Excellent summing up! I loved the book but it is quite Brit orientated with respect to TV people etc. Also people may not like her attitude to drugs. However her passion for filmstars is quite universal and vey amusing.

Ali-Pat, thanks for the bumper stickers!  Snape Snape Snape!  LOL

Thanks to Susan CA and Ali-Pat on the heads up about The Great Snape Debate.  I am ordering it anyway because I really do enjoy Ms Millman's writing.  In her essay for Mapping, she was just so brutally honest but funny as heck in doing it.  I know the parts yall are talking about have to be the other writers!

Thanks for the news clip Peekabooh!  How exciting....Harry Potter coming to Disney!

Vicki, I have read it and so far as I can tell it is a memoir.  However, as we have seen, some memoirs contain a million little pieces of fiction .  I would recommend it, however, because it is a lot of fun to read!  Imagine Bridget Jones as a movie reviewer and you get the gist of it.  The Alan parts are spread here and there throughout the book, and it is always a nice surprise to happen on them.  (My second favorite AR story is how she gets his voice on her home answering machine).

Those second set of bumper stickers are interesting.  One looks as if it could be a flame.  The other looks like a blob of spilled liquid (potion, maybe?).  Could it be significant??  Or could they just have been chosen for effect?  Well, I guess we will find out July 21st.  It's getting closer!

Hey, here's something new and different.  It looks like Antonia Quirke's Madame Depardieu and the Beautiful Strangers will be published in the U.S. in July under the title Choking on Marlon Brando.  New title not an improvement in my opinion, but at least now maybe more U.S. readers will have access to it.

Anyway, it is fun reading for AR fans because of all the asides she makes about him (calling him "sex on a stick" is probably my favorite).

Since we´re into Snape anyway;
Snatched this announcement from LJ poster Randomposting.

LONDON (Reuters) -- J.K. Rowling, who became the world's first billion-dollar author on the back of Harry Potter's success, has given the go-ahead for the creation of a Florida theme park dedicated to the schoolboy wizard.

"The plans I have seen look incredibly exciting and I don't think fans of the books or films will be disappointed," Rowling said of the Orlando park that is scheduled to open in 2009.

The park is a joint venture between Warner Bros Entertainment, whose Potter films have so far grossed more than $3.5 billion worldwide, and Universal Orlando Resort.

In a statement rich in entertainment hyperbole, the builders of "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" said they plan to "create the world's first immersive Harry Potter themed environment."

Barry Meyer, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment, said: "Over the years we've received thousands of letters from fans around the world wishing they could visit Hogwarts (School) and the wonderful locations described in each of J.K. Rowling's beloved stories."

Warner Bros. Entertainment is a unit of Time Warner (Charts, Fortune 500), as is CNNMoney.com.

The park's opening could help quell the withdrawal symptoms of Potter fans around the globe who have bought 320 million copies of her wizard tales and turned every one of the films into a box-office hit.

Pottermania is set to scale new heights in July with the last novel hitting the bookstands and the latest film being launched in a deluge of global publicity.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the final installment in Rowling's hugely successful series, is being released July 21.

Rowling is to mark publication with a moonlight reading for fans at London's Natural History Museum.

Sweepstakes are being conducted by her British publisher Bloomsbury Publishing Plc and American publisher Scholastic to pick the winning fans.

"Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix," the fifth film in a blockbuster series based on the books, is being given its official world premiere in London on July 3.

Rowling, whose books are always released under tight security, has said two characters will die in the seventh and final book, but she has refused to give any clues.

The author has appealed to people to keep the end a secret: "I want the readers who have, in many instances, grown up with Harry, to embark on the last adventure they will share with him without knowing where they are going."

U.S. authors John Irving and Stephen King were so worried about the fictional hero's fate that they urged Rowling to spare the bespectacled hero.

Okay, let's see if these show up:

Perhaps it's old news, but I've just discovered the possibility Google offers to search for someone or something in the "News Archive" which I tried at once and I was astounded to find so many articles and interviews published years and years ago. I think, I do have to dig deeper in that pool of articles, there seems to be so much I have not read before. For some you have to pay as it seems, for others you have to register before, but I've already found some who can be read at once. Perhaps a nice find for us who were not fans of the first hour. There is still so much to catch up with.

Susan, I am pretty much in agreement with you about The Great Snape Debate but I bought it anyway (and snagged the two bumper stickers).  BTW, there are TWO chapters on Alan, one in the "for Snape" part of the book and one in the "against Snape" part.  While I am happy for the attention being given to (in our opinion) the most important character in the books and films, I have the impression that this book was kind of thrown together.  But I love the bumper stickers.

Hi Cats!  I listened to the commentary on the newest version of the RHPoT DVD when it first came out and I am in full agreement with you.  But its little things he says at different times and places that's really putting me off him for good.  As you said, Regis and Kellie seemed to have had problems talking to him.....I don't recall an interview I've ever seen him in where he didn't seem very difficult to talk too AND understand.  I remember seeing him on Bill Maher last year and my gawwwd, I began to be embarrassed for him.  I don't know how to explain it.  Oh well....enough of Costner, I suppose!  LOL

FANTASTIC FIND Carolyn!!!  I can't wait to see that show!  As Ali-Pat says...there is just no telling how many AR appearances there are out there for the our eyes to feast on!

Ali-Pat (bless her wonderful heart!) and I are teaming up on this so we'll post it as soon as we can!

Now, I have been surfing around because I'm trying to find a copy of that new Harry Potter book yall were talking about a while back, The Great Snape Debate.  Now yall know me...I am not a huge fan of HP but I really did enjoy the Snape essay in Mapping the World of Harry Potter so much that I wanted to give this book a try.  Anyway, in my searching, I found a blog by the person that wrote the Snape essay AND some of the newer book!  Imagine being able to contact this lady!  We've all mused about how she MUST be an Alan Rickman fan!  Anyway, if this link has been posted before, please overlook my duplicating it!

