Mmmmm. Jeremy Irons and our AR eh? That should be a treat. I watched JI with Annette Bening on a DVD last week - Being Julia. He definitely is more dissolute or raddled ( are those the words Sue!) looking than Alan. I can see him as Willy but not Simon in the Villa Golytsin.

Ahhhh yes Alfan...you probably already know about Ali-Pat's fantastic site but there may be some new people here that might not know that they can find just about any reference they need about AR in print, films, plays, etc at The AR Fan’s Lifetime Reading Plan plus other neat little AR tracking!

I just completed the Jan archive (to be published later this evening) but I wanted to comment on something I read about Getty cracking down on posting images from their site.  Thank you sue for posting the concern.  I've been so far away lately, I would have missed it.  Anyway, I don't think we have to be to concerned about it though.  If Getty and other sites are cracking down, they will issue a warning first which of course we would abide by.  But I can't see them throwing out fines from no where.  So please don't brake on the images....please???

Lurking--thank you for that!  Glad to finally have a confirmation of the cast.  I do think the casting of Annette Bening is interesting, however.  I will not reveal a major spoiler here, but there will have to be some dialect coaching to pull this off.

Alfan--yes, AR's characters die a lot.  I have been keeping track (WARNING--BIG SPOILERS) here

Interestingly, that, from the earliest to the latest, Alan has always been Willy. IF, as the latest reports show, JI & AB are attached to the project, it should be one hell of a movie!

Oops, i stand corrected. A rather humbling experience if you dont mind me saying. Anyways, i still think that from a physical aspecet that Jeremy would be a better Willy but I know Alan will portray Willy  ( if indeed its true ) emotionlally to the best of his ability wich usually means a stellar performance for us. But do you realize something

Villa Spoiler Serious Spoiler.

If you have not read the book and do not want to know how it ends , then do not read, if you have read the book and know what happens then you will probably agree with me......

Gahds!!! It seems to me that there is going to be a familiar much hated ending agian to one Willy. One that takes the same route as Hans, Elliot, George, Gregory, PL, Gregori, Judge Turpin and probably Snape. Is it just me or does he die way to many times in his movies.........

I agree with both Hikity AND Peekabooh on both accounts.

On the first account, Hikity is VERY right in that these Internet voting things are a huge scam.  So much cheating, its hard to get excited about voting in them any longer.

On the second account, I wasn't able to give as much as I would have liked to on the RADA donation around AR's b'day but the site is good for a year so I plan to go back and donate some more as funds become available.

Ali-Pat, I'm with you on seeing this film.  The book was a real page turner.  If AR plays Willy OR Simon, it will make it that much more fun to see.

My memory sucks BIG TIME but didn't someone approach AR with a question about this film and he didn't know anything about it?

Well said, Peekabooh!

And I had forgotten about Willy and Simon going to the same school, so their ages would not be that far off.  I also have trouble seeing both of them in the same film, but it would be marvelous to witness.  Can't get the idea of a Gruber family reunion out of my mind, though.

All I know is, I am very, very anxious to see this film.  Have been ever since I finished the novel.

Well, after being told that Alan would be in a movie with Johnny Depp and Ali G, nothing amazes me anymore.
And I´m with you Claudia, I can´t picture Annette Bening as Prissy yet.

Hikity, well said about the voting thing. I´m through with it too. Besides that, I think we better show our adoration for Alan in giving a donation to Rada, instead of voting him to a number one position in a * poll. That´s all I want to say about it.

Hmmm.  Well there is some hope, then.  I never thought for a minute Jeremy Irons might be cast as Simon--just as Willy.  I always pictured Simon being much, much younger than Willy for some reason.  Actually, JI has already played a Simon--Hans Gruber's big brother in Die Hard with a Vengeance

I saw both sites referenced by both Ali-Pat and sue (thank you girls!) and was confused as well.  IMDb still says that AR is "attached" as Willy.

But if I remember the story correctly, Willy, Simon, and the third friend were close in age...I believe Willy was a slight bit older than the other two so Jeremy Irons would be a good fit for Simon.

Although Annette Benning is a good actress, I still think Kristen Scott-Thomas would be the perfect Prissy though.

I agree that Jeremy Irons should be great in the role. He's that bit more umm what's the word?? Senior moment, can't think of the word, not exactly raddled but along those lines (that's not being nasty, I love JI!!)

Mind you I thought he'd done the Lolita thing already.

So after Sweeney Todd, no new roles for Alan that we know of (saving the ubiquitous Snape and that's more or less a cameo!) or that Acts of Charity if anything ever comes of that. Oh well maybe it will leave the path clear for a return to the theatre (living in hopes!!)

I'm with you Hikity on the singing thing. I have never got my head around people bursting into song LOL (With the exception of Fred 'n' Ginge)

Hmm, Jeremy Irons eh. Well if you dont mind me saying that i think its a good move. I had  a real hard time imagining Alan in that role as Willy, and not just physically. Not that i dont want to see him do another movie or project but i just didnt see him in this role, now not saying he couldnt of pulled it off as he is a brilliant character and could bring out the tortured soul of Willy like no one else. But alas, i think Jeremy will do wonderful in the role.

Just read this:

Hello all,

Every year for the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers' Choice Awards, we adopt an arts-related charity. This year, our chosen charity has been Sponsored Arts for Education (SAFE), a UK-based charity (founded by Alan Rickman and Ian Holm amongst others) that uses theatre as a means of AIDS education in Africa. Today, SAFE chief executive Nick Reding - who spoke so movingly at our awards launch in December - reports back on how money raised at the event has helped to save lives. We hope you'll be pleased to know that the actors, directors, designers and shows you voted for weren't the only winners this year. You can read Nick's report in Whatsonstage.com News or visit the SAFE website to find out more about how you can donate and/or take part in their important work.

Happy Monday Morning YUKS to everyone!  Unless its an AR kind of day......I soooo hate Mondays!

I've read the current topic and my "two bits" are long over due.  Sorry for being so late once again.

I have to say first that I am thrilled that Susan has taken a dream and seen it through by writing her book.  I know I don't have the patience it would take much less the creativity to write it.  So to Susan and her initiative.

I don't know anything about the publishing industry and can only listen to people that have been in the business for years so I can't comment on whether or not the book is published by a reputable company or not.  But I can say that I fully intend on reading it as soon as I can.

Puddingdale, please don't feel bad about offering your thoughts and comments about the book.  I think you did a perfect job of stating your thoughts in a positive and friendly manner.  After all, any one that puts work out there whether its a book, a film, or a hamburger must be in the position of being able to take constructive criticism as well as praise.

I do have to agree with our lovely Jane Austin friends AND Mary Richard's best friend  that the book might be a better discussion for next door.  After all, Susan reported to us (thanks so much, Susan) that she gave AR a copy and that he requested it in screenplay form...that is really all that is AR related, IMHO.  If I'm wrong, someone please point it out to me.

"Just me", please stay with us.  We have so much to offer as a group of AR friends.  Stick around, you'll see.

