract from my memory card:
Oh, and I snagged the flash video from the Herald website and converted it to avi (15MB):

Comments: I personally cannot WAIT to hear Alan Rickman do the voice of a Hamster. Just think, Alan Rickman and Brian Blessed. Sexist voice or loudest...who will win. I think there will have to be a great deal of shouting going on for Brian Blessed to be in it. Though he was fairly quiet most of the time as Augustus in I Claudius. Alan can shout pretty well too, though. I'm going to overdose on AR when all of this stuff happens.
Ann, the premiere in Berlin will take place on 8 September at 8 p.m. at the CineStar at the Potsdamer Platz. According to a newspaper article, Alan Rickman is confirmed to attend.

I used to go to Dallas for Six Flags, but that was when I was younger and my family was still together. My grandmother knows where to shop, so I got two gorgeous pair of shoes real cheap, so yay! Wish Alan could see them...ha, he probably wouldnt care. Everyone, I was thinking that It would be cool if for some reaso Alan and I were on the same plane...maybe even sitting next to each other. I would die. And then I was thinking that if they cast you, Mariam, in Robin Hood that would be cool because of your name...You would get to work with Alan. Haha. I'm sure other people here have names that are in some of his movies, but this just came to mind.

Sue, as quickly as possible, forgive the mistakes - or worse - errors:
It's one of the top-class and most promising mixtures of the cinema year 2006:...the article talks about Bernd Eichinger and TT, then gives a summery on the book. Furthermore, it tells us about general problems directors face when making a film of a famous book. The readers know about the characters, how they think and act and that they believe the actors in the film will convey these things etc. the article highly praises the film because of the love for detail and the great talents acting Both DH and AR prove their status as a Hollywood star.
With regard to scent and sense of smell the critic says that the (German) narrator who has a cuddly and slightly coarse voice should have intervened more often during the very long phases of these shots where the camera drives into the nose (  , where Grenouille walkes behind people sniffing etc. While the beginning and the end are faithful to the book, the middle has some changes, e.g. only 13 girls instead of 25 (in the book) are killed because of their scents. The readers can get over this minor change, however, they won't like the change of Grenouille into a more friendly role...Grenouille is supposed to be insideous and full of hatred for his contempories, ugly and limping. But in the film he is more or less a good looking guy. Unfortunately, the film does not really convey the central metaphor of the book: the tick . Moreover, the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment and its reduction to absurdity - a significant aspect of the book - has not been worked out well enough. Due to the fact that the film is free from 12 years onwards the orgiastic and orgastic bacchanalia as the absolute highlight of the book is no more than a mass hugging suitable for kids' TV - this has taken off the intensity of the film...
All in all the cinematic interpretion has not exactly hit the nerv of the literary plot - too well-behaved. It's an indulgence for the eyes on the one hand and a delicate disappointment for all "connoisseurs" of the novel.
WHAT A PITY - Children are allowed - absolutely daft - the reason for this is a good question...

Hikity, my bet would be that he might appear by the end or mid in the festival since there's no schedule yet about when SC will be shown in that festival so it might not be at the beginning of the festival; I also saw that SW and C-AM are listed. Ladies, I forgot to mention....There's singing in it, too!!!! There are some good song choices that really fit the play:
Act One: Lovely to Look At.....Blue Moon....These Foolish Things Remind Me of You
Act Two: They Can't Take That Away From Me
Now, he doesn't sing all the songs completely. It's kind of a "tit for tat" thing with Anna, and Kate also jumps in occasionally.
OMG! I am just so psyched for this!
Interesting thought.....That Roundabout is/was planning on a revival of LLD in the spring of 2007!

Live acting — it’s just not an easy job
MORE SPOILERS
From Bennettarium 16 June 2005
Harold Pinter’s Old Times portrays unsettling mind games played amongst a middle-aged couple and a visiting friend from their separate pasts. Last weekend I saw the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of this classic play.
Deeley and Kate play host to Anna, Kate’s old friend. Almost from the beginning, Anna seems to engage Deeley in a contest for Kate’s intimacy, almost like a grown-up version of a schoolyard “bestest friend” competition. Anna mixes up the past and present while Deeley looks frustratedly on. But in the end it looks as if Anna is not in control after all.
In a way, Kate and Anna seem to be different aspects of the same person. The play expresses Deeley’s battle to repress Kate’s wilder side. Maybe Anna doesn’t really exist after all, other than as a personification of Kate’s untamed past. The presentation of the play encourages such musings.
In this production, the lighting was very effective, fading in and out to accentuate the long pauses. I also have to mention an unplanned moment of hilarity. In one of the long, Pinteresque silences, just while Anna was about to declare how lovely and quiet the house is, a mobile phone in the audience started playing its “Ride of the Valkyries” ringtone. William Zappa (as Deeley) then had to talk about the “silence” with a straight face.
Anna: You must be able to hear the sea from here. Deeley (with a wry smile): Yes — if you listen very, very carefully.
Our mirth was unrestrained at this point. The actors clearly saw the joke, but they bravely stuck to the text and pulled us back into the play. Live acting — it’s just not an easy job.
I had previously seen Pinter’s Victoria Station some years ago in Edinburgh. That was very entertaining, though Pathos crept in towards the end. Old Times is much more fully-rounded, more thought-provoking, and quite frankly, more confusing. And that’s just the way I like my plays.

I just love this:
This book is a member of that series of plays called "theatre of the absurd." For the most part, the average reader will not understand what's going on. The play deals with one married couple and a visitor who joins and leaves the action of the scene periodically. This is about reminiscing the past and interpreting it. The main focus is how people can not communicate with one another. The more you read it, the more you understand it, but it is very subjective. Only mature readers and theatrically-educated people will appreciate it.
and another review:
a strange and absurd story, 17. Januar 2000
There are three persons who talk about their past. But the point is that they don't really talk about old times. Everyone tells things that happened in the past and no one knows if they are true. Those things have no context. They are a lot of sexual hints by Deeley. Also strange is that Deeley didn't tell his wife that he already knows Anna. We don't recommend this book because we didn't understand well the sense of the story. In this story you have to read between the lines, and it could happen that even then you are not able to understand the play.
Cheers

SPOILER
In a whitewashed farmhouse somewhere by the sea, three people digest the casserole they had for dinner and reminisce about the past. Anna, the guest, once shared a flat with Deeley´s wife Kate, and rhapsodies nostalgically about their innocent youth as London secretaries, going to concerts, listening shyly in artists´cafes, playing records of Gershwin and Kern. Constrained but affable, Deeley joins her in a contest of memory, singing off-key, antiphonal snatches of the songs of the forties, while Kate smiles at them silently. Its familiar soil: strangers trying to wrench a common ground of cliche from disparate pasts. Then something goes wrong with the conversation. You have a wonderful casseroleí says Anna, slightly too warmly. Deeley looks baffled. I´m so sorry, she apologises, blushing and smiling at her Freudian slip. I meant wife. You have a wonderful wife. She was always a good cook. Sometimes we would make an enormous stew for supper, gobble it up, and then, more often than not, sit up half the night reading Yeats.
Anyone with an ear for Harold Pinter´s dialogue will recognise the territory on to which his new play Old Times, at the Aldwych, shifts with those lines. A gauntlet has been thrown down. Battle is engaged. The battleground is Kate: which of the two, Deeley or Anna, has possessed more of her? The weapons, as usual, are sex and language: the language of innuendo, cultural discomfiture, the slight verbal excess staking an emotional claim. Truth has nothing to do with it. More often than notí? Really? The winner will be the one who can impose his or her version of the past. Ana has made her opening thrust. Kate cooks for Deeley. With her, she read poetry. It would make life neater for all those graduate students laboring over Pinter theses if one of them could prove that his first, favorite book had been Henry James Sacred Fount, with its twin theories that, in love, there is always one who eats and one who is eaten, and that truth is a question of who offers the more stylish scenario. But Old Times all too clearly is simply a natural growth of his own talent.
Within the same triangular frame of memory as Silence, it mixes the sexual ambiguities of The Collection with the territorial wars of dominance which underlay The Homecoming. Growth seems a better word than advance. The techniques, the preoccupations are the same. There´s no new departure from the ground he has made his own. But he mastery of it is more stunning than ever, the economy even more perfect. Wonderfully taut, comic and ominous, Old Times shows Pinter more and more himself and less like any other playwright writing today.
More clearly than before, it takes the form of a duel: a game of skill top the death. One after the other, the adversaries offer their blows to the body. Brutally, Deeley tells how he picked up Kate in a cinema showing Odd Man Out, walked her home and bedded her. Anna listens smiling, with no more belief than Mick in The Caretaker gave to Davies story of his papers as Sidcup. Then it is her turn, and she has a double riposte. Funny how vividly you imagine what you think happened isnít it, whether it happened or not? She has a memory is it real?- of a man who cried in Kate´s bed. But of course it is unreal beside her memories of their life together: poring over the Sunday papers, rushing out to old films at suburban cinemas like Odd Man Out.
It´s like watching a marvelous skilled game of cricket or tennis. What kind of ball will they send over next? How will the receiver parry it? Deeley has more crude power he is Kate´s husband, isn´t he? but he flusters more easily, being Irish, and lacks Annaís patient finesse. She has the authority of money and culture (a husband and villa in Sicily, a velvet glove of good tempered gentility to mask her steely determination), and Kate´s vague, smiling passivity seems to be on her side. But much as Pinter enjoys games, they arenít what he writes about. As in The Homecoming, the final, devastating victory belongs to neither battler, but to the woman battled over. People are not prizes to be won in tournaments. They belong to themselves.

