I'm so glad you liked the "Lovely Cakes" once you finished making them!  Sorry the toffee bits turned out to be so much trouble. Anyone else making them may want to find an easier way to crush them??  You might try wrapping them up in a dishtowel and then smashing with a hammer?  I'm lucky to be able to buy the pieces in a bag!  It's so funny you dressed as Trelawney for Halloween. I was Trelawney last year and few kids knew who I was. I decided to be Prof. MacGonagal. I found a perfect long green velvet dress, Witch's hat with a feather and used a plastic chopstick as a wand. I sat on my front porch, propped up my full-size "Sorcerer's Stone" movie poster behind six candles and sat in a chair reading " Half Blood Prince". No other light was on. The kids really loved it! They were scared of me too, but not too scared! They looked from me to the poster and back at me again!

The school age kids I asked if they had done their homework, the little kids if they had been good that day. They all answered very seriously!  If they were really into it, I'd tell them they just missed Professor Snape, that he and I had had an argument and he called me "A cow" and I called him " An overgrown bat!" and he had gone stomping off. Then I'd say, " You know how he is!!" The kids would really go along with the whole thing! What fun that was!

I made the Lovely Cakes tonight (also thinking they would be great for Halloween).  They are wonderful.  Even though I didn't make them quite right (it's surprisingly difficult to translate US measurements into UK ones - for me, anyway).  'English Toffee' was a p in the a.  All I could get was the supermarket's own brand of toffee. Individually wrapped, had to be chopped, and was so brittle the bits ricochetted off the walls to distant parts of the kitchen.

Worth it, though.   

Happy Halloween, ladies.  It's almost midnight here in the UK, and I can now take off my Sybil Trelawney costume!

Rickwoman, well, I wouldn't call it x-rated maybe PG (parental guidence)  . I had no idea that she couldn't see the banner, though. So what did she actually mean??

However, now that's it's been brought up about AR not liking to sign Snape pictures, etc. IMHO, (in my humble opinion), when many people, including adolesent children, see Snape as a sex symbol, it's understandable that he doesn't want to be associated with Snape so often. There's a widespread reaction all over the internet of Snape sexual fantasies.

Just recently I was browsing AR sites, saw one that had a quote of mine beside it, clicked on it, and all these obscene photos appeared all over the screen, NOT wanted!

It's annoying that someone can go to a site and add this junk when I have pop-up blocker. Plus, it was on the well-known AR Guestbook (Suzanne's) in an Archives page, which is unfair to her.  So, I didn't get to re-read my post. (Someone had said that I invited everyone here, ARDH, but I only suggested to one person to try ARDH. See how rumors get started? darn-knit. 

I agree with Chris - it does look more like Ralph F. than Alan.  Good find though, sue, interesting site.  I hadn't know about this effort or AR's involvement.

This is a by-the-by, but I went to see 'Rock n Roll' in London last night.  Our cab was late, and while we were waiting for it outside the theatre, David Calder came out of the stage door.  I went to say hello and told him we'd enjoyed the show. It was only later I discovered he's in Perfume, playing the Bishop. 

I couldn't help thinking this wisp of a connection is the nearest I'll ever get to AR  Especially if his few-and-far-between stage appearances are on OTHER CONTINENTS!!!

teleschau: Haben Sie Ihren schauspielerischen Höhepunkt bereits erreicht?

Rickman: Manchmal fühlt man sich besonders begabt, doch das geschieht sehr selten. Aber es gibt Momente, in denen ich auf meine Arbeit stolz bin. Das Problem ist, dass das Ziel der Perfektion wie der Horizont ist: Es ist immer in der Ferne zu sehen, aber kaum zu erreichen.

teleschau: Apropos Selbstanalyse: Fühlen Sie sich beim Älterwerden dazu verpflichtet, immer die Fassung zu bewahren?

Rickman: Angela Pell, die Drehbuchautorin von "Snow Cake", problematisiert im Film genau diese Erwartungshaltung. Sie hat selbst einen autistischen Sohn und kennt die damit verbundenen Schwierigkeiten. So lebt Sigourney Weavers Charakter ihre Emotionen aus, ohne Rücksicht auf die Umwelt.

teleschau: Wie in der Szene, als sie wild auf dem Trampolin herumhüpft?