I do have to comment on how shocked I am that there has been no other art offerings from the newest AR pictures than Wallpaper Phantom's wallpaper! Where are all of our artists???  I miss your works!

I have a lot of housekeeping around here and the DP board to do.  Archives as well as taking some of the announcements down.  Busy busy busy!

To everyone I owe email to...I'll be getting to my inbox shortly.

This is a subject that should most definitely be taken to the other page. Claudia didn't put all the time and effort into create this site for people to abuse the original mandate of the community. I admit that I have not read Susan's book. However, that being said, any discussion (pro or con) of the book, screenplay, or Susan, should NOT be on this page. Regardless of personal views on any of the above, it should be discussed in the discussion board or with Susan herself via email...and, no, I am not speaking for Claudia. I do not have the authority to do so; but I thought we (the AR fans on this board) were above such pettiness.

Above all, though, I'm concerned that some people may be purchasing copies of Thornton Manor with the belief that AR has consented or will consent to involvement in a film version.  This is going to sound snarky, I know, but it's the best way I can think of to express how incredibly unlikely I believe this to be:  You'll see AR as President of the Margaret Thatcher Appreciation Society first.

Truer words were never posted. Thank you, E.F.

Comments:

I say this with absolutely no desire to hurt anyone's feelings or to be disrespectful, but to add my thoughts, directly and as honestly as possible, to this particular discussion thread.  Here is what I have been able to determine from looking at the Trafford and Ebay pages for Thornton Manor, reading the reviews and comments here, and just thinking this over for a little while:

Thornton Manor is a Real Person Fiction (RPF), written by a Mary Sue, published by a vanity press, shilled by folks who enjoy reading other people's sexual fantasies about someone they don't personally know.  Controversial as these things may be (you can Google them to see just how controversial), thems the facts, and as this kind of fiction doesn't appeal to me personally, I won't be buying a copy.

That Susan has written, vanity-published, and even passed on a copy of her fanfic to AR doesn't concern me in the slightest.  In fact, I am pleased to see yet another instance AR's graciousness in a situation that must feel a bit awkward (having fans pass things along for you to read, praise, consider for future projects, etc.).  What does concern me is using a fan community - one connected to a site known far and wide for its generosity and free downloads and info - for marketing purposes.  It feels antithetical to what Claudia has done here for so many years.  Personally, I think it's sketchy at best, and opportunistic at worst.

If I am wrong, I will gladly - and publicly - eat my words.

Hi

This is my first post, and I would like to respond to Rhoda's cutting and hurtful remarks about the author of the book

Thornton Manor........Rhoda you're passing judgment on someone who has put a lot of time and effort into this novel.....Either you need to get a life or perhaps there might be a little jealousy involved.......you didn't comment on the book or author, but you were blantantly cruel and had no business, I think, placing your barbs, which were so obviously intended to hurt another

This is my first and last post.......so Rhoda, get some manners and get a life....and if you want to attack me, go right ahead; I have a thick skin

Agree 100% with what Rhoda said.  Pls take this discussion elsewhere.  The G.B. is really not the place to run a private business.  And, as Rhonda points out, many people aren't at all comfortable with either the merchandise itself or with promoting it by using AR's name.

I'd like to suggest that this lovefest for Susan's book be taken to the Discussion Party or elsewhere.   Not everyone here is enthusiastic or in love with the idea of trying to sell books or make money using Alan Rickman's name, or with the idea of exploiting Alan Rickman by writing him into an NC-17 storyline, SELF-publishing it, and then peddling it on ebay.

Thank you Zorra for that observation, I do in fact realize that I am not going to get anywhere with the screenplay agency in America and have now moved on to more local pastures like the UK Film council where they have been very helpful.  Angela Pell the scriptwriter of Snowcake have also been writing to me and has given me lots of encouragement.  If it doesn't get to film so be it, at least I tried.  It would only be the icing on the cake but I am quite happy with the filling.

puddingdale  I would never expect Alan or anyone else taking his place to act it exactly as the book, the bedroom scenes would be toned down for a start to what they were comfortable with.

Although Pudingdale and Ellen make excellent points, here's the main reason why "Thornton Manor" will never be a movie. The agency that "snapped up" Susan's book is a bonafide scam.

If you type "The Screenplay Agency" and "scam" into Google, you'll get many links to well-known and legitimate writer resource websites where discussions and complaints about this agency have taken place. This scam has been going on for a long time and is notorious in the publishing industry. Here is just one representative link to a discussion about it:

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20359

And here is one writer's lament, just one of MANY:

I only wish I had known about the Screenplay Agency before I spent $95, and many hours of my time. Plus the embarrassment now of telling my friends that I really DON'T have an agent! The Writer's Guild (whom I should have checked with at the beginning) said that they sign a contract with every writer that submits. Then they ask for the critique (which I paid for) and after giving one that calls for many changes, they refer you another company (yeah, sure!) that charges fees. Strange fees. The next one was going to be for $189! Then I woke up. RATS! Back to the drawing board, but glad that I only lost the $95.

Hi Puddingdale,

Sorry if I over reacted, but words can be misunderstood. And NO I do not hate you. You have your right to your opinion, even if it differs from mine, esp. if it differs to mine. I am sure Susan wants to hear from all sides, in oder to make the making of the movie (hopefully sometime  in the future) the best it can be, and with the writings of future stories. Of course there will have to be some changes when the story is taken from paper and made into something beautiful and believable on the screen. I am sure Susan knows that already. As it is right now I can only invision the story in my own mind, and isn't that what reading a story is all about, drifting away into a make believe world to get away from life's frantic pace? Now it is your turn to toss a tomato at me....still friends??????? Barbara

Professional actors and screenwriters are represented by their agents in all screenplay transactions (for various legal reasons).  If you dig into the stories which claim that a writer met a famous actor in a cafe and handed him a script, you will find that there were two agents involved and usually further professional connections as well.

Snow Cake
may have reached AR through the post, but his agent was involved and so was Pell's or the script never would have been taken seriously as a project.

An individual giving an actor a self-published fanfic is a gift, not a  submission for professional consideration.

Puddingdale, I think I've just taken over from you in the "news no one wants to hear" department.  Further bad news: You can't hire an agent.  An agent only agrees to represent you if s/he feels you have talent, professional skills, and good commericial potential.

In case anyone didn't see them, someone put all the HP OOTP "behind the scenes" and movie clips on Youtube. If you do a search for "Alan Rickman", then click on "sort by date added", it's the fifth one down.

Also, someone did a video of many of Alan's appearances (no audio, though). Some of them are from here *g* and some aren't. The video is the fourth one down.

Has anyone seen this site or tried this? The Rasterbator Despite its name, it's not perverted, I promise!  It's a program that allows you to upload an image and then print it out on multiple sheets of 8.5x11 paper to make a huge poster.  I am so doing this, as soon as I figure out which picture of Alan I want covering an entire wall of my bedroom!  If anyone else tries this, I'd love to see the results.

Well, of course AR has the best of manners - we all know and appreciate that. It is what makes him special among persons continuously surrounded by the public and almost always watched.

