Comments: Whee, 14 hours and then I'm on that plane to the sun!!!
No, def not AR in Bath! It's just not his "thing" and the resemblance is only passing! I am tickled though at the "daily" posters who believe that it is him. Hmmmm.
Juliet, am thinking of you. I seem to have a lot of pals who are going through the same thing - but also have a lot of pals who have been there, bought the T shirt and seen the movie! It's a long process, but it works! Just hope you don't get too much of a reaction.
Ah, this drought is getting into disaster proportions! Perhaps we should call
him the "Scarlet Pimpernel"? At least we have gems like that Cha Cha clip to
keep us going! I've just uploaded "Blind Corner" (having found the other half of
it) onto my ipod to take with me to listen to on the beach. Can't think of
anything better - well, I could, but that's not likely to happen!
What is your location? ALABAMA Comments: Hi Claudia...
Really impressed with your site....It looks good and seems like your audience
really enjoys posting to it....it even appeals to the younger crowd.....
What is your location? Massachusetts Comments: Juliet, you are in my prayers for a speedy recovery. I know it isn't easy to go through, but never lose your good senes of humor. (I just came through this myself within the last year) Godspeed Juliet and take care. Pam
What is your location? New Zealand Comments: I got the Google Alert from Guam and thought it was very perceptive except he missed out TMD.
What is your location? GA Comments: Juliet! I am so happy that 1 session is now history! Hang in there and may they always find a good vein first time!
What is your location? Vermont Comments:
Boy oh boy, I haven't had a chance to get here for a few days and you ladies
have been busy! Thank you Claudia and Kimberly for those new clips,
they're wonderful
Juliet, you are in my thoughts.
Comments: Yet another Villain article HERE
I don't know about that photo being a manip or not but I would say the sure sign (sadly) is the flesh is way younger than it would be now!! (speaking as a fifty-something!). Just check out the jowl line of recent pix.
What is your location? the Netherlands Comments: Dear dear Juliet, itīs so good to see that you didnīt lose your sense of humour! Good luck to you girl, weīre all thinking of you. Thanks for posting all those (fake) pics and links!
What is your location? GA Comments: Thanks for all the latest pics, guys!
Juliet - you are in my thoughts!
What is your location? Los Angeles Comments: Oh, puh-leeese.....if that isn't a
photo manip, then I'm a monkey's uncle. Just look at the tell-tale white
lines around the arms and shoulders. Give me just half a break.
We all know that Alan was filming Snow Cake at this time and whoever
put that photo together and is trying to pass it off as a legitimate picture of
Alan must think we are all fools.
Anyway...on to more important things. Juliet - hang in there, girlfriend. The best "anti-sickness" medicine you can have is an afternoon with the real Alan. Pop in your favorite AR film, lay back, and get some rest. We're all wishing you good thoughts today.
Comments: Juliet - it always helps when they find a good vein! Had my blood test today too, but the nurse jiggled the needle about in the vein a bit too much for my liking, ended up at work with a very stiff and sore arm. I do hope The Professor behaved himself while visiting the hospital with you. He wasn't sweeping through the wards giving out detentions, by any chance? BTW, have your son's toy soldiers come out of hiding yet? Kathy - thanks for the running commentary throughout your hols - hope you're enjoying yourself! Doesn't take much for me to post a pic from The Preacher either, I need no encouragement at all!
What is your location? north of here Comments: Yeah Juliet!! Hang in there girl, we're all rooting for you!
Comments: Juliet- I'm glad they didn't ruin more veins to you! I hope your therapy period
goes fast so you can enjoy better days
What is your location? UK Comments: Had my first chemotherapy today, and guess what - they found a good vein!! AFNH - I took the Professor with me, well, potions and chemo aren't so far apart, are they, LOL! Come home with enough anti-sickness pills to sink a battleship, so will just have to see how I react to all this over the next 3 weeks. 1 session down, only 5 to go, "never give up, never surrender".
What is your location? Italy Comments: thank you Kimberly and Claudia for the clips and everyone for pics etc! Thank you!!! sorry if I typed something wrong
What is your location? Germany, rainy, puuh Comments: Claudia, I nearly got a heart attack!
What a pic, good grief, this man gives me another sleepless night. Thanks so
much. As I am alone tonight I am going to watch all the new clips to fill the
sleepless night,
NO, this is definitely not Alan on the street. To add one point to Alfan and the
others: he has broader shoulders....
What is your location? England Comments: There is simply no way that that could have happened without the press picking up on it. No way at all.
What is your location? Indonesia What is the URL of your HomePage? (include "http://") http://www.xanga.com/alan_rickman_freak Comments: Jeezz.. It can't be him.. Look at that eyebrows.. No way that's Alan..
What is your location? Canada Comments: Ok, on further inspection (zooming in on the face) i do not believe that is Alan for four reasons. 1- I agree that the time frame is wrong, Alan was supposedly still in Canada at the time of the photo, nearing Vancouver i thinkish. 2- Alan has quite a promanent bone bump on his nose that is quite evident in pictures, along with a red mark that always seems to be on the right side of his nose(could be hidden with the makeup) 3-Alan also has a scar an the right side under his lip that is usually visable( could also be hidden with makeup). 4-That guy has different shaped eyebrows than Alan.
Besides, this is something that I cannot see Alan doing in public.
But- there are similarities -the lips are the same - the hair is greying
And if it is him, well, what the hell is that statment saying?
Oh, and the guy in the front looks like Norman Reedus ( the stragler in Dark Harbor).
But just my opinion, and thats it, an opinion.
Comments: And almost forgotten... THANK YOU so much for the wonderful new clips!
Comments: I think too, that that's not Alan. But I was not so sure about it... But then, when I thought about it, it doesn't even fit in what he was doing - I mean it like this: The pictures were taken in UK (Abbey) on June 4th. We know, he was still in Canada at the end of May. Could he be back already on 4th? And when he was, why would he do something like this and then not go to John Donne celebration on 9th? Why at all to do something like this? And would the press not notice it? So, now I also think, that it's not Alan.
What is your location? GA Comments:
Rachael, trust me, the Conan interiview IS that funny! Just wait till you see The View.
I'm so glad you liked The Preacher, Hikity! In honor of the piece, I think I'll post a couple of pics.
Comments: I saw that earlier too! Hmmm, it bears a striking resemblance but I don't think so.
Comments: just a link to something from rickman_daily lj: Do you think, this is Alan? ![]() http://www.livejournal.com/community/rickman_daily/429418.html + I went to gataga and found the source site of the picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/16377475@N00/17849945/
What is your location? Virginia Comments:
Okay I don't if it were I have been up all night because I can't sleep and I am
kinda tired know or if the Conan interview was that funny. I had to wipe the
tear from my eyes I was laughing so hard after watching it. People if you don't
download it you are missing out on alot of funny stuff.
What is your location? Los Angeles Comments: Kimberly....you are da bomb! Where ever did you get all those clips? Especially the Cha Cha one. It's fantastic and thank you so much for sharing it with us. You have brought us all great joy! Thanks also to Claudia for her tireless efforts to put all of these wonderful treasures in one place.
I'm now slogging through the 3 hour download for The View. I've
seen the shorter, grainier version a million times....but the truly obsessed
must have every second of AR that they possibly can! Thanks for
feeding the obsession.
What is your location? Germany Comments: Alfan, my guess: He is in Europe...The Parfume will start on 12 July.
What is your location? Canada Comments: I forgot to thank you guys ( bad Alfan, bad) for the Cha Cha clip ( its the one i dont have). Its always nice to know i have Alan at my disposal whenever i need him. I just wish i knew where he was,i mean i know Canada is big but surly he isnt still here. I mean he was in Toronto then was spotted in Vancouver and well thats Canada, hee hee so he must be home or vacationing somwhere else. (oh and thats not true, Alberta, Saskatachewan and Manitoba have lots to offer the vacationing brit.)
What is your location? north of here Comments: Many thanks for the new clips! The 6 plus hours it took my dear old dial up to down-load was well worth it. I must say that seeing the View clip in context made it even funnier.
What is your location? FL Comments: Claudia and Sabine have already said it perfectly, but let me make it three: Thank you, Rina!
What is your location? GA Comments: Thanks for the translation, Rina! That is quite funny! I think the best moment of the interview though is when the show host comments on AR's big hand... LOL
What is your location? GA Comments:
Hello Rina and welcome to our little piece of AR online! Thank you and
Comments: Hi!
I had just recently discovered your site and I must say: THANK YOU for all your hard work and time in getting all these clips up!! Concerning the ChaCha clip, the interviewer only summarizes that as a director, Mr. Rickman has taken and learned from other directors especially from Mr. Altman and that is his stance ~ err sorry, it sounds so awkward but that's basically it. The narrator introducing him is funnier (^.^) "Hmmm? Who is this high class/splendid faced man bathed in the flash (of the camera)? Some people may wonder if they have seen him before. Yes please recall, it is..(and Alan Rickman introduces himself)" LOL
What is your location? the Netherlands Comments: Hikity, I do remember. Please let me know the exact date and Iīll let you know if we can work something out. Thanks!
Wow, thanks Claudia and Kimberly for the new clips! How did you guys know I was in for some ARction after this periode of silence?
Comments: Thanks for all the clips Claudia! Whilst I was opening my files I had great fun clicking on stuff I hadn't seen for yonks and had a nice Rickfest. For some reason with that Cha Cha one I kept thinking of Bill Murray in Lost in Translation where he goes on the Japanese talk show!
Comments:
Oh Kimberley!
Now to enjoy!
What is your location? Germany Comments: Thousand thanks to you Claudia - the preacher is fantaaaaastic, I can't believe it - a 20-minute-monologue - love it. And another huge thankyou for the new clips to Kimberly and Claudia. Peekabooh, I am quite sure HE will be in Munich very soon - remember?? love you all

Alan We love you! I love you!
Love you all..
What is your location? Austria Comments: @Kimberly and Claudia - thank so so much for your hard word and sharing with us all those lovely AR-pieces! I'm that happy about it! Ricky
What is your location? GA Comments: Happy shopping, sue!
I've been a bit curious as to what the Japanese hostess says before AR makes his statement to his fans too. Anyone mind translating? Momoko, are you still here?

What is your location? Canada Comments: "not so cool, not so hot"
---come now in case you havnt noticed the throngs of women at every event that scream your name still to this date 10 years after you made that interview.I think that Japanese interviewer hit it right on the head. Oh to understand Japanese, because i think she was hot for him. ( oh, like i wouldnt be)
What is your location? FL Comments: Arigato, Kimberly and Claudia! Wonderful stuff!
Does anyone know what the Cha Cha hostess said (in Japanese) before AR's message to his fans?
What is your location? GA Comments:
Thank you, thank you, Kimberly for that wonderful ChaCha clip (I had no clue
what this was, btw! LOL)!
Many, many thanks to Claudia as well for adding this wonderful clip to your site!
What is your location? GA Comments: Thanks for the tip on Bill Nighy images on the MPH site, Em. Those wide armbands would be cool if MJ hadn't ruined the thought of an armband for me.
I've placed three wristbands on people in my office (they wear them every day) and others are asking me about them every week AND two ladies in my leasing office have asked for them!
Its going to be an exciting two weeks!
What is your location? GA Comments: Oops, forgot to mention. The next update will include a Japanese Press Conference AR did for tWG! It will be a biggie--that's why it had to wait until next time. Sorry...but at least its something to look forward to.
What is your location? GA Comments: Hokay! To help alleviate a bit of the stress from this blasted AR drought, I've finished updating the site with some new stuff!!!
First I must extend my deepest gratitude to Kimberly for sending me all these
new videos to share. She really came through on my wish list! Thank you
First up....
Television page (all clips thanks to Kim): Conan Interview The View Interview Kuro's Cinema Cha Cha Error correction to the E! Sundance clip blurb Error correction to the BBC4 Chris Hampton Interview blurb
Music Video page: Mesmerizing Mesmer by the ever fabulous Danielle C! She does wonders with a song and some pics of The Man!
Index page: I've added a link to a cute little site from Clary!
Charity Page: Human Rights Watch Sponsored Arts for Education (SAFE)
Enjoy, everyone!
Also, I wanted to mention that MTV and VH1 are supposed to air Live 8 this weekend here in the US. If anyone knows of any other stations that might carry it OR stations in other countries that might carry it, please post the information here.
This is total speculation but you just never know if AR might be a part of this. Maybe introduce an act or two??? It would be wonderful if he ended this drought with an appearance a THE place to be for July 4th weekend!
Comments: Nice pic but I wish they had either cropped the top a bit lower or a bit higher. Kinda makes him look as though the hairline has given up the ghost. Have to do it myself! (When I can get the thing to work...) Thanks for the find, though, Claudia.
Comments: Click on "celebrities" at the top of that MPH page and you get color portraits -- no AR, but Bill Nighy lookin' good. Thanks for finding this, Claudia!
Comments: Kathy, be sure to get a couple of boules of Berthillon ice cream when you're in Paris! It's soooooo good! Wish I was there to get some, too!
Comments:
Thanks Claudia!! Love the Annie Lennox and Coldplay ones too
What is your location? GA Comments:
Here's a clearer version of AR's Click picture that AFNH scanned for us a while back. There seems to be a larger version available but apparently the site is having some problems. Find it and others at the MPH Images page.
What is your location? the Netherlands Comments: Wow Kathy, sounds like youīre having a great time! Have fun in Paris, donīt forget to visit the Sacre Coeur et Quartier Latin (my favorite place to go). Will you be in Paris for one day only? So nice of you to keep posting "on route". Thanks everyone for all the new pics and links, thank, thanks, thanks. And a very warm welcome to all you newbies! ShARe the fun! Somewhere I have heard that Alan would be in Barcelone next month. Does anyone of you know when and where exactly?

