442Rick, that book sounds really interesting to me. I love the time and culture of the 1920s and of course I'd be happy to hear Alan read the instructions on how to program the VCR. I'd like to hear more about it!

Apparently, because of the threat from Getty, certain websites are now requesting a password.  Red Tango, if you're reading this, can I have the password to access your site, pretty please?    If you do not wish to publish it on a public board, can you e-mail it to me?  Thanks.

I wondered if anyone is interested in my downloading an audio book read by Our Boy, although someone may have already done so. (I searched the audio files and did not see it, although I did it very briefly, I should add). The book is "Blind Corner", and he recorded it in, perhaps, 1986. There is a very charming photo of him on the back of the cassette box. (he resembles my own father and one of my brothers, to my embarrassment...I suddenly realized there might be something buried deep within my psyche as to why I am so, er, interested in him. Hmmm. And both sides of my family are of English/Irish/Scots descent...but not just.)

Anyway, I've kept this cassette set out in case someone might like me to forward it, or the picture, along. (I may tell the library I lost it. I like to listen to AR read to me when I am driving. And the story is good, too, although rather 1920's class-conscious, GB-class conscious, that is). Also someone apprised me of the fact that the whole "Romeo and Juliet" video is available on Ebay, but I have yet to find it. Perhaps just searching for AR items isn't the way to look. (I get alerts when new stuff pops up, but that hasn't yet) . Gotta vamoose.

Happy Birthday "She Who Must Not Be Named"! You live every day with the best birthday present I can imagine!!

OMG, those photos at Leaky Cauldron... Those practically melted my monitor!! That one where he is leaning back against the horse and you get the bare chest and hip and a bit of hair....and you know he wasn't wearing a damn thing during that shoot. I don't remember 17 yr old boys looking like that when I was 17!!!

Hey, Dan is almost 18, so that's close

enough! Besides, if it were a girl up on

that stage, all of the men in the world

would have loads of comments.Right?

We have to give a round of applause

to Dan for being a true professional and

having the courage to disrobe on stage.

And being the handsome young man that he

is dosen't hurt either!

I have just checked the SOUTH BANK awards video from Sunday night and can safely say that the footage of Alan in the very beginning was from last years show. He is wearing the same clothes and sitting next to the same guy looking identical to pictures I saw last year.  So in all probability he didn't attend.

HEADLINE: Alan Rickman;
10 commandments

BODY:

Your favourite celebrities reveal the top 10 lessons they have learned from life. What's worked for them could work for you

Seize any opportunity that comes your way.

That's the way I've got on.

You are not the only one who sometimes says stupid things.

We all do from time to time, and, yes, we wish we could take them back.

So don't worry, you are not alone.

Don't forget your past.

We all like to look ahead, but we mustn't forget how the past has affected us.

I think of the past more and more.

Listen to your inner voice.

There is a voice inside of all us that tells us what we should do.

Don't dismiss it. Listen to it.

More often than not it is right.

Plan your life.

It's something I have never been able to do.

I just lurch from indecision to indecision.

            Not a good idea.

Take your work seriously.

I do mine and the best way to do that is not to take yourself too seriously!

It pays to keep some things about yourself private.

I don't think it is right that everybody knows everything about me.

Don't worry if you lose your nerve about something.

It's natural. I always get stage fright and gremlins in my head saying: 'You are going           to forget your lines'.

I think there is some connection between absolute discipline and absolute freedom.

Enjoy the simple things in life and you won't be happier.

Good friends, good food, good wine.

Love that last one!!!!

Sue - I watched the South Bank show last night, and they DID show Alan as the opening credits rolled, but that was all.  I think that, as in a Frasier episode, the winners & nominees were in one room and the other guests in a second room. If I'd won anything, they'd be searching for me in the second room!

Carolyn - thanks for that.  I might just go along.

I recorded The South Bank Awards last night  and have have just whizzed through it at x6/x12 and couldn't spot Rickman there. I have neither the time or the inclination to watch the thing properly so if anybody can say he was there for sure I'll save it for later. It could be that the scene somebody saw in the ad was from last year's show.

After reading the article by Antonia Quirke (author of the telegraph article yesterday), I googled her name and it seems she has a new book out on 5th Feb.  Alan has given a review:

http://www.foyles.co.uk/foyles/display.asp?K=9780007182756&sf_01=KEYWORD&st_01=antonia+quirke&m=2&dc=3

I think that as she seems to be a fellow fan of Alan's, and Alan likes the book, perhaps we should give it a go?

Boy, we've got a lot of reading to do this year, huh?  What with Susan's book out, too.

Hey Susan, do you think he'd give a review for your book?

DIE HARD on DVD, English and Spanish

DOGMA on DVD, English and German

GALAXY QUEST on video, English

LOVE ACTUALLY on video, English

If anyone is interested in obtaining either of these please send me an e-mail!

"Hi! If anyone is interested I just saw a clip of the South Bank Show Awards for British films, actors, actresses, etc, which is on tomorrow night, Sunday 28th January on ITV1 at 10.45pm - 12am. There was a shot of Daniel Radcliffe and shortly after a close-up of Alan Rickman sitting at a table, so he could be presenting or receiving an award. Hope you get a chance to see it and enjoy. Bye!

Comments:

I'm wondering whether we should be putting Getty image pix up here rather than just a link. A board I am on put up an article that said Getty, in particular, was getting very heavy with websites that used their photos.

I shall post the piece as was posted on our board:

Quote:
Warning - Getty Images fining users
Some of you work with web images, some from Getty Images. You'll need to be careful, as Getty Images is starting to crack down on unauthorized usage of their pictures and will fine those responsible about $2000 to $3000 per picture.

News and discussion from SitePoint about the matter.

It doesn't matter if your website is big or small, commercial or noncommercial. If you have a website that hosts images made with Getty Images pictures (such as a signature or an avatar), you may be held responsible for paying the fine, even if you didn't upload the picture yourself.

In the meantime, take advantage of other image sources such as Sxh.Hu or Creative Commons searches. Be careful though: if the image's photographer uploaded his pictures into multiple archives, and one of them happens to be Getty Images, you may be fined for that image even though you got it from a different source.

Please pass this on to other relevant people and communities. This would impact a lot of LJ and JF people, as well as people who make their own website designs or maintain fansites and rely on Getty Images for source material.

Can you pass this on to any forums websites that you have or may visit.

Thanks for the pix anyway

Just having my Friday catch-up! As someone who has trouble writing a shopping list I commend Susan for writing a novel!

From tonight's London Evening Standard, The Londoner's Diary:

Quote:
"Alan Rickman and John Hurt were guests at a charity gala to raise money for the Gate Theatre  at the 20th Century Theatre on Westbourne Grove. "It's difficult to build a theatre space," pointed out Rickman in his speech. "They are usually found or converted and have ghosts still clinging to their walls." There was a silent auction with lots including an evening at a press night with Sunday Times  theatre critic John Peter, four tickets to the  Sound of Music  and - curiously for this luvvie crowd - Champions League tickets to Manchester United vs Lille"

Vicky  can you email me so I can reply to your questions.

I am expecting a shipment of books from Canada, not sure how long they will be though, but when they arrive I will put them on Amazon and a buy now on eBay which may make it easier for some people to purchase. I will let you know.

It is not that easy to get a book into shops, you need to have sold many many copies before they will even consider it.

In answer to you question of How did I get a copy to Alan?

Well we had a little tete a tete at the Hampstead Snowcake screening back in September and I gave it to him them and told him about it.  You should have seen his eyes light up when he knew that I had written a part in it for him!

Congratulations, Susan! Your book looks very good.

For anyone interested, here's a link to a transcript (in English) of the Nobel Son trailer and the individual character clips:

http://mysite.verizon.net/ressuzc9/ardentrickmanadmiration/id12.html

I got the character names from IMDb. Until rewatching it just now, I didn't realize the two scrungy characters in the truck - one about to swollow the thumb  - were Barkley and Thaddeus, the two sons.

While searching YouTube this morning, I came across this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WME495PWWJE    It's a song written by Billy Bragg about the life and death of Rachel Corrie.    I wonder if Alan had any influence in encouraging Billy to undertake this project at all.

I remember Billy (much like Alan) was a fierce supporter of Old Labour and recall him speaking out on numerous occasions in support of it's left wing policies.     Not only through Rima, I know Alan has a lot of connections with the Old Labour (as opposed to New Labour) governments and didn't he appear in their Party Political Broadcast at one point?

I just think this little gem of a song is rather 'cool'.  I've always been a fan of Billy's and to discover there might be a link between him and Alan would make me love him just that bit more.