I never meant to imply that Rickman tossed the book back at Susan. Why should he? It is a great honour to have something written for you. And I think it is natural that an actor would ask for a screenplay when hearing that one of the characters was written for him. Screenplays are what might be turned into movies, not books.

That is why I hope another dream might come true for Susan and that AR might get back to her. But Thornton Manor is not Snow Cake and a lot of changes will have to be made to the screenplay in order to convince AR to act in the movie. For instance, I cannot imagine he will feel obliged to unnecessarily explicit bed scenes - not after his contract for Snow Cake saying that he would be covered up to the chin. And the character might need some dark secrets or flaws in order to be interesting for an actor of Alan's calibre. The comical elements of the plot might be enhanced for comic relief - there is some great potential here.

Well, I know you hate me now, because most here seem to find Susan's book perfect as it is. And I hate being the devil's advocate. I like harmony and friendship and I do not want to offend anyone, less of all Susan who put so much into her book. Going after one's dreams is a good motto and I look up to that.

I just feel that too much praise is never good for a project, especially now that the screenplay might be in the making. Criticism has mostly helped me just as much as praise - both is needed to get on. I wish someone else could take the part of the bad critic, but I seem to be the only one available for the dirty job.

14. Alan Rickman

The thinking lady's crumpet, Alan Rickman started the Hollywood trend of using Englishmen when supreme villainy was required in a blockbuster. He stole the show from Bruce Willis, as the despicably charming Hans Gruber, in Die Hard (1988) and was far sexier than the mullet haired Kevin Costner in Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves (1991). The secret of Rickman's charm lies in his voice. Is it just us, or was Marvin the robot actually sexy in The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy?

Channel 4 have one of their interminable 100 Best of programmes tonight. This time its 100 Sexiest People. We watched from about 80 down to 50 whilst having supper then lost interest and found Freddie and Queen on another channel. My sixteen year old just came in here from his room and said he just switched to Channel 4 and Alan Rickman was No.14!!!

"Bum" said I (or something similar) "I Missed it!" but No! The little darling said I could rewind with the aid of the wondrous Sky+ box and so got to see Germaine Greer say the only sexy thing about him was his voice (like she ever said anything sensible!!) and my husband's favourite Rowan Pelling waxing lyrical. Mainly clips from RHPoT but a nice pic from Judas Kiss and a couple of guys rabbiting on about him being a sexy baddy or something!

No 14 is pretty impressive though, I was thinking if he was going to be in there I probably had missed him before No.80!!

Susan you are totally welcome for my humble review of your book. As I said I was not an expert or anything, just mentioned how your book effected me. So if what Marlene says about you meetings with Alan Rickman is true, you did not have your book tossed right back in your face for a screen play as I have been informed. So glad to hear that he has the best of manners and of course would graciously except the story written with him in mind for a part in it. I didn't think that sounded like something he would do. HarryPotterGirlClone,   Maybe you can find a way to get your Mom connected.

Yes, Susan has met him quite a few times this past year... and I have a feeling she's going to meet him many times more.

You can get the book directly from Susan.  If you're on eBay put this number in the "Search" area and it'll bring you to Susan's latest listing.   190085983601     If you ask, she probably will autograph it for you.

Or, if you don't have PayPal or don't get into eBay, e-mail me with your return eMail address and I'll pass it on to Susan (in case she hasn't seen your message here).

The book is 167 pages with a beautiful cover which contains Susan's photograph in an insert.

On eBay, you can always find loads of Alan Rickman movies for you and your Mom, both on DVD and VHS formats.

Yes, Robin Hood is a really good one.

One of the nicest things about Alan Rickman is that he appeals to people of all ages.  And like fine wine, he gets better with age.

I hope you get Thornton Manor...

Hey!  Thanks for the info on the book.  I am a fairly new AR fan and I wish that my mom had an internet connection because she would love this group.  It is so totally cool that Susan emailed you the chapters.  So this woman, has she met AR for real? Where can I get this book?  How long is it? I remember one time my mom was visiting me and she asked me to fetch some AR vids. My local video store's collection of AR movies is sub-par at best.  Anyway, one of the movies I got was Robin Hood, even though we had already seen it.  You know the one where AR plays Sheriff of Nottingham (or as I like to say, Naughty-ham)  Anyway, up until this point, I really hadn't thought much of AR; that is until I flipped the DVD box to read the description (something I do out of habit).  On the back was AR himself, looking fine in the old English style.  I thought to myself "I'd do him!"    So now I have been converted and am a fan of AR, even though he is way older than me, I am 22.  Please respond because I would love to get my hands on this book ASAP!

Hello Everyone,

Just Me, You asked several questions to which I'd like to respond.

Thornton Manor was written by DH's own Susan Siracusa, an avid (gosh, that's an understatement!) Alan Rickman fan who lives in the United Kingdom.  I "met" Susan (via e-mail) in September of 2005 through an eBay purchase I made from her.  Our friendship has grown and continues to thrive as we e-mailed back and forth practically every day.  In one e-mail she mentioned that she had a story in her head and with unrelenting badgering, er, um, I mean encouragement from me and others close to her, she started putting the story down on "paper" and e-mailed the first chapter to me.

As Thornton Manor came to life, Susan would e-mail me each chapter as she finished it, to look over, proofread, and comment upon.  I can honestly say the first chapter caught me immediately and every chapter thereafter had the same affect!  No sooner had I read the last word, that I shamelessly begged her to HURRY and send me the next one (even though it wasn't yet written)!

So, not only have I read Thornton Manor, I'm one of two American friends Susan mentions on the book's Acknowledgments page.

Thornton Manor (which originally had a different working title) became so much a part of my "must read" mentality, that as each chapter appeared in my e-mail ... the rest of the world was put on "hold".  Yes, it's that riveting.

From Day 1 Susan's characters became people I knew and loved.  With Susan's descriptions and character development, I could envision this story as a movie playing in my mind, as I watched the characters move from scene to scene.

"Why is AR connected to it?"

Please know, I'm not speaking for Susan, but only for myself.   I believe because of Susan's love and admiration for Alan Rickman it was only natural that a character in her book would be based on someone we all consider to be very special in our lives.

Mr. Rickman -- the man we see at interviews -- the man we see in a myriad of characters he portrays on stage and screen -- and the man we see devoting himself to so many humanitarian and charitable events.

How many of us have fantasized at meeting him, having a conversation with him, and becoming his friend?  Susan has achieved this by bringing a part of Alan Rickman's essence to Thornton Manor.  Once you read the book, you'll see exactly what I mean.

I'm glad to see that you love to read, and honestly believe you'll enjoy Thornton Manor.   Susan has a fabulously unique talent for writing, and particularly for story-telling.

Thornton Manor is definitely a page-turner.

Just Me, Susan Siracusa wrote it. She is another fan sometimes visiting this board and she created one of the characters after AR. She gave the book to him at some event and he spontaneously asked her to give him a screenplay. Obviously, he rather reads screenplays than books.