Emily, I may just have to name my firstborn after you, I am so excited by your
TWG DVD news! I've been holding out for Region 1--fingers (and everything
else) crossed for extras! That film changed my life (it made me seriously
reconsider my career path at the time, and I've been writing and studying ever
since), and the fact that AR directed it just makes it that much sweeter.
Gotta go the fangirl route for a moment: I got the Smile of Smiles when I
thanked him for that film at the Stage Door at the Albery. *sigh* Just
wish hubby had been a bit quicker with the camera, 'cause it was one brilliant
flash and then it was gone. LOL Still, he did manage to snap a couple of
photo memories for me, so I'll keep him. Haven't time to comment on everything here, but stunning pics, great news items, and, as usual, great conversation. Thanks, all!
What is your location? GA Comments: Its great to hear from you, kathy! Sounds like you are really enjoying yourself and that's what its all about! Enjoy Paris!
Hikity, you can find The Preacher on the Television page here at ARDLH. Enjoy...it really is one of his tour de force performances!
What is your location? Germany, incredible hot Comments: Dear Jules, would you pls be so kind as to let us know the link to Revolutionary Witness's clip - I couldn't find it... Kathy, AR showing up in Paris?? Joking, but that would be great - cross my fingers

Been hanging out in Russell Square trying to finish my reading--as usual am behind in things. Spent yesterday afternoon at Nat'l picture gallery--saw John Lennon, and Paul mcCartney but no AR. Great Pictures of Frida Kahlo.
Am off to Paris tomorrow for the day--fast train thru the chunnel.
Will try to check back when I can--hope AR turns up. Bye all

What is your location? GA Comments: Hey guys, Before they make them take it down: That Boat Scene from Dark Harbor on rickman_daily! I mean THAT scene, if you know what I mean! ![]()
What is your location? England Comments: Good morning, everyone. Thank you for the welcome, Claudia. I have just been watching the clip from Revolutionary Witness. I couldn't take my eyes off Alan throughout his monologue, all 20 minutes of it. *grins* What a superb actor he is! Even when remaining in the same position he has that innate ability to express himself so well with his facial expressions and the intonation of that voice of his. No wonder we love him so much.
Phew! Well, we are in the midst of a heatwave here in the North of England and we aren't used to it! It is lovely, though silly me has decided to decorate, oh well, I best get on. Before I go, here is a pic of Alan looking cool:
Enjoy your day everyone.
What is your location? New Zealand Comments: I ordered "The Winter Guest" from England - region 2 last month and there are no extras. I shall be spitting mad if Region 1 has got extras but on the other hand, I will be very happy for all of you in Region 1. Win some, lose some. I was also thinking that Alan may have dropped by the Corrie family if he was still in that part of the world.
What is your location? GA Comments: Brrrrr....is it cold in here?
Brilliant find, Emily! Let's hope for some extras!!!!
It can be pre-ordered from Amazon.

Welcome Jules and Teresa! I'm so glad you found us and I hope you'll post as often as you can.
What is your location? Maine Comments: This is a really delightful collection of items related to the work of a very watchable actor, always creative artist and truly interesting person. Through it, I discovered I have been a fan much longer and in more depth than I realized. Thank you for the hard work you devote to this. It's nice to have one spot where I can mention this man's work without getting the now familiar rolling of the eyes (but it's okay to make me listen to every detail of a lecture about camera parts? c'mon!).
Comments: I always thought that his "page boy" hair cut in his younger days was only for R & J and similar parts but he seems to sport in it most of his earlier stage roles. I am so glad that he eventually "grew out" of it!
Comments: Oh ta Juliet! I never know whether the Friday or the Sunday one is the first broadcast.
What is your location? UK Comments: Sue, I think Desert Island Discs will be repeated on radio 4 next Fri a.m., around 9.30, I think.
Comments: Yeah I think it's the one with the fringe and check shirt with a bit of paper and there are a few of Ruby Wax there too looking very young and different.
What is your location? GA Comments: OK...I've got me glasses on now. Nix the first two guesses.
The young Rickman can be found far right just below center reading (or singing).
What is your location? GA Comments: And right in the center on the last row?
What is your location? GA Comments: Is that him in the bottom right hand corner, Sue?
Comments: Some old theatre programmes for sale on ebay. This is the RSC's production of Loves Labour's Lost in 1978. Can you spot the young Rickman??
What is your location? Twente Comments: TNX Claudia!
What is your location? Sheffield.UK a beautiful day Comments: Hi Everyone, I really enjoyed TGITC. Bill Nighy is priceless... he delivered his lines with such poise and there is beautiful interplay between the 2 main characters. Bill Nighy...' I may not have said very much but there is alot I want to say...' Richard Curtis manages to put across a serious message within a comedic drama. A brilliant cast, notably Ken Stott(well cast) and the wonderful Harriet Walter- (another old friend of Alan's ). Sue, I saw the Brian Wilson set at Glastonbury on TV... fantastic....the hits just kept coming. Brian Wilson is truly gifted... I know he has had some mental health problems but his performance was truly rockin'. Absolutely outstanding. Where oh, where is Alan ? Missing ya ! Bluebeatbabe
What is your location? GA Comments: Creamuts posted this over at Rickman Daily. She found this on eBay with a blue line and did a wonderful job removing it.
Comments: Just a reminder to Brits with satellite; Something the Lord Made shows tonight at 8.30pm on Sky Movies 7.
Wow Pam, your kids have long summer hols don't they?! Ours pack in the end of the 3rd week in July then go back first few days of September.
What is your location? Massachusetts Comments: Hi! Happy Summer everyone..The kids are out of school until after Labor Day in September. Nice long summer beach days etc. I just wanted to let you guys know in case someone hasn't ordered the Barchester Chronicles yet, that if you are a member of the Columbia House DVD club, they are offering it right now for $11.49 (when you purchase another tape at full price-I ordered the complete Beatles 4 shows that were shown on the Ed Sullivan show back in 1964 when I was around 12 oe 13!!!) Should be fun. I also got TMD for $5.98 as I found the VHS copy at the fair earlier this year, so this will even be better... I enjoyed all th AR photos. Keep them coming and Happy Birthday wishes and belated wishes to everyone that has had a birthday since I was here last. off to work in a few minutes and then we are cleaning this house top to bottom so we can relax the rest of the summer...Boy is that dust going to fly!!! See you all later, have a great day-Pam
What is your location? GA Comments: I've never had a problem with age differences older man/younger woman and visa versa. My mother, back in the 70s, bit the bullet and married a man 17 years younger than herself and it worked out fine for them.
I do however, have a problem with the obvious double standard. And worse, another point that Neva Chonin's article is that a lot of the loudest "cacklers" are magazines run by women!
"Oh please...what can I do to make it easier for you to stab me in the back?"
What is your location? Austria, lunch-break Comments: wow, ladies. Just a short time away and needing that much time to get through all your postings (will be a busy evening for me *g*)
@Vicy, Sue - "what's good for the goose is good for the gander" - also my openion. I always realize angrily, that they all are wondering because a man has an older wife / lover, but it seems to be normal the other way round.
Have all a nice day. Ricky
What is the URL of your HomePage? (include "http://") http://alanholic.boo.pl Comments: I've just found this one... And I really love the way he looks. So I post it here and go back to work. ![]()
Comments: Interesting link Vicki. It certainly is true that the media is happier to see an older guy with a young woman then the other way round. Also I agree a lot of women are quick to come down on their own sex too. I have often noticed that the media is happy to flaunt the old Dads too. Rod Stewart is to be a father again at 60 and there are still comments like "Good old Rod, still got lead in his pencil!" etc etc However if a woman decides to have a baby in her late forties then there are cries of horror!! "She will be a pensioner when the kid is a teen!" So will Rod!! As ever double standards abound. Personally, I have always found older men more attractive even if it means, as my husband so succinctly puts it, that at my age I shall have to start trawling the nursing homes!! Of course I can appreciate some hot young man but from a fancying point of view I still find most of the men I like are over 40.
BTW I went to listen to the Ruby Wax thing again this morning and you guessed
it! It's another one that doesn't allow replays for "rights reasons"
What is your location? Los Angeles Comments: All these gorgeous new (well, new for me anyway) pictures have me running for the drool bib. Keep them coming! I love them!
Unfortunately, I do not get HBO so I guess I will have to wait to enjoy GitC.
I clicked on a link that I thought was going to be an article about GitC, but
instead turned out to be a passionate piece about the double standards in
May-December romances. Specifically, that's it's always looked upon as
acceptable for an older man/younger woman relationship but the opposite is often
treated as a scandal. Personally, I say what's good for the goose is good
for the gander. Demi, Cameron, et al......you go, girls!
You can read the article here
Any opinions?
Comments: I would like to see an end to poverty, too. There are huge obstacles.
Politics involves hierarchy, there will always be those poor people who are used
by the people above them That's a sample of what I've heard and what a huge problem! It's never been done before, wiping out world poverty, so there are many skeptics, but I think if we keep trying it will happen. Let's pass on our ideals to our children, and grandchildren. One thing happening is they are growing up thinking recycling is normal, that there are at least attempts to find solutions to poverty. Finally, we are living, I believe in the peak of material wealth and the individual in rich countries has what people did not have just a couple hundred years ago. We are running out of everything. Luxuries are treated like necessities in leading countries, in contrast, children are dying of starvation, lack of water, living in weather torn places, and I doubt anyone actually likes it, but just what are you willing to sacrifice? Could we trade some of our possessions for the noble act of giving to those who are in an emergency situations every day of their lives? Yes, I saw "A Girl in a Cafe", too! Poverty is a target we have to keep firing on, we will eventually hit it! It's such a sticky problem it was probably hard to read my post, but that's part of the problem, poverty can be so demoralizing to us all. From not sharing

I would like to say a very big thank you to the owner of this site for providing
so many wonderful Alan gems to download.
I have just watched Girl in the Café this evening. It was very good and Richard Curtis did a very good job of highlighting the need to do something about the situation on the African continent. Let us hope that something tangible will be done at the G8 summit in Edinburgh.
Once again

I once spent hours reading everbody's "desert Island Discs" picks on the BBC website. I love the whole concept. Many friends of AR on there, but no AR. Here is Ruby's list (I hope).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/desertislanddiscs.shtml
Comments: Coo-ee. Back from oop north. Only 5 more nights before my holiday, thank the gods! I missed TGitC completely but I'm willing to bet it will be on BBC3 or 4 or something. Have to admit, it wasn't something I was aching to see. I like BN, but not that much...... You need a lot of patience to get all those watermarks off. The seller is being a might careful! I think he is holding his "freebie" bag rather than Rima's hand, though. Interesting pics, though. Sue, I love thunderstorms, too but that was a mighty big one. We got the end of it as we were driving oop north on Saturday morning. It cooled everything off though. Not so sticky now. Kathy, hope you are not wishing you had not left your coat behind! Claudia, don't work
too hard on the site you know. A little bit of
Drought still on, I see!

Nice find Emily
This morning I started to listen to Desert Island Discs on Radio 4. For those who don't know this a progamme that has been going on for about 40 years where a well-known person is interviewed and gives their life story whilst choosing 7 records to take to an imaginary desert island. This morning it was Ruby Wax. I had to go out soon after her first choice (People are Strange by The Doors) so missed the rest. I shall try to listen to the rest tomorrow on the pc, be interesting to see if she has anything to say about Alan and his direction of her one woman show etc.
O/T I just finished watching the most amazing set by Brian Wilson at
Glastonbury. The Beach Boys were my idols in my teens and I had tears streaming
down my face the whole session. I never saw Brian but saw the rest of them
several times and met them a couple of times too. Sadly Brian is the only one

What is your location? Canada Comments: Laurie, check out the imdb for Kelly MacDonald's filmography. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0531808/
I thought The Girl In the Cafe was wonderful! Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald were terrific.
I hadn't heard the statistics before, like about how many children die every three seconds, etc. The numbers are absolutely mind-boggling.
If only we really could get governments to listen...

Comments:
Well, as I said last night this dozy pillock missed the first 14 mins of The
Girl in the Cafe
Whether it made people think about the problem who hadn't already is something I don't know. He may have been preaching to the converted. As a romantic story though it was superbly acted by all the cast and just made me an even bigger Bill N fan. I have always loved Ken Stott too so I had no complaints.
My husband who didn't fancy the girl (a standard criteria as to whether he watches a movie or not!) watched it through without much comment then this morning in Sainsbury's car-park completely out of the blue says "So do you think Bill Nighys character lost his job then?"!!! Men!
What is your location? Vermont Comments: The Girl in the Cafe was an excellent film! I hope this film will bring more attention to the Make Poverty History campaign, and I believe it will. It was very education and entertaining at the same time. Both Bill Nighy and Kelly McDonald did an excellent job. Kelly McDonald looks familiar to me but I can't remember what other films she's been in. ***Spoiler*** Claudia, as you said, you could just feel Lawrence's pain in the film. I found myself physically cringing when he was in the airport waiting and crying after he puts her on the plane home. ***End of Spoiler***
Comments: I loved GitC - BIll Nighy was wonderful as usual and he does work well with Kelly McDonald.
Claudia I have always enjoyed Ken Stotts work - He has a magnetism on screen that makes it hard for me to tear my eyes away from him.
I was pleased that Richard Curtis didnt *sweeten* it too much and let the facts speak for themselves.
What is your location? GA Comments: Sorry Laura, The Girl in the Cafe is related to AR only by means that it deals with extreme poverty in Africa and the Make Poverty History campaign. But AR is not in it whatsoever.
Its actually a film which stars Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald. All the excitement I had for this film was not wasted! I think it combined drama, comedy, and education like I've never seen it before.
Major Spoilers (but I just can't help it!)
Bill Nighy was perfect in his role. The viewer can actually feel his pain of loneliness along with his doubts as to how Gina could possibly be interested in him. That long painful wait at the airport was gruesome. How many of us has had that sort of experience? *slowly raises hand*.
Also, early in the film, I hope that after Lawrence put so much sugar in his tea that someone switched the cups before poor Bill Nighy sipped it! LOL I almost got sick just thinking about it!
The towel scene was hilarious!
On to Kelly MacDonald. I've caught her in a few things and I have to say, she has never failed me. Gina is the perfect match for Lawrence. He has the knowledge and background of the problem and Gina has the ability to soak it up and put it out there to the people that count.
AFNH suggested that I notice Ken Stott who played the Chancellor of the Excheque. I have seen him in a few things before but he really caught my attention in this film. I just wanted to smack his character and say "Instead of fuming about Gina's "spout offs" embrace them and put her ability to work in a way that will get the attention of those that count!" Gina was certainly determined to get out what she had to say--for the children and for her man!
End of Spoilers
I found this article, Geldof, Bono would be proud of Girl in the Cafe , and am thrilled that CNN will be jumping in. Maybe we can finally get some real news instead of the stylings of the michael jackson farce of a trial! I can't wait to see this special.
Comments: sorry,I didn't understand: is this "the girl in the cafč" related to AR?
I was bored, so I made a music video with scenes from Bob Roberts (AR of course)

Yes, Mephisto! I knew I had seen that gorgeous leather jacket before!
Thank you AFNH for those Venice Film Festival pics! That second one does beg for a caption, doesn't it? Lucy's is perfect! Its not very often we see The Man in light color suits and I have to admit that one is very nice looking. There was one he wore during the NY PL run that was dreadful but this one makes up for it completely!
Excellent question, Dee! Do any of our Canadian friends get this Terri Hart show? If so, will you keep your eyes and tellys pealed for her?
I've been going through my email this morning and of course after sifting through the AR alerts began reading the Nighy alerts. 99% of his have been about TGitC (which I can't wait to see tonight!). Anyway, he said something in one of the articles that made me think of AR (go figure!). The article is from The Mirror--Exclusive: Bill Nighy on Poverty and Passion and here is the blurb that reminded me of AR:
[Interviewer brought up BN's 23 year "partnership" with Diana Quick]
"No one got married in my day," Nighy explains. "It's fashionable again now and you have to if you have children because of the tax laws." So, with Mary in mind, he'll be walking up the aisle sometime himself, then? "Er, I don't know," he replies, smiling.
When the question of why AR and Rima Horton never married has come up in the past, this is why I've often thought. I know...just speculation but in my mind, the most reasonable.
While on the subject of Bill Nighy, he will be in another film due out in August that looks very interesting starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Wiesz. There are only a couple whisps of BN in the trailer but it still looks good nonetheless. The Constant Gardener

Maybe it was just me, but I thought the first question was stupid -- and AR did a great job answering it! I should've stowed away in Kathy's suitcase!
Here's one from the Live Journal that I haven't seen before. We hardly ever see AR without a jacket (or giant pheasant sweater!) -- those bare arms make me...THUD!!