Hello! *waves*

I'm usually an occasional lurker around here (did that make sense? lol) but I just had to comment today, having read Susan's post about her book. Out of sheer curiosity I  went to the publisher's website and read an excerpt from the book. All I can say is, I really want to read the rest now!

If something I know virtually nothing about can get my attention and keep me interested in only about 2 pages, I think it's probably worth reading. I'm off to go order it! Congrats on your writing debut, Susan. I really hope we'll see the film-version of it, with Alan in it of course!

OMG!  Thank you so much everyone for your good wishes and congratulations.  I was totally gobsmacked at the response from all you lovely ladies, it makes the effort I put into this book all worthwhile.  The trails and tribulations I went through in the process of getting the book ready for publication, and the even greater hurdles that had to be overcome once they accepted my book for film adaptation.  Believe me it is not an easy ride, especially dealing with the a film critic whose job it was to tear the book apart and find every possible flaw that wouldn't adapt to film well. I know VICKY has already asked me to go into greater detail regarding the whole process and I will answer her soon.  If anyone else is interested in writing a novel and what it entails,  please e-mail me and I will give you a blow by blow account!

What a great accomplishment, dear friend!

I can only second Marlene's opionion: Susan's Novel

"Thornton Manor" IS a PAGE TURNER! I had the honour, too, to be one of her proofreaders! I did enjoy each chapter very, very much. Ladies, I can only recommend to order a copy right away: it is a very interesting story to read! You will not be disappointed! What you can look forward to? Romance, love, lies, deception, betrayel, murder..... a very vividly written novel that you don't want to put down until you finish reading it!

While Susan was creating the story and writing word-by-word, I was one of her guinea pigs... er... um... I mean - proofreaders - and got a copy of the chapters as they flowed out of her pen.

No sooner did I finish the last word in the chapter, than I was bugging her for MORE!!    I felt a bit like Oliver Twist ...  paraphrased : " Please Susan, Can I have some more??  NOW!!!!! "

FABULOUS, simply FABULOUS!!

Here’s a little surprise for everyone!   I have been busy this past year writing a romantic novel, never done it before, but always wanted to.  I sent it up to a publisher after being persuaded to by some friends and ardent DH members.  Alan Rickman is portrayed as one of the characters in the book. Not only did it get accepted for publication, but the American Screenplay Agency snapped it up for possible book to film adaptation and placed it on their database!

Alan has a copy of the book and has asked me to send him a Screenplay of it.  Having never done one before, I enlisted the help of Angela Pell (Snowcake writer) and a book called (Screenplay writing for dummies) I have started to write it now, learning as I go.  All we need now is to persuade Alan to play the part!!

If anyone is interested in obtaining a copy it can be purchased through www.trafford.com  just type in THORNTON MANOR in the search box.   Warning:  Chapter sixteen contains descriptions of an explicit sexual nature…he shouldn’t find it difficult to do after Nobel son!

Apparently the Viggo Mortensen fans and the Sean Bean fans worked together (in a remembrance of the Fellowship which doesn't seem to extend to the Elf).  The other Harry Potter fans never seemed very interested in voting for AR, although the SB/AR contest had by far the highest vote totals of the year.

I am sure this has been addressed already since this is dated in 2005, but I have to ask.  Does anyone know what happened to AR playing in Zodiac or is this a misprint of somesorts.  I got this information off the Yahoo Biography page.

Rickman again revived his role as the mysterious Professor Snape for the series’ fourth installment, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” (2005), the first to be helmed by a British director (Mike Newell). Then in late 2005, he began shooting “Zodiac,” a psychological thriller about the famed Zodiac killer who terrorized San Francisco from 1966-1978.

Hey there:

Wonky teeth? I did not notice it, lol.

Jessica, there are rumors like this not only in England and that makes me say: WTF? Alan is a celebrity, he cannot help doing without gossips but this one is a little bit foolish, cuz Alan does seem to be straight.

Carolyn, lol, this article is very hilarious, but it seems to be very odd though.

Ah, tomorrow is my Birthday, so I've got to be prepared for it.

Good luck!

Ok, so, I really don't like to "wonder" things, but after THIS some girls on my website went nuts.

There was this girl, Marília, who was in the pool with her friend, who finished high school in England. My friend, Marília, asked some help on English, so she could send a letter to England, and said it was to Alan Rickman. Her friend said "Oh! The Gay actor who plays the nasty Potter teacher?"

At this point she went nuts. Her friend said there was a "rumor" in England, that because of his often theater things and his "way", you know, of talking, seating and all, very delicate and he went to places without taking Rima with him he was gay.

Does anybody from England has ever heard this rumor?

So, I saw "Snow cake" yesterday and I loved it so much !!!! It was so funny and really moving. All the people in the cinema laughed a lot too and applaused twice at the end
Sigourney came at the beginning and talked about Wawa and the people who helped her for Linda's character, she talked French all the time

They aren't on my guestbook and I notice no pics here after Jan 4 are links either (though I don't know how they were posted). To make this a link I had to copy the thumbnail, then select it and use the link tool and insert the URL there.

Just a little bit more info on "Snow Cake":

Another site is also saying that the new release date (postponed from December 25) is now April 25, 2007. The official line, however, from Fortissimo Films is that they are currently still firming up the deal.

The video distribution will be handled by TWC (Weinstein Co).

Hm...religion...It's not that simple, and moreover it doesn't even matter what we believe in, the most important is to have a real faith or to disclaim, it depends. As for me, I don't speak much about it, I want it to be only my own faith, probably Alan doesn't want to show his either. He keeps it private as well as private life, cuz it touches one's heart. IMHO

Btw today dad comes from work and says: "Of course you'd watched Alan Rickman interview and just a review about Snow Cake yesterday night?" I screamed slightly and said: "No, I might have missed it". So, it was too late and I was sleeping already, but dad says there were quite much scenes from Snow Cake, they spoke even about snow,  and the most significant that it's going to be released in our cinemas since the 18th of January! I hope I shall watch it.

Good luck

No, it doens't make a tiny difference whether he's budist, protestant or Jew. (at least in my opinion). It's just that in 3 years I never heard him mentioning anything about religion although he's done 2 religious characters in Dogma and Rasputin.

And in my country there are SO MANY beliefs and several religions that we get used to live with all of them.

Particularly, I love knowing about different cultures.

He was asked about his band, Poor White Trash, and he replied, "We usually do wrap parties for movies or TV shows or friends' or colleagues' birthday parties. The most hi-profile gig was our first one, the 'Sense & Sensibility' wrap party. The site of Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, and Emma Thompson shaking their booties to the funk was a sight to behold! Alan Rickman cuts a mean rug, too!"

I think we're all familiar w/ the following photo from NOW magazine in 1992 taken by Rick Mcginnis:

PicbyRickMcGinnisNowMag.jpg

Mr. McGinnis was asked how he prefers to approach his photo subjects in general in an interview. He said, "Alan Rickman was such an arch, gothic persona, very _itchy and wry, that I just went with the mood he was giving off. I usually try to find a neutral corner in hotel rooms, but I went with the antique furnishings as a backdrop instead, to give him a bit of a decadent setting.(http://www.circleofconfusion.ca/20050401/rmcginnis/)

On his own site, Mr. McGinnis said, "He (AR) was chatty and sarcastic, far from the hushed, suffering persona he often plays."

I've got to heavily second the Marques work. She is amazing. It is exactly how I picture Snape. A young, thin, sharper more angular and hard lined AR.

I finally got to see Perfume last night. I just have a few thoughts on it. I'd say there are spoilers here, but honestly, I'm not going to say a lot of about many of the movie specifics, just my feels of the entire production.

I liked it, basically. It was very lush and sensual. But it was indeed odd. It was pretty gross, especially in the beginning. However, 18th century Paris was one dirty, filthy place! And I'm not a baby person. But seeing that itty, tiny baby laying in the filth, even I was like "Awwh, clean it up, I'll take it!"

One thing that I missed was I felt very little empathy for most of the people in the story (except Alan's character and his daughter). The main guy (I cannot begin to spell French names) I felt maybe a smidge of pity for. But he was basically a sociopath. Therefore he felt no remorse for his killings and had no capacity to love, so he had no need of anyone's sympathy.

Alan was a bright spot in the movie. And the girl who played his daughter is just breathtakingly gorgeous. I did not get any sexual vibes from their scenes. To me, Alan is just always very sensuous in every move he makes. I think doing very average things he always looks sexy. So of course put him in a bedroom and showing (even platonic) affection to someone and it still seems a bit erotic.

People in the theater giggled during the orgy scene, but so did I! I didn't expect it to be as silly as it was. I mean everyone just is overcome and falls all over each other. That part was probably the low point of the movie.