Cats, the DVD is available at amazon.co.uk (and IIRC, a couple of other UK sites also)

The reason OOTP was moved up two days was to make a bigger splash w/its opening & get better numbers, because now it will technically considered a five-day opening (Wed-Sun) which will affect all the numbers for the film. What it's also doing is effectively cutting into Paramount Pix, "The Transformers" opening weekend box office by two days, thus, eliminating that movie as numbers competition.

Claudia,

I have to admit, I really don't pay too much attention to Costner when I see him.  But I did happen to be watching the director's commentary with him on RHPOT the other day, and I mentioned on my LJ that I was actually pleasantly surprised.  He came off as very humble, very self-deprecating about his acting 'at that time', and basically admitting that there were many things he just couldn't do - an English accent being one.  He seemed pretty humble.  And he outright addressed the claims that some said he was upset that AR stole the movie by saying that wasn't true, that he was glad about it - that AR was fantastic.  He also giggled like a schoolboy every time one of AR's funny scenes came on!

But, I did catch a glimpse of him on Regis and Kelly this morning (wasn't watching it closely), but from what I could gather the interview seemed a bit 'off' or tense.  Like Regis/Kelly were having a hard time talking to him.  But I saw him on Good Morning America about an hour earlier and he seemed very comfortable with Diane Sawyer.

Odd.

Grrrrr!

Western or Waterworld, Kevin Costner sticks to his guns

Knowing yall don't want to read the whole thing...this is what I'm "grrrring" about!

"Most of the people who write [about my films] don't forensically know exactly what went on," says Costner. "If they did, they'd have a different opinion of me. What happens sometimes is that people get confused when they think you want to keep a scene because of vanity. A lot of times what I'm arguing for is a script that can't speak for itself. But more importantly, I'm arguing for the commerce of the movie. The success of a movie is: Will you take it off a shelf five years from now, 10 years from now? Will you revisit it with a sweetheart, a son or daughter, or because that was the movie where you got your first kiss in the theater? So those decisions you're making are for its lifetime, not its opening weekend. And when they fall into the conventional wisdom of pace and timing, ratings even, that's when the films suffer."

Now he's blaming film critics and people being "confused" for his stupid vain actions on RHPoT!  Geez....."forensically see"!  Costner either needs to own up to his actions or just refuse to talk about it at all!  He just looks more and more like an idiot!

Now I liked this man way back from his Bull Durham days.  I lost a bit of respect for him when I read what he did with RHPoT but since AR seemed to want to put it in the past....I felt I could too.  I still maintain that Costner is a good actor in the right part but I can honestly say that after seeing him on Bill Maher last year (gawd how he was completely incoherent!) and now reading this article that I have finally lost all respect for this man.

Actually, there are a couple of projects around that have his name listed because he was supposed to be in them, but for one reason or another, he wasn't. One example, is a short  film, directed by Hugh Jackman's wife, called, "Stories of Lost Souls", a series of six (I think) vignettes. The one Alan was supposed to be in was called "Standing Room Only".

In defense of Andrew Davies (who gave us the great Colin Firth version of "Pride and Prejudice"), if you read "Sense and Sensibility", you will see that Austen included a major (and amusingly sordid) back-story for Brandon that we did not see in the Ang Lee-Emma Thompson version. (The backstory includes a fascinating part about the young Brandon and his brother's fiance, as well as a duel between Brandon and Willoughby.) We only hear about some of this (the sotry of Eliza) from Brandon in his confession to Elinor. Davies is going to include all of this, which will make it a very different S&S from the Ang Lee version. Also, David Morrissey, who is playing Brandon in it, is not exactly chopped liver. It will be a different (and more true-to-Austen) Brandon than Rickman's. Therefore, it's like apples and oranges, so not a threat to what AR put down on the screen already.

I for one am looking forward to Andrew Davies' version of S&S, since it promises to be more faithful to the book.  Surely there is room for more than one interpretation. But then, if you want to be narrow-minded about it, that's your choice.

Obliterate my memories of the film? Ha! I’m not even sure an alien lobotomy could do that.

I agree with everyone who says the photo is a manip – something about the shoulder and the proportions just doesn’t look right. I do think I managed to decipher most of the text though…sort of.

“Original Photos are(?) (something in parentheses I can’t make out) by their actual Owners(?). Montage by Bloodhound(???) (no idea what the next word is) 2000 (or 2003?)

I also went back through my (pitifully small) DVD collection and recorded some AR-related clips from different commentaries for those you who either don’t have the DVDs or don’t have the time to listen to the entire tracks.

Like you Hikity I am sick of the constant issuing of remakes in the cinema however whilst I cannot see the point of remakes of films like The Italian Job, The Wicker Man, Sleuth, The Thomas Crown Affair etc etc I can see that new versions of the Classics should and are going to be made continually. After all one goes to see Hamlet at the theatre more than once with completely different productions. I've seen two versions of The Seagull in the past year and I know there is yet another at the RSC in Stratford at the moment.

One of my all time favourite novels, Jane Eyre, has been made into countless films and TV versions and I still watch all of them avidly.

I shall watch the new TV Sense & Sensibility with great interest although the "additions" to the story do sound a little alarming! Read another interview with writer Andrew Davies HERE

I must take umbrage at a couple of the quotes though:
Quote:

“She (Austen) should have managed to make us feel that Edward was worthy of Elinor and even though she shows Colonel Brandon is worthy of Marianne, Austen never explains how Marianne goes from desperately in love with Willoughby to broken-hearted to be in love with Brandon.

“The men needed butching up and you needed to see more of them.”

Commenting on the film, he said he didn’t believe that Hugh Grant’s usual turn as a stammering hero and Alan Rickman “squinting sinisterly” wasn’t enough.

Quote:

He said, “It was a very good film, beautifully directed by Ang Lee so you are up against something when you are following that. So obviously the aim is to try and make people forget about that one. Our lovely version is going to clearly obliterate your memories of the film.”

Sorry Andrew, but I have NO intention of my memories of the film being obliterated by your new version!!