Comments: Alfan, check this RoyalCourt site out. Be warned though that it revelas all the play. Pinter is a "difficult" writer but worth the effort. I saw The Caretaker with the late great Leonard Rossiter, John Hurt and Jeremy Kemp way back in 1972 and I can still remember it, that's what great theatre is all about.

Now that I've been able to catch my breath about the latest news, my thoughts have turned to the play itself:
I'm going to assume, w/o knowing, that the "powers that be" originally wanted Lindsay Duncan for the role of Kate, Deeley's (Alan Rickman's character) wife. IMHO, though, I would love to see her in the role of Kate's friend, Anna, who has these absolutely subtextual repartees with AR. It is such a great play, again, one with so many layers of emotion, and the character of Deeley is perfect for our guy!
This must be the season of Harold Pinter. Another one of his plays, "The Homecoming", is also on the boards for the fall.

A new "Old Times" is in the works at the Roundabout, with Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan primed to star in Harold Pinter's 1970 play at Studio 54 this fall.
Nothing's confirmed yet, but if things work out, the Broadway revival of "Old Times" would join a Roundabout season that includes an Off Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' "Suddenly, Last Summer," starring Blythe Danner and Carla Gugino, that's set for the fall.
One factor holding back "Old Times": Production has not yet secured an actress to play the third role in Pinter's ambiguous tale about a married couple visited by an old friend. It's said Lena Olin passed, and there's also talk of Duncan changing her mind about which female role she wants to play.
Rickman's last foray on the Rialto, the Roundabout's 2002 revival of "Private Lives," also co-starred Duncan ("Rome"), who won a Tony for her perf. The duo starred together in both the original London production and the 1987 Broadway stint of Christopher Hampton's "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," a revival on the Roundabout's Broadway slate for the American Airlines Theater in the spring.
A fall run of "Old Times" would have Rickman onstage in Gotham around the same time as his upcoming Off Broadway production of "My Name Is Rachel Corrie," based on the diaries of a young woman who died protesting Israel's demolition of Palestinian homes. Rickman is co-adaptor of the "Rachel Corrie" script and will also direct the controversial show, which originated at the Royal Court in London in 2005 and bows at the Minetta Lane on Oct. 15.
Helmed by Mark Brokaw, "Suddenly, Last Summer" begins perfs at the Laura Pels Theater on Oct. 20 for a Nov. 15 opening. Danner stars as a widow mourning the mysterious death of her son, while Gugino plays a cousin who makes shocking allegations.
After "Suddenly," the Pels will see the Doug Hughes-helmed production of Patrick Marber's "Howard Katz," starring Alfred Molina, beginning Feb. 2 for a March 8 opening. That will be followed by director Joe Dowling's production of the latest from Brian Friel, "The Home Place," in the late spring/summer.
Along with "Liaisons," the Roundabout's Broadway slate includes "Heartbreak House" this fall at the American Airlines, plus the tuner "110 in the Shade," starring Audra McDonald, skedded for spring at Studio 54.

I'm fortunate my son doesn't have any obsessions that upset him like that. He obsesses over video games but he usually just talks endlessly about "Sonic beat Eggman by..." He'll start sentences about this in the middle of a thought. He'll talk to an 18 month old child and a 90 year old adult about exactly the same thing in the same tone of voice without having a clue that these people can't understand. LOL.
I have a friend whose high functioning autistic son has to check all the drawers and cabinet doors to make sure they're closed properly.
I think it will be really interesting to see Snow Cake and know that Alan and his character are learning about autism at the same time. He said he purposely didn't educate himself, but through making the film he must have learned something about it.