Comments: The price of the Karamazov programme is nuts, isn't it? Love all the new pics (there are so many surfacing at the moment). 'Specially loved the bearded Slope! Here's a couple more pics from Mephisto ![]() ![]()
Comments: After years of browsing at Ebay, that price for the Karamazov program isn't surprising. The sellers only get what some people are able and willing to spend. That's why I think of Ebay as a great place to research AR items, not necessarily buy them! And it always distresses me to see all the fake items being sold and occasionally bought. It's definitely "buyer beware!"
I hope eveyone is keeping cool--it seems to be hot everywhere these days!

The first bid was for 100 GBP, and there's still more than five days left. How much are they going to drive up the price on this? Wait, it looks like the first five bids were made by the same person. Maybe somebody's deliberately driving up the price? I'm sure a lot of you folks know how Ebay works better than I do.

That is a very interesting question. I have no doubt whatsoever that both man could pull off either role. It would have been fun to see AR camping it up, wouldn't it? I could definitely see it. But I think I like the way it was played out better, though. Hmmm, I think I'll watch Blow Dry tonight!

Knackered does mean exhausted but when I was a girl (Many years ago) it was quite rude because it meant sexually exhausted from the word knacker meaning testicles. Nowadays it is just general exhaustion!LOL

Its a shame they didn't seem to do their homework.

Emily, thank you for that EBay link to the BK program. Now I know that AR

Brothers Karamazov Spoilers:
He's the one who realizes that he is indeed a sensualist and that eventually he will give in to his baser, Karamazov nature, but in the meantime, he is doing what is in his own best interests. His views on God and life reflect the intellectualism of the age, although he eventually has a crisis of conscience that sends him over the edge.

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson will be screening at the Paramount Theatre (Courtney Pl, Wellington CBD) from the 27-31 of July, as part of the Wellington Film Festival. This is a film that AR had a small part in (I think the clip is on the 'Film' page of this site - thanks to Claudia!). What is your location? Vermont Comments: Martha, I was near Paddington Sation and Hyde Park. My hotel was in Sussex Gardens. I did see the Kennsington Gardens and Albert Memorial also but didn't get to The Archer. When I walked in the park I wondered if AR takes strolls there often when he's home. Wouldn't that be great just bumping into him in the park? Someone on this GB pointed out that the picture of AR standing on the statue in the kilt was actually part of the Albert Memorial. After I read that had to look at my pictures of the memorial and look again!

Do you think they curled his hair every night or do you think he had a "body wave" done? The man certainly looks attractive in curls.
I'm sorry, but the A&C pictures just ooze chemistry. Funny how there can be such a discrepancy between the live action and a still photo. Judging from those photos, I would think that A&C was one HOT play. The reviews, however, state something entirely different.

Have a great one!Bluebeatbabe - ET was outside No. 10 to publicise Action Aid, one of her (and Alan's) charities. Thankfully she didn't have Blair's rictus grin! Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is on my (ever-growing) reading list , it is lying by my bed as I type. As it is a hardback and rather heavy (not good for reading on the way to work), I was going to leave it until my hols to read it, but that may now be superceded by HP&THBP! Wish there were more hours in the day...... As we're talking beards at the mo, had a bit of a rummage and found this one from the time of LLD (yes that is Lindsay Duncan with him in the other one). Just so everyone knows, the Die Hard section of the text is entitled :
Race, Class, and Gender in the Male Rampage Film. It is discussing those
subjects while using the Die Hard (mostly the first movie) and Lethal Weapon
series' as examples. Most of it discusses McClane's actions as he is, really,
the only one "rampaging" in the film. As Bruce Willis does in the majority of
his films.
The only metion of AR directly is the introduction of the plot where Hans is
described as "suave and impeccable tailored." But there are a couple other discussions that talk about Hans/McClane interactions.
But, if any of you are still interested, the book is called The New American Cinema. Was printed by Duke University Press in 1998. It's a collection of essays edited by Jon Lewis (my teacher), whose name is the only one on the cover.
Also, unfortunately there are no pictures of our dear Hans in the book. Suprisingly, since most of the references are to Die Hard yet both of the Die hard series pictures are from 2 and 3. I believe 3....With a Vengence is 3 right? I haven't seen 2 or 3 but somehow picked out the scrubby BW as one from a Die Hard movie when flipping through.
Sorry if I got people's hopes up unnecessarily high. To me, what's there is enough to get excited about since I am interested in that sort of reading.
And of course there is reference to:

I love the

What is your location? GA Comments: That picture from Hyde Park is gorgeous, Elaine! So peaceful looking.
Simon Schama, eh? Well, maybe if AR is back hopefully kathy will catch a glimpse somewhere!
Speaking of Simon Schama. I've been averaging about 1 disk a month from his History of Britian from NetFlix. I really like the way he narrates the series. He makes history a bit more fun to watch.

Just back from London - sat in Hyde Park this morning before catching my train.
Was beautiful:
Met Kathy and dragged her all over the place after we decided not to stay for the readthrough which was due to start in the Rada bar. At one point we were strolling through Soho past some very dubious establishments, and spotted Simon Schama on Oxford Street - but alas, no AR (although I think he's home now).
Jonathon Strange etc looks a wonderful book. Must put it on my list! I have glanced at it in Smiths or somewhere but never really picked it up. Thanks for the links.
Wonderful weather right now but of course, all that will change on Friday, when we are taking our tents up north when Jamie goes to see his new college. Just our luck!
That beared pic with the girl - shame about the horns coming out of his lovely curls!

According to JonathanStrange.com, Christopher Hampton (from LLD fame) has been hired to adapt the book for the screen. After checking this site out, I think I might just see if my library has it on hand. Side note: The drawing of Dr. Strange on this site reminds me of Prince Charles.
I'll have to look at the Burmese video later, Sue. But I've already sent my email! Its so hard to believe that in the year 2005 that anyone is being held captive simply because of their political beliefs. Its so sad.

Is this the image of Alan you were talking about Bluebeatbabe, and im right there with you all on the beard. I love it, rather its Hans, George, Ed, Gregori, Anthony or just everday Alan its so sexy to me.
Comments: I have been wanting to read that book for a while now but when I went to my local bookstore I found it was still only available in hardback. I think it is due out in paperback on 5th September. Slightly O/T, though it is one of Alan's causes, are there any Damien Rice fans here? Yesterday he and Lisa Hannigan released Unplayed Piano a single in support of the Free Aung San Suu Kyi 60th Birthday Campaign, a global initiative to free the Burmese Nobel Peace Prize recipient on her 60th Birthday. It's a beautiful song (like all his stuff) and all proceeds go to the campaign. Check out his Website and follow the link to ActionBurma Campaign. The video takes a while to download but it is worth it, and don't forget to send an e-mail!

Sheffield.UK Comments: Hi Ali-Pat, I have n't yet read Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell but did read an interesting interview with the author about possible film/casting and guess whose name kept popping up ? Yep, Our Alan ! and indeed seemed to appear top of the list ! So watch this space for future developments. This book is one I have had ear-marked to read for quire sometime. Beth, loved your 'bearded 'photo of Alan- IT IS DELICIOUS Claudia, I'm with you on the beard, hirsute Alan is positively scrummy. What was it Rod Stewart sang ... 'You wear it well...I.ve been trying to post a couple of photos avec beard, with no success today. the one with a young Lindsay Duncan, you know the one, with the curly hair and the hands doing their thing and another outside the theatre door- have you got them and could you post ? Saw Emma Thompson stood outside No.10 with Tony Blair- Do you think she really believes that she is the Prime Minister's sister ?!!! (Love Actually) or is life now imitating fiction?

Has anyone read the novel Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke? The only word I can use to describe it is "enchanting", almost like Harry Potter for grownups. If a film is ever made of this novel, there has to be a part in there somewhere for AR. Somewhere...
I have recently gone through all the old radio broadcasts of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I think I have put my finger on what the movie lacks. The radio shows were almost effortlessly funny, but it just feels like the movie works too hard at it. Strange thing, as all the talent involved in the film had such great potential. All I can say is that I only managed a few subdued giggles in the film, but listening to the radio shows has me laughing raucously nearly every other minute. Oh--and another thing. The radio Marvin sounds very much like AR's movie interpretation. Wonder if he was familiar with the radio shows, or if it was just incredible karma?
Have a great day everybody. Off now to see the eye doctor.

Juliet - that Hogwart's letter is a hoot! I especially liked the author's
"relief at having completed the inspection...as a number of
inspectors apparently have disappeared into thin air during previous
inspection." I love it! Whoever wrote this is obviously a fan and
has read the books. There's one thing I can't stand: That's to read
an article or review by someone who hasn't read the books or hasn't a clue what
the story is really about. I'm getting very excited about the next book!
I, too, will be anxiously awaiting my Saturday delivery from Amazon on the 16th. Last time, I had the book in my hands by 10:30am on the morning of it's release....I was very impressed. Let's hope they are as efficient as last time.
I don't think the next film, Goblet of Fire, will have very much Snape
time, because the book doesn't. But the scenes where he does appear in the
book are all crucial scenes. Like Elaine said, it depends on what story
lines they choose to leave in for the film. The next book, however, I am
counting on to have lots of Snape! It just has to.....he's such an
important, pivotal character. When I get to a part of the book that has
Snape in it, I get almost as excited as if I were watching Alan on the screen.
Admit it....weren't the Occlumency and Snape's Worst Memory
chapters the absolute best from the last book???
All right....I'll calm down now. Sorry....
Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! To Kathy....have a wonderful, enjoyable, fantastic, trip and keep us all posted as to what you are doing. We are all counting on you. Since the highlight of my day consists of taking out the garbage, I will look forward to hearing about your many adventures. Have a great time!

Comments: Just found this on Waterstone's site about their HBP "queue" party: Entertainment starts from 6pm and as the excitement mounts, customers will be treated to appearances from Hagrid and Professors McGonagall, Snape and Dumbledore who will delight with magic and entertainment. I doubt that these are the actual actors as I can't imagine AR "delighting with magic and entertainment" although he has plenty of magic for my delight! As I'm working, my copy will be coming from Amazon. I can only hope that the Post Office have thought about the millions of copies they will have to deliver (on a Saturday, too!) and will have made some kind of plan to cope. I think it may be a forlorn hope!
What is your location? Too early to know Comments: Alfan, that's the scene that I am looking forward to and hoping that they will keep in. I feel that they must because it is an important point in the book. I've just re-read GoF and Snape is not in the book all that much relative to other characters so it is going to be inevitable that he won't be in the film for long, but AR seems to have been filming GoF for a while, on and off. All Snape's appearances in the book are quite important but being such a big book, it depends what story lines they choose to leave out. I've heard that the "nightshirt" scene is not in which surprises me because I would have thought it was quite important to show that Barty Crouch is in the castle and searching Snape's office. We can but wait and see. Less than a month beforee HBP now and I can't wait! I give good warning now - I will not be online until I finish reading it because I don't want to pick up any spoilers because whatever warnings you put in, someone will always ignore them!

What is your location? Indiana Comments: I just found this on Yahoo News. Sorry if it's old news to all of you -- sometime I'm a bit behind!
Corrie family tours nation raising money to rebuild Palestinian homes (June 16, 2005) When 23-year-old Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer, she was protesting the impending demolition of a Palestinian home.
More than two years later, Craig and Cindy Corrie say they are trying to
carry on their daughter's work. "Rachel, when she was in Gaza,
wrote to us about her own thinking in terms of making a commitment to that
place," Cindy Corrie said. "She didn't want to feel guilty when she left,
knowing that she could come and go as she pleased. When she was killed, those
words resonated with us, and they continue to resonate with me."
What is your location? Indiana Comments: Sabine & Alfan -- Thanks for the reminder. I'd better start re-reading the books so I'm ready for the new one! It sounds like Snape may be in the Goblet of Fire only long enough to flash his dark mark and sneer. At least we can hope that he may have a slightly bigger film role in The Order of the Phoenix.
What is your location? Canada Comments: Dee, the book in which you refer is Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix. (book 5). Snape under orders from Dumbledore is to teach Harry Occlumency to stop or block any intrusion from outside sources into the mind (meaning Voldemort). Now, Snape is a skilled occulmens because Voldemort ( me thinks DD too) is a skilled Ligilimens that can extract memories and emotions from others minds.Voldemort can invade Harry's mind and to stop this from happening Snape must teach Harry Occulmency but before he does he puts thoughts and memories into a pensieve, a memory holder if you will. Now, as far as appearances by Snape in Goblet of Fire, i have read that he will not appear any more than he has in Chamber of Secrets, even less. But none the less he is an important person and there is an important scene that i look forward to that they cannot simply ignore,,,,,,,,,,the exposing of his dark mark.
What is your location? GA Comments: Dee - The scene you are talking about is from Order of the Phoenix.
What is your location? Indiana Comments: Question for those reading the HP books (possible spoiler): It's been awhile since I read the last couple books and I'm getting them mixed up. Which book has the scene where Snape is teaching Harry how to block Valdmort's thoughts, and when he puts his memory thread into the bowl Harry sneaks a peak? Is that Goblet of Fire (the one that's coming out in November)?
I'm wondering how big of a role AR will have in the new movie. Seems odd that we've seen publicity shots of everyone else (including the new kids and the nasty new headmistress), but none of our lovable Snape.