442Rickmaniac, Snow Cake is only available in Region 2 so far, and I got my copy from Amazon.uk.  I patiently await the Region 1 version...

As for Alan's comments on the CR segment, I don't think he is hinting at some chronic illness or anything, I think he is merely facing the reality that he will never play traditional romantic leads or physically demanding roles anymore.  Alas, time marches over all of us.

Is anyone desperately afraid that our boy is ill??? I noticed in the abysmal Charlie Rose interview from, what, 2002, that he gave a little tiny blink when Rose said, regarding the Harry Potter movies, "you'll be doing those for the rest of your life". Then of course he, Alan, goes on to explain that there will only ever be 7 movies.  He also went on to discuss about how your instrument, as an actor, starts to let you down, so you can't do the things you wish to do because of age limitations. *sigh*
My Favorite Alan Rickman movie is "Close My Eyes" and I watch it every single f*ing night, he makes me cry. Also "Closet Land", which I am playing as I write. (this is the scene where he gives Madeline Stowe some broth, and then digs up the letter of apology, My boyfriend despiises this film...I tried to have him watch it once and he got extremely ticked off. Interesting.) By the way, does anyone know how to get a copy of "Snow Cake"?

Here's just a tid bit of info I learned some time back. I know a lady from another totally OT board who works in the film industry as does her boyfriend. He worked on Dogma. She said she was there for the filming of the lake scene were Alan walks on the water. She said it was a terrible night. I think she meant the weather was bad and things just weren't working. She said that there was supposed to be a little dance number on the plexiglass that he walked on in the water. But it was too slippery so they scraped the idea. She said her guy would know more details but so far I haven't gotten any about it.

Hi there. I tend to lurk here from time to time for AR news, info, and photos, but I found the conversation on commentaries and I just had to jump in with this. I borrowed a DVD of STLM recently and I listened to the commentary the director, writer, and producer. I expected it to be mostly historical background and technical details on filming, which there was a lot of (though it was very enlightening), but I thought maybe there might also be some interesting behind the scenes information. Of course, there was a lot of praise for the actors, especially Alan and Mos, but then there was this...interesting bit of info. This was during a scene where Blalock and Vivien are in the hospital at night discussing the surgery (the scene immediately after the one where Blalock asks the parents for permission to operate on the baby):

“This is a scene which originally started with both men singing ‘What a Little Moonlight Can Do’”.
“When Alan Rickman saw the cut of the movie, he said ‘[indistinguishable word] did a great job, but I really miss the singing…why was it not there?’ and I said ‘…because it was terrible [laughter from other commentators], just really awful’…and he said ‘Oh, really…’ [more laughter] kind of like it was the end of it.”
They then (while I had a spaz attack because there's no deleted scenes on the DVD or ANYWHERE for that matter) go on to talk about how they originally thought it was an important scene in depicting the relationship between the two men because it was their “one intimate moment”, but too much importance was placed on it and it didn’t feel very genuine after a while (or something like that).

I also borrowed a special edition 2 disc version of Die Hard a few years ago, which had a text commentary in subtitle form from the cast and crew (including AR). I don't have the DVDs anymore, but I managed to find several chunks of the commentary here.

You know, you learn so much about our man when you watch the commentary. Like

Die Hard-- The meeting between Hans and John was not originally suppose to happen, Alan was goofing around one day using an american accent, the director heard him and wrote up the meeting the dext day and changed the script to have Hans as an American.
--The director wanted the terrorist ( who said we were terrorists) to wear commando outfits but Alan suggested that Hans wear a suit because he didnt feel Hans is the kind of person who would wear one, the director liked the idea and used it.
-- Alan tore his knee ligaments doing the jump down on uneven cement on the scene where he is looking for his explosives and gets caught by John, he took a couple days off and was right back at work ( coincidently he retore the same ligament in Judas Kiss ( dont know how though) and they corporated the limp into the accident in the end
-- The look of sheer terror is real at the end of Die Hard, they had him hooked up to a crane and they were instructed to let him go on 2 instead of 3 and he was expecting to be let go on 3,not 2 so he was totally surprised and didnt expect it but when the finished result came out even he thought it was more genuine.

Dogma--Alan took to playing the Angel hard one day and wore his wings even when he wasnt filming causing an extreme back injury where he was out of action for a week, when he came back he was in pain and you can see it by the way he sits down in the restaurant just after the lake scene. He just glides in to the chair, not sit down.
-- Jason Mews learned both his and everyone elses lines to impress this classicaly trained british actor and show him up, but instead Alan and Jason got along tremendously and hung out outside of shooting too
--Alan suggested Emma Thomson to use as god but she was home having a baby so they got Alanis Morrisette to do it instead.
--The code piece was really inconvienent at one point when he realized that he had to pee and couldnt.

Bob Roberts-- The movie would never of been made except for the singing of Alan and the phone call from Tim.

Help im a fish-- Alans idea to go, puh puh puh, mmmmm when Joe gets a voice.

Oh man , i could go on with Dark Harbor, Sense and Sensibility, and other movies but unfortunatly i have to get my ash going, you see, i have a wedding shower to attend. My own and it would look bad if i were late.

Did anyone pick up the blooper from one of the new scenes. When he is with the barons and just before he jumps on the table he kinda stumbles and slips a bit but like a true professional he  recovers and moves on to the table. And did you know he ad-libbed many of his lines in that movie, like he went off script with " its dull you twit, it will hurt more". But thats the only way he would agree to do the movie after being asked three times is that he could make the Sherrif his own and boy!!!! Did he do that. You guys have to listen to the commentary with Morgan, he is constantly laughing and giggling at Alan's parts.....even Kevin is caught giggling a few times at the antics of the sherrif. Christian Slater has awesome words for Alan in the commentary too. Great stuff.

For Christmas last year I got the newer special edition of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I did watch all the special features right away but for some reason I wasn't thinking there was anything different about the movie itself. I've seen the movie MANY times and figured I'd get in the mood to watch it again soon enough. So I just put it away with the rest of my beloved AR DVDs. Last night I got in the mood and got out RH and plopped it into the DVD player.