You can buy the book at www.trafford.com as it is self-published, not yet available in bookstores. Or maybe still at ebay where Susan sells it herself. If you want to know more details or have my full opinion about the book before you buy it, just send me an e-mail

I am glad Susan got a good review from you, Barbara. I read the book as well and it was easy to understand that the making of the book must have been a dream come true for Susan. Not to mention the lots of work and discipline writing a book takes. Therefore, I bow before you, Susan, because I mostly lack the energy to put so much effort in one project. Well done! I hope you can make more dreams come true in the future.

Still, for honesty's and neutrality's sake I must say that I do not agree with Barbara when she says the book will touch everyone's heart. And I hope it is okay to pair praise with criticism here, because the book deserves as many opinions as possible. It was a page-turner, oh yes! And the references to AR were quite amusing and vivid. Kind of an hommage, to say the least. But to me, the AR adoration was a tinge too obvious and his character so perfect, mysterious and suffering that he seemed out of space. I could not help thinking Rebecca meets Jane Eyre meets Sense and Sensibility meets ... I kept waiting for the final twist - and that indeed made me read on and on, but maybe I have read too many books or I am just plain clever  but it was all quite obvious to me. Mind, if you are truly madly deeply in love with AR and long for some NC17 scenes to spice up your imagination, you will LOVE this book. And if you are curious what other fans might dream of when they gaze smilingly into space after having watched Snow Cake for the umpteenth time. Or if you lack the words to explain to your boyfriend what AR has that he does not *g*

Do not misinterpret me. Thornton Manor is great fun to read. I just wanted to warn those who do not yet know whether they want to buy the book that they might find the praising of AR too much and the plot too melodramatic or predictable.

I assure you I do not mean to offend. I am open for discussion and curious about other opinions that might come up. You might throw tomatoes of course, if it helps.

Good morning all, I ordered Susan's book, "Thornton Manor" about a month ago, well they did tell me it would take 7-9 days after they got my check to come. Was a real nail biting time, I will tell you waiting for it. For some unknown reason I could not wait for this book to come. Every time I heard a car door close outside or the dog barked I would jump up and peer out the windows. But let me be the first to tell you that it was well worth waiting for. I had just expected to read a few chapters and do the normal things around the house. Well once I sat down and opened the cover , I was mesmerized. I could not put it down. The TV was on and my husband was watching it, but I could not even tell you what was on or what was said. I was completely lost in thoughts, not my own. Preperation time for dinner time came and went and my husband had to pry me out of the covers of he book. Went to the kitchen in a huff to fix dinner. Just could not wait to get back to it. At 2 am I finally turned the last page. Aw what an experience....girls if you have not read it...you are missing out. And yes you can imagine one of the characters in the book as our guy Alan Rickman and that just makes the adventure more special. I am not an expert or anything, just a woman, but if this book does not touch your heart....well it just will, no doubt in my mind. Just wanted you to know. Have a great day gals. Barbara

A question. Do you believe in this:

"The twin joys of professional acclaim and financial success have failed to raise Alan Rickman´s public demeanour above that of misery guts. When a distinguished drama critic approached the dour-faced star of the harry potter movie seeking autographs for his young children, Rickman signed in exasperation before accepting the proffered pen. But when asked to sign as Professor Snape, he snapped: `My name is Alan Rickman. I´dont give a toss about your sodding kids!` After much grovelling, he grudgingly relent and srawled an illegible Snape before bolting. Playing obnoxious villains obviously isn´t too difficult then, Alan?"

We only had three entries in our AR birthday card contest this year.  Between the three...its VERY hard to name just one winner (they are all soooo good!).  I know all three put heart and soul into their creations so I am going to name Chalbh, Cyntilla, and ilwe@wanadoo.fr as our grand prize winners!!!!  All three will recieve the Alan Rickman READ posters!

Speaking of the READ posters.  I just have to spill the beans on a truly huge helper with this contest's grand prizes.  Shortly after I announced the contest, Marlene contacted me and offered the poster for the grand prize and absolutely would not take any money for it.  She was so sweet in saying that she wanted to contribute to our group in this way.  She was patient with me and held off mailing it until after I got into my new apartment and then....I was terribly late letting her know it arrived safely (I am sooo bad!).  Any way, now that she knows that we are going to award three posters, she has already offered to help on those too.  Thank you Marlene!  You have been a blessing!

Chalebh, Cyntilla, and ilwe@wanadoo.fr, email me your mailing address and I'll get the posters out to you as soon as I can!  Congratulations!!!

Does anyone else feel all goofy and shy and embarrassed when you see all the pix on the main webpage and the download screens of AR appearing to look, smiling, (or maybe more so, NOT smiling) right in your eyes? I'm glad SOMEone in the world can make me feel 14 again. It's like sneaking looking in a yearbook to see some guy's picture and then closing it again because you feel so enamoured.

Funny what some men can do. Maybe the fact that he acts so blissfully unaware of it is part of the charm.

And I already said it, earlier below, but I am so happy that his parents got it on--let's see, that would be in, what, June 1945...truly one of the first boomers.

Birthdays
The actor Alan Rickman has just begun filming as Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, based on the Stephen Sondheim musical. Directed by Tim Burton, the dark tale of the Fleet Street barber also stars Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp and will be released next year. Rickman has been in five Harry Potter films playing the sly Potions Master, Severus Snape, and the latest, The Order of the Phoenix, is currently in postproduction. He made his name internationally as the terrorist Hans Gruber in Die Hard, which led to a succession of villainous roles. He has a knack of stealing the show from the top billed actors. In Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, his portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham outshone the star Kevin Costner . About his reluctance to play the celebrity game, he says: “If people want to know who I am it’s all in my work. Alan Rickman is 61 today.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALAN!.

YOU ARE LOOKING SO.OO.OO.O....GOOD AT 61!
WARMEST WISHES TO A TALENTED ACTOR AND A BEAUTIFUL MAN.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOUR PERFORMANCE IN SWEENEY TODD AND HOPEFULLY, SOME STAGEWORK TOO!

And if I had it in my power,

To restart the world with a whisper

                        so everyone could see:

Not the actor, artist, or writer

                        who is known far and wide;

Not even the poet or activist

you'd want to be on your side...

But just a simple man who

Hello,

Let me join you all in wishing Alan a very happy birthday and many wonderful years to come in good health. My grandmother always used to say that a good health is man's greatest treasure and I really think she was right. Anyway... I hope he has a special day, today. Well there are enough people who think about him (and not just today LOL). I just wondered. Alan's birthday is exactly three weeks after Rima's and mine is exactly 3 weeks after his. (March 14th) really funny. But I wish him and of course her, too, all the best.

About the dubbing. I agree with Sue that I never like films being dubbed. Nobody can replace Alan's voice by the way. It is a beautiful voice and I love to listen to his british English. So, yes, I rather hear the original version of films with (or without) undertitles. I wish you all a wonderful day on this special day.

Still on the dubbed films issue, I have bad luck but Alan dubbers in Portuguese are absolutely bad. Oh I suffer from time to time! I'm glad people invented DVD!