Alan Rickman. My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun. Sonnet 130. This sonnet just makes me laugh. It seems to be the rudest one - it even accuses her of having reeking breath - but in the last two lines its revealed to be profoundly loving, and I love that contradiction. To say that the sonnets are romantic makes them sound like a kind of Hallmark card. Theyre very passionate, powerful, complicated, beautiful and tough. Theyre much more than verbal Muzak. Am I romantic? I prefer to speak other peoples romantic words than give away any of my own. Love is what it is: a million different things - whether its in relation to your parents, your lover, your dog, whatever.

Worn out now after the hottest weekend of the year - what a time to spend all day Saturday sweltering in an NBC suit whilst peering through clouds od CS gas at blokes flinging Fuller's Earth all over themselves. But Wales was trying to look nice instead of the usual wet pall hanging over the hills so it could have been worse. and as a certain person is half Welsh, I will try not to be too disparaging about the place!
Emerys, (is that a Welsh name?), those pics you found are brilliant. Look like the contact sheet for that particular photo shoot. I would love to see the bigger, unadulterated version of the top three. Yes, sue, why did they crop them?
Claudia, the
top two of those pics were taken at the NFT showing of that silent movie that

after the TMD thing at the NFT and later pics show him with the shirt tucked in

Sue, enjoy U2! I can imagine they must be pretty good live. Just read that article about bliar and his "networking". I found the bit about him inviting the Italian and French visitos and then "co-incidentally" getting yet another free holiday VERY EEnteresting. Where are all the true Labour supporters and party members on that list?
Juliet, good point about AR's fellow dinner guests. I did not realise BK was like that? Bit much when the man does ads for Sky movies and stuff. At least AR does not need to do that kind of thing. As for R & J, wonder if they asked AR to be a guest on their AWFUL show? Hope he told them to bog off! "Simpering" is a really good word to describe them!

Have finally made it back here after three weeks of exams. They were awful and I'm trying to remember why I left a well-paid job to become a student and live in stress, poverty and the ever pervasive smell of pizza and alcohol (which emanate from the rooms of my flatmates). But anyway, I'm getting off-topic...
What an amazing selection of photos! To the person who posted the spread eagled/crotch shot photo of Alan - thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I checked on here during a moment of extreme stress, and when I saw that photo, I was suddenly filled with happiness, drive, direction and energy. hehe...that could sooo be taken the wrong way! So I'll just leave it as it is! Also thanks to everybody else who has posted photos and links to various websites. I've had a great couple of hours checking everything out.
Marlina - I think that AR and Emma Thompson are just friends. I understand how you would get that impression from some of their photos though. But here's something to keep in mind - I am extremely affectionate with my very close friends, including male friends. And they are very affectionate back. We have our own little in-jokes and everthing. On some occasions, I have even been mistaken for the girlfriend of a few of them. Maybe this is the same thing with Alan and Emma.
And since it seems like everbody else has contributed something to The Alan Rickman Draught Aid, I thought I'd make a contribution too. http://www.handbag.com http: target=_blank>http://www.handbag.com/gossip/celebrityinterviews/alanrickman/ Here is an interview that AR did circa-LA. I really enjoy this interview, simply because I would love to ask him the first question.

What is your location? arkansas Comments: Well guys, I'm going to say good-bye for awhile. I have to leave at 3am to get to the airport as early as they want you these days, and have a million little things to do. I'll be back Aug 2.
I will not have a computer so will have to search out an internet cafe or I might have internet withdrawals! Hopefully I can pop in from time to time.
I know I'll have a great time...If I see AR (haha) I'll say hi to him from all of us! It's supposed to be 87 degrees when I get to London so I took my coat out of my suitcase!

What is your location? GA Comments: Ah,
that's a difficult question, kathy. There is no interview that I can recall
where he spoke in depth about himself. So.......my initial guess
is that since he is such an artistic person that maybe yes he did experience an
awkward stage in his life at some point. I'm very glad that he
overcame it though!
Thanks again Laura! Those links are great!
Tess! Welcome back! It been a while since you posted. Thanks for the Russian picture site. There are a couple I don't recall ever seeing.

What is your location? Indiana Comments: Laura & Emerys -- Thanks for providing that site, Laura. I couldn't open it, so I'm thrilled that Emery shared!
I agree -- the untucked shirt and bare feet are so adorably rumpled and sexy! Squeeeee!! Just a couple days ago we were discussing if AR knows what he's doing when he poses. The man may not completely understand his appeal, but he sure knows how to work it!
My question is: Do you think there was ever a time in his youth when he felt awkward and unattractive (and he outgrew it or overcame it), or has he always had the charisma and inner confidence that we all love?
Comments: I'll bet he's had "stage door jills" since he first put himself on stage!
Comments:
I'm sorry....the untucked shirt, no shoes..adorable face, no wonder women drool
over him...
What is your location? GA Comments: Wow! There is definitely a need for larger versions of those pics! Thanks for posting them Emerys!
Comments: I was wondering about something, for a photo shoot do you think they ask the model, Alan in that case, to bring some of his own clothes, you know: " yes dear, next saturday 2pm and bring a white shirt, a jean, 2 different black jumpers, a black silk boxer short, and ehh errrm no socks, thanks, see ya' " .
Comments: oh thank you Laura, there are some pure gems on this site!!
some are unknown to me, I beg for larger versions of these... please tell me they exist somewhere!! barefooted!Alan*sigh*
Comments: Or that should be Stevenson! My boss's "Stephen with a PH" is getting to me!
Comments: Just been having a browse around and found a couple of things of interest. First one has some techie information on how they filmed The Boggart in PoA. Our Man gets a mention. The other is a small interview with Anthony Minghella, and he talks about Juliet Stephenson, Alan Rickman and Michael Maloney and the making of Truly Madly Deeply.
What is your location? GA Comments: Dang it! Ringo Starr did a concert in Bryant Part this morning for Good Morning America and I missed recording it! Did anyone happen to catch it?

And thank you for the information, i know Alan is devoted to Rima.. the thing is.. Maybe it's only my stupid mind thinking.. Emma

Thanks for the piccies.. That's definietly Galaxy Quest era.. The hand gesture that Sigourney Weaver did is Galaxy Quest hand gesture for salute or something..
Love you all and thank you again for the information
What is your location? GA Comments: I've been meaning to mention this all morning but I am currently in the middle of watching the Robbie Coltrane series Cracker and I am enjoying it tremendously. I love that show! Its so nice to see RC as someone other than Hagrid. He's funny and adorable in it and I highly recommend it to crime show fans. Also, Barbara Flynn who plays Fitz's wife in the show is in it. BF is an AR alumni from Benefactors.
I did a little search and I find that Cracker is one of those series that the Americans picked up on and tried to duplicate. Another miserable failure, I might add.

Marlina, I hate to promise when I will have the Conan interview. I fully intended to have it up last weekend and real life stepped in. But I do hope to be able to work on it this weekend. I'm sorry its taking so long.

Ah, those infamous shopping pics. Most amazing thing is he actually got a Taxi to stop!
Now I really must go.....

Definitely GQ era....look SW is doing that hand thingie!
What is your location? Indiana Comments: Oh, and the shopping photo -- You never see AR on a excursion to the stores without a huge bag filled with goodies! I don't believe I've ever seen my husband come out of a store with anything that wouldn't fit into his pocket...unless it's a hardware store.
I want this man to take me shopping!

making here a search for alan rickman takes you to nothing. I typed for mistake
rickman rickman (twice) and I found many pics of him , 12 pages!
What is your location? Indiana Comments: Laura -- Thanks for the photos! I've never seen them before. Ay idea when/where were they taken? At first, I thought they were from the GQ time period - but Weaver was a blond then. Then I thought maybe they were recent (Snowcake) - but AR is blond/gray now.
Comments: Making a flying visit - off to Wales soon for boring "hurry up and wait" TA w/e that I need to do to earn money for my hol and new gas guzzler.
Thanks for all the pics, some I've seen, some I haven't. Laura from Italy, those
ones you found - was he practising for Madame Tussauds? Or maybe the latest
Littlewoods catalogue (do they still have those?)
Marlina, I think you've asked that before about AR and Emma T. They are just very good friends and have been for a long time. AR is devoted to Rima and there has never been a whiff of any scandal to do with any other women. For a lot of us, that is one of the reasons we admire him so because he's so unlike a lot of celebs who thrive on affairs and infidelity.
Kathy, see you soon! Hope you have a good journey.

What is your location? GA Comments: I always thought the ruler in that picture was...um...representative of something else.
What is your location? MI Comments: Emily, this is the article (sans photos) that is on eBay:
Festivals actually
changed my life - Rickman HARRY Potter actor Alan Rickman has told how Edinburgh festivals have delivered some of the seminal experiences of his working life. Nearly three decades ago, in his first appearance on an Edinburgh stage, Rickman appeared in the playwright John Barnes adaptation of Ben Jonsons play The Devil is an Ass. He was just out of drama school, and it was his first major part. Rickman, now an acclaimed stage and screen actor made famous for a new generation by his Harry Potter role, made a lightning visit to Edinburgh at the weekend to see the play Swansong, directed by his friend Conor McDermottroe. The two men are working on a film project together. He was hoping to catch actors Christian Slater and Frances Barber in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest, but the show has been delayed by Slater going down with chickenpox. "I was hoping to see Christian and Frances, but I think I will wait until hes better. We were in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves together," he said. The actor said he thought the Fringe had lost some of its "theatrical clout" in recent years due to the growing role of comedy shows. "Its reputation now is more about stand-up, which I find sad," he said. But he added: "Ive had some of the most profound theatrical experiences of my life up here. Scotland is inextricably tied up with my life." Rickman grew nostalgic when he drove past the university halls where he once stayed. "He has fond memories of doing shows here," McDermottroe said. "He tries to get up here for every Festival, even if he is not working." Rickman picked out two plays to see at the weekend: When the Bulbul Stopped Singing at the Traverse Theatre, and Fatboy, starring Mike McShane. He also worked with McShane on Prince of Thieves. Rickman first acted in Edinburgh in 1976, in a double bill at the Assembly Rooms. He played Friar Peter in Shakespeares Measure for Measure, and Wittipol in The Devil is an Ass. He would later describe his part in Jonsons play as his first major role. "It just defines the word theatre when you come to the Festival," he said. "Ive had amazing times here." Rickman recalled seeing the work of legendary Japanese director Yukio Ninagawa for the first time. Ninagawas Macbeth, set in feudal Japan, electrified the Festival in 1985. "There are things that change your working life when you see a production," Rickman said. In 1991, Rickman was fast becoming a film star, partly on the back of Prince of Thieves. It was after seeing Rickman as the villain in Die Hard, and as the ghost of an amusing lover in Truly, Madly, Deeply that Ninagawa cast him in another Edinburgh production. Rickman appeared in The Tango at the End of Winter, with Ninagawa as director, at the Kings Theatre. "That was the last time [he appeared on an Edinburgh stage], and it seems long ago," he said. Recently, Rickman has become one of the most memorable figures in the series of Harry Potter films as the flamboyantly sinister Professor Severus Snape. It is the latest in a long line of villainous screen roles hes played - including the Sheriff of Nottingham. He said he would be starting work next month on his part in the latest to be filmed, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. "I havent reported for duty yet. Ive no idea even where the locations are. My contract doesnt give out much." Rickman wouldnt be drawn on his plans for any future Harry Potter films. "Its looking at one movie at a time from here on. It just depends what else you are up to." Last year, Rickman was in Love Actually, along with Emma Thompson, with whom he also starred in The Winter Guest. Rickman and McDermottroe met on the set of Quigley Down Under in Australia about ten years ago. "I was an actor, playing a character employed by Alan to kill Tom Selleck," he said. "We were in Alice Springs in the middle of Australia for about ten weeks. It was not high art." They renewed their friendship when McDermottroe later moved to London to work at the National Theatre and start writing. Rickman is executive producer on McDermottroes film script Waiting for the Healer. It has backing from the Irish Film Board, and Edinburghs Moonstone International - linked to the Sundance Institute in the United States - has taken it on for development. Swansong is a one-man play set in 1960s Ireland. Its story is launched when a young woman leaves the country to have an abortion. Rickman gave the play glowing praise, saying it had all of the Irish literary inheritance about it. "Its incredibly powerful, and has brilliant, brilliant acting," he said
Comments: Saw this listing on EBay. What was this newspaper? What the heck is "Waiting for the Healer" and "Swansong"? Was this the interview he did at the Edinburgh Fringe last summer?

Comments: Hope you enjoyed your PowerPoint course, Juliet! Does this mean we are going to get some jazzy AR presentations in the near future? I do hope so! (Nothing like bit of The Man to take you away from everything!). The Sun? It should think itself lucky to be hung on a rusty nail! I think the only one worse is probably the Sunday Sport. Now the front cover of that "newspaper" is usually so bad, I could never bear to even go near a copy, never mind get past the front page - urgh! Nearly as bad as the Daily Mail **snort**
What is your location? UK Comments: Feeling a bit more like today, went to a half-day PowerPoint training course at work which was booked months ago, nothing like using the brain a bit to lift the spirits.
Laura, if you put AR's name into the search facility on the linked page, it will bring up all 6. It always makes me smile (ironically) when it says on the back page "registered as a newspaper with the Post Office". Comic, rag, scandel sheet, good old fashioned loo paper cut up into 4inch squares and hung on a rusty nail on the back of the door, but NEVER a newspaper, LOL.
What is your location? Italy Comments: Juliet- how are you feeling today? I hope you get better and better! Laura

What is your location? GA Comments: Thank you for that site and the pic, Emily. I've never seen that one before either. Here's another one I don't think I've ever seen before. There is either a cropped version of this or another picture from the same funeral of just AR and Ruby Wax. Never knew Rima Horton was there AND I always thought it was Dennis Potter's funeral. Instead, its John Diamond's March 4, 2001.
How creepy can The Sun be? Sue, it might take a full blown shower!
Comments: Emily, do not be surprised! After all we are talking The Sun here, one of most sleaziest and tacky tabloid papers! You can get a taste of The Sun Here. Just remember to wash your mouth out to get rid of the aftertaste
Comments: Found this picture on the Sun and News of the World picture gallery. I've never seen it before. It's AR arriving at Westminster Abbey for the funeral of the writer Hugo Young in November 2003. What I can't believe is that the Sun is selling reprints of this photo - you can get it on mouse pads, mugs, posters. I mean, look at his face! He's sad! Does this look like something to put on a mug?
Anyway, if you want to look through the Sun's gallery of photos for sale, http://www.thesun.co.uk/Sales/goods/0,,244-4,00.html
There are six altogether of AR. Oddly, three of them were taken at funerals.