To my very happy surprise it was like getting to see a whole new Alan movie! There are about 4 lengthy Sheriff scenes that are completely new and entire storylines within themselves as well as extra footage on several of the existing scenes! They DID cut out a lot of his stuff!! There was only one Kevin Costner scene that was new. I will say that the Sheriff is extra campy and over-the-top in these new scenes. So the final film version actually has him as a slightly less ridiculous character.

So I highly recommend this DVD set, even if you already own the older version. This is VERY worth it for all the extra Alan-goodness!! This might not be new news to many here, but I was sure surprised at it.

Thanks to everyone for the nice birthday wishes. My husband and son bought me some plants for the garden and the secretary at the church where I work gave me a beautiful hanging basket of pansies! This coming weekend is supposed to be ideal weather for planting so I cant wait to get started.
We have also been preparing for our big church yard sale by sorting/tagging all the items that people have donated. Someone donated a Harry Potter lego set with the potion master in it-brand new!!! Two of us went into hysterics over it and of course, I had to buy it..
I love the picture below of AR with Rima and the other woman. Great picture Sue-thanks for sharing it with us.
Off to brwose for awhile and if I see anything about AR that you guys havent mentioned, I will let you know-have a nice weekend also.

Just to keep up on the latest whereabouts:

RISES AGAIN
Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman and sculptor Antony Gormley hosted a dinner last night that brought fashion and the arts together at the new Skylon restaurant in the soon to be relaunched Royal Festival Hall. The original Skylon, a 300-feet high cigar-shaped steel sculpture, was the centrepiece of the Festival of Britain in 1951. Sipping Taittinger Rosé, guests including Thandie Newton, Lily Cole, Alan Rickman, Hari Kunzru, Harland Miller, Lulu Guinness, Dame Vivien Duffield DBE, Sir Terence Conran, Thomas Heatherwick, Alain de Botton, George Alagiah, and Sophie Fiennes tried to spot the artist's life-size human sculptures dotted on the rooftops across the river, having already taken the opportunity to see Gormley's Blind Light exhibition at the Southbank Centre's Hayward Gallery. Executive chef Helena Puolakka served a European-inspired dinner before Jude Kelly OBE brought the evening to a close, asking the guests to toast the exciting future of the Royal Festival Hall and inviting them to view the major restoration work, which is now complete. AlSiPaRi, to get knighted in this country you have to be one of several things  - ie a friend or benefactor to a political party,  or a well known celebrity who has done a lot for their particular industry and/or done good charitable works, or a successful businessman who has brought the country money/recognition or somebody with friends in high places who has dropped lots of hints.

I believe that you are first offered one of these honours privately and you can choose to accept or can turn it down. For years nobody revealed who turned them down but a couple of years back a list was leaked  showing the people who had refused honours for many various reasons.
Alan Rickman was not on this list which can mean one of several things a) he has never been offered an honour b) he has made his feelings about the honour system so well known that it would be a waste of time offering him one or c) he was offered one, refused and the list isn't complete. Who knows!

By the way. Sir Alan Rickman sounds really good. What he have to do to become a Knight? Have he to get an Oscar? I´m not literated in it. What did Sean Connery do? Please do not misconceive me. It doesn´t make any difference to me, if he´s a Sir or not and I think for him as well but is it possible?

Thanks to all of you, telling me the different meanings of the "sir".

I've learned, that it is no fault calling someone this way, if you want to behave in a respectful manner. (which Alan Rickman, of course, deserves in any way!)

Well,  should I have the ultimate pleasure to meet him in July at the HP Premiere (which is not very likely) I know how to cope with it!

And, @vera, Tirol is not in Italy, it's in Austria. Südtirol or Southtirol belongs to Italy (but not voluntary! )

Surely NOT, Fairy! See what Maryland posted. Cultural differences are very normal and nothing to be embarrassed about. On Thursday I asked a gentleman on the Strand whether he knew a place I was looking for and I certainly addressed him as "Sir" (anyway he very much looked like it ). AND in the English Club, where we had "afternoon tea" (wow, that was something!!) my friend's husband, who invited us, was all the time addressed as "Sir".

I just wanted to comment on the discussion regarding addressing AR (or anyone else you don't know) as "Sir".  Here in Virginia as well as further south, it is quite common to address individuals as "Sir" or "M'am". It is used as a form of respectful address if you are either not aquainted with the person or are not on a first name basis. It is certainly not seen as servile behavior. The terms "Sir" and "M'am" are used routinely by myself and other staff where I work to address our dental patients. In turn we are sometimes addressed as such, especially if the patient doesn't know or can't remember our names. No offense is ever taken. I think the confusion I'm seeing here is due to the title "Sir" used in the UK and Europe.  This would explain AR asking to be called "Alan". If he came down south here, he'd get plenty of "Sirs" addressed to him. We're not trying to "Knight" him. It's just how we're raised!  I hope this helps a little bit!

Rickwoman, I think the use of the term  Sir (or Madam) in ordinary conversation would be considered a bit outmoded or even servile nowadays.
Certainly you might get "Can I help you sir?" in a shop and as was said some schools still expect pupils to call teachers "Sir" but generally you wouldn't address someone on an equal footing as sir in normal conversation.

Rickwoman, I'm not British either, but I think this as in the Harry Potter books the 'sir' is required from students to name their Professors! is the crucial point. Calling Alan Rickman 'sir' would mean expressing a bit too much respect. I don't think you call someone 'sir' who is your equal. Am I right?

5/19/07 at 02:10 PM

AlSiPaRi, yes fan is actually short for fanatic! (That's probably why they shortened it )
As for the "call me Alan" story I think you'll find that the person concerned called him "Sir" rather than "Mr.Rickman" which over here is generally only used by shop assistants etc.