And so we know that everyone during that period of time stunk to high heaven. So I don't know how perfume made out of even very beautiful women's "essence" could be that intoxicating. But I found the concept interesting.

So a well done movie, very well acted, but odd indeed. Boyfriend didn't like it at all. He found it disturbing.

Cats, don't feel bad! When this Q&A was originally announced (either the end of Dec. or beginning of Jan), the only speakers were supposed to be either Angela Pell or Ros Blackburn! The addition of ME & Alan is new!

On another note....I'm posting this drawing here because I just cannot get enough of it! With my "pimping" hat firmly on my head, it was drawn by one of the most talented artists in fandom known as "The Divine Marques". Some of you who are interested in fanfics and fanart are surely aware of her. She's been gone from the fandom for awhile and has only just returned and return she did! Her interpretation of Severus has so much of Alan in it, but yet it's not overt.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Her lj is:

But according to the old Jewish tradition he got the some religion as his mother, and all I read about her is that she was a Methodist.

Not to change the current topic but in my stumblings around the internet (bored @ work) I found Alan's name on jewwatch.com.  Being that I've been to a lot, and I do mean A LOT of Alan Rickman sites and I've never heard that he's Jewish before I thought I'd ask here. Has anyone else heard that? Is he?

And to the current topic, I think Nobel Son looks interesting. Yeah, I am not one for fart jokes and teenage boy humor but the rest of what I saw makes up for it. I love the scene where his wife has the gun pointed at the people in the yard and tells them to get the 'F' off it. Alan's face was priceless during it.

It does seem like a new type of character for him. Though he has played egotistical before. Sheriff of Notingham anyone?

I too have seen the movie and agree that Alan was at his best, although i wish they would of had a close up of him on the horse riding full tilt ( i like that stuff ). I just did not like the book and have a hard time liking the adaptation of the book to big screen. I will watch it over and over again for Alan, and maybe it will be like DH and JK, i will like it after about 3 or 4 watches.....

Noble Son, Keith laughed himself silly at the trailer and then said, " is there any role Alan cant do, he is so talanted".. I said,  yah, the man can fart on cue too.....then Keith said, " well thats no accomplishment, any man can do that". I love him so...

I am sure Nobel Son will be a fantastic film - I love the trailor with Alan smoking, drinking, swearing, eating chocolate (wow, that's really the worst thing he has ever done in a film) and mos def f****** like a bunny.

I remember Alan doing an interview once and he said he " had great fun making this movie" ,you know i dont think he can say that about all of his movies. From the trailer, i can see why he had fun. I mean, Danny DeVito, Ted Danson, Bill Pullman, these guys are funny people ( no Tim Allan, Sam Rockwell and Tony Chalub ) but a good group of people.

As for the NS trailer....it looks very funny, but as experience shows, a trailer is no indication whatsoever of how good the film may be.  Oftentimes, the trailer contains all the best scenes and the film ends up being a let down.  I do enjoy dark comedies however if they are done right.  Some of my guilty pleasures are: Death Becomes Her and Drop Dead Gorgeous.  I can forgive the crude and outrageous humor if they are satirizing a commonly accepted behavior or revered institution in a clever way (like the quest for eternal youth or beauty pageants).  But I agree 100% with SnoKat about the so-called comedies that seem to saturate the theaters these day that are nothing more than potty humor.  Are there no original ideas out there that we must resort to fart and booger jokes?  I'm so tired of Hollywood's target audience being aimed at the level of a third grade boy.  I should stop complaining, get off my ass and write my own script. Let's just say that Nobel Son has tremendous potential....let's hope they got it right.

****Possible Spoiler****

Last night I went out and saw Perfume, the story of a Murderer.  What can I say.....hmmmm.....well, I really liked the bits with Alan in it.  The cinematography was beautiful, the acting superb.....but the story was just too bizarre!!!  I just don't see this one as becoming a mainstream movie.  And wtf happened at the end??  I'm pretty sure I know...but I just can't believe it would end so, so.....I'm at a loss for words.  As you can see I've avoided reading anyone else's account of the film so I had no idea what to expect.  Well, I will probably buy the DVD for my collection as I thought Alan's performance was, as usual, excellent.  But it won't be on my hit parade list.***End***

I think Alan and many many many other actors have made a bad movie or two in thier lives, its all opinion in which ones they are. Me personally i did not like AABA, DH or JK,,,,,,,,,,,but then when i watched both DH again with the commentary it became a whole new movie and i actually enjoyed it much more and again i watched JK over a couple times and i started to enjoy that one ( specially the character of Reuben ( his one liners are halarious, like the one about Arol FLynn being a homo). The more i watched it the more i enjoyed it, even Alans questionable New Orleans accent. Him and Emma i always enjoy. I will watch, i will buy any DVD with Alan in it, i have his whole collection and am proudly going to add three more to them this year. Perfume ( yuk ), Snow Cake and Noble Son and i cant wait.

Hey, Ya'll,

My Windows Media Player program refuses to open any of the varieties of the "Nobel Son" trailer. I downloaded the Flash Player, but put in in a different file from the downloads. Should I download it again into the same file as my other AR downloads? I am not computer savvy at all!  I did like the trailer, by the way! It does remind me of " Snatch ", which was not for everyone! I hope it is released everywhere!

I guess I'm in the minority here but I think the movie Nobel Son looks like a wonderful dark comedy. But I, of course, would go see Alan clip his toenails!! But even if this movie didn't have him in it, I think it would be worth while. I don't mind this kind of clever crudeness. What I don't like is crude slapstick. Something About Mary and Austin Powers, that kind of stuff doesn't interest me. But this film seems much more edgy and well crafted. Yes, I'd even be okay with seeing Alan fart. (Actually, I wouldn't even kick him out of bed for it... the first time.) I have a feeling this kind of less polished but equally dastardly character probably greatly appealed to Alan. It is something very different from his other roles but it really looks like it suits him. I'm VERY excited to see this!

Well, we all agree there are SEVERAL Alan films we just watch because of him (and as a cinema lover, i enjoy all film features, only an acting, the music, the editing, the story, the cinematography...) so I don't care if I watch a bad film of him, as I have his acting.

But I say, AABA, Dark Harbor, and Judas Kiss are TOO crap in my opinion and I kind of "pardon him" for accepting the role for 2 things: he's ALWAYS brilliant on his acting and he said once he accepted all chances he had to act.

Aaaand, Alan and Emma scenes in JK just kill me.

"Alan

Anna, Shan *waves*: So I am not the only one who wasn't excited about the trailer... - on the contrary.

When I read about the movie some months ago, the story seemed to be really interesting and I was really, really looking forward to it. Besides because it offered a big role for Alan...
However, when I discovered the trailer yesterday I was somehow shocked about the style and the sense of humour and everything. I didn't like it, I didn't like it at all. *beingdisappointed*

No movie for me, I guess. :-(
Unless, you all tell me after watching it in the cinema that the trailer didn't catch the movie right. ;-)

I dont know about this movie but then again i think im the only one who absolutly hated Perfume ( the book) and its going to take alote for me to watch it in the theater. Might just have to be a buy DVD, watch once and not h to often  following( like AABA  in my opinion). But again, i will reserve judgment utnil i see it, it looks like it could be funny, but maybe a bomb in the making too. I did notice a few things on the trailer though, he swears,  he drinks, he smokes, he eats chocolate and he f---s like a bunny....i did giggle at a few scenes though.  Dont know yet, my verdict is not out.......but a movie with lots of Alan screen time, and lots of Alan in his own accent cant be to terrible, can it???????????????.

Well, I do have to say, that movie trailer notwithstanding, this isn't going to be a movie for everyone. Paul Oakenfield likened it to "Pulp Fiction" meets "Snatch" (the 2000 heist movie directed by Guy Ritchie, Madonna's husband). They're going for more of an "MTV demographic" with this movie; more of an "electronica" type of music instead of your more traditional soundtrack music.

That trailer for " Nobel Son" was really fun! I'm getting the word out to my friends.  Did everyone go to "alanrickmangallery.com" to see Red Tango's birthday tribute to Snape? It was great! I sent it on to lots of friends, then had to warn one of them with young kids, about the end scene with Snape and the two Barbies!  That would be a bit hard to explain to grade-schoolers!

It was nice to see poor old Snape " get lucky" on his birthday!

( Personally I think it would be likely to give him a heart attack!)

Great link. All those of you who managed to see the trailer will find the flv-file (about 17 MB) in the folder for temporary internet files. All you need then is a flash player.

I found the trailer but the screen keeps jumping so I don't really see it that well.  Sorta like it is on FF.  I will patiently (not) wait for Cats to post screen caps. Thanks in advance CatsPlay!  I am sure I will be too busy picking myself up off the floor to say that once I see this.  I can't wait!

