GolfWizard, I agree with you 110%.  I wrote much the same thing (albeit a heck of a lot longer ) on my LJ.  I've really been amazed at the name-calling and finger-pointing I've seen on some of the AR communities after this news was announced.  It's ironic, to say the least.

Hmmmm....    I was looking into the Official London Theatre Guide and I saw that the Playhouse Theatre is slated to show The Creeper from February until the middle of April.  Do they have a couple of theatres, like 'upstairs' and 'downstairs', or, they plan to cut short The Creeper and put on MNiRC?  Or, may be the London Guide hasn't caught up with all the news.

A note to Dumpy Doris - I wasn't faulting you for using zippy-mouth with the 'freedom of speech' thing. Your point is well-made. I just hate to see it be that way.

Did anyone else notice that in one of the Berlinale videos - I can't remember which, the announcer refers to 'Dr. Snape?' I thought that was funny. Logical enough, if you're not familiar with the stories, but funny.

I also love, 'I et a crackah. . .'  I love that whole scene. He's so adorable!

Not to contradict AR, but I don't think this is purely a censorship issue - the play has not been censored, it is not banned, it is simply not going to be done right now by one small, fearful, NY theater group. It is also not a self-censorship issue unless those who supported its creation decide to withdraw it or weaken it from fear or frustration. That has not happened.

I believe in free speech and absolutely do not care for bullying tactics or threats of violence. It gets my back up. However, I do think it's always wise, not just to pick ones battles carefully but, once we decide to fight, to consider the most effective method of surviving said battle. Much as we would like to think that art can be kept separate from politics, in this case, because of the subject matter and current events, to ignore the possible reactions of those with an axe to grind would be foolhardy. I'm not suggesting surrender ... but a strategic retreat can very often lead to victory.

The NY group backing out is a minor setback. This play will continue (it's already booked for a new and bigger run in London). This play will also be performed in North America eventually. I have no doubt. The important thing is to fight the battle wisely: to avoid volatile rhetoric and name calling which really can't do any good. Let the play speak for itself. Let it's growing audience have the final word.

Forgettable??!! I don't think anyone around here finds him forgettable! If he had stayed in Hollywood blockbusters, he would get more attention, but wouldn't be half as interesting.

I like his quote:

Quote:
I'm a quite serious actor who doesn't mind being ridiculously comic

That's one of the things I love most about him! That dance!

On a more serious note: just seeing  together with the term 'freedom of speech' physically hurts! But, I haven't posted on the subject of the MNiRC 'cancellation' yet because it made me so angry and I tend to get on my soapbox when it comes to such biases. As Elaine said:

Quote:
Would they poll Arab/German groups if they were putting on a play about the Holocaust or the making of Israel?

No - nor would they poll Native Americans about a movie about Custer, and on and on.

As far as freedom of speech is concerned - remember the Dixie Chicks controversy? You say what you think these days and you're not a patriot. 'Censorship born out of fear,' indeed.

Elaine, I must get new glasses I thought "What annoying singing person!?" What day and channel is it on?

This MNiRC situation is very strange. Is it normal for a theatre to ask the neighbourhood whether they are going to be annoyed about a production? I can't believe that  happpens in London, and we are every bit as racially/ethnically diverse as NY. Personally I don't see that the theatre size has much to do with it. The original production at The Royal Court was in a tiny theatre too.

Very sad about MNiRC but I somehow had a feeling this would be the case. It's a small theatre. Perhaps if something bigger were to have taken it on, it might have been different. I take exception to them having polled Jewish agencies in the area however. I thought the US was more comopolitan than that.  THere are teo sides to this conflict. Would they poll Arab/German groups if they were putting on a play about the Holocaust or the making of Israel?

AFNH, hi again and glad that there are more fellow Denis Lawson fans amongst us! (I've managed to convert Claudia, too!) Have you seen "Sensitive Skin"?