Just found a nice article on Snowcake on Channel4.com:
Alan Rickman And Marc Evans On Snowcake
Hungover in Edinburgh, the star and director of this drama about autism discuss Sigourney Weaver, Super Furry Animals and not making Rainman II
"I'm drinking a bloody Mary. I'm told it will do me some good."
It's midday in a hotel lounge and Marc Evans is hungover. This is forgivable, as last night saw the UK premiere of his new movie, Snowcake, the wine was flowing at the party afterwards and he ended up drinking with Steve Coogan until 5am. And, goddamit, this is the sixtieth Edinburgh International Film Festival: it's practically illegal not to have booze for breakfast.
"It's a fantastic festival, one of my favourites," he enthuses, eyes sparkling as the vodka works its magic. "And Edinburgh's great anyway. I'm very proud to be Welsh but I'm very jealous Scotland has got such an amazing capital city."
If Alan Rickman is feeling any ill effects from the party, he's certainly hiding it well. Immaculately dressed in a dark grey suit, he is as sombre and intimidating as he is on screen. The part he plays in Snowcake - a dour curmudgeon with a nice line in sarcastic put-downs - was written with him in mind. Does he ever worry that the public's perception of him is, well, pretty close to Phil Cornwell's impersonation of him in 'Dead Ringers'?
"I don't watch 'Dead Ringers'," he rumbles in what seems like irritation but, thankfully, is followed up by an amused laugh. "Public perceptions are what they are and you can't think about it. I'm sure anybody who has any kind of public persona would say that it's not a lot to do with the real person. I just get on with it really."
Just getting on with it, Rickman turns in yet another masterful performance in Snowcake. Without giving too much away, he plays a British man who, just out of prison in Canada, winds up staying in a small town in Northern Ontario where he takes a lover (Carrie-Anne Moss) and moves in with Alice, an acutely autistic woman played by Sigourney Weaver. It's quite a departure for Evans, best known for dark and doomy fare like My Little Eye, House Of America and Resurrection Man.
"It wasn't a conscious decision to change," says Evans. "It was more having the opportunity to get to do something different and fresh. What was nice about this was that I was offered the project because Baby Cow, Steve Coogan and Henry Normal's production company, were involved. I have to be really thankful to them for that because I wouldn't have been sent that script normally because you get typecast. People think I just do dark stuff."
As well as being a challenge for Evans, for Rickman it meant acting opposite Weaver who, having immersed herself in the role of Alice, unnervingly refused to look him in the eye.
"Actually, I think it made it easier," Rickman explains. "It was like being with a real autistic person and she has rules that you have to abide by. But it was a learning thing basically - I was the happy recipient of all of Sigourney's hard work."
Both Evans and Rickman are full of praise for Weaver, who worked flat out to get her performance perfect. But comparisons with that other autistic movie, Rainman, jokingly referenced in Snowcake, must have been a source of worry.
"No," claims Evans. "I felt really safe. Angela [Pell], who wrote the script, has an autistic kid, a little boy called Johnny, and she did something really smart by not making it a film about an autistic child. By transferring it to an adult setting she could get a little distance. And Sigourney, as you'd expect, came to the film with this massive desire to get it right. So, in a way, the autism was taken care of for me."
He's still aware, though, that autism might be difficult for audiences to accept.
"If Al Pacino plays blind, everybody knows what blindness is," is his way of putting it. "I'm not saying there's no complexity to being blind, I'm just saying that you can recognise it as an audience. But if someone plays an autistic character, there's a spectrum. They could be the Rainman-style savant or completely dysfunctional or everything in between. I think what you have to do is latch onto a specific character and that's what we did."
To help Weaver find the character, Evans employed an autistic woman called Roz Blackburn.
"She's an amazing person. She has autism but is able to comment on autism, which is rare. She's happy with the film and, basically, if Roz thinks it's okay, then that's good enough for me."
Another essential ingredient to the movie is its Canadian setting which, for once, isn't standing in for the USA. Filming took place in the town of Wawa, where the cast and crew stayed for the entire 27-day shoot. Rickman was especially pleased to be in Canada, a country he describes as his second home.
"It's an incredibly beautiful country but then so are many places in the world," he says. "It's just that I have very close friends and a goddaughter in Toronto. But I'd certainly never been to Northern Ontario before. We had a great time after we finished because we went across to Victoria and Vancouver Island."
For Evans, Canada was a mystery, especially when it came to the music. Sheepishly, he admits to placing a track by Welsh band The Super Furry Animals pride of place on the soundtrack. Fellow countrymen The Stereophonics also feature.
"The Stereophonics were in the script," he insists. "Angela is a vinyl junkie like myself and she was very specific about some of the music. But the Super Furries track I was responsible for. It just seemed the perfect song for Alex's state of mind, letting in the sunshine and all that."
In his defence, Evans did ask Emily Hampshire, who plays Alice's teenage daughter, to compile a CD of Canadian bands.
"On that CD was 'Anthem For A Seventeen Year Old Girl' by Broken Social Scene," he says. "So that song was in the film from a very early stage because I loved it so much. When we were looking to do the score, John Cale [Welsh member of The Velvet Underground who has featured in two documentaries by Evans] suggested asking Broken Social Scene, so I do feel that I paid my respects to Canadian music too."
It is a fantastic soundtrack (and it provides a hilarious scene where Rickman wails along to the Stereophonics on headphones). Though dealing with disability and grief, Snowcake manages to be uplifting without becoming mawkish. Evans is quick to praise his actors and the first-rate screenplay from Pell.
"Angela has great way of looking at her son's condition. Autism is a horrible condition but she latches onto the positives of it as well, because if you have an autistic child then you have to. At the centre of the film there's a kind of optimism which rubs off on Alan's character. People might think it's going to depress the hell out of them but it's not depressing at all."
Rickman concurs, evidently pleased to have been involved in such a good movie. Does he think he might, finally, get an Oscar nomination?
"Oh, I don't think about that side of things. It's very nice if people want to give you a piece of metal to put on your shelf and it helps sell the film. But it's a little crazy too: there's a whole world going on out there."

Marlene - All I know is that with my old computer, when I saved an animated gif file, it didn't move. Now, with my new computer, they do. It must have something to do with software, but I'm not sure which software.
If you want to use it in email, a webpage, etc. you can put it in a Photobucket account (that's where mine is). They're free and you can collect animated emoticons there if you want (as I do). Then you just copy and paste from there. I'll see if I can find out anything more about it. Or maybe someone else here can help? There are lots more computer-savvy than I here!

Comments: So what do they mean by "limited" release. Looks like it will be in theaters on 12/25 in limited release. Will it make it to Dallas? I mean some limited release films do. I know The Aristocrats was limited release and we saw that. If you haven't seen it, it's a documentary about the telling of one filthy joke by many comics. It's not a joke they tell on stage, only to each other to make each other laugh. It's an extremely old tradition and everyone tries to out do each other on the offensiveness of it. So, if you're easily offended you won't want to see it. Anyway, do all "limited" release films make it to Dallas?

Hikity, Steve Coogan is famous over here for his weird characters, the most famous of which is Alan Partridge, a truly cringe-making radio dj who doesn't know how awful he is in Knowing Me, Knowing You, I'm Alan Partridge. My husband thinks he's hilarious but I find a little goes a long way, I have never been a big fan of the "theatre of embarassment".

Vera - I will try and keep an eye if I recognise the places when they show it in the film, I haven't been in that castel as far as I remember but well I guess it might not be that hard since it's not that small so my guess would probably be that they will use the inside. To me, it's the best Alan Rickman screenshot I've seen in a long time! I also LOVE the wrinkly-face he does in "Making of Mesmer" when the interviewer asks him "Isn't this your day off?"

TGIF everyone!
Good news on the Perfume news!
More thanks for all the pics and links.
This has nothing to do with AR since he isn't an American citizen but since we have discussed the "goody" bags the stars and presenters get for the Emmys and Oscars when AR has been up for an award, I thought this was quite interesting.
Comments: Thanks you Sue for the link to the video, I hadn't seen it before coz it didn't work Sorry for you Chaleb Do you know the distributor's name of Perfume please ? I'd like to contact them to know if there will be a premiere in Paris with AR

Ok, folks. Today is not my day. Bad weather in Frankfurt and an aching hand because of a bee sting yesterday.
I have to change my post about news about Perfume another time.
The world premiere is in Munich, September 7th (this info is hidden in the articlein subordinate clause).
No infos if Alan or others will be in Munich.
As I mentioned below, the big party will be in Berlin with Alan (at least the article says so).
Have a nice weekend

Here are bunch of news and other information about The Perfume - including a couple of tiny spoilers.
Today the September issue of the film magazine “Cinema” was released, and it contains an interview with Tom Tykwer and a review of the film. There are no photos of Alan Rickman, else I would have scanned them, but there are a couple of interesting information.
Tom Tykwer says that the most difficult part was to make sure that the audience will not turn away from Grenouille, no matter how much he might act against the audience's morale. He's interested in creating films that cause a physical experience, and he wants the audience to get the feeling that they need to fasten the seat-belts. He mentions the birth scene at the fish market right at the beginning, and I assume that also means that the sex orgy and other crass scenes won't be toned down.
The critic praises the film and claims it's Tom Tykwer's best film so far. Just a few quotes: "pictures like paintings", "opulent", "aesthetic and provocative". The critic also mentions that Tom Tykwer stays true to the novel.
I also bought a copy of the book “Auf den Spuren von Patrick Süskinds 'Das Parfum'” by Oliver Mittelbach, which I mentioned before. It's a kind of travel guide that offers information on the (historical) places that are mentioned in the book, the places where the film was shot and on the film shooting itself. There are many photos of these places, but none of the actual shooting.
Nevertheless, the author mentions some lovely details. For the shooting in Catalonia 5.000 extras were needed - among them real butchers, glassblowers, jugglers and artists. He also mentiones some tidbits, e.g. that one street in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona was flooded with mud so that it would look authentic. The scenes at Richis' house were filmed at the Parc del Labirint d'Horta in the northern suburb Horta-Guinardó - if only I had known this some weeks ago when I was in Barcelona. The orgy was shot at the Poble Espanyol. For these scenes the theatre company La Fura dels Baus had been engaged to help the 800 extras and develop some kind of choreography. The author mentions some more towns like Girona and Figueres, but to my knowledge no scenes with Alan Rickman were filmed there.
According to an article in Fridays’s edition of the newspaper “Die Welt”, the production company Constantin Film organises a film premiere for invited guests in Berlin on 8 September. It's held at the CineStar at the Potsdamer Platz. The article claims that Alan Rickman, Ben Whishaw and Sir Simon Rattle are confirmed to attend, while Dustin Hoffman said he might attend. Onlookers at the red carpet are welcome.
The official world premiere will be held in Munich - either on 7 or 13 September. Unfortunately, the article isn't clear on the date, although I think that 7 September is more probable.