Rickman: Wer weiß, vielleicht ist es tatsächlich eine gute Sache, mitten am Tag oder auch in der Nacht in den Hinterhof zu rennen und ausgelassen auf einem Trampolin herumzuspringen, als gebe es nichts Schöneres auf der Welt. Vielleicht sollten wir das alle mal ausprobieren.

teleschau: Haben Sie es schon gemacht?

Rickman: Ich lebe in London, und die Briten sind bekannt für ihre skrupellose Boulevardpresse.

teleschau: Die Briten gelten auch als reserviert ...

Rickman: Diese Verschlossenheit ist ein Klischee, das nicht wirklich stimmt. Wir Briten sind so leidenschaftlich wie jeder andere auch. Ich merke an mir selbst, dass ich heutzutage bewusst darauf achte, dass meine persönlichen Gefühle, aber auch politischen Ansichten in meine Arbeit einfließen. Ich sehe den Sinn der Schauspielerei darin, aktiv mit der Welt verbunden zu sein, und nicht darin, für sich selbst Werbung zu machen.

teleschau: Hat sich das nicht nach "Harry Potter" verändert, indem Sie zum Star aller Heranwachsenden wurden?

Rickman: Eigentlich hat sich nichts geändert. Ich spreche auch nicht gern über diese Filme. Denn die Kinder sollen sich ihre Illusion bewahren können, dass es keine Schauspieler sind, die Rollen spielen, sondern dass es eine verzaubernde Geschichte ist, an der sie teilhaben. Das ist wie mit dem Weihnachtsmann. Von dem will auch niemand den echten Namen wissen.

teleschau: Können junge Leute heutzutage etwas vom Kino lernen?

Rickman: Das kommt darauf an: Ich habe vor einiger Zeit bei einem kontroversen Theaterstück über eine junge pro-palästinensische Friedensaktivistin Regie geführt. Es war umwerfend, wie viele junge Leute den Zuschauersaal förmlich in Besitz nahmen. Sie mussten nicht mit den Ansichten der Protagonistin übereinstimmen, doch ihre Leidenschaft zog die Zuschauer in den Bann. Kino kann das auch leisten, es müssen nur - und das ist wirklich wichtig - Informationen fließen.

What a wonderful report and what a great picture! I noticed on your "My Space " information that you and I are the same height, 5'3". Now I know what I would have looked like next to AR if I hadn't worn those very high heels! (I was "posing" as a medium-height person!)

Yeah, Rima is tiny, like a dolly, and what concerns her character (according to your report and others') she is absolutely kind and if she smiled so much, it meant she had an excellent mood. Alan is not less nice and I am sure you did like that! I am glad that you could witness al this, it's a good thing!