I can't save the videos - they are flash - I don't have a flash save program.

I was so absolutely enchanted to discover that so many women (and many men, too, I am sure, as the gay question was bandied about so much by people who hadn't "done the research") were as fascinated by the man as I was. For several years (2002-2004) I was literally unaware that the same actor I had had little crushes on in 1989-1993 was the same man we saw in the HP series. Peculiarly, it was after my own parents died within a year or so of eachother--well, I was about to digress into a whole other issue--but I felt desperately isolated, even with a 4-year-old (at the time) daughter and a fiance, that I learned that this guy was one-and-the-same as the guy in "Truly, M,D" and "D.H.", and then the fascination became acute, chronic and obsessive, to the point of EXTREME irritation on the part of my fiance. I've calmed down a little since. But I think seeing the interviews on this website have made me realize what the attraction (besides voice and body and acting ability) is, and that is namely that he really seems unsure and seems--esp in the early 90's interviews--to be wanting to be held and comforted, and who doesn't want that? I can only guess at how he felt after his mother died. It has taken its toll on him visibly, physically. OK, I made too many comments, but let me just say this: I was so excited seeing that someone actually had clips from the BBC "Romeo and Juliet" and also the interviews--the goofy Japanese one was particularly nice (now what led her to comment on his hands, ya think? I always thought he had, for such a tall man, rather delicate hands and feet, but then, I've never seen either personally so...?) Anyway, GREAT MARVELLOUS FANTASTIQUE WUNDERBARLICH website.

Barbara, Region 1 and 2 relate to dvds not to videos. Dvds issued in America are Region 1 and in Europe they are Region 2. The rest of the world is split in to other regions too but I'm not sure of them. Originally dvd players in America only played Region 1 dvds and European dvd players only played Region 2 etc etc. That meant you couldn't import a dvd from another country and play it on your player. Now, however, many dvd players are called "multi-region" and you can play any region dvd on them. Also you can fiddle with some old dvd players and change the settings so that you can play any dvd on them.

Doubtless there will something new again in a few years and we'll all have shell out again!

Hi All,

What is region 1 and region 2 mean? I see that on some of the tapes to order? Does that have something to do with the language spoken? I know one tape I was thinking of ordering warned that people in the states or Canada could not play it because you needed a certain machine to play that tape. Of course we have DVDs now.

As far as the movie being a musical...who cares???? It's the face, body, the voice, the  Pants...as mentioned a few days ago....  *cough* we want to experience. Would love to see him anyway! Can't wait. Nothing is out here in the sticks. It is sad, but will wait for them to come out on DVD. *sigh*

Just my two cents worth: Sweeney Todd is probably one of the more difficult Sondheim musicals to sing (not that the others aren't! ) and it is the most operatic, loosely based on the style of some classical composer Sondheim likes. From what I've read, HBC & JD have been taking vocal lessons since as least October and the studio recording sessions were supposed to start in Dec.'06. I thought I also read somewhere that Alan was taking some lessons as well, but I could be wrong.

Puddingdale

Comments:

I am afraid Cohen will rap his parts - at least some report had it. His song is quite staccato anyway, but still it is not right in my opinion. Sweeney Todd is not simply a mainstream musical you should mess with, it is very unusual and well composed in my opinion. It is not one of those that leave you humming tunes afterwards. Many even claim it is rather an opera than a musical.

Alan's part of the judge is not easy to sing either. Very emotional and not "hummable" at all. But he will probably manage as it is his voice range. I am extremely curious about that movie, but I can understand that fans of the musical are skeptical because famous faces rather than singers were casted. Especially Depp is frowned upon as in the case of other movies he did not want to sing anything.

Well, I guess we can rely on AR that he will do his best and have his voice trained for all that.  I am sure he will not settle for crap.

Chalebh, yes it is going to be a musical. Directed by Tim Burton and music by Stephen Soundheim. I read somwhere that they had thier music checks. So that means that both Johnny Depp and Alan will be singing thier parts. I remember in the interview he did in early Dec when he let it out that he and Johnny were going to sing a duet together he said " well, lets see if either of us can sing". SInce the report said that only Sacha Cohen cant sing his parts ( lets hope he doesnt rap them, eww) i take it that Alan and Johnny and Helena all passed and will be singing thier own parts. I have a couple songs from the broadway production and the Judge has a very deep voice and rather like Alan's. Ah, like he said, they can tune and tweak anything to make it sound good.

Does anybody know if the film is really going to be a musical or does Tim Burton only plunder the story line?

Sorry girls, but someone really interested to pay a little fortune for Craig's photo of Alan? I don't think it's worth all the trouble. Easier to mail Alan or Melanie and ask for a special treat.

But if someone is willing to get the photo for personal usage, please email me and I will forward your order to Jillian Goddard for dispatchment.

Sweet success

times.series@archant.co.uk
09 January 2007

The sweet smell of success wafted round the Tricycle in Kilburn High Road again as film star Alan Rickman held a Q&A for his new movie Perfume.

Following the triumph of previous special screenings with Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys) and Emma Thompson (Stranger Than Fiction) a sell-out audience heard the Harry Potter star answer questions about the 'unfilmable' novel of the same name.

Raising more than £2,000 for the Tricycle Education Programme, the evening was a great success and will allow the Tricycle to continue its exciting education work with schools and young people across the borough.

From Empireonline:

Quote:

Alan's Musical
When he’s not creeping around Hogwarts with his special potions and dour expression, Alan Rickman has been exercising his vocal cords in preparation for his role in Dreamworks/Warner Bros’ Sweeney Todd. The British actor will play the role of a lecherous judge – very Mr. Rickman. The film goes into production later this month and will be directed by Tim Burton. Johnny Depp, Sacha Baron Cohen and – shock horror – Helena Bonham Carter will all star in this tale of the murderous, yet tuneful, London barber.

Sue,

I had to laugh at the "petite" remark by that writer!! If AR is petite then I must be " Ultra-Petite!". I agree the man meant AR was slimmer, but petite refers to height and bone size not weight. My oldest son age 31 was 6'3" by age 17!! He was a skinny as a rail and looked like we didn't feed him, but I assure you we did. The early photos of AR, especially the famous "shirtless on stage" one, reminds me of that. Poor thing may have been too poor to have three meals a day!  Thankfully they've both filled out and those big bones have some meat on them, plus maybe a little pudge!  I wouldn't have it any other way!

I think by petite, they must mean THIN. I was watching Barchester Chronicals last night (I do ADORE Obediah)and Alan is VERY slender. But that was like 1982! He was probably one of this tall, skinny kids. But as we age, we fill out more. (damn) Luckily he has filled out perfectly.

Wonderful AR reports still keep rolling in!  Thank you all for sharing your different experiences.

Maryland - I know what you mean about the costumes.  Early last year, Alfan and I visited the Warner Brothers museum and saw the Harry Potter exhibit that included some costumes.  We were both stunned at how beautiful and detailed the costume was for Lucius Malfoy.  Beautiful velvet, embroidery, and fur that just doesn't come across on the screen at all.  I would have loved to have taken a picture or reached out and touched the fabric but that was strictly forbidden.  There were docents all over the place watching every move.  But it was a treat to be able to see it in person.  BTW, I've been meaning to tell you (OT) that I tried your "lovely cakes" recipe over the holidays and it was fabulous!!  AR christened it with the perfect name.

I'm planning to go back to London this spring -- this time with hubby! -- and want to see some of the UK coastline too. Is anyone willing to share some great (non-tourist) coastal places to visit? Please feel free to drop me an email!

And keep up the great posts! I can't visit very often, but Claudia has the BEST place on the net!

Thanks Maryland, sounds fascinating!

Interesting how detailed the costumes were. Quite different when I went to see an exhibition of costumes from BBC's Henry VIII (the Keith Michel one) many, many ago at Hampton Court Palace. I was amazed to see how they had cheated by literally spraying dye through doilies to get a lace on velvet effect. Mind you that was for TV so we would never have noticed back then!

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to say I saw the "Fashion In Film" exhibit at Winterthur Estate  in Delaware yesterday.  I am so glad I went along with my old friend, Kathy, who is herself an actress and a huge AR fan. All of the costumes were a treat to see.  I only wish I could have taken photos, but that was not allowed.  As another person reported, the first thing you see are Colonel Brandon and Marianne Dashwood's wedding clothes. They are absolutely stunning and the red tunic of the uniform is a real eye-catcher!  I must confess that in spite of the online description of " red jacket with green cuffs etc." I was not expecting the amount of green, really green! areas on the tunic! I never detected it before in the many times I've seen it in the movie or screencaps. Marianne's gown was delicious! It amazed me how much detail was put into embroidery on her gown and in fact on all the other beautiful clothes, that are barely registered on film. It seem a real shame! I guess that's what High-def is all about!  The overall impression given by Brandon's costume from my vantage point was how very tall and trim it looked. That was the very same thing I thought when I met AR in New York. He's much taller than you expect. The "trimness" depends of course on wether the "Pudge" is waxing or waning! In "Sense and Sensibility" it was a pre-pudge" era to be sure! But hey, I for one could care less!