From The Times 18th August
People by Hugo Rifkind in Edinburgh:
Quote:
Spotted dining together last night, at the trendy private Hallion Club in Edinburgh, were Alan Rickman (he of eyebrow-raising, laconic drawling and Harry Potter fame) and Lord Steel of Aikwood (he of being a bit smaller than David Owen but also being called “David” fame).
We were not actually at the table, but we are almost certain that the conversation revolved around the Middle East. Lord Steel is a former president of the Medical Aid for Palestinians group. That evening he had just been to see My Name Is Rachel Corrie, about the death in the occupied territories of an American pro-Palestinian demonstrator, at the Pleasance Theatre. Rickman is the director.

Hello ladies, greetings from Edinburgh! Yes, I am in Edinburgh : ), and I attended both the Snow Cake premiere Tuesday evening and MNiRC last night. As you all know from the tons pics by now, Alan was there for the premiere, and he attended last night's performance of MNiRC as well. I was able to take pics and make some video recordings, which I will post as soon as I get back this weekend (I'm here without my laptop and am dying to upload everything).
Anyway, following the performance of MNiRC last night, Alan was interviewed for about 30 minutes for British TV - so anyone in the UK, PLEASE keep your eyes peeled for the interview (which was conducted in a cordoned off area, but I was able to hang around and observe the whole thing from a distance, and it appeared to be pretty in-depth).
Details to follow once I'm back. ; )

Alan Rickman flutters into Everyman for 'Snow Cake'
Award-winning actor Alan Rickman and director Marc Evans present a charity preview screening of their latest film 'Snow Cake' followed by a Q&A session on 5 September 2006 to raise funds for St Stephen's in Hampstead.
Nominated for the top prize at this year's Berlin Film Festival, Rickman plays the tight-lipped, spiritually lost Englishman Alex Hughes who forges an unexpected bond with an autistic woman, Linda, following his arrival in small-town Canada. He becomes increasingly involved in Linda's life and forms a relationship with her sassy independent neighbour Maggie (Carrie-Anne Moss). When Alex finally gets back on the road he has exorcised his inner demons, and the town he leaves behind has also been transformed.
"It's those small releases of emotion that happen in real life that you notice in a really well-written script," Rickman says, adding "It's going to be an education to people on one level, but it's hugely entertaining and very funny and touching as well."
The screening will raise funds for St Stephen's situated at the junction of Rosslyn Hill and Pond Street, NW3. Built in 1869, St Stephen's is Grade 1 listed with remarkable interior and is the major London work of notable English architect Samuel Teulon who specialised in the Victorian style of Gothic churches. After many years of neglect, a public fundraising scheme is underway to restore the landmark site and once again bring it back to the community for both public and private events.
'Snow Cake' Charity Preview followed by Alan Rickman Q&A takes place on Tuesday 5 September at 8.45pm Tickets £20 with proceeds to St Steven's, Hampstead – to book, please visit http://www.everymancinema.com or call the Box Office on 0870 066 4777.
Hmm how do I get there with my arm in a sling.........
About St Stephen's St. Stephen's Restoration and Preservation Trust has already spent over £1,000,000 on repair and restoration including ground floor windows, foundations and the construction of a new safe structure for the ground floor, retaining the original boards and restoring the wonderful encaustic floor tiles.
The next stage will cost another £3 million to complete the project and open St Stephen's to the community. Awarded a grant of £2,452,000 by the Heritage Lottery fund, the Trust must show match funding of £650,000 in order to receive it. With £560,000 already raised, a final £90,000 is required for completion. Assuming funds are secured, St Stephens will be operational in less than two years, and open to the public for theatre, concerts and recitals, exhibitions, conferences, wedding receptions and private functions, community events and The Learning Centre which will offer opportunities for education and life skills

I fast forwarded through the 6.30 Regioanla Scottish News but no sign of the Film Festival, however I have it set up for the 10.30 news too so maybe their might be some coverage. Probably more chance of it being on the regional ITVchannel than the BBC but I can't get Scottish ITV.

If he can go on the complete DROSS that is Jimmy Kimmel... I'm sure he can lower his standards for Paul O'Grady. And besides; I'm sure Paul would be gentle with him... maybe. Although to his credit - Paul seems to already have quite a rapport going with most of his guests anyway. He's everyone's friend! Pity about his heart attack though :\
Yes. I think that'd be my dream interview. Alan on Paul O'Grady (don't be filty. lol). Might just top the hilarity that was David Cameron on Jonathan Woss.

See... I loved Alan in that movie. He and Bill Nighy stole the entire thing. It's true what they say - Alan steals movies from everyone else and Bill steals movies from Alan (see Blow Dry). It's a pity that Alan doesn't do more promotional work for his movies though - he'd make sitting through Richard & Judy worth it. And imagine it... Alan on The Paul O'Grady Show. Sigh. I think that'd be my ideal show. Paul's humour and just general fuzzy loveliness and Alan's... Alany-ness. Haha. That last part made no sense whatsoever.

My thanks must go out to everyone here that has been keeping this guest book going and updated with the AR latest and greatest. Since my time here is so limited lately, yall have been my AR saving grace! Thanks to all of you!
Since the discussion on the ALA poster has subsided, I won't bring it up again but I did want to thank SnapeFan, Camerata and everyone that worried about and helped the fan that made the bid error. If it had gone through, it would have been awful. This group is the most concerned, giving, and kind bunch of people I've seen in a long time.
Cyntilla, thanks for the Perfume poster! Gee whiz, he's breath-taking!
Many thanks to our Edinburgh "reporter" sue for the links to the reviews of Snow Cake. The reviews are sounding better and better now that its closer to release. I can't wait to see (and own) this film!
EMILY!!! Great news on the radio interview!!!! I can't wait to hear what he has to say! We will definitely get a recording of it just in case someone misses it.
RickiNicki (been missing ya girl!) thanks for the link to the Perfume interview with AR!!!!! Isn't that a great interview? And many thanks to Vera for translating it for us. I was shocked to read that AR had not read the book before shooting the film. I have only one thing to say to AR......SEE The Princess and the Warrior!!!

So here is the translation of the two paragraphs in Ben's and Rachel's interview about Alan.
Quote:
Interview Ben Whishaw
With Alan Rickman, your antagonist Richis, you have something in common; you both attended the same acting school.
That’s right. And I’m fascinated by Alan. We haven’t had many scenes together, but I loved our discussions between the scenes. Alan is very intelligent and has a very wise approach about live. More so he is a fantastic actor, whom you really want to watch just because of the seething beneath his skin.
Quote:
Interview Rachel Hurd-Wood
How was the work with your film father Alan Rickman?
Alan is absolute fantastic. He is really nice and exquisitely funny. He’s a wonderful colleague, understanding, helpful and very, very patient.

Oh! I forgot to thank Vera for her translation of the Parfum interview. I was surprised he hadn't read the book. It sounds from that and from other sites I have read that there is going to be a lot added to the story. Richis had very little to say in the novel.
You really never can please all the people, can you?
Read the Herald's review on Carolyn's link. Then read the Scotsman's.
Some find Sigourney Weaver's touching and brilliant, others find it cloying and emabarassing. I think this is one of those films that the public might like but a lot of critics won't, jut hope that doesn't stop it getting a good release.
Thanks for the Radio 4 information Emily, I am booked in for my carpal tunnel op that morning so I can come home and insist on listening to the radio!!

Here is my effort to contribute something - my attempt at a translation, Emily:
Keeping track of Patrick Süskind's protagonist Grenouille in "Perfume" author Oliver Mittelbach takes you to the scenes of the plot to Paris, across France and the Provence right into the Perfume town Grasse. The list of names of the film version sounds like a "Who is Who" of international film: Stars from Bernd Eichinger to Dustin Hoffman, from Tom Tykwer to Alan Rickman will attract Perfume fans from September 2006 onwards.
Filming took place in Barcelona and numerous pieces of information and anecdotes from the set will make the book exciting for those as well, who only want to travel in their imagination or "under the duvet".
Hope that helps

Hikity, thank you for the heads up on import duty. I have spoken to Revenue & Customs, they will charge 3.5% duty on poster costs and delivery, plus 17.5% VAT on top, this comes out at £14.90, I need to add £1.50 p&p to you, so total would be £16.40. This is still cheaper than the £19+ from the UK distributor.