AlSiPaRi
5/19/07 at 01:45 PM

What is your location? Germany

Comments:
I do not really think that he meant his fans. Because he knows what his real fans are (like those here) and that they are ever respectful to him and no sceaming bimbos.
We know that he hates this importunately bahavior. And I think he knows that we knows, all right
(though there was a fan who called him Mr. Rickman and he said "no, Alan" but we should let him the possibility to say it to us personal, shouldn´t we. We are the one who have the most pleasure in it)

Is fan actually the shortcut of fanatic? Call me a fool but sometimes I think about it and If it is so I do not like to call me a fan. But I don´t found a better word.

Puddingdale
5/19/07 at 11:14 AM

Comments:
I agree with almost everyone as to what hi scomment could have meant... *lol* And yes, AR did not mean the fans - he is not that rude. Yes, he does not take all the fuss at the red carpet easy. Yes, it can be too much but also yes, he could have decided against becoming a star.
I still think he could walk away from those fans who misbehave. Most of the time he decides to be friendly though and that is a kindness most fans will appreciate. Not everyone waiting at the red carpet is a monster after all. But I know why I do not like to go to these events - because I do not want to be confused with the screaming masses - who are in fact only few "pushers and pullers" as compared to a big bunch of extremely nice people. At least, I have known no other fandom where people share their possessions and knowledge so freely and make use of their creative geniuses to entertain their fellow fans like here.

And in the end, we all have to deal with people we feel uncomfortable with in our jobs. I for instance am often pushed and asked inappropriate questions or even touched by people who want to talk to me in my job. I know what it feels like to force a smile. AR gets a lot more money and fun out of it than I do, I am sure *lol* I think he too has found his ways to deal with the hell of fame - he is old enough, there is no need for us to protect him. Our job is rather to behave well should we meet him one day and to treat him like a human being, with respect. I will. Big promise.
Right, this post went into another direction than I intended, but so be it

snokat - I agree (and in response to you "first thought" - that would be fun - hehe)

it's a little unsettling the points that keep hrmm, "trying to make themselves pressed", I mean, this is a fan forum, and it seems to me there's a lot of trying to put fans down going on right now... Why bother?

Maybe it's a good idea just to drop the subject now, so as not to get in to anything nasty just for the sake of it...

First thought: I think Alan was hammered!

Second thought: I think he did mean that it is a film festival that is more casual and yet focused on the movie and it's merits rather than the shameless self promoting (prostitution) of celebrities. I don't think it had anything to do with fans.

@samba: If I have you right, I can say that I  feel very similar to what you are saying. The longer I was watching the Berlinale 2006 red carpet clip a few weeks ago, the more I felt such a strong pitifulness for the "stars" which I had problems to bear. All these greeeeedy people behind the barriers, like wild animals ...screaming, shouting, being sooo disrespectful towards the "stars". How can these journalists a/o fans dare to call them names or even touch them ?? They behave as if they had bought all rights  treating them as they like to by paying for their films etc.
At that point I was/am very close to the thought of them being treated like prostitutes !
I'm in a recurring discussion with a friend of mine who's attitude towards this publicity, red-carpet, journalism-thing is quite clear-cut: these actors and singers knew this would happen before they decided to get into public and (hopefully) become famous. They knew that they won't be private people any longer. That's the price they have to pay for being stars.
Unless she maybe right in general, I feel this pitifulness every time I notice this dis-comfortable expression in Mr. Rickman's face on pics and vids in public. It seems to me as if - noticeable often - it takes him quite an effort to smiiiiiile and I think that alth
ough he must be pretty well aware that he owes his fans and the press a lot, it's hard to suffer.
Speech delivered ... not being a native speaker, I hope I could express myself so that anyone (who likes to) was able to follow ... thanks for your kind understanding. Have a wonderful SUNDAY !

Hi there.
Here's my interpretation of AR's comment. I think what he meant was that the Tribeca Festival (just like others such as Cannes Festival) it's about the films, their quality and intensity rather than who made it. Maybe he was comparing it to the Oscars. The Oscars have a preparation of moths I think and it's broad casted live worldwide. I admit that I didn't even know about the Tribeca Festival until I reed it here, but all my life I've known about the Oscars. People go there to see the actors/actresses how they look, what they were dressed like, who where they with. I believe that in festivals such as Tribeca and Cannes it doesn't work like that. I think that it's the difference between going to see the actors and what ever films they made, and going to see the films and what ever actors made it. Hope you can understand what I mean. Maybe he meant that he didn't have to try look his best or have to be what everyone expects him to be (the prostitution thing, "selling" himself), because it's not about him being the great guy who did that film, it's the guy who was in that great film. I'm repeating myself, sorry.
Well, if he takes I look at this GB he'll know that there's a bunch of people that will follow him no matter what, hubbys included, so, we don't mind if he doesn't like those hard red carpet moments, as long as he keeps acting wonderfully the way he does and giving us his gorgeous smile, we're ok with that, right?
Whoa, this got to long already, sorry about that.
Have a wonderful AR weekend you all.

well I don't think he'd be so rude as to say it like that if that's what he meant... he's not the sort that seems to want to slap his fans in the face - calling himself a prostitute to their, what, "sex-buyers" (forgot the word) would be quite a turnaround...

maybe he also meant the way Actors and actresses are questioned about their private lives and have to reveal details instead of promoting the films themselves. Could also be a comment about the increasing "nudity" of actresses on the red carpet
I do not think AR was thinking about the fans really. He could just walk away from them, if it was too much. Instead he seems to bear with them patiently and that is his friendly decision.

“What do you think he meant, though, seriously?  Do you think he was emphasizing a perception that Tribeca cares about presenting quality films rather than - what - a focus on the 'celeb frenzy'?” Catsplay

Catsplay, are you referring to Mr. Rickman’s comment about the Tribeca Film Festival as "personal and manageable--and about film rather than prostitution." .  My interpretation of that comment was more the difference between independent films and big budget movies that have to be peddled (ie. One has to prostitute themselves to sell the movies?)  Or maybe a difference between say the Cannes film festival (which seems way over the top)  and the Tribecca Film Festival, more low key and about appreciating the art of  the films more than having to put yourself out there to sell the movie?   I’m not sure I’m explaining my impression very well , but I really didn’t take it as Mr. Rickman saying anything against the fans and celebrity watchers.