And I found the repeat of Antiques Roadshow, showing next week but with the very annoying "signing person". But wil make a clip if I can.

Emily, thank you for finding an official word about MNiRC from The Guardian and The Nation.

At least CatsPlay's article says that Mr. Nicola still has hopes of bringing it to the theatre's 2006-7 season.

Thanks for all the opinions on the news.  I don't seem to have anything esle to add except that I have to agree with AR.  We are all losing out on this unfortunate decision.

One other thing that might be considered is that The New York Theatre Workshop certainly isn't the only theatre in New York OR the country.  I wonder if AR has considered taking the play to Rachel's home town of Olympia, WA?

I agree with all of the comments about courage, etc.

    But....

I know this will be the unpopular decision, but honestly, this was a very, very small theater.  There was obviously some risk associated with it.  They had to go through a process of assessing the risk versus the rewards, and they made a financial decision.

I, just as much as everyone here, desperately wanted to see this play come to the US, and empathize and echo AR and Viner's frustrations.  But I also empathize with NYTW.  Who knows what other things we don't know about - threats, etc.

It's ironic. Cancelling this play is a direct contrast to how RC lived and died. More than lack of courage on the part of the theater (which is evident), I feel it's a sad comment of the current situation in the States. No one should have to be afraid of  political backlash because of a play that portrays the thoughts and actions of a young girl (no matter what they are). You may like or dislike the content, you may agree or disagree with her views and actions, you may think the play should be staged or not and you should be allowed to express any and all of these opinions. BUT fear of political backlash from a play should not be an issue. It shows a lack of tolerance for differing points of view and is a direct blow to freedom of expression. I believe that if certain people were more open to plays (and other forms of art and culture) of this nature (from all ends of the political/social spectrum) the 'current political climate' might not be what it is.
Here's to tolerance and freedom of expression.

Imagine if they had polled in certain circles before making Brokeback Mountain!

However, I have complete confidence that someone will pick up this play and it will be loved and hated by American audiences.

    I'm enjoying reading your comments.

Keep in mind that censorship does not only occur with governments. This is a prime example of self-censorship. The theater censored itself when it chose not to show the play because it feared a backlash. Similarly, newspapers censored themselves after 9/11 and many newspapers do not print copies of the Mohammad cartoons because they offend, despite the fact that their very image is newsworthy.

Alma--I think Vicki is absolutely right--I think it is a matter of spinelessness on the part of the NY theatre rather than censorship.

I take great exception to people who will label something without having seen it.  Honest criticism is legitimate, but supposition is ignorance and arrogance.  I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the actual play, but I did read the screen play through our inter- library loan at the university.  It is a powerful expose of a girl---NOT a political movement.  Her writing was extraordinary, wise beyond her years and childish at the same time.  Very much akin to Anne Frank.

I am sorry for AR and Katherine Viner, et al, because they did an exquisite job of editing Rachels writing.  You truly get a sense of who SHE was and what was motivating her--she wanted to make a difference in her world.

Perhaps the controversy will bring a more courageous theatre group in line and it will end up for the better.  We can hope.

The theatre management were just plain cowards.

    Alma

    Comments:
Yeah, I kinda saw this coming.... It was strange that a play like this would not get any publicity, not even a mention on the theater's website in such a short time before its American debut. I wonder how that plea for funds from the public fits into this whole thing. AR and co. must have had a hard time with this.
Wow, this makes me furious. I really hate it when freedom of speech is impeded. First we had all those rabid people going into a frenzy over cartoons of Mohammad and now this. Art and freedom of expression are the things that suffer. Just because a theater hosts a play does not mean that they agree with its views, just as a museum that hosts art does not agree with the artist's statements, just as editorial cartoons do not express a newspaper's views. Of course, by this I mean real newspapers aiming to be impartial,etc- not your tabloids or "theme" newspapers and museums.
I can understand the theater's point of view. They don't want controversy and its true that it would definitley attract its share of people who are angered by the politics without even seeing the play. But it reeks of cowardice. In Israel, the musical the Producers, which features a song called "Springtime for Hitler" with dancing Nazis, opened and has been very successful. I'd be interested in which Jewish leaders the theater actually polled. Artistic freedom is something that New Yorkers hold very dear.
I'm really impressed with the amount of media attention this is getting so far. I agree with you, Vicki. It would be wonderful if another theater seized the chance to show this. I think AR's comments so far have been really good. If they play their cards right, I'm sure that MNIRC will be able to come to America somehow. Especially with the recent election victory of Hamas, I think it is important that Americans try to understand the Palestinian psyche.