Oh, Juliet, this is more or less what I paid (I ordered 4 different posters for classroom decoration), but 2 weeks later I received that additional invoice for customs clearance. Everything in the EU that costs more than 20 € has to be presented first to the customs. This means the UPS agent takes the cardboard tube plus millions of other things to the CC, someone glances at it and for this I have to pay 25 €. I love this.

Also, if you don't want to read the book first . . . don't! Of course you would hear about many spoilers in two years but not every detail. It would be hard to avoid all of the discussion . . . but 2 years!!!! I'd die! And some people here know what a can of worms that would open! (I don't think I'd be the only one to die, either)

Hi All,
I was waiting for someone to say something like that. This discussion has gone on, with all sides heard equally, And I for one am glad to move on.
Just had a thought to ponder over. Now I know this may bring out the beast in a lot of you.....but....I was just was thinking today how nice it would be to go to a Harry Potter movie (the last one) without knowing what was going to happen ahead of time. I wonder if for end of the series....they could just .....Now don't yell at me!!!!! Put the book out after the movie. There I said it. As I sat at the theater watching the Goblet of Fire , I couldn't help but think ....good grief they are at the dragon scene already, then the lake scene, and then all too soon it seemed , the maze, grave yard, maze, and end of book. I left the place feeling breathless, like being rushed through what should have been a pleasent afternnoon at the theater. A lot was left out. The trouble is we tend to know exactally who is going to say what and do before it happens.
Now I know this would probably mean that not as many people would buy the book, I would just to see what was left out, but would it really be such a loss to J.K.Rowling? I would just love to sit in the theater, just for the end of it all (makes me sad to even think of it ending) (sniff, sniff) and be totally blown away by the ending. What do you guys think? The last Star Wars Movie was kept a secret and did very well.
I knowwhat you are thinking, it is taking forever for them to catch up now, and I too can't bear to think the last book is not going to come out for two years. But wouldn't it be fun, just a bit, to be surprised?????
Would love some feed back on this.....remember no yelling!! My old computer is acting up and can not fix some of the wording, sorry.

The Nick Hern one is $18.95 and has 64 pages and the other is the Theatre Communications Group one at $9.97 with 96 pages. Both are paperbacks. They are different slightly different dimensions, so that could explain the different number of pages. But why is one half the price of the other, I wonder?

I think you've missed the point I was trying to make in saying that there is a distinction between "fan" and "collector," Marlene. I wasn't ranking them in any way, merely stating that they are two different animals, and while there may be crossover in certain behaviors, they often operate differently.
In my experience with this fandom, the vast majority of AR fans do not participate in the typical collector's behavior I referred to below. The bulk of fans DO tend to have collections of films and various other types of memorabilia (photos, graphic art, books, etc.), and they may even purchase items from Ebay every now and then, but they're not usually purchasing multiples of anything, nor are they selling them, because, they're not "collectors".
Historically, most of AR fandom has balked at that kind of thing, which is why you've gotten the reaction you've gotten. In general, this is a very generous fandom, and Claudia's awesome site is just one of the examples of this. Claudia is sharing materials that she herself has acquired, or that other people have shared with her. For free. In no way does this mean that other fans aren't "allowed" to use Ebay as collectors would do, but, as I say, there is a distinction made by most fans in AR fandom between the Ebayers and the non-Ebayers. I'm not endorsing this distinction; I'm merely pointing it out.
Most fans tend to share every tidbit they find regarding AR, and they look out for other fans' interests. That's really rare in online fandom. It's one of the things that makes this such a great one, though.
Hikity's right--perhaps this conversation should be moved to the Discussion Party site that Claudia has provided for such non news-related topics. I won't be commenting further on this topic on this GB.

I must agree with Marlene Miller about collectors and fans.
Who can decide who really likes him and who just wants to HAVE stuff connected with him?
And may exist any fan who is not trying to have as much pictures or movies with ALAN as is possible?
This is difficult problem and belongs to discussion part.

Just received e-mail notification from Amazon.Com that the book "My Name is Rachel Corrie" has been shipped. I ordered the book in April.
For those who do not know, this is a story edited by Alan Rickman and Katherine Viner from e-mail and diary entries written by Rachel Corrie. Tickets are on sale now for October's New York presentations.
Compiled from writings left behind in the diaries, letters and e-mails of American activist Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old protester who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza, MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIEchronicles the human, social and political evolution in the life and controversial death of a young woman. The play traces the life of Rachel from her early days in Washington State through her experiences as an activist seeking to learn more about the community within Gaza.

In my opinion this is the best Harry Potter / Alan Rickman thus far. Now when "Half-Blood Prince" comes out... I may have to revise that endorsement.

Look forward to Alan Rickman being on the cover of Entertainment Weekly magazine. I don't know how soon, but he will appear. Whenever they publish someone as the "Obsessive Fan of the Week" ... their celebrity of choice often adorns the EW cover several months down the line.
This week's "Obsessive Fan" is Michelle Welch of Madison Heights, Michigan. And her celebrity of choice is Alan Rickman.

I agree.
And I'd wonder if we need to make a distinction of who is a "fan" and who is a "collector". Do we really? If you're "only" a "fan", does that mean you can't be a "collector"? Is one lesser in status than the other? I think not.
I've been an Alan Rickman fan since seeing him in "Romeo & Juliet" and "Barchester Chronicles" and started collecting his "stuff" ever since. And that IS a whole lot of Alan Rickman "stuff".
Are those of us who "collected" a stack of Alan Rickman movies and/or plays and audiobooks any different from those who "collect" CDs full of Alan Rickman pictures and photos? Or how about those of us who "collect" Alan Rickman wallpaper stored on their computer or CDs? Or those who have "collected", every Brit Bit and Clip on this site?
Are you less of a "fan", because you've "collected" Alan Rickman memorabilia? I think not. In fact, I think it's the complete opposite. Are there really any Alan Rickman "fans" among us who only admire him from afar and don't "collect" anything related to him?
Vera said she didn't know the cost of Scotsman's Newspaper to the U.S.A. Katie, who is my contact in Edinburgh says the cost is 15.00 GBP which includes shipping to the 'States. Roughly translated, that's $30.00.

I'm with you on copying items that are freely available, Sue. The sad part about being an AR fan is that there are so many items that either have never been released or are really difficult to obtain, and I have taken part in distributing these kinds of things for years, and don't see myself stopping unless (and this would be great) The Powars That Be see fit to give them general release. ... I will point out that the newspaper Scotsman sells backissued numbers. They are £5.00 for people in the UK and £6.30 for people in Europe. I don't know about the prices for people outside of Europe, but it might be a good idea to contact the Scotsman before you pay a fortune at Ebay.