The trip to Winterthur took us six hours thanks to a lousey map downloaded from the internet. I don't know where the exhibit goes after today. Oh yes, the exhibit was MOBBED by women! I heard a guard say, " They're still coming!!". My immediate thought was, "Never underestimate the drawing power of Col. Brandon's pants!", to paraphrase a line from "Dogma"!!

Now I must watch S & S again to look for the green trim!!

Sue, I'm not sure about the actors/extras stuff; my notes say "actors".

Is your friend this lady with blond hair and dark glasses? I originally had her in the picture but cut her out because I don't wanted to post pictures of people without their permission. I only used the picture with the two little girls because it's so cute.

If you want to have the original photo with your friend in it, please email me and I will send it to you.

I have two other photos with people in it:

- one with a girl wearing a dark top and dark vest and a little golden cross around her neck

- one with a woman with red hair wearing a black leather jacket; she also holds a book in her hands.

If these people read this guest-book here and want me to send them the pictures, please email me as well.

Bettina, thanks so much for the new link. You remembered lots of stuff I didn't (which isn't difficult with my memory!)

One thing that did come back to me was that he did appear a little disappointed about the scene in the Square being cut. He described walking right through the Square picking his way through the bodies, sword in hand to go and face Grenouille but on screen he said it just appears he walked out and up three steps!

The only thing that I remember differently to you was that he said "Thank God they weren't English extras in that scene" rather than "actors", which is, I think, an important difference.

Thanks for the photos too. I think that's my friends hands having her book signed!!LOL

Yes, Bettina, I think the change of your wording is just fine.

I am sorry to have interfered here a bit, but I have been involved in "The Perfume..." for quite some time - partly at the University (some might remember), partly by Tom Tykwer himself, his camera man and "dirt manager" plus Jessica Schwarz  and all their 3-hour-long utterances life in front of us, partly by extensive reading - among others the Ben W interview where he states that he was happy to "retreat mentally" when the crew talked German

For teachers of French, German, Chemistry, Biology, Religion and for those who think the many "nose close-ups" are a bit overdone, there is a great brochure (pdf-file- for teaching purposes) offering the reasons for this approach among other interesting stuff.

Bettina - thanks so much for that report because I can now read what Alan answered to my question!  I was the one who asked where he drew from when he had an emotional scene to play, but the realisation that for one tiny moment in his life he had acknowledged my existence, overwhelmed me and I only got the basic bones of his answer.   Hubby went over it with me, but missed some bits you have supplied.  Thanks.

I don't know if this will help clear up some of the discrepancies re: the Perfume filming but:

In an interview with Sheila Roberts (www.moviesonline.ca) Tom Tykwer said the the orgy scene required four weeks of rehearsals and ",,,we shot for more than a week."

In another interview w/Ben Whishaw (www.moviesonline.ca) Ben said, "It took us seven days to shoot the scene and we have 24 hours of footage."

In an interview for Londonnet.co.uk/in/out/ent/cinema, TT was asked about the language differences with a diverse crew, and he replied, "The set language was in English".

According to an interview w/Rob Carnevale (www.bbc.co.uk), Ben W. said that he and Dustin Hoffman shot their scenes together during the first two weeks of filming at Bavaria Studios in Munich. (That's confirmed by Film Entertainment Magazine's production notes for the movie: "Hoffman & Whishaw had a week of rehearsal and a crash course in the art of perfume-making prior to their two-week shoot at Bavaria Studios in Munich."

Also, according to FEM, there was a pre-production shoot that began w/ a three day trip to Provence while the lavendar was in full bloom.

But I can't really change things he said. As he is not the director of the film but only one of the actors in it, he can get things wrong, and I don't think that's such a big problem.

That's exactly, what I think as well.

When you ask two people about the same event - in this case AR and Ben Whishaw or Tom Tykwer - you always get slightly different answers. Obviously, AR was the only source at that Q&A.

Personally I'm still very happy to have got the opportunity to read such a lovely and detailed report that included a lot of things that were discussed.

Hikity, is there something else that isn't right about the movie? I changed the two things you pointed out as followed:

"Alan thinks almost all of the movie (with the exception of the Lavender fields) was shot in Spain."

"It took seven days to prepare and shoot the mass crowd scene..."

But I can't really change things he said. As he is not the director of the film but only one of the actors in it, he can get things wrong, and I don't think that's such a big problem.

And TT never said that they needed 7 days to shoot the market scene - on the contrary - he told us how great the extras were and that they couldn't possible repeat this kind of scene several times - therefore it was very quickly done...

Hikity, I'm only repeating what Alan Rickman said about the movie. As he wasn't in the apothecary scenes he probably doesn't know that. He also told us that he met Dustin Hoffman only at the Munich premiere and not on the film set because they didn't have any scenes together.

Here it is, sue, without pics:

Another charity movie screening with Alan Rickman at the Tricycle Theatre? After we have been to two of these screenings in the past, it has become a tradition. So when our London Theatre Club (LTRC) sent us the invitation to a charity screening of the PERFUME we decided to attend the event. I won't talk about the film itself - most people who visit this site will already have seen it. But I will try to give a little account of the Q&A with Alan Rickman that took place after the screening. Alan Rickman is an admirer of Tom Tykwer's work since he has seen "Run, Lola, Run" and was glad to be part of the PERFUME cast. Tykwer, as director, is wonderful to work with. He lets actors interact and lets them create their own dynamics. The Paris stuff was shot in Barcelona; almost all of the movie (with the exception of the Lavender fields) was shot in Spain. Alan loved working there. When he was asked by a Spanish girl in the audience to describe Spain in one word, his answer was. "Thrilling!" Asked if this film is different from Hollywood movies he definitely confirms. It's all about the story, an amazing disposition, very different from Hollywood blockbuster movies. Alan is drawn to things with an unnameable quality and thinks that we live in a world with too much labels. It took seven days to shoot the mass crowd scene set in Grasse towards the end of the film. Alan Rickman was glad that Tykwer used real actors and dancers (an amazing group from Barcelona) as the core group, surrounded by extras, for the scene. Tykwer insisted that not only young and beautiful people were used, but all kind of real life people. Alan joked: "Thank God, they weren't English actors doing that scene." To approach Grenouille in the scene Alan had to walk through the naked bodies and had to be very careful where to put his feet. Asked if Ben Whishaw was the first choice for the role of Grenouille, Alan Rickman replies that Tykwer was looking at a few people but when he found Ben, he was definitely Grenouille for him. Ben hadn't big name recognition but he had trained at RADA and was well known in England for having played "Hamlet". Alan explains that an actor hopes for this kind of courage from an director to give him a chance with such a leading role. He felt the same thing when he was starting his acting career and is always thankful for that. He saw Ben at RADA in Schiller's "Robbers" and thinks that Ben is miraculous in PERFUME, given the fact that he only has few lines and has to use his facial expression to show every one of Grenouille's emotions. Someone wants to know were Alan draws from when he has to play an emotional scene in a film, as for example the scene where he discovers that his daughter was murdered. He explains that the characters have little subtext to draw from in the PERFUME. That's the nature of the story, and all we know is that there is a dad who cares deeply about his daughter. That's what he had to work with. In this scene he tries "not to know" that his daughter is dead when he enters the room, in order to show real emotions. It's not easy, especially after several takes when the routine sets in. Handling long filming days, he says, is part of the job. You have to look after your health, your sleeping and eating habits. He is not one of these actors who can come to the set and "switch on" the role as soon as the camera is rolling. He has to take his time to "get going" in his role. For him to be comfortable in a role everything must be in harmony: the body, the mind... One of his great heroes is Fred Astaire. With him you feel that the "whole unit" is functioning; he behaves instinctively. An 18 year old guy asks a question about movie categories for kids, teenagers, adults. For the young man it was the first time he saw a film of this genre and he was a bit surprised how much he liked it (normally he watches movies like Star Wars, Harry Potter etc.). Alan loves the fact that kids and adults enjoy films like Harry Potter or Dogma. He thinks movies shouldn't be so categorized. He jokes about Hollywood: "It's the Holy Trinity: movie, popcorn, Coca Cola. And the questions is: which is the most important?" Concerning the PERFUME Alan Rickman thinks that the professionalism and internationalism of the crew was amazing. A German crew, Spanish location and English speaking actors. And the whole crew spoke English all the time, even the Germans to each other. He has read the novel PERFUME by Patrick Suskind and thinks that the film is faithful to the book, that the film and the movie have a real relationship with each other. Was he disappointed that some of his scenes were deleted? Not really; he understands that it's sometimes necessary. There was a scene cut before the dance scene, where he searches for his daughter: He enters his house and sees that his daughter is gone, then he goes looking for her. This scene would have better shown his obsessiveness. Grabbing his daughter at the dance would have been more logical in that context for the viewers. At the question if he would like to direct, he answers that he already did it: the film "The Winter Guest" with Emma Thompson and her mother, and recently the play "My name is Rachel Corrie". He reflects on directing. A director needs a support system, which means a professional crew that knows how to work. Film is too expensive, important and time-constricted to deal with incompetent people (unfortunately it's often different in theatre). When he came to the set of "The Winter Guest" it was a relief for him that the people knew exactly what they were doing and he could concentrate on listening to the actors. He talks about how he became an actor and why he went first to Art school. When he was young he listened to what other people said (something he doesn't do anymore today), and acting wasn't seen as a serious career by the people surrounding him (especially his school). He had the choice between Art school and university and opted for Graphic Design, something he liked besides acting. But later he realized that acting was more important for him and he went to Drama school. When asked if he thinks about retirement, he jokes: " Is that a wish of yours?" Then: "There must be some wheel-chair roles available." Another funny episode: A 15 year old girl asks if Alan likes to work with kids. He likes it a lot. He still feels somewhat connected with these young people, as if he had never aged. He jokes that when he looks at this girl, he sees himself and still feels that age. But then he looks in the mirror and it tells him otherwise. He is asked if he was looking for a "good guy" role in PERFUME because he so often plays the "bad guys". He seems a bit offended by this presumption and corrects that he had only played a villain twice, but that these Hollywood movies unfortunately seem to leave a bigger impression. © Bettina B. 06/01/2007