Heck, I think Americans need to do alot of things, like step outside their little bubble and acknowledge the troubles that not only the world is facing but ourselves as well. But that will never happen if censorship continues.

Blah, I'm feeling angry and fuzzy. Being awake at 2 am does that to me

I don't think "freedom of speech" is the issue.  It's courage.  The guts to take a chance on something no matter how loud and ugly and vitriolic the opposition may be screaming, nor what they are threatening...be it violence, boycotts or financial retribution, or whatever.

I know we are disappointed, but I think we are jumping the gun a bit by labeling it a censorship issue.  This was probably a small theater that was not willing to take the chance of alienating a local community and perhaps didn't feel it could afford both financially and public relations-wise to take such a risk.  I am confident that there will be a theater out there that does have the intestinal fortitude and financial resources to put on this play.  It'll happen....the publicity alone that this incident will generate will almost guarantee it.

That is a shame about MNiRC.  It doesn't sound as if they used very sound polling practices.  They polled the Jewish community, yes, but what about the rest of the community?

.....yesterday, James C. Nicola, the artistic director of the workshop, said he had decided to postpone the show after polling local Jewish religious and community leaders as to their feelings about the work.

"The uniform answer we got was that the fantasy that we could present the work of this writer simply as a work of art without appearing to take a position was just that, a fantasy," he said.

It's also a fantasy that these people could form an informed and intelligent response without ever having seen the piece.  Well, it's their theater and they have a right to do with it as they please.

I'm hoping that a more open-minded theater will have the courage to take a chance on this play.  I've not seen the play either, but from the reports of those who have, it is not a piece that takes a position but rather tells the story of one particular girl in one particular situation.  Those who have seen it, please correct me if I am wrong...or do you believe that it does take a position?  It's been a while since I've read your reports so let me know if I'm mistaken.

A few days ago, Sue posted a link to an article that labeled AR as a "Jew who hates Israel" along with other prominent names.  I also received a google alert with a link to the same article that had the quote about AR in it.  Since I've been so busy and only get on the GB every 2 or 3 days, by the time I clicked on the link to read the entire article, Alan Rickman's name was removed from the piece on the website.  Interesting.....I wonder if there were complaints or perhaps legal action threatened due to the inaccuracies and inflammatory rhetoric in the article.

But none of this kind of stuff is new.  We saw it before The Passion of the Christ was released and the Catholics had their turn before Dogma hit the theaters and there have been other works that made different groups uncomfortable.  But eventually all of them were release to the public and the anticipated controversy fizzled.  Eventually, I'm sure, the same will happen with MNiRC.  We will just have to be patient.

Speaking of patience.....I know I can't wait either....but hate to break the news, ladies, but GoF won't be released until next Tuesday, March 7th.  Not tomorrow. One more week before our Snape fix.

How incredibly frustrating! Everyone on the London side sound absolutely furious, don't they? I think the NYTW must have given them assurances because AR has commented publicly about the transter. No wonder he is so angry. It is very sad that in *the land of the free* freedom of expression is only allowed if pwerful groups allow it. Sorry if this causes offence but i'm angry too.

    Rickman's statement in the Guardian.

"Censorship"?  I don't think so. I think it's cowardice on the part of a privately funded, cash-strapped theater group that didn't want to alienate its benefactors. But not quite censorship.