I think there's a distinction between a general "fan," which is what most people who post here and at other AR fan sites are, and a "collector." Marlene Miller appears to be the latter. Collectors, particularly collectors of fan-type memorabilia, do tend to purchase multiples of whatever it is they are seeking to add to their collections, and they will generally keep one for viewing, reading/handling, and at least one for preservation/display/future trades. While a collector may be a serious fan of whatever he or she is collecting, many times, the collecting itself has become a serious hobby, and it becomes, then, thrilling to see if you can "collect them all," so to speak. If and when their tastes change, the collector will cash in on the former collection to make $$ and space available for their next venture.
I've never been into collecting in this way with regard to AR stuff, but I know many people who are huge fans of other shows, actors, and musicians, and these folks exhibit the same behavior as Marlene Miller. So I have no problem whatsoever believing that she is an AR fan, but I do think her love of collecting in this way is a match for her fandom.
As far as Ebay goes, it's a double-edged sword, isn't it? On one hand, it's been the source of a few of my prized AR possessions. On the other, it's been the source of a great deal of outrage. But, really, if some Ebayer is eager enough to purchase an item from an Ebay seller without first researching to discover if that item can be acquired elsewhere for less, I'm afraid the old addage about a fool and his/her money can be applied. And as for the sellers, well, frankly, as long as they're not selling something illegal or fraudulent (i.e. fake autographs), there's not really anything that can be done.
Whether or not we agree with what Marlene Miller (and others like her) is doing, she did purchase the posters directly from ALA, and is therefore selling something she actually owns. It remains to be seen whether or not she will donate 50% to the ALA, but either way, the profits are hers to dispose of as she likes.
Most of us are fans who tend to share things freely or at cost, which is awesome. Like Sue, I enjoy purchasing multiples and sending them to people who don't have access, or as gifts, etc.
But we also do tend to give away a lot of things that we don't actually own ourselves, in the name of giving/sharing. Sometimes these things can be purchased, and sometimes not, but often if the price is deemed too steep, we will just distribute copies so that other fans can see it.
Is "abusing" AR's generosity as far as doing something like the ALA (or RADA) benefit all that different from abusing copyright law and sharing items for free that could be purchased? Is wanting to protect those things he does for charity and awareness more noble than wanting to protect his vested interest in his life's work? I'm not sure that it is. Speaking as a fan who hasn't been all that noble with regard to copyright law, I'm loathe to make any judgments on one grey area when I'm standing firmly in another one.
Comments: I agree with Sue. That practice prevents people who haven't a lot of money to buy some articles because the choice is smaller and the price always rise, pity. I wanted to buy the "Spectrum" mag but it's too expensive for me and for many of you I suppose too

So do I. And I thank them once again.
>> when you choose something that is meant to help a foundation or a charity and you personally make a "small" profit thats where you get people like me and others mad.
I'm sorry this made you mad, however you should know that the posters are not being purchased by me, at a discount or a cost any less than what they would cost you.
I, too, paid $13 each so the ALA already made their profit when they sold the posters to me. I am not taking anything away from this foundation ... by giving the ALA 50% of the profit I'm making from re-selling, I'm actually adding to ALA's profit.
>> There has been many disscussions here about people swiping fans pictures and selling them as their own and fake Alan autographs.
I know, I've read the discussions here and on other forums. eBay has even posted a disclaimer and warning to those of us who purchase autographs. (And yes, I'm bidding on several.)
J.K. Rowling herself, was one of the celebrities who brought the fakes to eBay's attention. I'm not sure, but eBay still might have her letter(s) available for your perusal.
>> Your auction does not have "official" backing by ALA or Alan Rickman....
As noted previously, I'm working with "T" from the ALA to set up final details.
Until I posted my intentions, there was nothing that says I MUST give the ALA any of the profit I'm making above and beyond the $13 poster cost plus eBay and PayPal fees. That's something I chose to do. That's why I made the donation statement.
No problem... I could easily keep every cent... but I chose to give something back. There are many causes worthy of our support, and to me, ALA is one of them.
>> so excuse some of us for questioning your intentions with the donation.
Quite frankly, you can question my intentions all you want. I have nothing to hide.
>> whether you planned to donate or "profit" from this auction we shall see.
Yes, you shall see. From day one... even before ordering the posters, donating to ALA has been my intention, and that hasn't changed.
If I had any doubts about donating to ALA, I never would have posted in the description that 50% of the proceeds would go to ALA. I'm not so naive to think no one from the ALA (or librarians themselves) would be on eBay. I could very easily keep every cent of the profits, but that's not what I'm going to do.
Believe me or not. That's your prerogative.
And to repeat, yes, the 2nd poster no longer has the donation information ONLY because "T's" asked me to remove it until we can work out the details.... hopefully, once "T" gets back to work Monday ... that issue will be resolved and the next poster will once again have the statement.
Why are you defending yourself behind the 'business' facade all the time. The general opinion is that there's nothing wrong with selling an item to a fellow fan, but you're keen on making a (already HUGE) profit, in my book a 'fan' would not make a profit but passing these items on for a casual price. Your: 'it's so nice to talk to a 'fellow' alan fan' is therefore down the drain. And no, what you're doing might not be legally wrong. But ethically it is.

Marlene, I'm not saying that you can't buy and sell whatever you like, all I'm saying is you are a business not a fan and you might as well admit it. It just grates when you see an item bought by somebody on ebay and when you see it again the same person is bidding yet again.
Personally speaking I don't ever buy more than one thing apart from when I bought a pile of papers with a free dvd in it and then sent them around the world to internet pals who I knew wouldn't be able to obtain them (and no, I didn't charge them a penny, for all that matters.)

Sue: You said by any of us buying more than 1 copy of any Alan Rickman item, that we're "stopping others from getting a reasonable deal". Your money spends as easily as mine. The way to win the bid, is to bid the highest YOU are willing to pay for an item. You also said "a fan only needs one"... Are you sure about that? Don't any of you here on this list, have more than one of a particular item? Or is my buying a minimum of 3 (1 to "play with", 1 display, and 1 to trade/sell) unheard of by you?
Aside from my fascination with Alan Rickman, I also collect baseball cards, Indian arrowheads, Star Trek, and Frank Sinatra memorabilia. Some I've received free (most the arrowheads) and others I've purchased via conventions, flea markets, garage sales and recently, eBay. I can assure you I have more than 1 of many of those items.
Oftentimes I've traded something I have duplicates of, for something I "need". The RADA CD, and When Love Speaks are two such items. I bought 4 of each of them directly from the companies that sell them... and have used them for trading. I also have several copies of the GQ magazine ... all are preserved in acid-free clear plastic bags.
But no, I'm not cornering the market by buying more than 1 copy of anything, and neither is anyone else who wants more than 1. You're free to outbid me (and that's happened quite a bit). It's just a matter of how much you're willing to invest.

By buying several of the same items (eg the Snowcake press book) you are obviously stopping other fans from getting a reasonable deal. A fan only needs one item and doesn't sell them on but if it's a business then so be it.

Hello, I thought I'd address some of the comments made here about my sale of the ALA READ poster(s) on eBay.
SnapeFan (Cathy): Yes, I DO "know damn good and well" that the ALA WILL see a MINIMUM of 50% of the sale. I'm e-mailing with a lady (I'll call her "T") from the ALA to see exactly what process I need to go through to make the donations. She advised me that I need to have a contact at the ALA office, to set up the donations. In my naivety, I thought it would be the simple matter of mailing a check, but from what "T" said.... it's a bit more complicated than that.
Emily: Yes, the second poster I'm offering doesn't have the note about donating 50% to the ALA, because "T" asked me to remove the donations reference until all the details have been set up.
Her exact words are: " . . . if you haven't been able to talk to someone here can you just remove the sell-copy that mentions the sale going to the ALA until it's finalized. It's perfectly fine for you to resell the poster I just don't want people to be confused. Thank you. 'T' "
Camerata, et.al. Skycarter, from France, made a mistake and keyed in $1,650.00 instead of $16.00 as a bid on the poster. She contacted me early this morning and I told her I would cancel the bid for her.... and did immediately. In fact, she and I are e-mailing each other. It's always nice finding fellow Alan Rickman fans who enjoy e-mailing to other fans.
Claudia: You said "Why only 1/2 to ALA?" "Why some and not all?" Because with a small profit, I will have funds to bid on more Alan Rickman items. Check out my buying record on eBay... you'll see I spend an awfully huge amount of money on Alan Rickman items (including over $200 for an autographed working script of "Dogma" with the working title "Bearclaw").
UnderCover AKA SnapeFan: I'm not in "business". I'm an Alan Rickman fan just like all of you are and if I can purchase something then sell it at a profit it gives me extra spending money to buy more. I suppose you can call it a "business" if you want to.
Rose: Thank you. You're correct. It's my right to sell the posters just as it's everyone here's right to post and download pictures and videos of Alan Rickman audiobooks, plays, movies, interviews, etc., even though some (all?) have a copyright.
"T", the ALA contact I'm e-mailing with, commented "we applaud the entrepreneurial spirit" and even expressed hope that the poster brings a high figure because when that happens, the ALA will get a larger share of the profit.
Those of you who are talking about the "Scotland on Sunday" Spectrum magazine with Alan Rickman as the "Sexy Beast" might not know that the paper costs 2.50 Pounds in the UK. Have you seen how high those magazines are selling for on eBay? Definitely a whole lot higher than 2.50 Pounds. But... if we want them, we buy them.
And no, I don't consider those sellers "piggies" ... they're making a profit in the highest entrepreneurial sense of the word. As you'll see if you look at my eBay buying record... I purchased at least 3 of them. Ditto with the "Snowcake" press books which the sellers and/or journalists or photographers got for free at the Berlinale Premiere. If I had a problem with the seller for offering the items at a huge profit... I would have passed them by.
Also, the coveted GQ Alan Rickman cover has sold for close to 100.00 dollars or more, even though it originally cost considerably less. Want it? Buy it. Or pass it by.
Under Cover AKA Snape Fan: As for you contacting the bidders? That's your prerogative. You might be surprised to know that I was contacted by people from this forum to let me know about this discussion. And that's THEIR prerogative.
Thank you for reading my post.