I first became aware of how great an actor Alan is, when I recognized him in the first Harry Potter movie, but the one, which made me actually a fan of his work was S & S, other favourites are "Robin Hood" and "Blow Dry". I haven't seen several of his movies yet though.
Comments:
Juliet, sweetie , I'm so sorry...Too bad the good doctor wasn't there to kiss it
and make it all better... (email me if you like would love to talk)
I was an HP fan long before the movies, loved Snape--he was perfect--not often is a movie character that satisfying. One day my kids were watching TV and I heard Snapes voice (I still didn't know his real name) and I asked what they were watching...Dogma.. so I watched, had to get the HP movie box out to find out what Snapes name was to see if it was the same person (yes!) so went online to search him out. Then watched TMD and WG.....I remember WG coming out because I love Emma Thompson, but it was either just before or just after my husband died and I knew I couldn't see that particular movie then. Even years after I bawled my eyes out. I was hooked.
My husband was sick for most of the 90's so I missed pretty much all the movies
at that time. When Die Hard came out I'm sure my husband saw it. He
liked Bruce Willis and "shoot 'em up" kinds of films--I don't so probably passed
on it. So....I missed out on all the excitement until Harry Potter but I love
catching up!!!
What is your location? Canada Comments: Forgive me but im quoting without the movie so i might be wrong.
I was interested in " wait a minute, Robin Hood steals money from my pocket forcing me to hurt the people,,,,,,,,,,and they love him for it?" , " thats it, cancel all kitchen scraps for orphans and leapers, no more mercifall beheadings,,AND CALL OFF CHRISTMAS"!
but absolutly intoxicated with "there will be no foolish wandwaving or silly incantations in this class, as such i dont expect many of you to appreciate the fine art of potion making, however, for those select few, i can TEACH YOU TO BEWITCH THE MIND, ENSNARE THE SENSES, I CAN TEACH YOU TO BOTTLE FAME, BREW GLORY AND EVEN STOPPER DEATH!" ( specially that line) "Then again, maybe some of you have come to Hogwarts with abilities so formidable that you feel confident enough to ' not pay attention'. 'Mr. Potter, our new celebrity, tell me what would i get if i mixed powdered root of asphedel with an infusion of wormwood? Dont know?, well lets try again, where Mr Potter would you look if you wanted to find a beozor?, and what is the difference between wolfsbane and monkshood? "Pity, apparently fame isnt everything.
So i went out and literally had me an Alan weekend, rented every one i could, watch them all and literally fell in love with his acting and became a huge fan of him, then without even seeing many of them ( they were hard to find, CL, AABA and many more) i went and bought his whole collection. As far as performance well they are all different to me in for different reasons,, i am serious when i say i cannot pick a favorite, i love all his characters even if i didnt like the movie. Not one of his movies is the same, he is known for his bad guy roles ( ok, Hans and George and Snape) but the Davids, Gregori,Alfred, Eamon,Sinclair, Lucas, Phil, Jamie,Harry Elliot, Franz, P.T, interrogator, Dr Lazereth, Metatron,Brandon---to me are just as good.
i can literally quote any line from any movie he has done, and to be honest, it drives my friends crazy, and i love it.
Comments: Oh dear Juliet, even if he couldn't have found the vein I am sure "Dr.Blalock" would have kept your mind off it!!
I went with a group of the *mum gang* to see S&S at the flix. I distinctly remember coming out saying "You can stuff Willoughby! The Colonel's the man for me!" I sort of forgot him but did ask for the video for Xmas and watched it a couple of times. Then I must have watched it in 2000 cos a couple of days later I saw the in Demand video on MTV and said "Whoah that's the guy from S&S I saw the other day!" The rest as they say is history!!
What is your location? GA Comments: Ohhh
Juliet!
Here's another of the good doctor that might cheer you up.
Don't ya just love that slightest of grins?
What is your location? UK Comments: BTW, it was S&S did it for me, have been on a fantastic voyage of discovery ever since!
What is your location? UK Comments: I tell you, I could have done with AR/Blalock and his hands today, went for a "routine" CT scan, normal procedure before starting chemo. They need to put this gooey dye stuff into a vein under pressure, and, apparently, I have small, fragile veins, well I am such a delicate, little thing (not!). Finally got there on the 4th attempt, 3 collapsing veins later. All goes well after that until my left foot (site of attempt No 3) comes up like an egg, so now I am sitting here with a very tight bandage around it with my foot at pelvis level. Ok, so maybe "Al" wouldn't have done any better, but at least the scenary would have been better, LOL.
What is your location? GA Comments: I went to the cinema with my Mother to see Kevin Costner in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. When the Sheriff rode up on his horse, my jaw dropped to the floor and Kevin who? My Mother was amazed that I didn't know who AR was and informed me that he was that sexy Hans Gruber in Die Hard which she had already seen a half a dozen times!
Comments: To me it was Robin Hood Prince of Thieves...Loved the way he played the sherrif! Saw Die Hard...But he really got me with RHPoT!!!
What is your location? Vermont Comments: Gissing Girl, I'm
with you. Sense & Sensibility was the one that made me notice Alan and my
favorite movie is An Awfully Big Adventure also. I also bought Close My Eyes at
the same time that I bought AABA and I think right now that is my second
favorite.
What is your location? UK Comments: The film that started it all of for me was Sense and Sensibility. My friend and I used to go to the movies every week and if there was nothing on with anyone we wanted to see in it like Patrick Swayze or Daniel Day Lewis we would take it in turn to choose something to see. That particular week there was nothing on and as a last resort we chose S&S. When Colonel Brandon hit the screen we looked at each other and said "who's that?" It's been all down hill since then.
My favourite film though is "An Awfully Big Adventure". I love the way he just stands on screen for at least five minutes and says nothing, but the expressions on his face are priceless.
What is your location? Michigan Comments:
Laura--I'm not sure which AR movie started it all for me. I remember
seeing "Die Hard" in the theater, and thinking Hans was cute. I saw "Robin
Hood" in the theater, and found myself cheering for the Sheriff. (Both movies
were ones my husband wanted to see, and took me along.) When my daughter
dragged me against my will to see the second Harry Potter, I really thought
Snape was adorable. Then I did some research, and couldn't believe
it was all the same person. He's such a great actor, he can really change
his persona. SO talented!! Now of course I've seen everything of his
I could possibly get my hands on. I think my favorite is Truly Madly
Deeply. If I would have seen that one first, it would have been the one
that started it all!! Sorry to ramble on! ~Julie
What is your location? Italy Comments: How long have you all been AR fans? what was the movie that "started" all for you?
I watched Closet Land without the possibility of subtitles, so I didn't understand so much, mostly M.Stowe's dialogue, she speaks easier than AR for me: I liked the movie even if I'm used to more action and less speaking. I have coming in my mind the part where AR ask MS about who's the rooster...it was strong as impact. I liked january man, even if I thought there was more of AR. Anyway I think it's not one of his best roles...I can't fit him in the role of painter. He's great as always but I just can't see it as natural, if my words make sense. What do you think?
I'm impressed by all these photos; he's not only a great actor but also a very fascinating man with interesting expressions

Oh sorry Natasxx, I couldn't open that link earlier so didn't know that was the

I do like a new pic to work on though!!

Welcome Fay! I'm so glad you joined us! Thanks to everyone for responding about the Mesmer script. Maybe something will come up in at least one of the languages you listed.
YAY Alfan and Hikity! Your image posts were perfect! Thanks for sharing. Hikity--we don't mind if you post pics from time to time.
AFNH, your vision of poor MP with that pile of letters is almost heartbreaking! *grin*
Dee, that book sounds interesting. I think I'll have a looksie tomorrow when I go to the library. I'm also hoping to find Nancy Grace's new (and first) book, Objection! too.
Wowzers, Laura! You have a broad range of his characters to watch. Congrats on finally getting them. Please post your thoughts about them, if you will. I hope Dark Harbor and Close My Eyes will come along soon.
Natasxxx, thank you so much for that pic! Its funny how these new photos are popping up lately.
Yall know I have to be decorate this place up with the new pic.

Comments: Ooh, so many loverly pics. My fave has to be Mesmer and all the ladies. That one tells a truth we all recognize. Thinking
about Mesmer, I was wondering what had happened to Amanda Ooms. Judging by
google, she has had an * interesting * career since M.
Google brought up one of her (I guess tamer) films being shown soon at the NFT,
and also Unforgivable Blackness, that Ken Burns docu in which AR voices 2
sentences. So you folks in or near London could catch it, if 2 sentences by AR
and an interesting subject give you your jollies. I shall not attempt to make a link, since my last attempt was a disaster. Thanks for the cleanup, Claudia or Sabine. http://www.bfi.org.uk/showing/nft/events/index.php

Elaine, Maybe if we shout loud enough he will hear us and do another play!
Am off to do last minute errands, etc.
Comments: Kathy, that's interesting about Bristol Uni archives.Bristol is about an hour away from me but how to get access? You know, I went to school with a guy who then went on to Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and now is regularly seen on TV and the stage. Some old school friends went up to see a play he was in and all got together with him after the show. They are hoping to go and do that again next time he is in a show so perhaps I should go too, - just in case he knows a certain fellow actor......
Sue, I can't help it but I love the "Elyot" hair cut. Not keen on the early
colour changes but the cut is divine! I love seeing all those stage door pics.
WILL WE EVER SEE HIM IN A STAGE PLAY AGAIN? (Sorry for shouting.

Is it o.K. with you, if I put some pics in the album from time to time? (There a two more - one as Brandon) Sonora, I once read that Alan answers to letters - now, why don't you write him (handwriting!! fountain pen...) - you might get one back.
this photo from the S&S premiere is gorgeous and so snapy (no, not brooding) MESMER : I try to find a German version if this is helpful. Does the new DVD not have subtitles?? (amanzon.com; less than 3$)That's one great thing here: nearly all DVDs have several languages and subtitels. One more photo????
I am off the the
Globe tonight, see you
Comments: sonoma - his early work is so murky, isn't it? Sounds a great idea (cheers, Claudia!) to ask Melanie Parker about them, though. I can just see her now, staggering into Alan's dressing room barely able to see over a huge pile of photos she's carrying in her arms! "And where were you when these were taken, Alan?" Yep - would have liked to see Annie the Barmaid myself!
What is your location? Indiana Comments: Julie = Such a lovely photo of Balack embracing his daughter! I love the expression on his face.
This AR drought has been going on for far too long... When we finally get news, we're all going to explode like those French women in the Mesmer photo! Do we even know what continent the man's on? Still in North America, hidden away in Canada? Alfan - you don't have AR chained in your basement, do you?
OT - I just finished reading a wonderful little gem called "Being Dead is No Excuse: the Southern Ladies Guide to Planning the Perfect Funeral Dinner". I giggled myself silly - PLUS, it's filled with excellent recipes fit for a crowd. It's probably available at your *ahem* local library if you want to check it out!
OT - I just
sprayed my pasty, liliy-white legs with sunless tanning spray so I could wear a
sundress to work. My legs are now a lovely shade of coral -- a bright
pinkish-orange that seems to be embedded in my pores!!!!!!

Comments: The Mesmer script was on ebay a few years back. I remember as a friend, who at the time was a Mesmer fanatic, was bemoaning that it was going for so much money. As I recall the seller stated that he rescued it from a skip with some photos when the office that had dealt with it was being cleared out! Have no idea who bought it though.
Further to my Private Lives challenge I show you this page. The cute little pastel at the bottom was the thing that reminded me of the photos, apparently it was drawn from the photo. Ring any bells?
What is your location? GA Comments: Juliet, I must admit that "Marvin who" had me scratching my head a moment but it finally came to me. LOL I can be slow sometimes!
Sue, your challenge does ring a bell with me. Its seems like I remember reading that account but I don't recall seeing any pics. Curiosity is killing the cat now! If anyone remembers this or has the pics......inquiring minds want to know!
I don't remember ever seeing that Mesmer group photo before
either. Hmmmm, a workout with the ARDLHGB crowd, eh? That image just
might need to make its way to the top of this page so people know what they are
getting into!
Emily, that pic of Blalock is gorgeous! So crisp and clear! And those hands!!! Thank you for posting. Woo Hoo!!!
Thanks Alfan. He does look like he did in the TatEoW era. I'm looking forward to seeing the other image. If you need help, don't hesitate to mail me.
Hmmm, I believe the only episode of King of the Hill I've ever watched is the Renaissance Fair. I'm not much into the animations. But I do have to admit that I catch Family Guy from time to time. Stewie is hilarious!
Hey Melissa!!! Welcome back. I hope you can stay awhile. October is just around the corner!!!!
I agree sonoma. If only we could ask AR about those plays...and so much more! Seriously though, Melanie Parker might be able to get an answer. I remember that someone sent the infamous copy of AR at the microphone to her and she answered back so maybe she would be inclined to find out about these play pics.
Now, I have a request that was sent by email that maybe someone will have an answer to. One of our Hungarian friends is interested in translating Mesmer into Hungarian so that more Hungarian fans can enjoy the film. Since it is easier for her to translate from written text, she is searching for a Mesmer script or transcript of Mesmer. I'm thinking that maybe there might not be a script available since I popped over to Ali-Pat's AR Fans Lifetime Reading Plan and found there is not one listed. Does anyone know if there is a transcript available somewhere. I know there are a few people that enjoy transcribing AR's films so I was thinking just maybe.....
Comments: Pam, Paul Bettany is playing the albino guy, Silas in The DaVinci Code see here on empireonline. I loved the book, a real page turner but I don't know why the Church has been getting it's knickers in a twist though. It is a novel after all, not supposed to be true. Still not sure about Tom Hanks but he is one of those actors I don't think I like then enjoy every picture I see of his! Jean Reno (he of the very attractive nose!) is in it and Ian McKellan so I am sure to go see it when it comes out.
What is your location? Massachusetts Comments: Kathy, Thanks for the information on the DaVinci Code. I am almost fnisihed with the book and tried to stay up to finish it. I went to bed around 2AM!! Its so good, full of intrigue and mystery as they search for the Holy Grail. (I am on Chapter 70-SPOLIERas They flee from France to England!! I cant waiit to get into it again today after work..Too bad we couldnt fit AR in there someplace?? Maybe the Albino could be played by the Malfoy fellow with his long white hair??? Just a though-Have a good one all-off to work-Pam
Comments:
Aww, you beat me to it Emily. I just opened my Google alerts and saw that and
got on to the case!LOL
Comments: AFNH, I think Sgt. Musgrave's Dance might be too early--according to Suzanne's resume, it was in 1962 at Latymer, plus AR played Annie the Barmaid (oh to have seen that!). I'm still thinking of A Man's A Man, because from what I gather, it was about some soldiers who shanghai a simple dock worker, trick him into playing their missing buddy, and turn him into a killing machine. If only we could just ask AR!
Comments: Ignore earlier post about Yahoo and Google alert tonight on a possible new movie with AR and Ned Beatty. There was bad reporting on the original story from the Minnesota newspaper, and then it got picked up and transmitted all over the Internet. I did a little Googling of my own and discovered that the movie stars Ned Beatty and Alan Cumming. You know, all those British guys named Alan are interchangeable. Alan Rickman, Alan Cumming, what's the difference?
What is your location? GA Comments: Sue: I'll open my heart to those hands any day.
Comments: This was in a Yahoo alert about Minnesota writers.
"Will Weaver is a fiction writer who teaches at Bemidji State University. His 1989 collection of short fiction, A Gravestone Made of Wheat & Other Stories, won the Minnesota Book Award and is currently being made into a film starring Ned Beatty and Alan Rickman."
Huh? Wha'? This is a new one on me. Anybody else?
Comments: Found this little tidbit...ot for AR but ImcK played in Rasputin with him...he is to be in the DaVinci Code as Teabing
"Sir Ian plays Sir Leigh: McKellen as Teabing in Da Vinci Code"20 April 2005 The Da Vinci Code is a publishing sensation. The world seems to be divided between those who have read it and those who have heard about it and then again between those who think it's a work of genius and those who think its theory is heretical balderdash. The story, it can be no secret, concerns the Holy Grail -- what it is and where it is. The Catholic Church is upset by the suggestion that Jesus Christ was married and that his bloodline survives to this day. As an atheist I am indifferent. As a reader I couldn't stop turning the pages of Dan Brown's book. Now there is to be a film and with Ron Howard directing and Tom Hanks starring all will be well and exciting too. I am thrilled to be working with them both for the first time. An extra delight is that this Hollywood studio movie is being filmed in Europe and for most of the shooting this summer, I shall be able to live at home in London. I start rehearsing at Shepperton Studios on May 3rd.
Comments: Elaine, you know where else is treasure trove of AR history is the University of Bristol theatre archives.
Comments: Elaine, my boys call them wife beaters because it seems men from the seemier side of the tracks wear them, tatoos, etc. Personally I hate them. rather see a nice t-shirt.
Dee....the mental pictures...clean hands, hmmm....playing doctor........bad