Did this comment bother anyone? Did anyone else have a different interpretation? I’m curious to know.

Next to roll on to the carpet was the often melancholy, theatrically gifted actor Alan Rickman. Caught in a moment of surrealism, I found myself intimated, enchanted and slightly confused, all at once, by Rickman's specialty English humor. When asked to describe his Tribeca Film Festival experience, he confessed that is was "personal and manageable--and about film rather than prostitution." Alan, forgive me for having asked that one but, huh?? Alright, so both his star power and outstanding talent were enough to excuse him.

Cats, this particular deal will probably not include the US. RM will most likely negotiate a US deal with another distributor.
Unless the film is under the umbrella of a major studio who has their own distribution company, there is usually more than one distributor involved.

Voltage takes on Alan Rickman starrer Nobel Son
Jeremy Kay in Cannes
17 May 2007 04:00

Voltage Pictures has acquired international rights to the crime caper Nobel Son starring Alan Rickman that premiered recently at Tribeca.

Director Randall Miller and CAA's Roeg Sutherland negotiated the deal with Voltage sales chief Nicolas Chartier, who will commence sales on the Croisette.

Chartier also announced that James Cromwell has joined Laurence Fishburne and Cole Hauser in the cast of police thriller Tortured from Five Star Pictures, Insight Film Studios and Proud Mary Entertainment.

In Nobel Son, Rickman plays a philandering chemistry professor who sets in motion a chain of lust, betrayal and revenge when his son is kidnapped and he refuses to pay up his Nobel Prize money as ransom.

Bryan Greenberg, Shawn Hatosy, Mary Steenburgen, Bill Pullman, Eliza Dushku, Danny DeVito and Ted Danson round out the ket cast. Jody Savin and Miller produced.

Miller and Savin hope to sign Rickman, DeVito and Dushku for the wine industry-themed Bottle Shock, which is set to go before the cameras on July 30.

"Nobel Son is a fast paced, fun caper, with a ton of plot twists in the vein of movies like Snatch and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels," Chartier said.

Hello, I am a longtime Rickman fan and lurker to this board. Thanks to all for the wonderful pictures, etc that have been posted during the last few weeks.

I enjoyed reading the article on Snape and that author's theory of what will happen to the Potions Master. I have found a good book that I think you will like on this subject. It's called "The Great Snape Debate." One side spells out the case for Snape's guilt, and the other spells out the case for Snape's innocence. The author of the essays for Snape's innocence is Joyce Millman, a very talented writer. For those of you who think Snape is a die hard Death Eater she makes a very good case for believing Snape is loyal to Dumbledore. I did some digging and found her live journal. http://joycemillman.livejournal.com/ At her journal you will see some of the other articles, essays, etc that she has written. It will also tell you which essays she wrote in the "Great Snape Debate." For some reason that isn't made clear in the book.

Variety has a review of Nobel Son. I shall cut and paste as I know their stuff doesn't stay up forever.

***********SPOILERS********************

A Gimme Five Prods./Prama presentation of an Unclaimed Freight production. Produced by Jody Savin, Randall Miller. Executive producers, Art Klein, Tom Soulanille, Michael Ravine. Co-producers, Ronald Savin, J.P. O'Neill, Jane Baum, Henry Suarez, John Faiz Kayyem.
Directed by Randall Miller. Screenplay by Jody Savin, Miller.

Eli Michaelson - Alan Rickman
Barkley Michaelson - Bryan Greenberg
Thaddeus James - Shawn Hatosy
Sarah Michaelson - Mary Steenburgen
City Hall - Eliza Dushku
Max Mariner - Bill Pullman
Gastner - Danny DeVito

Accusing "Nobel Son" of being over-the-top is like complaining the circus is too colorful. Flamboyance, in all its generic guises, at times seems to be the very raison d'etre behind Randall Miller's kidnapping thriller. Least effectively, such ostentation yields Danny DeVito's obsession-compulsion, strange character names and one-line backstories. Most prepossessingly, though, it flaunts Alan Rickman as a Nobel-winning scientist whose outrageous egomania lifts the pic far above the three-ring dog-and-pony-show. Uneven but enjoyably titillating black comedy should elate Rickman fans while pleasing aficionados of extra-flakey caper flicks.

Professor Eli Michaelson (Rickman) has just been awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry. The endowment transforms the prof's already insufferable narcissism into outright arrogance. For the rest of Michaelson clan, the Swedish coronation only adds insult to injury.

Helmer Miller and co-writer/wife Jody Savin, whose work ("Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School") has tilted toward the sweet and sentimental, here throw themselves into twisted villainy with gusto. Even the good characters, like Mary Steenburgen's Sarah, Rickman's long-suffering wife by night and a forensic pathologist by day, harbor unexpected depths of deviousness.

Michaelson's callow son Barkley (Bryan Greenberg), sole offspring and bitter disappointment (having chosen the social sciences), is finishing up his thesis on cannibalism (when, we wonder, will the gag pay off?) and trying to subsist on a measly paternal stipend of $35 a week. After a date with a weirdo poetess named City Hall (the irresistibly sexy Eliza Dushku), he is kidnapped.

Enter Thaddeus James (Shawn Hatosy), abductor, mechanical genius and advanced chemistry autodidact, claiming to be Barkley's illegitimate half-brother. Thaddeus alternately threatens and cajoles Barkley into joining him in his multimillion-dollar kidnap/extortion/revenge plot against their father.

With more story twists than a designer pretzel -- including an anonymous amputated thumb and a gratuitous corpse in a bathtub -- the adrenalin-fueled pic thankfully slows to a halt after only a few to many loop-de-loops.