Rose, I respect your opinion. I am not afraid getting banned from Ebay. I can be just like the other scammers and make a new name.I did this because Mr Rickman doesnt do this sort of promotion very often. It could ruin the chances of him donating his time for another cause in the future. This promotion is for the kids out there who need encouragement to read. Which now has become mandantory to pass the states tests and get promoted to the next grade or in some circumstances graduate high school. I bet sellers like "marlenemiller" and the many others out there doing this arent thinking about that, eh? Well I am because my son is one of those kids who has fallen into this category. Alan has been an encouragement for my son during his final stage of his cleft palate repair, he has come through for him aswell as my God Daughter who has Leukiemia. Now Alan has another chance to reach some one elses kid out there. Maybe someones kid here in this forum when their mom opens that tube containing Alan's poster. Mine is hanging in our computer room as we speak and both my sons are the ones who hung it. My apologies for rambling. Claudia you may delete this if you wish.

Comments: Even though it's not fair of that ebayer to try to sell the poster, it is still her right. I dont condone this behavior myself and feel bad when people either don't know they can get the item cheaper someplace else but also, some people just like the so called "bidding wars" and love the challenge of a good auction. Also, if somone contacts the bidders such as under cover alanfan said they did and are a registered ebayer, they could be banned from using ebay in the future. I still admire and think you desrve a round of applause for letting those others know they are getting "ripped" off. I myself last year wanted to try to get the Hallmark ornament Rockin with Santa and the price wars are still raging on over there. The ornament orignally sold at Hallmark for around 20.00 or so (it was a little record player that came with 6 records that played tunes) I was too late to get it and all the sellers jacked up the price and people were paying 100.00 or more last christmas. Needless to say, I never got one, but will find one eventually! I guess thats what freedom is all about, being able to operate under the "freedom" act (although at times a very greedy one as in this case. Will get off my soapbox and look at Alan to feel better...Hope everyone gets their poster from the information everyone has posted here from the ALA.

Emily, do you know by chance how much the final bid was? If you order the poster for Germany (and surely for France, too) you have to pay a considerable sum for UPS and customs clearance - this you have to take into consideration when ordering. But surely not 100 $

About the ALA Ebay scam, I emailed the buyer and she responded back saying she is French and doesnt speak English very well so she is confused on this bid. Anyone out there willing to translate so she doesnt fork out over $100 US dollars for the sellers pocket? You know darn good and well ALA will not see 50% of the sales.

Well, you know me -- I'm skeptical. And even if this seller actually donates 50 percent of the winnings to ALA -- who cares? The bidders are getting scammed! If this person wants to donate money to the ALA, she could have done it with her OWN money!
Spread the word that anyone who wants to buy this poster can do so legitamitely on the ALA site! And if anybody wants to donate money to a good cause, they can write a check to their LOCAL library or literacy group, because at least that way they'll know where their money is going! Be careful on EBay!

That eBay READ poster thing is odd! But it seems real . . . I wonder if she really will give 50% to the ALA??? But, then, I saw someone bid $85 on one of the HP DVDs just before it came out for $20!

Welcome here Barbara !
I played a little with my Photo software this evening. Who wants to see Alan with blue eyes ? LOL (Photo cleaned by CatsPlay on her site) I've just change the contrast and light quickly and colored the eyes

This is unbelievable -- some slimeball is selling the AR "Read" Poster on EBay -- the same one that can be easily purchased from ALA online. What's even more unbelievable is that some people are actually bidding on it and it's up to $61. Yes, $61. For a poster that costs $15. What's wrong with these people?

Should you be interested in any other questions you want me to ask him, pls e-mail me . I hope you still remember my e-mail address??!

Hi All,
This site looks interesting. Can't wait to dive right in. Of course I am a fan of Alan Rickman. Would love to hear the latest stuff going on in his professional life. His private life should be his own. I have a lot of ideas about how the last Harry Potter book should end. Will be interesting to see what will happen. Also have seen many of his other films, but alas some of his films are hard to find around here. Will be looking foward to Snow Cake coming out.
I too feel the his part of Snape, should be a lot bigger, but think he is basically misunderstood. Was shocked when he zapped DD but if we remember that Hagrid over heard them fighting about something . Maybe he(DD) wanted Snape to kill him to put him out of his misery. I feel that DD was going away to treatments for a sickness. He knew that if Draco was allowed to kill him, he would be rewarded and taken into the evil side with glory and doomed to that life forever. DD would not want that for any of his students. I think Snape thinks of DD as a father , his own was pretty rotten to him. It must have bothered him as much to kill him as it was for Harry Potter to watch it happen.

I encourage everyone to see BW. The sound from the film has been on the Audio page for some time but watching the film brings a whole other dimension. Its very eye opening.
Thanks again INTJ!!!!
Hikity!!!! Thank you sooo much for posting the ALA poster so early for all of us. Your hubby is a sweet fellow....and he bought a frame for you too??? Kewl! Oh and I still cry to this day with TMD so I know the feeling. Its been many years and many watches and I still cry! LOL
Peekabooh, you are such a generous person for offering to order for our friends outside the US. I'd be glad to help groups of others if the need arises.
Emily, thanks for the head's up on the Edinburgh photo exhibit! I hope some of our friends that get to go will try to get a pic for us....if AR is in the group, of course.
Lex, the hi-res pics from Snow Cake are amazing! I have to join the crowd on that close-up of AR. *gulp*
sue, the wallpaper from the new pic is fabulous! I'm going to save it to my phone as soon as I get a chance. The black background really does look sleek on my phone. Its like AR is just THERE! *grin*
Carolyn, thanks for the Scotsman blurb. Secret bar, eh??? Celebrities or not that's the kind of bar I really lurvvvvvv!
Jean, I'm so sorry that the precious phrase has such a negative connotation for you. I'm sure that nickitynick used it as a term of endearment towards AR. I use that phrase towards my new grandson quite a lot. I've never read/seen any of the LotR books/films so I didn't realize that it might be offensive to someone.

Camerata, hihi, thanks for those clear pics Snapy far away
I just saw TMD and I was crying so much that I am exhausted now JS and He Who Must Be Adored are wonderful here
Jean, Tolkien's books are much much older than any Hollywood movie (which I haven't seen btw), but nobody has ever applied a negative connotation to "precious" so far. I do not care about any influence movies or the media for that matter want to exert. So just relax and have fun with us we are really nice people here - actually everybody is precious!

No! No! Don't go to the Discussion Party without a VERY healthy sense of humor! I love LOTR, and in that context "my precious" has all of those bad connotations, but I don't think using it here is disrespectful . . . he IS precious! He is also He Who Must be Adored (but not an unnameable evil).