What is your location? on strike Comments: hey y'all....long time no see! There are some mighty
nice "new" pics here!
i
basically have nothing new to add to productive discussion other than
take care everyone!
Comments: So, what is a "wife beater" in the US? I heard it describe something Warrick Brown was wearing in CSI and I thought it was a vest. Here, "wife beater" is a can of Stella Artois! (My TA unit are champion consumers of that product!)
Comments: I like King of the Hill sometimes but other times it is a bit tedious. I do have one episode on disc though *grin*. I also like Family Guy because it's a little bit daft. And one I don't see enough of is Bob and Margaret. My favourite will always be The Simpsons. It was a shame they didn't have AR voicing a part for that ep with bliar and JKR!
Ah, the famous colour changing vest! One of the deleted scenes from the dvd was supposed to show why the colour changed but I still couldn't see it! It was always a mystery to me why MacLean didn't go back and put his shoes on, either. Could pick up a nasty verruka wandering about bathrooms with nothing on your feet!
Yes, sue, "Rope" is a good one, too. The play I need to go and listen far more carefully to is A Trick to Catch The Old One because I find it difficult to say the least. I wonder if the Beeb have all those other radio plays that he was in stuck in a box somewhere deep under Ally Pally or somewhere?
What is your location? Indiana Comments: Sue -- Ah...you know me so well! I LOVE the picture from the photo shoot! The man certainly looks good in jeans, doesn't he!
Kathy -- "He actually does a good job playing doctor--" I'm not going to say a word...not a word... *snort*snuffle*snigger*
Hikity -- I know you! Welcome to Claudia's!
Elaine -- (cartoon guy in "sleeveless 't'" as we call it in Indiana) If you'd put a baseball-type hat with a seed corn logo on the guy, he'd be a typical Hoosier man! Notice the big belly? Here, they proudly call that a "tool shed" -- because it sticks out so far it protects his "tools". Men...they "name" their fat while women starve, sweat and lipo it out! Go figure...
What is your location? Canada Comments: Claudia, i think that picture of Alan in the JSS chair is from Tango At The End of Winter promotion shot, i have another one but it will take me a bit to find it. We know how talanted i am at posting pictures here (not) so when i do , i will try to post it.
Comments: Yes, my boys used to be hooked on King of the Hill. I didn't take to it straight off cos I am very fussy about cartoons and I think the artwork was the same as Beavis and Butthead which I couldn't stand (another one of the boys faves). However, when I concentrated on the story and voices rather than the drawings I grew to love it, especially Bobby and peggy!! Of course, the Renaissance Fair episode helped too.
Comments: Elaine, that cartoon would be perfect for Arkansas all he would need is a baseball cap and a can of beer....purchased in another county of course lol. Do you guys get King of the Hill in England? Personally I think it is very funny but I have truly met some of the characters in that cartoon. I had a patient once who talked like Boomhauer (sp?) I hardly ever knew what he was saying!!!
Comments:
He keeps his hand very....mmmm....clean oooh to be his manicurist and actually get to ...er....work on those hands!
He actually did a very good job of playing a doctor they must have had someone who advised them who was well versed in the workings of a lab, hospital, & OR. Sometimes medical shows can be rather lame, or down right inaccurate.
Comments:
Oh I forgot to commend Dr.Blalock on his hands too Open heart surgery, anyone??
Comments: Yes, a vest is the thing that changes colour in the air-duct in Die Hard!!
Two nations seperated by the same language!!
Yes, Elaine Blind Corner was fraightfully well read wasn't it?
Mind you Rope is a corker too!! I defy any Brit of a certain age not to get the

maybe it's just me
Comments: I do like the suit he had for the S & S prem but I happen to love waistcoats (vests In US parley) and I haven't seen that one either. Isn't the Sainsbury's one something to do with Hamlet?
I've lost half my Blind Corner! Can't find the other set of discs anywhere! Yes, sue, I did find it hard going trying to work all the tunnels and things out and keep meaning to listen to it again. AR voices it very well but he does sound like he's just left finishing school in Switzerland rather than the boy from Acton!
BTW, this is
a vest:
Comments: Where in the world did you find Blind Corner? I've been looking for it everywhere.??
ARDHGB Works outing.....
Comments: AFNH I think AR has a vest on in the S&S pic his coat is open --the one button thing must be a later invention. (they're not called vests in the UK are they, what is it, waistcoat? Isn't vest an undershirt?) what ever it is called it is lovely, He sure cleans up well.
Going out to dinner with my friends tonight (The Ha-Ha sisterhood as we affectionately call ourselves) to celebrate my leaving town!!!
Comments: Wow - thanks Emily - that's a lovely clear one! Hadn't seen it before either.
Comments: Since we're sharing ... One from STLM
Comments: Sue - That Mesmer one looks like a works outing from ARDLHGB - do you really think would we be so sedate??!!! Poor man wouldn't know what hit him! Blind Corner - I found it quite visual, a combination of AR's voice and an overwrought imagination got to work on it - LOL!
Comments: Thinking again about that "military" pic, from the darkest, dimmest recesses of my mind, Sergeant Musgrave's Dance bubbles to the surface. I remember reading it in a list somewhere (Ali-Pat's?), and it was almost certainly pre-RADA.
Comments:
That Mesmer one looks like a works outing from ARDLHGB Haven't see that S&S one either, looking cute on his 50th!
I have listened to Blind Corner twice and enjoyed it but does anyone else get
frustrated trying to imagine all the well workings? It's so descriptive and yet
I do like to get things right in my mind's eye and can't quite!
Comments: Juliet - Hans free on the mobile, I'm driving. Good job too, or Mr Blair would have him locked up! Comments: There's a job for you out there somewhere Juliet! (God knows where but there has to be!) Whenever I see the JSS one I think he is sitting in the loading bay of Sainsburys for some reason!!
OK here is a really difficult challenge! At the end of the Private Lives London run I recall a set of photos being put on the web. They were on Suzannes I believe but linked to a private site. Somebody had been hanging round the stage door on a Saturday lunch-time or something and had spotted Lindsay Duncan and AR in costume being photographed professionally acting out their getaway with suitcases and an umbrella! Does anyone know what I am talking about and do they have the pix? The proper photos never turned up anywhere, we thought they must have been for a magazine or NY publicity. Anybody got any info??

What is your location? GA Comments: Hi Hikity. I think I missed givng you a big welcome aboard here. So....
Welcome aboard and I hope you will feel at home here.
To post an image, you will first need to upload them to a site that will allow hotlinking. PhotoBucket has been the most reliable, in my opinion.
Once they are uploaded somewhere, you can put them on the guest book either by copying and pasting or using the image tool in the toolbar above the comments box.
Beware though, if the image is large in size, it would be best for all concerned to post it as a thumbnail. If you choose PhotoBucket as your image host, the process of posting a thumbnail is very easy. Just copy the thumbnail and paste into the comments section.
If you need any other help, don't hesitate to email me and I'll be glad to help you.

Ummmmm think about it sticky toffee pudding and sweet AR at the same time! I
mean sitting next to you ...at the restaurant....
What is your location? Indiana Comments: Kathy After
reading your comment about Sticky Toffee Pudding, I went on an internet search
to find the recipe -- just for you! The first place I found it was (oddly
enough) on the Darden Rowing Club site. I was amazed to discover that it is the
Ivys own recipe! PLUS, read the first paragraph and see who the author sat
beside the last time he ate there! Sigh... now I have an unbelievable craving
for a sweet dish of Sticky I have no idea how to read these measurements, but theres probably a conversion chart online if anyone really wants to try their cooking skills. If anyone makes it, let us know how it tastes! STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING This International Food Festival award winning recipe is from The Ivy restaurant in London's Theatreland, where you always need to book ahead six months for a table. It's one of the few restaurants that's genuinely worth all the fuss. The food and service are excellent - a drink is normally in your hand within a minute of sitting down at your table - and you are also guaranteed to dine cheek by jowl with famous British actors grabbing a quick dinner after coming off stage (last time I went, I sat next to Jude Law and ALAN RICKMAN.)
The connection with rowing may seem hard at first to discern, but is very simple: there are so many calories in this recipe, it'll take at least four outings with the DRC to burn them off.
STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING Date Puree 3 75g (12.5 oz) dates, with stones removed 375 ml ( 12.5 fl oz) water Toffee Sauce 640ml ( 22 fl oz) heavy cream 340g (12 oz) sugar 130g (4oz) unsalted butter Sponge 130g (4oz) unsalted butter 375g (12.5 oz) soft dark brown sugar 3 medium eggs, lightly beaten 450g (15 oz) white bread flour 10g (1/3 oz) baking powder (sifted into the flour) 3g (1/8 oz) bicarbonate of soda (sifted into the flour) plus creme fraiche, vanilla ice cream or whipped unsweetened heavy cream to serve HOW TO MAKE IT 1) Preheat the oven to 175 degrees celsius, or 350 fahrenheit. 2) Make the date puree by simmering the dates in water over a low heat for 10-15 minutes until they are soft and the water has almost evaporated. Process them in a blender until they are smooth. 3) Make toffee sauce. Pour half the cream, and the sugar and butter into a thick bottomed pan and mix well. Bring the sauce to the boil stirring with a wooden spoon, and continue until the sauce is golden brown. This will take a while, and needs an eye kept on it to stop it boiling over or burning. When it goes golden brown, remove from heat, allow to cool slightly, and then whisk in remaining cream. 4) Grease and line a baking tin, measuring approximately 30 x 24 x 6cm deep with baking parchment. Now make the sponge. In a food processor or mixer, cream the butter and sugar with the paddle on a medium speed until it is light and fluffy. Add the eggs slowly , taking care the mixture doesn't separate. (If this happens, add a little of the flour and continue mixing for a minute or so.) Then fold in the sifted flour mixture slowly until smooth. Finally, add the warm date puree and mix well. 5) Spread mixture into prepared tin, and bake for about 50-60 minutes or until the sponge is firm to the touch. Allow to cool - it can be left in the tin. Remove, the sponge from tin and trim the outside edges. Cut it horizontally into three, then reassemble it in the baking tin, spreading two thirds of the sauce between the layers. 6) Once you have reassembled the pudding, reheat it in the oven at 175 celsius, 350 fahrenheit, for 15-20 minutes, then cut it into eight equal servings and top with remaining toffee sauce.
Comments: Thanks Claudia for the Ivy info--gets my stamp of approval it has sticky toffee pudding!!
Thanks
you so much for all the old pics I love it so many I haven't seen before. You
guys are great!
Comments: AFNH, THANK YOU for locating that photo. I've got it somewhere but since I stopped labeling my CDs long ago, it's near to hopeless to locate a particular photo--though I certainly tried last night. When I first saw that photo of the military themed play on Ebay, I wondered if it might be "A Man's A Man" from 1977? (Bristol Old Vic at Little Theatre?)
What is your location? GA Comments: Keep 'em coming Sue! I love your binbags too! Its funny how a day can start off great and then suddenly take a nosedive to h***! But those images are a huge cheer up, Sue. Thank you.
I've never seen The Tempest pics either. I remember the group of pics with The Ivy but still great to see them.
kathy, The Ivy is a really swank restaurant located in Leicester Square. I believe there are several other locations in major cities like New York City, LA, Honolulu, and more.
Comments: Going back to that mystery photo -- young AR onstage in army fatigues -- I kinda don't think it was a Latymer production. Unless those other guys in the picture were in Adult Education classes at Latymer!
Never saw the Tempest pics. Thank you, Sue.
Comments: also, guys, what's the Ivy?
Comments:
Sue..I like your shopping philosophy
Comments: I just like shoplifting at ebay Elaine!!
Comments: Sue, you have bottomless bin bags! I like the one of him coming out of THe Ivy - lovely clumpy shoes (I have a thing about shoes....) Your pics again?
AFNH, I think that is the picture yes. Well done for finding it.Now if we could work out what play it was? I have a feeling it must be a Latymer production.
And yes, the HP books don't seem to take so long with re-reading. I'm on OOTP again now. It's a strange book as it has a lot of frustrating threads in it - Harry's behaviour, Umbridge, Dumbledore's refusal to look at Harry, the fact we NEVER seem to find out what Snape is up to (I hope that this point will be revealed in HBP!) I think the worst thing about the new book will be that no doubt, as I have felt for the last two books, we will be left with a "cliff hanger" ending (ISIRTA fans - "My name is Hanger-Ending. Cliff Hanger-Ending....) yet knowing we will have to wait another 2 years or more before the final volume!