Just getting back to FL from seeing MNiRC on Oct 24th with the Talkback that night. What a night to remember! I arrived with my friend Diane about 6:30pm a little too early to go inside the theatre. The lady behind the ticket counter said to come back about 7ish and we could wait in the lobby because it was cold out. We hung out at McD's for a bit and went back to the theatre. It was about 7:15 and some people were outside selling a newspaper that was contoversial. One of the theatre managers had to go out and ask them to leave. At that time Rima walked inside the lobby and proceded to walk into the main lobby. We were watching in amazment because she is soooo tiny! She then walked back out from the main lobby and went outside. Our hearts were beating because we knew that Mr Rickman had to be there! YAY! Then one of the ladies from the theatre came to the little lobby where we were and as she walked by me she said "wish me luck" and I said good luck and some of the people who were waiting started to laugh. I thought she was going out to shoo off the newspaper people again but nooo she was escorting Rima back inside where she went back into the main lobby and accidently knocked into me with her purse and said "i'm sorry sweetie" and i said " thats ok Ms Horton" and she let out a really BIG smile and yes it was to The Man! He walked passed the door and looked at us all in the lobby and then walked away and then we were all let in to the main lobby. As we were going towards our seats which were upstairs, Alan and Rima were right by the staricase and he was reading a letter aloud to her. She looked up at us and smiled and Alan then looked up and smiled. We were frozen by that time. We didnt know if we should take the opportunity to speak or to wait. So we chose to wait in case it was rude to approach them before the play. We found our seats and the play began. Megan Dodds did a remarkable job playing Rachel Corrie. When the show was over we were told we could all move downstairs for the talkback. A lot of people didnt stay so there was lots of room. We stayed in the back and Rima was directly in front of us because we had to move down so others could sit instead of standing against the wall. Seeing Alan on the stage was intresting. He scans the audience and played with his fingers and stretched his legs out. The moderator didnt start off on a good note IMHO because she made a remark about Alan not liking journalists and he commented that she was assuming and that got him a round of applause. The rest of the talkbacks were about the controversy over censorship and editing the play and asking Alan what was his agenda for the play. For which he explained. It seemed like the panel didnt want to really answer the questions and they were like talking in circles. So after this was over people were leaving the theatre and as i was leaving Rima walked passed me again and smiled.I saw Alan and i was waiting for him to pass by because i wasnt sure if I should approach him or not. I happen to look away and Rima was right in front of me and she smiled and nodded towards Alan and I took that as it was ok to approach him. She is an absolute doll! She was juat watching from a distance with a smile. I got my courage up and went for it. He was talking to someone so i waited for him to finish and then he looked up at me and smiled and nodded to that it was my turn. I was trembling but i finally got to speak to him and it was amazing! He looked at me and smiled then he leaned over and put his ear out so he could hear me. I got my wish, i thanked him in person for signing the pics for my son who had surgery a few years ago and for my God Daughter who has cancer.He then thanked me for coming all the way from FL to see the play and he signed the playbill for me and my friend. He was generous with his time so we thanked him and went outside. About 5 minutes later he walked out with Rima and a few friends and waved to us and said good night and proceded to the resturaunt next door. I just plucked up the courage and hollered to Mr Rickman which he turned around on his heal, I asked him if I could have my picture with him and he said "absolutely!" I thanked him again and I thanked Rima and his friends for letting me take an extra minute with him. They all laughed then they went to the resturaunt and we watched as he held the door for everyone before he went in. I left with the most wonderful feeling in the world! I saw Kate at the Finding Neverland premiere a couple of years ago and she does seem to exude glamour and real down to earthness. She obviously has a good sense of fun to appear in Ricky Gervais' Extras as a foul-mouthed actress dressed as a nun!!

Yeah, but he was holding hands with Kate. It was just Kate! It seems she must be a very endearing person because I've heard other celebs gush about how nice she is. And she may have grabbed him! I have several pictures of him hugging and kissing Emma on my screen saver. And nooooooo, I haven't Photoshoped my face in. (mainly cause I don't have Photoshop).

I am so glad that MNiRC has sparked discussion and conversation here in the US.  I lean towards the thought that maybe AR and KV did this play in order to spark thought and discussion.  I don't even mind reading a negative comment or two but when the negativity gets down right mean and hurtful....I just roll my eyes  and consider the source.

Loved your  "Cookie Land " picture!  That's not exactly the same look I got but you're definately in the neighborhood!  I've never seen a more darling look on anyone's face before! It was full of conflicted emotions for sure. If it makes anyone feel better, he did say "We've been enjoying them " , implying that they are being passed around to cast and crew. Of course Kathy also reminded me that they ended up with a total of four dozen! They are small, just two bites apiece! Now I feel guilty!! Honestly, he looks great! This is what comes of raising a big family with lots of giant sons who are bottomless pits and are all lots bigger than you. You just want to do the "Mom" thing for guys! Snowcake - 23 cinemas in its opening week??? And they wonder why they cant make the £3m it cost it film!! It is a good film, why such a few cinemas?

Whilst doodling about the web I found the UK Film Box Office site that lists the weekly and running totals for movies still on release.

Snowcake is at No.40 after 7 weeks release  and it's total take to date is £89,205. It's highest position was No 27 in it's opening week when it showed in 23 cinemas. It's lowest No.43 when it showed in 7 cinemas.

At Hampstead Marc Evans said it cost £3m to make (did I remember that right?) so they are going to need some good takings around the World and good dvd sales too.

Oh, good pictures. That’s funny - when I found the pics on GettyImages, I wanted to post them, but just in a minute I saw that sue had already shared them all. Lol

As for Alan’s wearing, I do agree that he’s down to earth, but he does match everything perfectly! He’s got a very good taste and he seems to be choosy about what he puts on himself every time. I’ve noticed that most of the time he does not wear suits - his jackets and trousers differ. I mean, the trousers are grey, but the coat is black and velvet (just for example). If we peer into many his photos we would see that he does adore jeans, I suppose all know this. It’s indeed the most comfortable clothes even when you’ve got a Festival or Premiere.