Seems like a concerted effort by the Rickman/Viner camp to put NYTW on the hot seat and either force a reversal of their decision or blow it up into a big media deal that will bring in a different theater group to the rescue.

Play About Demonstrator's Death Is Delayed

    Published: February 28, 2006

A potential Off Broadway production of "My Name Is Rachel Corrie," an acclaimed solo show about an American demonstrator killed by an Israeli bulldozer while trying to stop the destruction of a Palestinian home, has been postponed because of concerns about the show's political content.

The production, a hit at the Royal Court Theater in London last year, had been tentatively scheduled to start performances at the New York Theater Workshop in the East Village on March 22. But yesterday, James C.

In particular, the recent electoral upset by Hamas, the militant Palestinian group, and the sickness of Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister, had made "this community very defensive and very edgy," Mr. Nicola said, "and that seemed reasonable to me."

The play, which received strong reviews in London, follows the story of Rachel Corrie, an idealistic American demonstrator and Palestinian-rights activist who was crushed to death in March 2003 in the Gaza Strip.

The play was written by the actor Alan Rickman, who directed the piece, and Katherine Viner, a journalist at The Guardian newspaper in London, who pieced together snippets of Ms. Corrie's journals and e-mail messages to create the script. And while the show had not been formally announced, Ms. Viner said yesterday that she and Mr. Rickman had already bought plane tickets to see the production at the workshop.

"I was devastated and really surprised," Ms. Viner said in a telephone interview from London. "And in my view, I think they're misjudging the New York audience. It's a piece of art, not a piece of agitprop."

But Mr. Nicola said he was less worried about those who saw the show than those who simply heard about it.

"I don't think we were worried about the audience," he said. "I think we were more worried that those who had never encountered her writing, never encountered the piece, would be using this as an opportunity to position their arguments."

Mr. Nicola said that he still hoped to produce the play during the 2006-7 season but that he hadn't heard back from the Royal Court yet. A call for comment to the Royal Court's general manager, Diane Borger, was not returned.

"It seemed as though if we proceeded, we would be taking a stand we didn't want to take," he said.

Oohh, thank you for the good wishes, everyone!!! I had a great day and ended up getting a copy of Bleak House, which I can now enjoy at my leisure (and digest in full Denis Lawson's wonderful performance in it!.........).

As to the S&S question (must get that internet connection up and running again!). Last night, at the beginning of the Antiques Roadshow, there was the usual potted history of the venue they were to be using for the day. I now have the name of the venue - Montacute Hall in Somerset, and it was mentioned that it was used in the filming of S&S. What they basically showed was some footage of S&S being shot there, you could tell it was off-screen action, and ET had the blue dress on. AR was dressed in his black jacket and looked jaw dropping! If anyone was recording anything in the UK on BBC1 last night around 7pm, check your videos! Sometimes Antiques Roadshow is repeated in the early hours of the morning, so there may be the chance of getting it from there....

Why not try searching "Alan Rickman" then advance search "new pictures" and maybe you'll find something new, different, etc.

I just got a google alert on GOF passing the 600 million dollar amount.  You are all going to think me crass to ask this but what kind of salaries do the actors get in a movie that makes that much money.  Do they get a fixed amount and percent of the gross?  Does JKR get a % as well?  That is a heck of a lot of money.  The other HP movies made over 600 million as well.

Since my english is not so good, i want to confirm if u are talking about a new FILM of AR? "The Villa Golitsyn"

And can anyone tell me where i can find some more information about his early life as a stage actor or his early works?
i am really really very interested in such things~~~

The last thing is that i have done a new video. the content is about HIS 2 tangos, i use some photos and of course a clip of the INDEMAND video (in fact i only have those stuffs). for music, indemand is too mild for me, so Refuse to Dance be my choice. i've no idea why my windows movie maker wouldn't let me add a conventional ending to it, so now it ends with a sudden stop...sigh. therefore, i just put it onto YOUTUBE so people who may have a interest can watch without the trouble to download.