AFNH -- Love the photo of him from the poster! You're right: quality shows -- and the man practically oozes it!
So sorry! Can't help gushing!
Comments: Hikity - Closet Land - an excellent performance from both Alan Rickman and Madeleine Stowe, but due to its theme of abuse and torture, it is very heavy going, not for the faint-hearted. The theatrical look of the set takes away some of the heaviness of the subject, but your imagination has a habit of filling in any gaps.
Comments: Phew, so much to look at today! Many thanks for the Captain Swing article, very interesting. I noticed that the production transferred to Newcastle after the initial run, wonder if it was with the same cast. Gahh!! AR treading the boards at my local theatre and I didn't know (mind you, it was 1979!). Claudia - the two women in the ad - the top one is model Kate Moss and the bottom one is presenter Davina McCall, she fronts reality show Big Brother over here, and is usually very loud. Emily "Metro" is a free newspaper that can be picked up on public transport, and it often features good articles. Sue keep getting the old photie album out, it's keeping boredom at bay! Sooke Harbour House wow, what a place, and clock that bed! Couldn't you just sink right into it?! Elaine/Kathy I agree about the HP books, you need to read them all. I've found that re-reading the last two didn't take as long this time, and I also picked up on things I had missed before. The first time I read OoTP, I found it quite oppressive, as Harry was so stroppy and angry all the time, but I found it all in context this time around. I hated Umbridge (but she reminded me of someone I knew) but hope to see more of Luna Lovegood (she's a hoot - but I think there is much more to her character than meets the eye).

What is your location? New Zealand Comments: That is the Make Poverty history pic that Oxfam New Zealand used.I was thrilled to see it in my newsletter. I sent it to Kathy but wasn't sure about how to post it here. Thanks everyone for all the photos, news. The winter is getting worse.
What is your location? Germany Comments: Sue, I am sorry - two pages before I referred to the dress of Ms Horton's nice which I find just horrible. Thanks a lot for all these wonderful pics. I've finally ordered "Closet Land" and "Fallen Angels" from amazon.com - I can't wait. Anybody who has seen Closet Land? What do you think about it?
Comments: I like the picture in this ad better than the one they used for the Click video. What's "Metro"? Where is it available?
Claudia, the woman in the upper right is the model Kate Moss. I don;t know who the other woman is.
What is your location? GA Comments: Laura is absolutely right. He makes the quality!
Thank you so much for the new MPH ad, AFNH! I'm showing my ignorance here but who are the two women in the ad?

What is your location? Sheffield.UK (currently freezing- at work !) Comments: Wow,Sooke Harbour House looks stunning- what a beautiful place. Maybe Alan and Rima will be watching the dolphins and having exquisite seafood by candlelight. This place looks truly idyllic. I wonder did Rima find the contact- it says that Frederique, the owner has a Masters in Economics- does that ring a bell? Rima was/is an Economics Lecturer- coincidence-perhaps ? Gosh, I am truly envious, just to stay at SHH would be devine, but to have ALAN as your ...ahem... companion would be... something else. I am lost for words... Alan is so beautifully intelligent....oh alright... sexy. Like someone said (?)...he could read the telephone directory and I'd be intoxicated.. Intoxicated by his beauty... just AWESOME. Wonderful profile Pic of the Day over at TikkiRose's My favorite character.
Sooke Harbour House does look fantastic, doesn't it? Looks like a couple could have a very romantic time there!
You know kathy, it is quite possible he made a pass through Olympia or Seattle while on the left side of the continent. I believe it was Kimberly's secret friend that said he will be spending some time in New York before heading back to London. I hope Elaine is right and that he is there in relation to RC/Broadway!
Comments: And I have always liked this one:
Comments: Pose? Moi?
Comments: well I have been rummaging through old stufff trying to find that other pic from that young AR production but all to n o avail. It's probably lurking in an old Netscape account that I can never get into! However I found lots of stuff I haven't seen for ages so shall share a few bits. Most of it is nicked from ebay so i am afraid small. I would love to see the bottom row of this set printed out though!
What is your location? still haven't gone to bed........ Comments: I wonder if AR is planning on going to Seattle to maybe do something about the RC play there...it's just less than an hour from where he is. I often wondered if he would take the play to her home town. That area is a little more liberal than NY, If he is on the train, the train that goes along the Pacific coast is spectacular--goes places that cars don't. I took it once from Oakland to Seattle and back years ago--very restful, lovely. Maybe he and Rima needed to get away for awhile...wondered when they had a chance just to get away and relax.
Finally finished that book...good thing I wasn't born in the 18th century i'd have been burned at the stake for speaking my mind.
While I'm typing this PBS has great Canadian lodges on TV LOL
Comments: Elaine, I know what you mean about the silly money on EBay. Better to gack!
I see the mixup. The play AR was in was "Dick Whittington" playing a character called King Rat. The reason I thought it might be "The Hostage" was because it's about British soldiers and the IRA, and that might explain the military uniforms. I'll look over his Latymer credits again and see if there's any play about WWII there.
Claudia, thanks for the Vancouver sighting. Did he make it to California, I wonder?
Comments: Wow, Sooke Harbour House looks fantastic! Wonder if he was actually staying there? Rima, too? The rooms look wonderful. *sigh*
Comments: My son is SO lucky to be going to Canada at the end of July - I am so jealous! I guess he'll miss any AR sightings, though. I've told him to keep a look out as he will be in the Vancouver area.
Emily, I gacked that pic off ebay, too (hence teensy size). I know it's not the pantomime King Rat but I seem to remember it being from a play about POWs in Japan. There was a film made called King Rat which starred Tom Courtenay, and I think Dickie Attenborough. I bid on the pic at the time but then it got into silly money so don't know who won it in the end. All I know is that the whole pic shows the actors in jungle greens from WW2 vintage.
Kathy, history of 18C dress sounds so very interesting. Hope you get on okay. Just finished GoF again tonight. Back on OOtP now. Afraid I don't find any of the HP books scary or frightening, but they are very well written and full of clues and secrets! BUT HP himself is an irritating kid with an attitude problem that needs some discipline!! Wonder what he'll be like in the new one?
What is your location? GA Comments: Thanks for the RC articles, kathy. The outcome of that lawsuit will be very interesting. I'm hoping CourtTV will report on it.
I just finished looking through my email and there one from "Island Lady" in Canada. She has been with us in lurkville for quite a while now and is still quite shy about posting. But she did want to report an AR sighting. With her permission, here is the AR part of the mail.
Last week my 19-year-old son said to me, "Guess who John waited on at the
Sooke Harbour House?" (it's an internationally known guest house/restaurant
here on Vancouver Island). And I knew before he even told me that it
was Alan Rickman. Employees at the Sooke Harbour House are not
supposed to talk about the famous people who eat/stay there but my son knows
how I feel about Alan Rickman.
When I read that Alan was making a cross-Canada trip, I wondered if he'd
make it to this beautiful corner of the world...and he did! I don't
know exactly when he was there, but it had to have been in the last two
weeks. Thank you for this
report, Island Lady. I took the liberty of looking
up Sooke Harbour House. Its
gorgeous!!!! Get a load of that seafood menu!!! I wonder if I'd be able
to just get a shrimp scampi or batter fried shrimp to eat while watching the
orca "mosey" on by.
What is your location? GA Comments: kathy - I just clicked on your link and it worked fine.

Comments: I know I said I was going to bed but found this really good article by Katherine Viner about writing the play RC with AR. It is very good--hope it's not a duplicate of something that has already been posted. http://www.fromoccupiedpalestine.org/node.php?id=1513&PHPSESSID=ce02acb4e03d3c77db5fd903d566cf28
Found this also.... Corrie versus Caterpillar, Inc. With the help of the Seattle University Law Clinic, the Corrie family filed suit against Illionois-based Caterpillar, Inc., on Mar. 15, just one day before the two-year anniversary of their daughters death. Rachel Corrie, a 23-year old student activist, was bulldozed to death while protesting the demolition of a Palestinian home by the Israeli Defense Force. Her death was not the first incurred by the demolitions in the Occupied Territories, and thus a lawsuit against Caterpillar to halt distribution of machinery to the IDF and for personal damages was filed. The main issue of the case surrounds the amount of responsibility to which Caterpillar should be held accountable. At first glance it would seem that the corporation cannot help how its machines are being used; hence they should be able to sell their product to whoever is willing to buy. Indeed, this is the formal position Caterpillar has taken throughout litigation. However, there is strong evidence that Caterpillar knew how its product was being used, and United States International law stipulates that a corporation that is knowingly aiding and abetting violations of human rights can be held accountable. The case the SU Law Clinic helped the Corries file, uses this evidence in seeking damages and injunctive relief, or forcing Caterpillar to stop supplying their bulldozers to the IDF. Since the case was filed, four Palestinian families were added to the list of plaintiffs against Caterpillar. These families are the victims or representatives of family members who were killed or injured during the demolition of their homes by the IDF. On May 26, Caterpillar responded with a motion to dismiss the case. Their main argument is that [the Corries] are asking the court to recognize a novel theory of liability for international law crimes that corporations who do business with a government committing violations should not be found liable, or it would affect commerce worldwide, said the Corries lead counsel Gwynne Skinner, adjunct professor at Seattle University. Skinner, along with the rest of the Corrie team, is currently working on a response. The court will likely hear the argument for the motion to dismiss at the end of the summer.
Comments: What I meant to say was, I downloaded the photo used in the listing on EBay, I didn't actually buy the photo.
Someone out there has it. Maybe they can tell us where it's from.
What is your location? GA Comments: What kathy said.
Comments: I have a little info on that picture Elaine posted of young AR on stage in the soldier's uniform. I swiped that photo off an EBay listing sometime in the past two years. The seller claimed it was the earliest photo of AR on stage, although it was undated and the name of the play was not given. I think the description said something about a "high school" production.
I think it could be from a Latymer production. But my note on it says that it might be from "The Hostage", which he did as an amateur at the Royal Court sometime between 1966-72, making him 20-26, pre-RADA.
I really don't think it's from "Dick Whittington" (he played King Rat in that). That was 1976 and his hair was shoulder length. I tried to post the pic from the playbill, but the Photobucket album is not being cooperative. Anyway ... thanks for posting the pic Elaine, nice to look at every now and then.
Comments:
PS Claudia, really, you need to bite the bullet and read the HP books,
they really are good, I promise!
Comments: Claudia, thanks for the info on the MPH debt relief...I subscribe to the NY times email and they had the headline but when I went into the paper itself I couldn't find it, then got busy doing other things.
Elaine where in the world did you find that wonderful pic of AR in King Rat...so young...do you know what year that was?
In fact all of you who have contributed pics thanks, it has been a rather dry spell of AR news, I have enjoyed it all, even the walks down memory lane, as I am fairly new to the world of AR they aren't old news for me, so thanks.
I wonder if AR and Rima are taking a train trip thru Canada, I hear that is a most lovely trip. Maybe he is busy making plans for RC in the US. We can only hope.

There has been some encouraging news on the Make Poverty History/ONE front with the news of the $55 billion debt cancellation. I just hope they don't drop the ball and finish the job!
Sue, I love your donation to ARDF! The smile on him at the stage door is
adorable. How in the world did you stay calm enough to take that pic????
Elaine, I can't say I've ever seen that King Rat picture either. Thanks for posting it. Another adorable smile or I think its more of a laugh.
I am so ashamed....well maybe not. I've not read the first Potter book. I own all of them so far but I bought them in anticipation of reading them to my grandbabies. But after the first chapter, they lost interest. Maybe when they get older...... When is the new book due out?
Congrats to your graduate, Laurie!!!
Marlina, thanks to Kimberly just this week I received the Conan interview (and some other fantastic goodies). I hope to get them on the site as soon as possible. I had plans on working on nothing but the site this weekend but my son asked for my help for a client of his and when your kid calls, how can you say no? But I will work on the Conan and The View clips this week--I promise.
I think there have been a couple of people mention that they didn't know how to place the emoticons into their messages. Quick lesson:
Place the cursor inside the comments box in the place you want the emoticon to appear. Click the little smilie face in the toolbar above the comments box. A smilies window will open. Choose the emoticon you want and click on it. It will automatically appear in your message. I hope this helps.
What is your location? Massachusetts Comments: After a day of gardening, how refreshing to come and enjoy some AR news! Thanks for all the goodies ladies. Martha, I read somewhere that Johnny Depp is going to star in another Pirate movie with Kara Kneightly (Sp) which I believe the article said follows the Pirate of the Carribean movie. There is also a third planned. I think the article stated this second movie will be released in 2006 (it follows Pirates Ill have to find the article again and type it out for you. I think it was in the Boston Globe today if you get that paper too. On june 28th our library is showing the original Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder-I'd love to see that on the big screen again instead of just the VHS/DVD on TV/. In july Johnny Depp will be featured in the movie of the same name. Should be interesting how he does after Gene. I also cant believe the Star War characters are that old! Guess they would be though. What a fantastic movie to end the series with. Hooray for George Lucas. Zzzzz-my black Rose is doing fine in the garden and have been giving it plenty of water during this heat wave we have been having here in New England. As for the book in the Hp series you are referring to, I also found some of the scenes brutal particulary in the case of Umbridge and her atrocities towards Harry. I read somewhere before that the books do become darker as they go along. One can only wonder what the new one will be like. As long as they keep Professor Snape in it, we are all set! As for the movies, I still love the first one, Sorcerers Stone as it was just so magicial to see finally the settings on the big screen that we all read about and imagined. Happy Reading when you get to it. I wont tell the end but it is worth reading the book for and gets us prepared for the new one coming out in July. Sorry to ramble guys-off to browse for awhile. Have a fun AR night. Not sure if I can get back or not. Claudia-love all the little icons (faces0smileys etc.) Ill have to figure out how to do that someday. Have a nice evening. Pam
Comments: ZZZzzz, Is OOTP the only one you have read? If yes, I recommend you start at book 1, The Philosopher's Stone. It will make things clearer and perhaps not so scary. (And it is not so long!) And the film of OotP is in pre-production right now!
I am really longing for AR news tonight. Come on, Mr Rickman, give us a break!
Comments: Claudia, great new icons!
Elaine, I've read half of "HP Order of the Phoenix" and it was quite graphic and scary violent...a lot of detailed descriptions of cruelty, but I know that this book will wait awhile before becoming a movie and the kids will be older, too. Some of the ideas are so novel I can't wait to see how they handle it in a movie (think the "messengers", cute, huh?) So, I've read only half a book so far (it was too violent for me, maybe that's why I found the movie "HPPoA" more tame, also), but if the movie (HPOotP) is like the book, it will be quite intense! Movies *show* characters acting things out (as you probably know), books can sound like documentries to me because they detail so much of the characters thoughts, words, actions. When it comes to fiction, I like movies...a picture is worth a thousand words, that kind of thing.