I have tiny difficulty on British films, because the course I took of English during 7 years was American English, I got very used to the way of pronouncing words, but guess what, being in love with Alan made me feel British accent as home! Now I have an absolutely British English.

About dubbing, I always watch English movies in the original version subtitled in French. Alan has several dubbers in France but my favorite is the HP one (he also does Robert Redford or Tommy Lee Jones) but nothing compared to Alan's lol

I have to say I hate dubbed films of any nationality. I think all films should be heard in the language they are made with subtitles. That way you can hear the original actor's intonations  even if you are following the subtitles!

Favourite foreign films of mine are Jules et Jim, Y Tu Mama Tambien, and a wonderful Korean film called Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter & Spring.

Rosi, imho the "German" words in Die Hard are actually Austrian - it doesn't sound very German . Of course, there is also the possiblity that American speakers spoke German for the film.

Hikity, yes, I also appreciate our native film industry and I totally love the style, language, etc, but I prefer watching movies as they are supposed to be watched. Actors and actresses, as it was noticed here already, pay much attention to their voices and it's a part of the movie art, one picture can give only a picture. However for those who can't catch the speaking, they'd better watch it dubbed cuz otherwise they would loose the sense of a movie entirely. IMHO

rickwoman, I do not care whether I watch British or American movies, I understand them equally. Of course, British accent is more clear, so yes I agree with you.

Over again to the 'Dubbing' topic:

For me, as a not native English speaker, it makes a great difference between an English and an American film.
I do comprehend each real British actor but I have many difficulties with American movies. For example: I saw "Brokeback Mountain" on DVD in original language and didn't understand one single word. Gladly I had the subtitles so I could follow the matter.

I have one question about 'Sweeney Todd':
I wanted to know more about that theme (like any theme related to AR) and bought a book titled "A string of pearls : The original tale of Sweeney Todd" . Now I am amid and no Judge Turpin appeared yet!

Maybe I've got the wrong book?????

Vicky, I have another example for you: Hans Gruber, german terrorist par excellence in the german version is called Jack Gruber so I second Alfan, you really have to eat your hat!

And Hickity, you're of course right about the quality of the german dubbing. I just find it to be annoying if I the actors are really good and their performance loses depth due to the dubbing.

Jéssika, perhaps we should move our samba and Brazil discussion to some other place, why don't you send me an email? and yes, I haven't forgotten all my portuguese

I have Love Actually DVD, as it's Brazilian version I can manage to choose (in the DVD) to watch in Portuguese or subtitled.

IN the Portuguese version (and that's bad) the Portuguese girl, Colin Firth's girlfriend turned into SPANISH!

That killed me.

ROSI! WAIT A SECOND! You were from Brasil???

Thanks for asking about Carnaval! I live far awaaaay from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, so I get the Mangueira and other schools on TV. In the market today for a coincidence the TV was on and as traditional in this time of the year in the commercials the Mangueira anthem was playing!

The real problem about watching dubbed versions is that it kills completely the actors work. Their voices are as important as their eyes and their body language. Here in Brasil we have teeeerrible dubbers for films, but I'll tell you, for animations? (and Ice Age is classical example) We have a high quality team of actors sometimes better than the original casting actors. But I say, ONLY on animations.

Don't worry, Yulia, we have very good dubbed films -it's a firm business with a long tradition in Germany and this is o.k. Why shouldn't we watch film in our language? The tiny little problem is what Rosi said: our man's voice is so special that it is obviously very difficult to find a matching German voice, which is a pity, indeed. However, there are some terrible original voices which have been dubbed by much better ones and it happens so that films from other countries - there often without a special success - are hilarious and become very successful here. All in all, I am very satisfied with our film industry. What I would appreciate, however, would be the possibility to choose between the German and the original version on TV (at least for English, Spanish and French films). New technology will hopefully provide us with this feature in the near future!

Yall don't forget the RADA donation for AR's birthday!  Its a beautiful thing to do in honor of our hero!

I have had this email for some time but have just gotten around to reading it.  I don't know if this has been announced here or not so I'll risk duplicating someone.

Here's a mail I received from a Steve Tudor at Real Wood Records concerning the song "Not Alan Rickman".

Hi.
We thought you might like to know that a remastered version of Adam Leonard's 'Not Alan Rickman' single (+ it's original b-side 'Robot Escape Bid') is released by Real Wood Records on 12th Feb on the album 'LEONARDISM'. Initial quantities come with a free 'Not Alan Rickman' badge!

For more details see:
http://www.myspace.com/realwoodrecords

Best wishes,
Steve Tudor,
RWR.

I just ordered mine!  I hope I'm not to late for a badge!

Gosh, I'm still light headed over the latest pics and video of AR from last week!

Oh, I just wanna say that here in Russia we have an opportunity to watch movies in English, in Russian and sometimes some other languages, even if the original one is English. And, of course, it can be subtitled. As for me, I always watch movies in English and understand it completely if it's an original language and if it is in German, Spanish or Italian, I also watch an original version, but catch as a rule, 90 %.

So, it's very bad not to hear the voices of real heroes, but if there is no way, I feel sorry.

Rosi
2/19/07 at 11:16 AM

Comments:
Well, I guess people here are just to lazy to content themselves with the original versions plus subtitles and then there are a lot of people working in the "dubbing industry" or whatever it is called so I think there's not going to be any change. When I moved here from Brazil I was a fan of Dirty Dancing until I saw the movie in german television. It completely cured me until I got hold of a DVD with the original sound.

The "german voices" of AR are mostly horrible. The guy doing the sherif of Nottingham and Hans Gruber sounds a bit like Michael Douglas, just nastier so in the german version these guys are just plain mean and I never understood the ballyhoo about Hans Gruber being a totally new kind of bad guy until I had the opportunity to hear THE MAN's voice with it. Of course I had to go and buy the DVD. What's still worse is the dubbing of Dogma. Jeez, Metatron is the voice of god and they give it to some guy with a squeeky voice without any depth at all.

Sorry for the ranting, but I needed to vent really badly.

Since there is an US airbase close by there are a few cinemas showing movies in english but that's without subtitles and that is sometimes a bit complicated. I remember trying to watch 8 mile and must confess, I didn't get half of the movie. So dear hubby and I bought a big screen tv and are now our video rental's company best customers. Sadly they don't have a copy of Snow Cake so I guess I have to wait until May to get it as a birthday present.

Greetings to South America and have a lot of fun during Carnaval.
PS: How's the Mangueira's desfile this year?

Here in Brasil we have the opportunity to choose whether we want to enter in the movie with subtitle or dubbing (and being not only an Alan lover but also a cinema lover of course I can't stand films with dubbing! That's why it's been years I don't watch a film on TV).

Jessika, it's the same in Cuba. I went to a Steven Spielberg movie in La Habana and they used Spanish subtitles for the Habaneros/Habaneras.

Steven spent some time there to do promotion and meet up with the president of ICAIC, Omar Gonzales, in Miramar.
Spielberg, Gonzales and a friend of mine went to a restaurant called "La Ferminia" (very pricy for Cuban standard!) and talked about movie business in Cuba.
The discussion about subtitles went up, too.
But it's never been discussed to change that habit and until now the Gov. didn't.  - Most Cubans speak little English, if at all, anyway.