For anyone who gets a chance at any of these talk backs to ask a question, could you ask one for me. Can someone ask Alan if he could hold the play over until July 2007 when i arrive there for my honeymoon with Keith. I really want to see that play. I would pay 25, 50 or even 100 to see the play. Not just because of Alan directing it but because i have had many serious conversations on the topic of this play and would love to see the story of Racheal Corrie played out on stage........

but something tells me that he wont do it. Maybe you guys could bribe him with some homeade and grandma made Butter Tarts, some  Canadian McKintosh Toffee the new Rufus Wianwright CD and i might be tempted to throw in a good ole "Saskatchewan" t-shirt. Hey guys! So I came home to NY because I have a little break from college and I decided to go see Rachel Corrie and I'm so glad I went. It's really an amazing play. I had a choice between today and tomorrow but I saw there was a talkback today so I sprung for a ticket. I didn't see Alan Rickman on the list of talkback people outside but after the play, there he was so I was really happy!

By the way, I was able to buy rush tickets 2 hours before the play and they were only $25! That's definitley something to consider if you're worried about the cost of the play. Just make sure you get there in time. There was a guy outside trying to buy tickets from people because he couldn't get in. I was tempted to sell it to him for more (oh, I'm a bad person but I'm jobless at the moment and college is expensive!) but I'm glad I didn't.

Anyways, the talkback was really interesting. Alan Rickman answered a bunch of questions about his intentions and choices in making the play. They seemed a little rehearsed, as I'm sure he gets these questions all the time, but his answers were really eloquent. He actually got applause for one answer!

I'll write more later about the questions. Part of the experience for the talkback was stuff that's not neccesarily Alan Rickman related as there were other people there as well, but it's still interesting. I'm not sure if I should post it here. What do you think? I'll definitley post more about Rickman later though. Yay

Wait,,,,,,,before anyone takes my previous post seriously I must say somthing. I truly love the way Alan dresses  and i love the way he shows up in the same outfits, shirts, jackets  many times, I will tell you why. To me, Alan is not superficial, he is real and he is so not into himself like some other actors. He isnt about what to wear, he isnt about wearing top of the line Armani suits ( although the suit he wore in Die Hard was amazing), and he definitly isnt about stealin any limelight from other people ( no one said he was anyways). He knows he looks good in a black tie and/or a tuxedo like any man out there would, and i am sure he knows when to wear such an outfit. He is down to earth, "this is me" , no nonsense type of dresser and thats good enough for me. I have to be honest, the Berlin Film Festival look with the high collar and long coat did it for me, that was an awesome look for him and it has become one of my favs. As far as the flower shirt, its one huge flower and go for it Alan, as long as you are wearing what you think is comfortable tis good enough for me........

Ok, you guys can shoot me if you can find me but i dont think that is the most appealing dress that Megan has on either. At least it matches Alan's shirt. hee hee.........

Dear Dumpy,

You can thank my friend Kathy for the pictures of Alan, Rima and Chevelle.  I was actually on the sidewalk looking at them from the front and decided not to take photos while they spoke as it would have been right in Alan's face.  Kathy was to the side and slightly behind them. On our trip she saved the day, as I mostly froze but Kathy has a military background so she let her "survival training" kick in and got the photos!  I recommend to all to have a travelling companion who's got some "true grit"! Heaven knows I was next to helpless once I was pinned in the famous AR stare!  I am working on posting the three encounters Kathy and I had on my brand new LiveJournal. I hope to get something up tomorrow. I also hope I won't have to call in my "technical consultant" again about moving the photos around! Today I'm taking my photos, autographs etc to work to show around. I know some "Potter" fans will be in to see us today. I may keep a lovely 5"X7" photo there permanently!

You know whats great about that picture besides you guys is Rima. How she sits back and lets the attention go to him, she doesnt croud him or anything. Awesome.

I am trying to put my photos in a photobucket account.  It's very slow going. Please be patient everyone.

I assume that means British actors get less.
  As a woman, I know all about getting less pay for the same work, even here in the USA.  It seems the one with the money gets to write the rules and usually for their own advantage.
Maybe AR will help clear the way for at least the future actors to get paid better. Things change so darn slowly. 