Hello ,

My husband and I saw "Perfume" earlier today! We both liked it a lot!  We can't understand why Dreamworks has neglected to advertise it at all in our area.  I recommend it to everyone, it was really well made, and having read the book, I knew what was going to happen, but that didn't take away the enjoyment of watching such a delicious movie. Ben Wishaw was amazing and Alan was intense and wonderful, with one or two little smiles thrown in as a little bonus.  He speaks in what I've heard described as his "Posh-Perfect" diction. I think that is where people area being reminded of Snape, who does the same, but certainly without the smiles or affection shown by Richis' character.  I think you all will love it!  As if this wasn't enough fun, tomorrow I'm going to Winterthur with a friend to see Colonel Brandon's Pants! ( And the rest of his costume too!)

Wow! What a weekend!

Hello fellow fans and happy 2007 from Nova Scotia! We've wandered a bit from California, and some of that wandering has been sad, but you've all cheered me up with the news of Alan. How kind he is to his fans, and Rima too, bless her. I agree with those of you who don't know how she does it. If it were my husband - well, it's a good thing anthropologists don't have that trouble...hee.

Some of you have mentioned sick parents. My mum's cancer returned, and the last month has been spent accepting her coming death, helping to nurse her, holding her hand as she died, and the subsequent wake and funeral. I'm glad to be resting now but I feel for all of you who are suffering. My sympathies and prayers.

Mr. Nell and Little Miss Nell and I are celebrating her first birthday (late) tonight and we all hope you're continuing your own festivities. Thanks especially to the fine ladies who gave their accounts of meeting Alan! I get a vicarious thrill. Cheers!

Hello everyone.

I never write here but I always follow you!

I wanted to write my report of the Perfume night because I was the 15-year-old who was nervous and trembling!

I arrived at the Trycicle at around half past six but Alan wasn't there yet. So I met Ana and other Spanish girls and we spoke until they called us because the film was starting. Perfume is a fantastic film. I already saw it in Italian but in English was so much better. After the film I needed to go the toilet so I stood up. The back of the theatre was dark and there were people standing there. I was walking near them...when I was Alan among them. I stopped and I felt my heart beating very fast...expecially when Alan saw me and looked at me. When I came back form the toilet, I saw Rima in front of me. She's so much better than in picture! I went back to my seat and the interview started. Alan was so calm and happy and laughed a lot. Then I decided to make my own question. As someone has already written, I was so nervous and I was trembling. I think Alan noticed because he smiled at me. I asked him what he feels about acting with teenagers. I was so excited because he was looking at me!! When the interview ended, I went in the hall of the cinema and went close to him. I gave him a little present and I told him I'm his fan since 5 years, so he shook my hand. While he was talking with other fans, I saw Rima and told her she's a great woman. She laughed and said: "Thanks, nice to meet you!" She's such a nice woman! Alan was still there, so I went close to him again and said "thank you for everything...this is the most important day of my life." I will never forget the smile he gave in that moment and he said: "you've got so many days in your life." Then Ana made us a picture while he was signing autographs, and after I hugged her because I was too happy!

This has really been the most important and best day of my life...

Thanks everyone for the pictures and the lovely reports!

I post the picture where I'm close to Alan (hahaha look at my face!). The other one is me with Ana, Gloria and Marta (the Spanish girls!)

Hi Constance!!

Ana, I saw him reach out and haul you over for the photo! Glad it came out well.

Funny how these things work out. In a matter of a few days I went from having no intention of going to Kilburn to having one of the best "Rickman Night's Out" I've had (excluding Private Lives, of course )

Hello girls!

And Hello to Lex! thak you for put the pic in the forum

It was very interesting and enterteining (funny)

Alan remembered me and I could do two questions to him

I said him that I came from Spain.. and he smiled

my question was:

  •  What do you think about "la fura del baus" adaption?

He said me that I said again the company- la fura dels baus, then he said: la fura dels baus ( he repeated the phrase) with a smile and his answered was: fantastic

  • How would you have described Spain, in one word?

Then... he said; THRILLING

After I was with him and he signed me. He said me that remembered me!

I gave a gift to him.
and the last how say  Lex I made the pic with him...

Thaks

Rima was standing right next to me and we had a real nice little chat. She even said " it's about Alan, not me. I'm no one, he is" when I asked about her.(I greatly beg do differ! She's such a doll)

Lex- I have a feeling then that it was you both I saw talking.  I exchanged eye contact with the woman I thought was Rima, and I felt a jolt of recognition, even though I've only a vague idea what she looks like.

It's a shame if she really does feel like that.  She's the one who keeps him going, keeps him happy.  She stands aside and watches while all us women crowd around him - how fantastic is that?  I couldn't do it, if it were my man up there. I admire her for that.

My husband doesn't believe me when I say I don't dream of bedding Alan, but it's true (Snape, however, is a different matter!).  For me, a lot of Alan's charm stems from the fact he and Rima have been together for so many years.  They must have a real love and respect to have survived so long - especially in the career he has.  I admire them both for that. If I ever found out he'd strayed, he would plummet in my estimations, because that's not who I believe him to be.

Alfan, a sneak-preview of what you'll get.

First the image he's choosen for you.
No worries the scan just looks crab, the autograph doesn't!

I took two poems along and asked him which one to send along. Alan pointed this one out (I could have hugged him, as it's exactly the one I would have choosen!)

Love is sharing
And caring
And giving
Your heart in all that you do.
Loving is hoping
And coping
And spending
Your last penny on the other.
Loving is healing -
Forgiving,
Forgetting -
The hurts of the present and the past.
Loving is smilling
And laughing
And living
Each day as if it's your last

C., here's yours for Kendra. Alan said he'd prefer to sign this one for her as it is a more common one.
Btw. I told him about Kendra and things and he took our complete email correspondence with him. He said he wouldn't have enough time to flick through it and asked if he could have it to read it at home.
So I gave it to him, knowing none of us would actually mind.

New Jan, Rima was standing right next to me and we had a real nice little chat. She even said " it's about Alan, not me. I'm no one, he is" when I asked about her.(I greatly beg do differ! She's such a doll)
Haircolouring? Chestnut (I wouldn't say reddish as it gives a wrong impression)
At the bar Alan sat at the top of the table, Rima to his right, Scott and I between them a little aside from the table, and the cinema manager and another guy in a cosy corner opposite. (First table next to the bar)
Actually Scott and I turned up late due to a fancy dinner in Kensington and almost missed the tube. The receptionist let us in and there they were!
So we'd almost an hour for a drink before Alan, Rima and the guys went downstairs.
Alan was the first to turn up again, holding a bottle of champagne heading for the exit, knowing that the Ladies would "track him down" *lol*

Anyway, Rima and I talked another time but we got interrupted by the manager when I was telling her about the wedding gift for Alfan. She got hold of my arm and wanted Alan to sign a picture for me, but when I told her that he already had done so, she looked a little puzzled and went towards him.
I need not tell that dear Alan was in the middle of things and all femals wanting a picture taken with him.
You all got real lucky as he said he wouldn't have the time for it as he wanted to leave ( so he told me when he came back upstairs right after the Q & A and with the bottle in his hand!)