But I remember having seen "Goblet of Fire" in Spanish before the movie even hit the screen in Europe. Snape's voice was hilarious! High-pitched-gay-like and causing goosepimples.
So you're right, it's best to enjoy his many movies in the original version.

ROSI, you're German, aren't you?

You said you ALWAYS have to watch an Alan film with dubbing? (I don't know if the word is correct), because that's too sad!!

Here in Brasil we have the opportunity to choose whether we want to enter in the movie with subtitle or dubbing (and being not only an Alan lover but also a cinema lover of course I can't stand films with dubbing! That's why it's been years I don't watch a film on TV).

Once there was a rumor that my government would forbidden subtitled (I don't know if it's right too) films because of the "national language" or so. And a bunch of cinema lovers freaked out immediately!

Is there a law in your country about it?

You just can't imagine how bad Snape's dubber voice is.

The internet really is a source of very interesting information. There's nothing you can't find.
Just now I stumbled across a site citing all the people doing the german dubbing for foreign actors. Of course our man was there too. Here's the link, if anybody is interested http://www.synchronkartei.de/index.php?action=show&type=actor&id=365.
If you click on the dubber's (is that a word???) name and scroll until you see a tiny microphone left of the name, you can hear a voice sample. Just so you british and american people know how lucky you are to hear AR himself in cinema. I always have to wait until the DVD's out so I don't have to suffer these sometimes horrid voices (see especially the guy who did Hans Gruber's part. What a nasty voice!)

But then we always knew that nobody could compare to AR's voice, didn't we? I guess, that's why he doesn't have only one guy to do his dubbing, as they never found anyone even remotely comparable.

Alfan - According to ancient (British, anyway) tradition, if the groom fails to turn up for the wedding it's the Best Man's duty to marry the bride instead.

However, this does not mean the bride should tie up the groom and lock him in a closet just before the ceremony, in order to get to the Best Man.  This sort of thing is frowned upon.

Seems bad marketing to have Alan on tv pushing the dvd on the Thursday and on Friday you can't see it at the local supermarket where it might just catch the eye of the average viewer who saw the interview! Ah well!

Around the time when 'MNiRC' was cancelled at NYC, here was mentioned a snippet of info regarding AR.  He was seen walking early in the morning (3:00 am?) swinging some kind of racket.  This happened while he was still in London.

Squash-something? (Sports and me do not match, sorry.)

Besides, let's not forget AR's brother gives tennis lessons... Imho Mr Isaacs, there's a high possibility that what you've heard is true, so go for it the next time you see him!

I loved the way he looked, he can go unshaven and scruffy any time. Did anyone else feel like they totally rushed his interview, i mean i think they should let him finish answering the question they asked before they cut him off and ask another...but a little ( most wonderfully sexy) Alan is better than no Alan at all. I hate this time when he is busy with a movie because usually we dont see much of him and the DHGB is kinda slow but boy, am i glad he did this interview.

I have to agree with the " end of a glorious career" comment, i think he is very modest and doenst think that his singing will be up to par.  As Kevin Smith says in his commentary " Alan never thinks his stuff is good enough and thinks ' ah, i could do better' when infact his stuff is awesome........he is in my opinion an humble guy........sexy too.

I love the way he sort of frowns when people are asking him a question as though he's really concentrating on the words you are saying. You know, he might not be as "pretty" as he was 15 years ago, but he looks damn good for 61!!! And did anyone else notice how snug his pants fit around his legs? I kept looking at his thighs. But I'm sort of deviant that way.

Hey, I know this is a bit of an ask but does anyone know where I can find the clip from Dark Harbor of Alan's character talking about what love means to him?   Even the audio file would be fantastic and I'd really appreciate it.

Here it is michelle.  A beautiful part of Dark Harbor.

It was lovely to see Alan on BBC Breakfast this morning.  We don't see enough of him on our TVs.

I haven't watched it yet as MPH is hoovering and will only take the mick anyway.

I shall get it on to dvd and then on the pc but as he who must be obeyed will be ensconced for the evening I might not get it done till tomorrow morning. I have a day off tomorrow as I'm going up to London to see Jason Isaacs in a Pinter play so will have time in the morning to mess about if nobody else can do it 'til then.

Very amusing bit when the presenters were discussing what certain flowers meant..Alan ..all attentive, and quite a giggle for tulips...means you're a good lover , apparantly...as if he needed telling! Anyway, a lovely Valentines Day Present!

He looked good, he was wearing that jacket we've being seeing a lot of lately, a black shirt and what looked like  fawn/beige canvas trousers and of course black shoes. he talked of Snow Cake and some emails had been sent in to ask him about Sweeney Todd, he was unshaven he said because next week he has to be shaved and his throat cut. The interviewer said it's a good job he came in this week then and Alan said yes, if the knife slips---.

Ok,girls, saw about 5 mins of the interview at work, but I was working at the same time,so missed a huge chunk,so please forgive me ok...

He was mainly talking about Snowcake and they showed 2 clips,I think it was 2,and he was talking about how he had to react when he found out about Lindas autism...now,all I can remember is that his hair was looking great, all over the show, but great, leaving it alone by the looks of things and its a gorgeous grey...he looked a little tired, but then dont we all at 9 in the morninghe was laughing and looked to be enjoying himself...that my friends is all I can say for now, sorry,I was like I said working.....Im sure that we will be getting updates real soon....

Cant wait to see the whole interview,I was taking a risk by putting it on in the 1st place, but that man is so worth it

thanks for warning us about the interview. I've seen it (it was about 9.05 a.m. British time) and it was very special. I tried to record it and I hope I succeeded. If so, I will ask my hubby if he can arrange it to let you all enjoy it. Cross your fingers that we can do it. If someone has done this before, please let us know how to show this little interview here.

It was very nice and he seemed very relaxed and laughed loud, too. I am sure you will like it (those who have not seen it, yet) Alan really looked good here and was very nice.

If someone else manages to share the interview before us, that's all right, too, of course, but otherwise we will try it.

I’m more comfortable with people who are a bit older, especially older girls, which is a real curse, because they are not interested in a younger guy."

Carolyn! My other partners in "boy lust" crime! I think there is hope for us! My one question for Dan has been answered! "So, Dan, do ya like older women??" Ha ha ha!!!

I had no idea that there's a VHS version of the director's cut. The ancient VHS tape of Mesmer sitting on my shelf definitely isn't, so there do seem to be two different versions. I'm glad you own a copy of the director's cut; the other version really is quite dreadful...

INTJ thanks for making the interview downloadable I would have done so myself, if I had any idea how.  I am to say it in AR's own words not quite but almost "completely computer illiterate."
BTW I think this interview shows once more how serious Alan takes his work. Must be pretty annoying for a director to work with an actor who takes the time to do background research on the person he's supposed to play and gets so protective of them, that he will absolutely refuse to act out of character just because it might make the film sell better

And sue thanks for the clip from snow cake.
I was wondering if they really had water in the tub, 'cause if it really was that cold, shouldn't there be some steam coming from it? Or am I missing something?