I agree with you, Sno! I don't know what his original motivation was in accepting the role, but he had to have known (considering the popularity of the books even before the movies were made) that he was associating himself with a role that would last throughout his lifetime. "Serious" actors (i.e. in the Shakespearean vein) usually consider superficial blockbuster movies to be beneath them. You are definitely right in the "love/hate" relationship.

Another problem is that British actors, when appearing in American films, don't get paid the US equity rate. They get paid according to British Equity. That's something that Alan has been fighting against.

SnoKat : I think that he likes Sev because it's a great character to play but he doesn't like to sign Snape stuffs because it's more popular than a Jamie stuff for example, and that he doesn't want it to finish on Ebay. I only hope that he's not tired of playing that wonderful character because there is so much to do for the 2 next movies I really hope that he'll do them. But I totally understand that he's angry that people call him Sev because he's not lol, it should be boring lol 

That's Megan Dodds, I've seen many clear pics of her, although in others, her eyes are kind of blue. I wonder what her voice is like? does she have a nice, loud, easy to hear voice? Well, no matter. I'd go see the play but AR sounds so intimidating from what I read of others meeting him, and I just know I would have to at least attempt to see him. 

I thought my posts were so simply written that people would actually think I was under-educated! 

I understand why AR doesn't seem to like Snape, I don't like him either!

Wonderful photo!!  That's Megan Dodds on the right, correct?  I mean it looks like her but the hair looked a bit long so I wasn't 100% sure.

New Jan--I REALLY believe that Alan has a "love-hate" relationship with the role of Snape. And I bet he'd never admit to it! It has made him internationally known, it's made him money, but I think he hates when people associate HIM with that character. And I wonder...would he ever refuse if someone asked him to sign a Col Brandon photo or a P.L. O'Hara photo? It's like he has a particular aversion to Snape. Perhaps because he's made Snape too real for many of us. He flushed out the character more than JKR could have ever hoped. But then again, most all the other actors did too. Maybe he feels "stuck" with it. Maybe he feels the role is actually a little silly. Maybe he views it as having "sold out" for that part. I doubt he'll ever REALLY say.

I bought the German CINEMA mag today for this shortish AR interview in regard to "Snow Cake"; it is good to find another interview of him, as he so rarely gives them. So far I have not read anywhere that "Snow Cake" will show in Switzerland, too, but I keep my fingers crossed! I did see it in the UK however, but I want to see it again! For our UK fans I have seen on Amazon UK that "Snow Cake" will be released on DVD on February 05, 2007! And to all German fans who will shortly have the pleasure to watch "Snow Cake" in the cinema: ENJOY! It is a truly wonderful movie!

There IS an ego to British actors, but it isn't the demand for the biggest trailers and their own Fitness Instructor etc etc...  It's more the 'Darling, you were WONDERFUL', theatrical ego.

I can't agree with the sour grapes.  AR constantly explains to interviewers that he is there 'to serve the part', or as he says in this interview 'as a channel' for the author's words.  If AR has ambition, it would appear, from what he's said, that it's driven by the desire to portray his character as truthfully and as thoughtfully as possible, not for stardom or a Hollywood pay packet.  Isn't he a socialist, for goodness sakes?

I am of the theory that his - how should I say it? - 'dislike' of being associated with Snape is because it is so international.  The films are a huge success and now a great many people, who don't know his work better, only associate him with that role. He is now 'more' internationally famous since playing Snape, and he doesn't appear to like that.

However, I must remember that our man is a bit of a maverick, and remember also the quote 'I have never been sexually voracious.  But perhaps I'll be sexually voracious tomorrow.'  I must never imagine I know very much about him at all.

Some of it I heard before. But his comment about American stars having bigger egos than his Britain colleagues makes me wonder if that's about "sour grapes" - the story where the fox tells everyone the grapes are sour because he can't reach them himself.

Maybe if he was indulged a little more and was less spartan and self-effacing, he would relax more and have less of the stagefright he complains about.     I have a hunch his Britain colleagues think just as much about themselves as everyone else in the world, maybe they just don't talk about themselves as much. In fact, here in America people who don't talk much about themselves are suspect  ,   but in any case --

I'm finally replying to your question. Yes, I'd be glad to post the recipe for the "Lovely Cakes". Is it OK to put it here on the Guestbook? Do other people want it as well? It is not in metric measurements so you guys are on your own with conversions! I never got the hang of metric conversion. Sorry! I just got my photos from Kathy today of us with AR.  I'm happy to say they turned out pretty well. However, I did take them to a store, scanned and cropped them with some photo enhancements. I guess the disc I have will have to do, they won't appear cropped etc. Once I figure out how to do it, I'll try to post them . It may take a while!  If I can do the enhanced ones somehow, that would be even better.  I can't wait to take my 8"X10" enlargement to work monday!