Tech credits maintain the film's momentum throughout, Paul Oakenfold and Mark Adler's techno-beat rhythms pumping up the action with occasional breaks for irony. Michael Ozier's multi-angled lensing favors colorfully expressionistic backdrops to highlight Miller's boldly sardonic editing.

Camera (color, widescreen), Michael J. Ozier; editor, Miller; music, Paul Oakenfold, Mark Adler; music supervisor, Jonathan McHugh; production designer, Craig Stearns; costume designer, Kathryn Morrison; sound (Dolby Digital), Kelly Oxford; casting, Rick Pagano. Basileia - thanks for the link to that article.  It makes a lot of sense and, sadly, the writer is probably right that our beloved Potions Master is doomed.    There are some interesting theories out there....but it seems that most of them do not bode well for poor Severus.  Well, I guess we just have to look at it this way.  It means more screen time for AR in the last two films!!  Something that the current five are sorely lacking.  If anyone can do justice to Sevvie's swan song, it will be Alan.  So, if he's gotta go, let's hope JKR makes it incredibly DRAMATIC!!!  Waiting patiently for book 7  to discover poor Sevvie's fate.

Brilliant find,,,thanks Peek and thanks Claudia for putting it up. I do love the holding the mic thing, i could just sit there and watch his facial expressions. And the teeth comment, love it. His teeth are American , haa haa. There was a story about him getting his teeth done ( looked whiter and straiter ) so i guess thats true. Does anyone else notice that Alan is definitly a cheek chewer,,,,,,,,

Thanks Peek for this wonderful interview.

Btw. What's this part about his teeth?

And I could resist and so I did an orgy of screen shots.

You can download them from

YousendIt:

And from my GMX MediaCenter (for 10 days)

http://service.gmx.net/mc/QuxJ3bNOQlApk2EeknAx3Ds9mz1zOb

If you choose this way make sure your pop-up blooker is disabled for the site.

Push the button "GMX MediaCenter starten"

Then tick the box next to the file and choose from the "Datei" drop-down menue "Download".

The file has about 45 MB.

He said he went to the dentist to get wonky teeth. And then points to his own saying "Not that these are perfect." Coy smile. Points to his upper teeth "These are American." Ah ha, he must have gotten his upper teeth fixed in America. Yeah, well, would YOU trust British dentists???

Thanks again! That was just charming. *sigh*

Good morning all my AR pals!

dARkzorro93!!!!  I am speechless!  What a brilliant piece of work...and with my favorite AR piece too!  I haven't listened to that song in ages so it was beautiful to listen to against the backdrop of Jamie and Nina!  As I think of it, I haven't watched TMD in ages too.  I think a viewing of that is due this weekend.  Along with my new Perfume DVD. Thank you for sharing on YouTube and with a download.

As yall know, I am trying to become inspired to create a new look for us and the download haven.  Creativity is just not in me...this is why I envy all you pals sooo much!  *grin*

Thanks for the comments on the new look.  I'm taking each one to heart and there will be more changes coming.  I do agree that the light text on a dark background is a bit complicated to read so I'm working on what to do.

So, stay tuned...and ready to let me know what you think....good or bad!   Please don't feel bad if you have negative thoughts.  If you don't want to post them here, you can either post a private comment...or you can email me.

Hey what a change.

Thanks Claudia for your effort, changing is good. If you want my opinion I always thought that darker backgrounds always made it more hard and tired-full to read, especially if you have to take more than a couple of minutes staring at the screen, but that's just me this is a shared place and all of us should give an opinion. Don't be mad with me Claudia. Loved the curtains tough.

I don't know if this interview has been posted before...and AR doesn't specifically say anything about BShock but his reference to hopefully making another film with Randall Miller this summer is likely BS!!!

Moviehole--Exclusive Interview: Alan Rickman

I absolutely loved Sideways and I doubt very seriously BShock would be anything like it but I would love to see AR in a wine film!  Especially if its filmed in Napa and Sonoma counties!  I love that area.  Sweetie and I toured there on his HAWG and it was so much fun!

I was finally able to view the Perfume extras download....but it downloaded into 7 different segments -- some that lasted but a few seconds each.  Was this how it was supposed to be or was it supposed to be one long video clip?  Sorry I'm so lame at this.

No Hikity, unfortunately AR did not speak that long there.
I was talking about today's 'Breafast with the Arts' show on channel A & E.
Today's episode featured the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival; interviews and information regarding the films there.
The first segment of the show (the 10 minutes -more or less- that I mentioned) were dedicated to 'Nobel Son' and it included several glimpses of the cast talking about the movie: AR, Mary Steenburgen, Bill Pullman and some others.

I watched it but have nothing (nor the cheapest trinket) to record stuff on TV.

I quote Nahima:
The 'Nobel Son' segment was the first one and lasted around ten minutes approx. (probably less). When AR appeared I forgot to hear and so did not understand a single one of his words.
This is the measure of how gorgeous I found him.

Which one of all the videos do you refer to where he talks for 10 long minutes?? wow - please let me know so that I can fall off my chair too and just faint

Carolyn, it did not work for me either.
In the case this might help, the file must have a video extension; something like wvm or mov or avi (unless you zipped it = compressing to make it smaller).

I think "Snow Cake" premiered on DirecTV's On Demand service April 25th or so; that's when I was able to TiVo it.

It's playing on Pay-Per-View on various cable and satellite companies as part of IFC Films First Take (http://www.ifcfilms.com/).  Here's a bit to explain the philosophy behind it:

Quote:
"This new initiative will look to develop and provide a voice to the many critically acclaimed independent films that are shown in New York, Los Angeles, and various Film Festivals, but lost within the marketplace each year.  These films will be specifically distributed both theatrically and On Demand simultaneously, ensuring that each is guaranteed a nationwide release."

So I'm betting it was a tactical move by the film's producers to go with First Take in order to get the film more exposure.  Sadly, indie films just aren't getting the theater time they deserve, even in larger metro areas (so it's not just the small towns).  When "The Winter Guest" came out, I think it played one arthouse cinema in the D.C. Metro area for about a week--and I missed it.