Excellent finding, Carolyn!!

That was an interesting interview. Its nice to see that Dan seems to be a fairly normal guy, if not a little more mature than most at his age. I was basically like he was when I was that age and I was really reminded of myself when he went from acting 30 to chuckling about the "..long and hard!" thing. haha That was so me...30-12 in 5 seconds at that age! haha. Dan really is pretty funny, looking forward to hearing more about the play. Lord knows I probably won't be able to see it.

Thanks again for the article

Didnt Alan say ( or some one) that the hot tub day was the coldest day of the shoot, every other day was like hot and warm and this day when they had to shoot the scene it actually snowed and it was freezing, well he looks cold there. Littel red nose, red cheeks and little mitties on. He so darn cute............hee hee

Cats and Carolyn - My pleasure. : )

Cats - I noticed different angles, etc., in several scenes. It's not that entire scenes were replaced, but often different reaction shots were used, different camera angles etc. Oh, and I need to correct myself: The director's cut is NOT 8 minutes longer after all. They included the original trailer on the R1 DVD which adds a couple of minutes to the total running time. Sorry about that. Still, the R2 version differs slightly and the quality is dreadfully poor compared to the R1 director's cut, which is a real shame. : ((

Thanks so much for the link, Rosi!

Here's a downloadable version of the interview (I've edited out the non-AR related bits):
http://download.yousendit.com/17EBD84E35A44877

For all that are interested: I bought the Region 2 DVD and compared it to my Region 1 DVD of Mesmer, the latter of which is the director's cut version.

It it such a shame and I am deeply disappointed that they did not use the director's cut for the Region 2 DVD. It's nice that Mesmer is available on Region 2 at last, but I really wish the people in charge had done their homework and NOT simply slapped the mutilated VHS version (including poor sound track) onto DVD. The director's cut released on Region 1 DVD is infinitely superior to the dreadful Region 2 cut. On the Region 1 director's cut DVD there are no sound issues, it is 8 minutes longer, featuring scenes that, imho, are essential to the story, and using different footage, replacing existing scenes with different (and superior) takes and angles than the Region 2 DVD. The latter is truly dreadful in comparison. If anyone doesn't have Mesmer on DVD yet I recommend buying the Region 1 director's cut, NOT the Region 2 DVD. It's beyond me why they used the vastly inferior version for Region 2...  < /gripe of the day>  ; )

sue - Lovely quote of the day!

I've been thinking of investing in a record deck that plugs into your pc to transform vinyl onto disc and one of the models has the capabilities to do tapes which would be handy to get all my old stuff on to the pc/iPod. It costs about £90 and I just need to get my act together to order it.

Well it finally happened. It had a vivid dream with AR in it last night!  It didn't last too long but what I remember was great! I was taking off his stage or movie makeup with Qtips and gauze sponges like I use at work with the dentist. I had to get very close to his face to get off eye makeup. Once I had the makeup off I rubbed his cheeks with my hands! He looked like Hans Gruber or Valmont with the dark beard and was about that age, 40 something. He was quiet while I did this, as if it were a very routine thing. After that we were both with a number of people getting lunch at a buffet table. I was only choosing salad and vegetables and AR was teasing me about this! So ironic since I'm the person who gave him dozens of "lovely cakes" last fall!  The rest of the dream is less distinct, sad to say.  I woke up this morning amazed that I remembered the dream!  I posted the dream on my live journal too. What a way to start your day!

I can't believe it... after weeks of useless sermons by me, finally people are talking my language concerning Sweeney Todd  I saw the new Broadway version in London and I am so curious about the movie. And AR will not give us crap as the Judge. I think it is a great part for him and he will surprise us all with his singing. The songs are not exactly easy, but determination can work miracles. And I trust that our man will not be content with less than a miracle

Re: Sweeney Todd....Depp & Bonham-Carter have been taking singing lessons since October. I also read that Alan, as well, had been taking lessons at a studio in London (I don't remember the name). All of the actors had to basically audition for Sondheim to see if they could cut it.

Sacha Baron-Cohen's singing parts are going to be done in a "rap" style (ala Jim Broadbent in "Moulin Rouge"). There's been two different rumors going around about that. One is that he couldn't do the singing well but Burton really wanted him for the part and the second is that he could sing, but his vocal range either wasn't high or low enough for the songs (which, really doesn't make sense because all they'd have to do would be to lower or raise the key of the song).

Electronics can only do so much! There has to be at least some base with which to begin. This will really be an interesting movie to say the least!

LOL...the "purists" on the Sondheim boards are just besides themselves over this!

Dear New Jan,

I completely agree with you about those two examples, the songs from "Private Lives" and "Help I'm A Fish". I"m hoping that he'll have more luck and/or better coaching in "Sweeney Todd"!

The songs are a completely different style in "Sweeney". Check out some of them on You Tube. I especially like the opening of the show, and it's reprised again at the end with Judge Turpin getting a little solo. Did you here AR belting out the Russian song near the end of "Rasputin"? That's what gives me hope!  ( I can't stand to hear myself sing-along to the car radio and karaoke? Forget it!!!! Bring on the Handel! I can do a decent "Halleluiah Chorus" but only as a 1st soprano!)

I remember in the Hour interview he said " lets find out if either of us can sing". and then he continued to say " they " theres computers, and if you sing flat they'll unflatten it" So i dont think he is too worried about how he sounds because they can make him sound better than he is. Didnt they have a sound check a while back and it was  reported that  all three, Alan, Johnny and Helena can sing thier parts but Sasha Cohen cant. So his voice must be good enough to salvage.Still,Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman in a movie together, what a day.

I have a sneaky suspicion that like many actors, he has a good voice but isn't "a singer". The little I've heard from "Rasputin" and "Return of the Native" gives me that opinion

I believe he would have had singing lessons at RADA.

However, we've also heard him singing on the Private Lives download and in 'Help I'm a Fish', and whereas IMO the song in HIAF was so dreadful nothing much could be done with it, the PL recording wouldn't have had me casting him in a musical either.

Perhaps the Judge's part requires the songs to be 'put across' rather than sung?

Dear Cats

The isbn # of the Sweeney Todd book is:

ISBN 1-55783-065-7

Applause Musical Library

"Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"

A Musical Thriller

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Book by Hugh Wheeler

Introduction by Christopher Bond

Available in paper back at amazon.com for under $11.00

They also have a DVD of the Lansbury/Hearn performance.

By the way, there are lots of clips of this and other productions on You Tube, including The Judge's songs and duets with Sweeney! It makes my mind boggle to imagine AR singing this stuff.  I have a sneaky suspicion that like many actors, he has a good voice but isn't "a singer". The little I've heard from "Rasputin" and "Return of the Native" gives me that opinion. I don't count "Truly Madly Deeply", it was not intended to be classical singing.  I think we're all going to be pleasantly surprised! ( I happen to sing unprofessionally in a choir and can't sing pop songs if my life depended on it, but prefer Mozart or Bach as it suits my kind of voice better.)