Ana was the last one he's been willing to have a picture taken with. And I remember him moving quickly forward, almost grabbing her and saying "C'mon. Quick now!"
If I'm not mistaken Gloria was with Ana?

Sorry for the late report folks, after I came home from visiting my mum in hospital I developed a bad headache and it's only just going off.  My son said it was Alan withdrawal symptoms!!!

Anyway here is a brief..ish account of my evening.

We arrived at the cinema around 6.30pm after getting a taxi from the station. From the outside it looked a bit of a dump with a very small entrance.  But when you got inside it was lovely and modern.  There was a small cafe, a bar and seating areas, as well as the ticket offices.  I ordered a toasted ham and cheese Panini and my daughter and I shared it.  Didn't get a drink because we might have needed to go before the film ended, and the Q&A usually runs straight on after meaning three and a half hours of not being able to go. By then it was getting very crowded, found Sue and some friends but failed to locate Jan in the hub bub. After a quick visit to the toilets we went downstairs to the cinema.  Saw Jan as we went to our seats and waved, but not able to chat.  Took our seats, front row middle. I was surprised how close the stage was to us, from my seat I could touch it with my feet if I stretched out. Alan was going to be very close when the time came and I began to feel excited.

The film started 10 mins late, not bad considering 300 people had to get seated. What can I say about the film?  It was brilliant! Much better than I thought it would be.  The first part of the film was very graphic I thought, extremely good camera work. It was easy to follow and had no dull boring bits at all, keeping you totally intrigued until the end..and what an end!  Alan was great, the crying bit reminded me of Snowcake and he did look decidedly Snapish in some shots.  The woman next to me was quite verbal when she was scared which was amusing, she almost ended up on the floor at one point.

The two and a half hours flew by and when it finished I think people were a little stunned.

Lights up and two people started to set the stage with two chairs, two mics, one table and two bottles of water with glasses. There wasn't time to go to the toilets as I thought and was glad we hadn't drunk anything.

I heard clapping and turned to see Alan and the threat re manager(I think) coming down the side aisle and up onto the stage. As he crossed the stage he looked down directly at us and gave a beaming smile which I returned. He took the right hand seat (facing him) which was dead opposite us.

First the manager guy asked several questions to get the session going and then opened it up to the floor. I can't remember the questions he asked, it was nothing too out of the ordinary. I was preoccupied at that time studying Alan's clothes. Blue jeans, brown boots, olive green round necked t-shirt, black or dark blue zip up jumper (same as Berlin) and a dark brown velvet jacket. His hair was quite long, hardly no sign now of any dye and very grey/white which suits him. He was very relaxed and happy which was a relief to see. Should have brought a recording device(if I had one) to capture the questions and answers as they didn't mention that you must not use one this time. One girl make me cringe when she said "Hello Alan darling" (apologies if it was someone from DH) he looked a bit stunned for a moment and I really felt for him, but soon recovered and said very sensually "He...ll..oooo"  The Spanish girl Ann who was an extra in the film asked him to say what he thought of Spain in one word...he replied "Thrilling"  Wasn't sure if he was referring to the nearby theme park/roller coasters that I should no doubt think he visited. He again referred to his own personal performance in the film as "debatable" and "could do better"  He also doesn't agree with films being given certificates, and anyone, regardless of age should be allowed to see a film if they want to and have an interest in it...preferably free as well.

I cannot comment too much on the answers to questions as it would give away the content of the film to those who have yet to savor this unique film. But Alan was funny, relaxed and laughed a lot, it was great to see him like this.

It lasted about 50 mins in all, which sadly flew by too fast, I could watch him for hours!

After he had left the stage people began to move to the exit, one bad point about being in the front is that you are last out of the theatre and it took some time to finally get to the foyer. Met jan on the way out and had a quick chat.

I thought Alan had gone, but then I saw his head towering above the crowd surrounded by women.  It was difficult to get near him and I waited while he signed photos etc. Within minutes of being there I heard him say gently "I really have to be going now"

but still the women begged for just one more autograph, just one more photo with him. He was too polite to say no and carried on for a little while longer.  I think I was the last one to get a photo with him. I reminded him that I was Susan from Folkestone and he replied "Yes...I know you are" In a wonderful dreamy drawl.

I gave him the best wishes from the girls with me at Hampstead for which he thanked me for.  Suddenly Rima appeared out of nowhere and they hurriedly left. He turned once more as he got to the door and looked back thoughtfully, I don't think he wanted to leave his devoted harem!

So there you have it.....another fantastic Alan evening.

Here's a report from our very own RickiNicki!  She's way to busy with studies to be able to post but she "im'ed" me this report and said it was OK to share.

Yes, we had fun. It was a great movie and Alan was charming!  The Q&A was really interesting.

The first question was “How did the script come to you?”  His reply: “by post”

He spoke highly of Tom Tykwer and he was impressed that the German crew in Spain just spoke English, no German at all.  I remember that he talked about how Tom is a You Director (or something like that). And that Tom lets actors interact and just do and doesn't tell them what to do, like "close-up" or something like that.  And he had watched Run Lola Run before he got that script. He didn't know any other movies by Tom Tykwer, but he said he watched some more afterwards...

Someone asked if he planned to retire.  He said he had no plans to do so and that there are enough wheelchair roles to offer. He was really in a good mood.

I remember a girl sitting next to us, very nervous, trembling... she was 15 and asked about his experience with filming with teenagers.... Can't really remember his answer though.

I also remember that someone asked him about his badboy roles and what it was like to play a good guy in Perfume.  And he said he only played 1 villain and all of us said 2 and then we remembered it's a lot more but we didn't tell him, of course. Lol

Thank you RickiNicki and don't study to hard!

I can't believe that someone asked him if he had plans to retire!  Its a good thing he was in a good mood!  LOL

Carolyn the huge photo from the newspaper makes me swoon!    Thanks for posting it!  Its so good that I had to send it to a friend who isn't an AR fan at all.  I just had to tell her "you seeeeee why I lurv him so much?"

Yall, I just have to share with you something my son told me last night.  He tried so hard to get me an autograph photo of AR for Christmas.  Bless his heart, he really didn't know what he was doing but he tried!  *grin*  If only he knew that an autograph photo doesn't do anything for me.  LOL  But if he had suceeded, I would have no doubt cherished it because it was from him.

One other thing I want to share with you.  My SuzyQ sent me the cutest little Jamie bear for Christmas!  She is soooo creative with crafts and art and such.  I just had to take a picture of him so yall could see.  Isn't the little cello the cutest little thing?

She's also done a Lucious bear. She sent me a picture but she's not quite satisfied with it yet so I'm holding out on sharing it right now.  Of course, I think its perfect.  *grin*

Uhm, well. There's a poem and a signed picture on it's way!!!

Alan selected an image he liked most for you on your special day. And I must say his choice was a good one.

- I'm terribly sorry for Kendra, though. Alan messed it up!

He misspelled the name and made it "Kemdra"! So sorry

Anyway, while all of you where watching the movie downstairs, Alan, Rima, the cinema staff, Scott and I had a drink at the Tricycle Bar just before the Q&A.

While Alan had a glass of water, I decided for something alcoholic and had a white wine.

Alan was very relaxed and chatty, but I must say when coming back upstairs he seemed almost rushed and told me he'd not be able to leave the cinema fulfilling every picture request.

(But running off with a magnum champagne bottle, huh? )

Some Ladies got lucky and though he may have been tempted to leave much earlier, he friendly chatted with the audience and those seeking an autograph or to have a picture taken with him got lucky.

Btw, Ana, he took you for a child, not believing you to be 21!*grin*

I shall send you your picture in a few hours. I'm actually in a rush now.

PERFUME Q+A, TRICYCLE THEATRE, KILBURN 3/01/07

Sue has to travel home from London today, so my report will get to you first.  Yes, I was there last night, too.

Sue and I recognised each other at once - we'd exchanged pics.  I was only able to wave as I was trapped mid-row.  Sue was in the front row, I was five back.

The film itself is great - don't listen to the critics.