Laurie - Congratulations to you and your graduate! There's actually a few of us here with 18 year olds who are finishing school.
I'm loving all of these old photos. What a wonderful smile in that last one.
Sue -
Wow! You actually got to stand next to him a have your photo taken?
I think I would actually faint.
What is your location? north of here Comments: Elaine - That's a wonderful pic! I love the ones of him laughing, and I'd never seen that one.
Sue - I especially like the first one...
Now forgive me, I'm feeling really nostalgic. All these "old" pics (if you think AR looks young in "Captain Swing," what about David Bradley!) Last night I went to "Star Wars." This is the last one - 6 altogether, spanning, with production time, over 30 years. When you think that HP will be one more movie, and span about half the time, it seems even longer. That I can remember watching the first one... well, let's not go there. (I still vote for the Star Wars opening music as the best movie theme EVER!)
There are concerns with HP that some (all) of the major players will be too old for their roles - to which I have always disagreed - but after SW, I'm even more convinced it will work for HP.
To hear the same voices, see the same characters after 30 years! The man in the gold suit, C3PO, is 59, the giant Chewbacca, 61, and tiny R2D2, 71! The voices of Yoda and Darth Vader, the same as they were decades ago. The movie wouldn't have been the same without them. HP producers, take note!
And if you've made it this far in this rambling post, we now come to the AR connection. Did anyone else notice that Obi-Wan Kanobi's dueling stance was exactly the same as that of a certain Slytherin Potion Master we know?
What is your location? Vermont Comments: Thanks for those pictures ladies! Sue, you and all the others that have got to see or meet the man in person are sooo lucky! I surely do hope he goes back on the stage someday. I wasn't hooked on AR back when he did PL in New York City or I would have gone to see him then. Well, we're off to graduation. Our youngest graduates from High School today. How time flies! Hopefully I'll catch up with you tonight.

Elaine - Yes I did take them, well apart from the one with me (or not!) in it
That B&W one is very young isn't it? I think I have seen another one from the

Sorry this is so small but it's just about the earliest pic of him I've seen. I think the play was "King Rat".
Comments: That second pic was taken in South Africa on one of his jaunts there and no, it isn't ET.
Almost at the end of my 4th reading of GoF. Funny, but it seems to have taken far less time than it did when I first read it, and I'm paying more attention to details and clues this time. Also trying to work out where they could cut Snape's scenes but I think he's pretty important to the plot. Always hopeful!
ZZZ, PoA is the best film in the series so far. Just remember that the movies are primarily for commercial gain. To get a real feel for HP you have to read the books! The movies leave a lot out!
Don't you just wish we could jump into Dr Who's tardis and go back in time to
all those plas that AR did when he was younger. All we see now are the odd few
pictures, leaving us salivating for more! Ah well.....
Comments: You know when you are round somewhere really bored then someone gets their photo album out and it gets worse?? Well I give you my

He certainly looks young there. But we were all pretty young in 1978. Gah! 5 years into the new millennia and it now feels so weird to write a date starting with 19.
I guess I'll have to join all you that are re-reading HP in preparation for July 16th. Have to be in the right frame of mind once I get that new book in my hands.
Thanks for posting the link to Rima's niece's blog. I remember looking at it a few months back when someone ran across it and I thought that maybe she was just a weirdo who wished she had a connection to AR and Rima. But the pictures prove that RH was actually there....so I guess it's true. Was AR in Wawa filming on May 1st? I can't remember.
Well, off to enjoy part 5 of Barchester Chronicles.....happy AR dreams to you all!

Kimberly -- Thanks bunches for those photos and info from Captain Swing. I've never seen or heard of it before! I just watched a show on animal planet about outrageous facts in the
animal kingdom (or something to that effect). One of the facts was
that cows give 3% more milk when they listen to Simon and Garfunkel
songs. Makes me wonder how much more milk they would give if they
listened to AR's voice... Note to self: once in vet school,
conduct experiment on poor unsuspecting cows.
That's a hoot, Sabine! You will have to do numerous experiments using different recordings starting with "My Mistress' Eyes"!

What is your location? MI Comments: Sue: My thoughts exactly after I saw my post! Here's the review info in bigger font. I'll put up the bottom half with the cast list enlarged shortly:
Originally presented in a workshop reading at The Warehouse in 1977, this first play for the RSC by Peter Whelan was concerned with the struggle of Sussex farm labourers to better their conditions during the deprivations which accompanied the agrarian 'reforms' of the 1830s. Captain Swing himself was, in Irving Wardle's words, 'a revolutionary bogeyman whose bloodcurdling letters strike panic into the hearts of the gentry'. He mayor may not be the 'mysterious wounded man who is sheltered by the revolutionary faction', but, as Robert Cushman remarked, 'It suits both sides to believe that he is; the people can use him as a symbol, the gentry can catch and kill him'.
The play's business, according to Michael Coveney, was 'the description of a village society deciding for itself what form its dissent. . . should take'. And, in Francis King's opinion, direction, design, and lighting combined to ensure that, 'in a small space of little 'more than bare boards, a whole village miraculously comes to life'. Coveney felt that the play took up the thread of Edward Bond's The Fool, and was 'similarly ambitious and just as successful', while Robert Cushman thought that
in setting and atmosphere the play recalls Serjeant Musgrave's Dance, and it is shot through with a similar promise: verbal - as where Swing speaks of an army raised 'from under the fields of King Corn's kingdom' - and theatrical. There is a powerful, if structurally confusing, scene in which the villagers beard the parson in his church, cut Christ down from the cross, and adopt the figure as their own. Bill Alexander's production played all over the tiny theatre enfolds the audience; it has wrap-around excitement.
Between the revolutionaries and the local aristocracy stands the equivocal figure of the village blacksmith, Hardeness, who, in Cushman's words,
believes in peaceful protest. 'The people keep the law - those who govern break it' is his credo, uttered at first with pride and finally, when the troops have been sent in and he has been sent to the hulks, with anguish.
Some reviewers felt, with Irving Wardle, that not even the 'stoic integrity' of David Bradley's performance as Hardeness could 'mask a fatal softness in the argument: namely, that it is only through the appearance of terror that reason appears to prevail'. Others felt, with Michael Coveney, that this ambiguity was central to Peter Whelan's dialectical purpose:
A couple of stunning tableaux, presented as dreams, evoke Swing as a Pimpernel-style saviour at the head of a fanatical army swathed in the Tricolour. Swing's case is argued in more realistic scenes by an Irish radical (Paul Moriarty); and the balance of the action is finely held in the mood of a deftly painted gallery of farm workers who capitulate to his low opinion of them by settling for 2s 6d a day and celebrating small triumphs instead of planning complete victory.
Francis King praised Alan Rickman's 'haunting performance as the ghost-like Swing' - appearing, as Irving Wardle put it, 'sometimes. . . as a delirious wreck, and sometimes as an implacable St. Just-like avenger when French revolutionary nightmare sweeps over the scene'. And Michael Coveney concluded his review by echoing the general welcome for Zoe Wanamaker's performance as Swing's chief prophetess, the 'local Joan of Arc'.
Bill Alexander's meticulous production marshals the elements of the play with exemplary rigour, creating a series of superbly varied stage pictures strong enough to incorporate the fantastical Swing interludes without undue force. The company is uniformly magnificent, with Zoe Wanamaker as Gemma catching the eye with a sustained display of fevered, perhaps foolish, commitment. If this astonishing new work is, above all, about the need in people to create their own gods, then that is what Miss Wanamaker conveys at full tilt whenever she appears.

Kimberly - thanks for those pics! I've never seen them before.
I just watched a show on animal planet about outrageous facts in the animal
kingdom (or something to that effect). One of the facts was that cows give
3% more milk when they listen to Simon and Garfunkel songs. Makes me
wonder how much more milk they would give if they listened to AR's voice...
Note to self: once in vet school, conduct experiment on poor unsuspecting cows.
Comments: Thanks Kimberly. The pix are great but my poor old eyes can't read the review, any chance of getting a bit bigger?

Just sitting here bored at work. I needed an AR fix so I started looking at some
of his pictures. I'm sure you've all seen these before but here are just a few
of my favorites.

kathy....I was just teasing ya!
Can't wait for Captain Swing, Kim!
Sue, I love the icon. As soon as I get a chance, I'm going to change my LJ icon to this one!
What is your location? MI Comments: Dee: That photo is from a play AR was in during his first employment with the RSC in the late '70's. The play was called, "Captain Swing." Captain Swing was first presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Other Place, Stratford-upon-Avon on June 26, 1978.
I'll upload some photos and review information on it, shortly.
Comments: Allo!
Thanks for all the links and pictures. I think the self-portrait really shows that the man has a sense of humour and well...what do you call it in English? ...eh nevermind.
Anthony Minghella was mentioned in a Danish newspaper two days ago, where they mentioned that his first directing-job was Truly Madly Deeply.
Sniv: Oho I know that film! I got it on dvd! Everybody else: Huh? What film?
Truly Madly Deeply is not very 'known' in DK...A shame really since Minghella has done some pretty interesting work and well Rickman and Stevenson is in it!
Speaking of Stevenson; I watched Mona Lise Smile the other day, my friend said I had to see it, so I thought well ok I am art interested so why not... And she was in it, not a big part mind you, but she was there. The funny thing was that she was playing this lesbian teacher at this very conservative school for girls and well the second I saw her I thought omg is she lesbian?
I don't know why I thought that but the way she talked and the way she...was made me think that - and later it turned out she was! I must be developing some sort of divination-sense...or something...
I'm sorry I just keep on typing - can you tell I have had almost none human
contact lately? Bloody exams!
Thanks again for all the links and pictures! Have anyone thought of maybe making an icon of that self-portrait? I would love one but eh my skills would not do any justice to it...
I hope you are all doing ok! I really need to stop don't I?
What is your location? home Comments: Dee - Wonder where that pic's from. And the price! GBP 52!! (Approx $94.25 USD) For a 3.5"x3.5" pic. That means he was writing awfully small. Hmmm...

Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench, who has played everybody from Queen Victoria to James Bond's boss, M, was made a Companion of Honor - a select group limited to 65 people at any one time. This is the Queens birthday and she gives out all these honors...894 to be exact....

Nice photo of Rima at the wedding. Lovely dress and necklace!
ARs Art -- loved the nose self portrait! Not only is he a man of few words, but also of few "lines"! Simple and fun! But can someone tell me what the black dots on the globe are? Are they bullet holes? Points of interest?
Someone on the live journal posted this signed photo they saw on eBay. I'd never seen it before. Does anyone know where it's from? Here's the link:

Comments: Thanks for the Bowness info and links, now I'll know what y'all are talking about.
AR's quite clever insn't he. Some of the people who made drawings for 21st C leaders were quite clever as well, liked the one that was just words.
Claudia, I didn't mean that the way it sounded--didn't want you to get pelted
with the weather, selfishly, I didn't want to get stranded in Miami. When
I changed my reservations for the Chelsea thing I ended up having to go all the
way around paddy's barn to get to Heathrow. plus you cannot go anywhere direct
from Little Rock.
What is your location? Germany Comments: Thanks for all the great picures and the link of the 21st Century Leaders project.
I have seen "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" today, the German version, the original movie is not shown in our town. I enjoyed the movie very much, although I have to say, that I didn't like Alan's German voice for Marvin, as in most cases, they obviously aren't able to find a good German equivalent for his voice.

I was commenting on the variety in the wristbands: Wank for Peace? Also, it did take me a few seconds to see that AR's self-portrait is The Nose. lol

hasn't he!! Of course I had to make an icon!
Comments: Kathy, Longitude is on my "read next" list now. I loved the observatory and the Royal Maritime Museum and the lovely green park for sitting. Here's the link to Oct03 archives at Suzanne's, and many thanks to AFNH, Juliet and others who shared accounts and pics. Claudia, it took me a few seconds to realize AR's self portrait is The Nose. lol The wristbands offer mottoes for all tastes: Wank for peace?

Comments: Looks like a Pensieve on the back cover to me, too. Kathy, the UK adult cover is usually composed of a photograph rather than an illustration (I love the Mary Du Pre designs too). On the new adult version, there is an old, battered copy of Advanced Potions Making" - very intriguing! Bowness-on-Windermere is a small town in the Lake District, and Alan did an appearance there nearly two(!) years ago. I believe he is a trustee or patron of the Old Laundry Theatre there, and from what I gathered at the time, he had promised to do something like that for a while, but commitments had prevented him from doing so. However on the 18th October 2003, it all came together. People from all over the world came to see it, though I understand it was originally only for "Friends" of the theatre. Being an industrious lot, when the event was announced on Suzanne's GB, many of us phoned for tickets and travelled to the Lakes for the day. The organisers were astounded at the turn out, as it had been kept fairly low key. Have a look at Suzanne's Archives and you'll find reviews from myself (glad you liked it, Barbara!), Juliet and quite a few others. It was a beautiful day, too, the last gasp of Summer.
Comments: Thanks for the 21st C Leaders link, Claudia. I can't find anything on the site as to who this group is or what the aim is. Also, is this an art auction? It's a beautiful site though!
What is your location? GA Comments: Thank you for your John Donne report, Aurora. Taking your own little JD book was pretty smart of you. I wouldn't have thought to do that. I wonder why they printed the musical pieces but not the spoken ones. It sounds like you enjoyed yourself tremendously.
Thank you for all the links, Laura. There were some that I had not seen before. The link that started with "stellamaris" didn't work for me though.
kathy, from everything I've been hearing, the storm should be gone by then and we will be back to our usual weather. So I'll do the admiral thing and take the brunt of the storm so my friend will have a nice flight through! *grin*
SuzyQ posted this a little bit ago in a couple of the Yahoo groups.
21st Century Leaders This site is quite interesting. If you are only looking for AR, don't bother to peek at the messages section. There are a ton of messages...some of which I really enjoyed reading. For instance, Liam Neeson did one as well as his two sons. Here's AR's art for this project.
And his self portrait
Cute isn't it?
Another wristband to wear??? LOL
Thank you SuzyQ!!!!
Comments: The difference is only in the jacket, Kathy. Maybe some adults don't want to be seen reading a kid's book. I have orderd both (so my son and I don't squabble). I like the adult version better anyway but what I really like is the Mary du Pre (have I got that right?) covers in the US.
Comments: Elaine, thanks for the book jacket pic. When I ordered my book from WHSmith they had an adult edition and a child's edition. What's the difference. Here in the US there's only the one edition--more of a children's edition.(I have no qualms about reading kids books! sometimes the |