Comments: His "Precious" is what poor, destroyed Gollum calls the evil Ring about a thousand times in Lord of the Rings so the word now carries very bad meaning for lots of people, referring to a sick love for an evil, destructive object. Not appropriate for AR.
The author talks about the Edinburgh Fringe launch party and made a comment:
"There was a rumour that Alan Rickman was hanging around, but I didn't manage to see many celebrities, maybe they stayed away or they had a secret bar somewhere else."

sue, you must be joking: Alan as KEITH (what does Keef mean??) - arrrgh, I mean, when Keith shouted out during a concert last time whether someone would like to marry him I cried, yes me - to shock my brother and my friends a bit, , but I cannot find any similarities between the two and I do not want Alan to lose weight anyhow. He looks perfectly o.k. to me. Keith can play his part on his own...and Mick too, for that matter.

He was listed to be in Manchester Utd Ruined My Life about 3 years ago. Jason Isaacs was set to be in it too but jason emailed one of his fansites some time later and told them it had been shelved due to lack of cash. But I've never read this book, although I know it.
To the mystery woman with Alan: I know it's not Sheila and I though it just because I've seen her before, but I just can't remember where or when. But I know her face!!!
Is she anything else than Alan's representative?
ALA central in Chicago? No,no,no!!!I was there so many days and I'm still so close, but I can't go there again!!! And I don't have enough money!!!! Nooooo!
I spent my last money for Alan's DVD-I think it's a good excuse.
If somebody will have a date of order of the posters for Europe, please let me know. Maybe I'd like to join.
Oh and, I don' know if it was mentioned before but to M.Night Shyamalan was offered to direct 7th Harry Potter.
Marc Evans made a splash in 2002 with My Little Eye, and is back with Snow Cake, in which Sigourney Weaver does a grand turn as an autistic woman who has to cope with the double trauma of losing her daughter and having Alan Rickman as a house guest. The latter event proves more traumatic
I could take the second trauma!!

There's a good interview with Sigourney Weaver in the August 6 issue of the Sunday Herald regarding "Snow Cake".
One of the things she says about Alan: "In this film, Alan respected what I was trying to do, and we always tried to be there for each other. The scenes were complex and go all over the place, but it was an amazing ensemble experience to have that trust. I felt that we were like trapeze artists and everytime I was in the air, he caught me."

Not as simple as I thought. I spoke to Demco (the UK distributors), the poster is £12.50 +VAT (@17.5%) + postage of £4.35. Bulk discount is only on orders of £800+. I would want the whole print run for that money!
I have emailed the ALA asking of 20% off 5+ items stands for overseas orders and details of postage for single, 5 and 10 posters.

There is an interview with Sir Sean Connery - thud - unfortunately sold out, however, there are always chances...good luck to all who go up to Scotland!!
Tickets for three Festival events have sold out already.
The Festival box office has only been open since noon, but we've sold out of tickets for the BAFTA Interview with Sir Sean Connery, the UK Premiere of Clerks 2, and the Reel Life event with its director, Kevin Smith. If you wanted a ticket for any of these and missed out, don't despair just yet. During the Festival the returns queue will open half an hour before each event, and you might get lucky

For your information:
latest news from scotsman, no news of the OooA though:
But on a happier note, Sigourney Weaver has now confirmed her personal appearance in the Reel Lives strand, although as yet no firm date has been scheduled. Weaver, who shot to almost instant stardom on the back of Alan Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 Alien and has since played a wide variety of Hollywood roles from Gorillas in the Mist to Ghostbusters, co-stars in the Gala UK premiere of Snow Cake, a British/Canadian feature that opened this year's Berlin Film Festival. Snow Cake - reportedly featuring one of Sigourney Weaver's "finest performances to date", shows at the Cameo (17 Aug) and in Morningside's Dominion cinema (15 Aug), a very welcome new venue for the 60th Film Festival.
Meanwhile, in latest news, the irrepressibly popular Clerks II, whose director Kevin Smith is also appearing in this year's Reel Lives strand, is receiving an additional, third screening on 18 August. But needless to say, by time of writing this screening had also sold out.
Tickets for the Sigourney Weaver Reel Lives event go on sale at midday on 1 August - don't expect them to hang around. The entire EIFF programme can be browsed and tickets booked online on their dedicated pages.
The Edinburgh International Film Festival takes place from 14 - 27 August.

If anyone is going to Edinburgh, they might want to check out this exhibit:
RARELY seen pictures of Hollywood celebrities appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as unknowns have gone on display in the Capital.
Alan Cumming, Alan Rickman, Jude Law, Derek Jacobi and Rachel Weisz all feature in the exhibition, which is being staged to mark 60 years of the world's biggest arts festival.
It is being hosted by the Princes Mall shopping centre from today until the end of the Fringe, all the pictures coming from the archives of Scotsman Publications, publishers of the Evening News.
Other well-known faces pictured before they were famous include television presenter Angus Deaton, folk singer Ewan McColl, Private Eye editor Ian Hislop, and Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders.
Among the other stars to feature in the exhibition are veteran Scots actors Russell Hunter, Andy Gray and Elaine C Smith, Billy Connolly, Christian Slater, Morrissey and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos.

Jéssika, yes, you can find those posters which "advertise" for reading in general (and I suppose mainly for kids and adolescents ) with many other "celebrities" on the ALA store. My daughter advised us which posters would be suitable for classroom decoration and -alas- we have got 4 more. Although not being a fan myself, Keira looks stunningly beautiful - like the "real Elizabeth".
Emily, old sceptic . I mean, hubby is wonderful and he is surely a gifted handyman, electrician, cook and - in passing - the best engineer I've ever met and the best of all husbands, but he is not an artist and for him computers are restricted to writing letters, e-mails and looking up important things on the internet...
AND NO - HE IS NOT FOR SALE

I have to applaud AR for making the poster--anything to get people reading is wonderful. I have to say J. D. Salinger has never been a favorite of mine, they are thought provoking--read all the ones you all have mentioned for school and wasn't impressed. I had more of an affinity to John Stienbeck, depressing as he was. He looks tired, he is special to add this promotion to his already busy schedule--especially for American libraries. Bravo, AR!!!!
P.S.--Is it my imagination or does the striped coat get a lot of mileage!

Rowling has said two characters will die in the seventh and final Harry Potter book, but she has been careful not to reveal which ones.
She told the Richard and Judy show that she had long known how the series would end, because she had written the last chapter "in something like 1990".
"One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said.
She refused to elaborate, as "I don't want the hate mail or anything else".
Rowling said she could understand why authors might want to finish off their main characters in order to ensure they could never be resurrected.
She would not say if this would be the case with Harry.
However, she admitted she had "never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books".
'Arrogant'
This approach had meant she had been "lambasted" by several people, she said.
"I think they thought it was very arrogant of me to write the end of my seven books series when I didn't have a publisher and no-one had heard of me."
The author also told the Channel 4 programme she didn't expect to create a character more successful than the teenage wizard.
"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."
On Sunday, Rowling attended the Queen's 80th birthday party at Buckingham Palace, and said she was "doing well" with the final book.
Yeah, I would really like to know where this poster is available too!!

There are really so many books it could be! I could definitely go with "Catcher in the Rye". Another one that I thought of is "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury. I don't know if it's on any particular list, but it really is a compelling novel about book censorship.
A thought just occurred to me about Alan going back to the stage....I would love to see him in a remake of Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"! He would do that play bloody brilliantly!

I haven't posted here in ages, yet I lurk.
Emily is right, that is not Sheila. This mystery lady was at one of the premieres for RHPOT. I'm sorry, I don't have the picture, but I'll see if I can locate it. He was photographed with two different ladies when this movie came out. One was the very sexy woman in a white dress, and I believe she went with him to one of the Emmy parties for STLM. The woman at the Tony awards was also photographed with him when RHPOT came out.
Back to lurkdom, unless I'm successful in finding that picture.

Vera, thank you for the info on the Perfume book. Since its in German, I may not order it unless of course there are some pics of AR. *grin*
I have to agree with Emily on the picture of AR and the mystery woman. She is definitely not Sheila. This mystery woman joins one or two others that he's been photographed with in years past.