Happy birthday Sniv!  I hope you are able to pop in to see your messages!  Have an AR kind of day!

Dee, thank you for your site update.  Its positively eye popping!  *grin*

Nicole, I do like Pale 3.  Twyker is a very talented person.

Camerata, thanks for the new video upload.  I'll post it above as soon as I can.

Thanks for the short piece in honor of AR's birthday, Chalebh.  At least they got a good portion of it right.  I was quite surprised to hear his name mentioned on television and radio here in my area.

Kate, we have several librarians in this group so I am sure they feel your pain!  LOL

Meeressternchen, thanks for the phone information.  I'm looking for a phone upgrade so that will help.

I'm of the notion that the caricature was done of AR from an angle and not an artist error.  The shadowing kind of gives that away, IMO.  I keep going back to look at it and I think I like it more each time I see it.  Although I do have a little problem with what he did with AR's throat.

Thank you for the reviews, they are appreciated! But I guess you got to see the picture in person especially because of this 3-D effect, which make sit interesting...  I have to agree that the two parts of his face are unequal, however, I do not know to what extent it may be a mistake of the painter. It may very well be that it is an effect of the sideview of AR's profile (it is def. a sideview) in mixture with the caricature element, so it may appear wrongly proportioned...

Claudia, it is a Nokia phone, one of the newer models, but dunno which one exactly. I adore Nokia above all other mobile makers... BTW re: the legacy of taking pictures - I suppose cameras are generally not allowed (although I did not see a sign prohibiting it), but mobile phone cameras may be not so distructive as they don't have flashes usually... On the other hand, the mobiles should be switched off due to the noise.

Daydreamer, I have downloaded your clip, but all players on my computer insist that either an undetected error has occured, or the files has a wrong format... Could you perhaps upload it again or would somebody mind sending it to me as an attachment?

Should he feel honoured or … well … ?

It’s nice that in one of my local newspapers they dedicated Alan Rickman a short article for his birthday, but does that mean to publish a bad researched article?

    Here’s what they printed.

On 21th of February 1946 the British actor Alan Rickman was born in London.

He just presented his newest film “Snow Cake” (with Sigourney Weaver) at the Berlinale. As a child he participated in school performances. During his study of design he acted in amateur productions. With a scholarship he was able to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He was a member of the Shakespeare Company for two years, played in the stage version of “Dangerous Liasions” and became well know to the TV audience as a sleazy politician in “The Barchester Chronicles”. Today he is one of the most sought-after actors of his country (“Harry Potter”. He lives with his partner, editor and politician, Rima Horton in Oxford.

Dee: Your art is absolutely brilliant.

thank you all for your kind words about my video! I'm very happy you liked it

darkzorro93: sure you may keep the video on your computer. I'll also try to put it later on more permanent link so it'll stay on my lj as the rest of my videos, so it can be downloaded anytime.
Pitty, I have to wait till weekend to see your video (I have dsl data restricted internet connection)

Linda: I use Vegas movie studio 4. And how I get such good quality - don't know - I use DivX 4 codecs or lately also mpeg4 codecs to make DVD's to avi files and that's all. Some are worser quality - those movies are taped from TV. If you have any other questions, you can email me

Veronika: jej, ahoj! prvý Slovák, ktorého tu okrem seba stretám

Same thing! Please, don't throw anything to me, but I must say that: he looks like Billy Nighy in this portrait!
Don't get me wrong, I love our dear Billy, but... I think I'll spend some time with my trusty PhotoShop trying to do something useful...

    Meeressternchen -

Okee dokee - here's what I discovered looking at the portrait:

    His right                                    His left

Doesn't his right side look much older than his left side? The bag under his eye is much bigger and his jowl droops mugh more. You might have to look at them bigger to actually see it.