I'd rather have seen "Snow Cake" on the big screen, but I was grateful not to have to wait until the R1 DVD.

About A&E Channel, I have this and I could record it but the thing is NOT listed as a program for tomorrow! It's the ordinary "televendas" (don't know this in English, those shows with people selling things for your kitchen and cars).

Hikity, that's the funny thing! Steak N Shake doesn't serve steaks! They serve "steak burgers"! It's a burger/shake/fries place that also has chili, chicken sandwiches, salads and most do breakfasts also. SNS is favorite naughty diversion for me. It's always a plain steakburger with cheese, cheese fries and either a shake (their strawberry fudge cheesecake sippable sundae is fabulous) or a vanilla coke. Oink.

I'm going to look and see if Snowcake is going to be available on my Charter On Demand. Can't believe I may see this movie on TV before I ever see it in a theater.

Hikity, Snow Cake has not been released on Region 1 yet, so it is not widely available here.  It is only playing in select theatres and will probably take forever to get to the Midwest where Dee and I live (and even then, it will probably only show in large cities, so Dee or I might have to make a long car trip to see it).  It is surprising, therefore, to see it on pay-per-view TV already.  I know at least one of AR's films was a direct-to-tv deal, but since he and Sigourney are doing so much publicity for this one I don't understand why it is showing in so few cinemas.

Ah well, I must just sit tight, be patient, and silently curse the cultural backwardness of my beloved home.

Forgot something:
Yesterday we had the "Lola Festival" in Berlin (German Film Awards):
TT and The Perfume got a lot of Lolas for the following:
best camera, best cut, best production design, best costumes, best sound design and BE received the 3rd place for best German film. Nevertheless, TT and BE were disappointed. However, imho I think it was justified as the film was not a pure German one. (Therefore, no actors/actresses in Perfume were even nominated).
"4 Minutes" won the golden Lola plus best actress and best female supporting role. Great film.
Have a wonderful weekend

A big thanks to all of you who have been working hard to get all this pix, infos, reports. Sue, Carolyn, Laura, sorry if I forgot of anyone, you all deserve gold medals signed by AR of course.
I saw the Nobel son trailer and got crazy to see the movie, it seems to be very intense and AR performance is, for me , totally unexpected. I've got to see more of his movies(shame on me). But it's not really my fault cause some of his movies don't even exist in Portugal (like closet land) and there's the problem of translated movie titles, i've been working hard to find all the translation and then see the movies. But it's an effort I take gladly. Hope Snow Cake and Nobel Son come to Portugal soon.
Sorry about that.

You can download a 58MB version of this new video Carolyn found here.  I tried to edit it down just to the AR parts but kept losing the sound.  AR starts at 3:07.

It's screencapped at my LJ.

Thanks Carolyn!

Thanks Carolyn! is there any more Rickman after the comments about the Nobel prize for acting? It kept cutting out for me and quite honestly I don't know if I could stand ploughing through any more of the ditzy blonde routine!!

I think so, Cats. I just kind of skimmed thru the others but I don't think there was anything else. Each video makes up a part of one show, so I would assume that the TFF piece is only in the first one.

New Tribeca video w/Alan: I've been trying to find this for a couple of days. In many of the photos we took on the Red Carpet, Alan was being interviewed by a blonde reporter. Her name is Danielle McGimsie. She's a reporter for "Star Daily", a Canadian tv show.

The link for the video is at: http://www.star-tv.com/stardaily  click on play video, Part 1, April 30. The Tribeca report is the first one.

Thank you, CatsPlay, for the quick response and your thoughts about the movie. It seems to me that the trailer showed very much how the actual film really is like: very fast, complicated, great importance of (that kind of) music, a very different film. Well, I couldn't do anything with the trailer to be honest, but was nevertheless very curious about the whole movie. Trailers are not always that reliable, I think. But you enjoyed it, that's great. Well, let's see if "Nobel Son" ever comes to the cinemas in Germany. *sigh* I think I would love to give it a try, especially because it's kind of fascinating that it seems so hard to talk about the movie or describe it. That's interesting.

re: Nobel Son, I'm not really very good at 'reviewing' movies and especially this one.  I think this movie is kind of hard to talk about because it is extremely fast moving and complicated.  I can say that I enjoyed it a lot.  While AR is of key importance to the plot, it really is an ensemble piece moreso than a vehicle for him.  Having said that there is plenty of screentime for AR in the movie.  I eventually may talk more about it on my LJ but probably won't get to it until next week sometime.  Perhaps Carolyn or one of the others has some thoughts.

It's just so great to read all these amazing LJ reports about the weekend! I am really grateful for all these pictures and lively sharing of everything that happened! A great thank you again!!!
Just a tiny, little question for everyone who had the opportunity to watch "Nobel Son"... I am so curious what you have to say about the movie?! Have I missed reviews or is it just - really understandable - that everything concerning AR directly was much more exciting and important to share until now? Well, perhaps it's just me, but I'm really looking forward to your movie reviews in addition. No pressure, hihi.
Have a nice day everyone!

Oops, quickie here.  The 174MB clip from the Today Show is still sitting on my computer at home.  I'll try to upload it to YouSendIt or RapidShare tonight.  I thought there would be a huge difference between it and the 50MB downloadable version but there really isn't that much difference that I could see.

If you want it let me know and I'll try to upload it to one of the temporary services.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I haven't been on the GB since for three days......WHOA!......what an explosion of Alan-y goodness!

Thanks to all of you who are sharing your wonderful experiences with us.  I've still got a lot of live journals to read.  (SnoKat, yours was great!)  I still have to read Dee's, CatsPlay's, Reedpipes.....oh, I know there's somebody else's I'm forgetting.  But what fun!  It really feels like you are almost right there when you read these personal encounters.  Thanks again to all who are so generous not only with their stories but sharing photos and uploading videos.  I will always say that this is the greatest group of fans anywhere.

Lastly, a very HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!!  to sue!  Wishing you all the best!