I can't tell you how nervous I'd been the whole day.  I was worried I would embarrass myself, or come over with a hot flush.  I'd spent the entire day trying to calm myself down with herbal teas, a potions bath etc.

At least I had hubby next to me in the cinema to keep me under control.  However, at the vital moment (end of the film and before AR arrived), Hubby disappeared to the toilet.  HELP!

And then there he was! Alan Rickman! In the same room as me! Looking larger than life in jeans, dark jacket (not sure it was the velvet one) a zip up jumper and compulsory black tee shirt.  Plus brown lace-up shoes.

Hubby arrived back just then, along with my guardian angel who watched over me, stopped me from going beetroot red or having a panic attack; giving me the courage to raise my hand and ask my question without my voice faltering at all.  Alan repeated my question for those who hadn't heard (using the same gesture as me on the same word, I noticed.  *squeeee*) and then answered at length.  And I felt he was looking at me as he answered, too.

Mine was about the third question, and there were about twenty more before the session ended.  Sue and I were able to chat a little as we made our way to the foyer - and then there was Alan again, being waylayed by fans in the foyer.  From his fingers hung gifts of cellophane-wrapped things and bottle bags (some with champagne in).

Sue and I separated to make our own individual way to him.  I don't know which of us reached him first, but I managed to have a quick one-to-one with him, and he listened politely as I told him how much I'd enjoyed Rachel Corrie, and thanked him for being brave enough to do the play.  I was also SO impressed with the others around me, who held back their autograph books until my turn had ended.  What a great bunch of fans he has.

You know how, when someone meets a famous person and they say 'oh, he was smaller than he looks on screen', well that isn't our Alan.  I was surprised just how larger than life he seemed.  I've written so many fanfics where I have the woman looking up into Snape's face, and there I was, looking up into that same, large wonderful face!  I'll allow myself to swoon now!

We had a taxi waiting, so I had to say a hurried goodbye to Sue (who, I think, had just had a photo taken with Alan), and wrench myself away from the gathering.

That's my account.  Sue will give you hers, I hope - I want to find out what happened after I left.

On the whole, I'm happy to report that Mr. Rickman seemed happy, healthy and very, very gorgeous!

You always find such great things on Flickr, thanks!  Sorry to always post right after you, but I wasn't sure if you knew that you can access larger sizes of the photos on Flickr.  I think you may have to be logged in, but just click on 'all sizes' above the photo.

The one you just posted is available is 1024x683.

Ok Claudia-

I found multiple theater listings

on accessatlanta.com

I'm not sure what part of GA you're in,

but it did have some other counties

listed. As far as I can tell, Friday is the

day it starts for all of the places listed.

Finally! It's here! And luckily, I found

one a little bit closer to me, so I don't

have to haul my cookies all the way into Atlanta.

Hope any other fellow-Georgians here have

the chance to make it!

Woohoo(now if we can just get Snowcake damnit..)

Claudia-

We have a bit of news!

There's a movie theater in Duluth

that has Perfume listed as showing Friday,

Jan 5th! It's called the Regal Medlock Crossing 18.

It's not in my neck of the woods, but I'm sure I can

muster the strength to make the trip! *snicker, snort*

Got this info from fandango, but I'm going to double check

just in case. Couldn't find a website for the theater itself.

Anywho, I'm getting excited!

Hello there are...very belated Christmas, Happy New Year, and all the other Holidays. Which are just as good but I have terrible spelling. SO, I skimmed through the past few pages and I dont think this has been posted. It makes me swoon: Alan Rickman on the Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos.  There is a point in the middle where there is a blank period...i think you can skip through it.  He talks everything from Sweeney Todd to HP to Snow Cake to MNiRC.  YEAH!

Thanks for the pics, Camerata! They're great!

Just as an FYI for anyone who doesn't have all the HP DVDs and was planning on a purchase, Warner Bros. announced that they are pulling all HP DVDs from circulation during the first couple of months of 2007. I have a feeling they're doing what Disney does: pull them off shelves and then schedule certain "limited window" release dates to create buyer enthusiasm.

There's a nice interview w/S.Weaver about "Snow Cake" at:

The new year is getting off to a good start!  I'm almost rid of this crud I've had for almost a month!!!!

Anyway, I've been working on the December archive and I really consider myself lucky in being able to do that because I get to go back over the whole month and I always spot things I missed.

First, I want to thank Emerys, Camerata, DagmAR, Chalebh, and Liamath for the beautiful Christmas cards yall posted over the past month.  I am so envious of everyone's creative and artistic talent here.  I'm just grateful that yall share with us.

Some time over the next few days, I will begin working on the birthday card contest.  I was kind of thinking of excluding character images for the birthday card contest...what do yall think?

Also, Elaine!!!  Thank you for the pic and link to Nobel Son!!!  As with any AR film, I am on pins and needles til it comes out.

I haven't seen any listings for Snow Cake and Perfume in my area yet.  I know we have some north Georgians here.....have yall seen any listings for either of those films?

Alfan, you know my feelings on eBay!  I can't believe (well I guess I can) that bracelet!  Geez....what people won't try to sell.  I saw a documentary about eBay a few days ago and let me tell ya....it wasn't good.  They had the woman CEO on it and she acted like a zombie trying to defend the company.  She needs to get a grip!  LOL

I have to get back to work now...talk to yall soon!  *hugs*

Coming out of lurkdom after 3 months of musical madness to wish YOU ALL  a FANTASTICand . Hope you all had a great Christmas, no doubt AR filled !! Did anyone else watch "Sense and Sensibility " on Sat. night ( even though I 've got it on DVD ). Looking forward very much to the Feb. release of " Snow Cake " DVD and the release of the films later in the year.

Back to the slog tomorrow. Hope all those going to see AR tomorrow have a wonderful time ! I thought about going but Kilburn is not the easiest ( or nicest ) place to get to. Look forward to hearing everyones' reports. I wish AR would make appearances elsewhere in the country. We don't all live in London.

Hope you're feeling better, Claudia. Thanks again for running such a well-informed site and having such a great bunch of Rickmaniacs to contribute and discuss AR.

Happy New Year to Bluebeatbabe ( if you're there ! ) and Susan in Kent. Hope to hear from you sometime .

Hey everyone! Love the site as it is where I've gotten all of my Alan downloads!!

I actually posted to ask a favor. A while back Claudia, I believe it was, posted the songs that would be on a Snow Cake soundtrack.

I have, or can buy from iTunes, all the other songs expect the one by the Drifters. If anyone could upload that specific song, or all of them (so I don't have to buy them), that would be amazing!!

You can also email me at irregularfrankiefan@yahoo.com to send me the songs.

Thanks so much!!!!!!

Happy New Year's everyone!!   I hope everyone had a wonderful and SAFE night.  Ours was nice with just a little trouble from some ill mannered college kids but it was nice nonetheless.

Luv, I'm sorry your connection to the board is slowed down from the links above.  EF is absolutely right.  As soon as I can get some time to update the site, I will move all of it over.  Please be patient with me and don't give up here because your presence here is just as important as anyone else's.  I promise to get on the update as soon as possible.

Well said Zorra.  I know to our newer friends here that it sounds like Dumpy is being picked on but I just want to explain to everyone that Dumpy has been up to this kind of behavior for several years now.  She disappears for a while and then all of a sudden, she pops back up and is OK for a bit but then starts causing trouble and hurt feelings.

Like I said Dumpy.....if you can't be nice....take it elsewhere!

Happy New Year Hugs to everyone!!!!

Ladies! I must say I've had a very good New Year! Though it isn't the end at all, I merely have got a couple of minutes to distract from a real holiday here. So, I've just found some articles, very pleasant for new 2007 year.

http://torontosun.com/Entertainment/Movies/2006/12/31/3097131-sun.html

BEST ACTOR -- Leonardo DiCaprio, The Departed: In a performance profoundly different from his past work, a maturing DiCaprio excels as an embittered Boston undercover cop in Martin Scorsese's magnificent mean-streets movie. Other noteworthy leading actors this year include Roy Dupuis for The Rocket (Maurice Richard), Jack Black in Nacho Libre (although he doesn't have a hope in hell at the Oscars), Alan Rickman in Snow Cake and Tommy Lee Jones in The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada (released in 2006 in Canada, it was out in 2005 in the U.S. and was robbed of proper Oscar consideration).

and one nice

http://www.nwitimes.com/articles/2007/01/01/entertainment/entertainment/ac107e1ba529e5d886257251005c8547.txt

Alan Rickman is typically formidable as the father of the stunning redhead Grenouille seeks most, who will go to whatever lengths he must to protect his little girl when women start dropping at an alarming rate.

Probably someone's seen it already.

All right, hope everyone has the peace anyway.

Good luck