Hello,

This is a different topic, but I wanted to recommend reading the book from the show "Sweeney Todd".  I found it in my local library under the "Theatre" section, searching by the title.  It is a hard cover book with photographs from the original production as well as later productions. There is an interesting history of the origination of the show and the entire show, line for line, including song lyrics. It read it on a vacation last weekend and liked it so much I may order my own copy from Amazon.com.

My library also has a video tape of the show with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. I plan to check it out soon! You'll all love "The Judge's" creepy, smarmy character! It's brilliant casting! I could imagine AR in the part as I read the book!

There's even a photo of the judge undressed and flogging himself! ( The actor in the photo is no camparison to Our Man!)

The photos did make me wish AR would grow his beard or a goatee for the part, but recent photos don't look like he has!

Oh well, you can't have everything can you?

Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman star in the story of a man with a traumatic past and a weight on his shoulders. Offset by a brilliant showing from Weaver playing an autistic mother with an unusual grieving process. Gently charming.

Girls, awfull as it might be, the quality of a DVD is not based on the fact who sells it. The problem lies within the production.

I recall that there was a major problem with the second DVD of HP1.

But maybe if enough people report their problems play.com or other distibutors might contact the production company.

But don't let your Sunday be spoiled

There are two types of postman, the first who delivers a couple of letters and makes it sound like you have a dozen parcels on the floor and the other who manages to deposit a pile of mail almost silently!

This morning I must have had the latter. A slight clonk and flap and I though "Bugger the Snowcake dvd hasn't arrived!" But when I went downstairs I found the dvd plus about eight letters!

So the good news is that yes, there is a 20 minute "Making of" feature. There are deleted scenes, loads  of them! At least a dozen!! Yes the hot-tub scene is there and no, he doesn't get in it!!LOL

"Actually, she's my wife" is there too! Plus loads more.

The bad news was that I put the dvd in the player with our big tv and the deleted scenes played fine but when I tried the "Making of", it made a lot of grinding sounds and just played the last 50 seconds. That happened twice and so I scurried up here and it worked fine on the pc. I shall be interested to see if anybody else has a similar problem and if so I might sent it back (after a few more viewings!LOL)

It just looked off scriped. Just received an email from Play.com saying my copy of Snowcake has been dispatched today and should take 3-5 days. Hopefully it will be here on Saturday if it's as quick as Antonia Quirke's book which arrived yesterday after a similar email on Monday.

I'm already a third of the way through the book and enjoying it immensely. It may not be everybody's cup of tea, you really need to be a film and actor addict to get all the references and there's lots of swearing and her full sexual history!LOL I couldn't read it in the office at lunch break as I kept laughing outloud and the boss is pretty straight faced!

Sorry if I sounded a bit unclear....lets just say there is a character in the book that is unmistakably Alan, but he has a different name!   Does that sound better?

All will become Crystal once read!

Susan,

I've never quite understood from the way it is worded, as it's not clear...

" I have portrayed him as one of the characters in my book"

Does that mean you wrote a fictional character with another name -- with Alan Rickman 'in mind', or that you have written Alan Rickman himself into the book as a character?

Sorry, Sno!  The title of the video is: Alan Rickman, Variety Club 2001 by "madika 555". If you put his name in the search box and then check "by date added", it's the third vid down.

Tango, we love you. Take your time.

I was very close to my own grandmother, so I understand you have other things on your mind now... but rest assured, to many of us, you are the laughter in many a boring day. And you will still be whenever you return.

Cheers to you!

Well, I guess that's the day I find out whether I love JK or hate her!  And we all know what that depends on.  I'm sure I'm not alone here.

Well, although that "neked" support is unfounded adn utterly ridiculous the picture did make me laugh.  ( Alan has done a nuddie part when he was younger in the play The Grass Widowm and we all know the dive-the walk in DH), but the real news of July 21 is founded and exciting. Its going to be a great year, getting married, seeing OOTP, and the release of Deathly Hollows. But i might be in NY on my honeymoon when the book comes out,,,,,oh, poor Keith if i actually pick the book up while im there.

This clip has probably been around for awhile, but it was just posted to www.youtube.com two days ago: It's a 1:20 min. clip of the Variety Awards Show in 2001 showing Alan & Lindsay Duncan receiving their awards for "Private Lives".

Oh, it's all over the web now!

LONDON - " Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the last of seven installments of the boy wizard's adventures, will be published July 21, author J.K. Rowling said Thursday.

Rowling announced the publication date on her Web site.

Bloomsbury, her British publisher, said it would publish a children's hardback edition, an adult hardback, a special gift edition and an audio book on the same day.

Scholastic Children's Books, the U.S. publisher, said it would offer a hardback edition at a suggested retail price of $34.99, a deluxe edition at $65.00 and a reinforced library edition at $39.99.

Bloomsbury noted that this year is the 10th anniversary of the publication of the first "Harry Potter" book in the phenomenally successful series.

The "Potter" books have sold 325 million copies worldwide and been translated into 64 languages, Bloomsbury said.

The last book, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," sold 2,009,574 copies in Britain on the first day of its release, Bloomsbury said.

The Potter franchise is so important to the company's earnings that it announced the publication to the London Stock Exchange.

Bloomsbury shares were up 2.2 percent to $4.40 after the announcement.

Other members of the cast of the phenomenally popular Harry Potter movie series have expressed their support for Radcliffe, and are said to be considering nude photo spreads as well. Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman who play professors Minerva McGonagle and Severus Snape will likely be the next to pose provided negotiations are concluded to their liking. Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley is rumored to be upset over Radcliffe and Watson's actions and said to be a holdout at this point.

 Wouldn't that be nice?

Eek!!  50 bucks for the Romeo & Juliet DVD on the Ambrose site.  So far, that seems to be the going rate on three different websites I've seen.  For those in the UK you can find it here at what seems to be a more reasonable price.  I'll keep searching...at one time, there was a gift shop in Ashland, OR (where they have a Shakespeare Festival) that sold the DVD for around 30 bucks as I remember....but I think they've gone out of business because I can't seem to fine a trace of their website or store anywhere.  Should have bought it then.....:kicking myself:

Hey kids,

I'm starting to get requests for the password for my site. The password is not for public use, it's just the only way I could "close the site" but still have it available to edit if I want to.

I need some time to think about what I want to do with it. Alot of stuff is happening right now with my business and other aspects of my life, so it's kinda hard to spend alot of time in "fandom". While I mull it over the site will be in a state of suspended animation-a holding pattern.

Also please bear in mind that I have had a very draining three months spending alot of time with my ailing grandmother who died just a few weeks ago. I need some time to surface again from this very emotional event, so I'm just asking that people be patient and please do not ask me for passwords, etc. My attention at the moment is quite.....elsewhere.

That said, I want to thank everyone for their wonderful support and good humor, I hope that I injected a laugh or two where things can tend to get too serious....you guys know how fandom can get sometimes. Too serious. WAY too serious.

So until we meet again good bye, good luck and good night.