Regional film subsidy board, Filmstiftung NRW, has launched a probe into the financing of Tom Twyker's "Perfume" in connection with the ongoing investigation of jailed producer and fund operator, Andreas Schmid and his VIP Medienfonds.

NRW provided $943,000 US in funding for the 63million dollar movie. VIP was among additional sources of financing.

According to Munich prosecutors investigating Schmid, VIP officially put up $31million of the pic's budget, but financing figures registered with the Filmstiftung NRW put VIP's contribution at only 5 million.

Filmstiftung NRW is looking to clear up the disparity and is hiring an independent auditor to examine the film's financing structure.

Maryland - loved the 'ambush' story.  Actually, I snorted my tea at reading: '(he) didn't seem to notice we had basically frozen in place'.

Are you going to share the 'lovely cakes' recipe with us, so we can all have the same taste bud experience as AR?  (We don't have 'cookie bars' in the UK, that's probably why he called them cakes.  I'm imagining them to be a kind of flapjack or shortbread?)

PETER HALL MAYBE DOING 'OLD TIMES' IN THE UK?  This is very exciting news.  Bit of a coincidence that of all the Pinter plays, he chooses this one.  Can it be connected with the NY plans? Oh please, Oh please.  Since I discovered AR, I've been too busy having babies to see him on stage, and I really, really want to.  Pinter is by no means my favourite playwright, but for AR, I'll sit through it.

 Yes, AR was definately eating something, maybe an appetizer?  It took forever for their large party to be served.  Kathy and I had finished our dinners already. We considered hanging around, but after the aforementioned "table ambush"  in which we looked up and AR was headed directly for us, then proceeded to praise at length the gifts we had given him: the cookie bars which he called "lovely cakes" (How cute is that?), also a coffee table book on Jefferson's estate Monticello, ( Perfect for your graphic designer/historian type) and I also included a tape of my son's student films from NYU and a little about him, solely for AR's amusement. AR proceeded to talk to us about all of these things and didn't seem to notice we had basically frozen in place after his unexpected visit to our table. If he had sat down I would have died on the spot! After a few minutes he went back to sit by Rima and seemed to be explaining who these women were!   By the way, more than once I caught Rima looking up at him adoringly and he was often bending down and speaking almost in her ear! They seemed to be very sweet to each other. It's nice to see after all the years together! I was very happy he has her! In any event, we felt it just didn't get any better than that and would leave them in peace to enjoy their dinners. I don't know the precise time. I think I left a dangling participle somewhere in the paragraph above. Sorry about that, to any English teachers!

Yea!!! I hope that means ticket sales are very good! The good news is also at Playbill.com!

Sue, as far as I can determine, he wasn't the one who was supposed to be directing in NY. Another interesting thing is that at the showing of "Snow Cake" in Hampstead, someone mentioned that "Old Times" was going to be in London first, then NY.

RE: the "Old Times" Broadway cancellation....I found a little blurb at What's on Stage.com dated October 3 that said Peter Hall (founder of RSC) would be directing his version of "Old Times" next year in London. Hmm...wonder if there's a corelation between the two reports?

Weaver - I'm pretty sure you are mistaken about the location of Inside the Actors Studio.  I know they have recently moved, but according to the information I can find their new location is at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University in NYC. 

Alan always seems keen to help out young people interested in theater and acting.  It would be so nice if he would make an appearance.  I live in hope.

I don't think it's really saving the video to  your computer when you right click.  I think it's just saving a 'reference'.  I've been trying for awhile to get the file to save off but can't get it for the life of me.

So it does! I'll be darned. I tried left-clicking and got an error but it worked with the right-click. Now it works both ways.

Hi!  I'm still waiting for Kathy to bring me the photos of us with AR. I'll get them tomorrow.  Hopefully I'll figure out how to post them.  Also, I wanted to add to Chevelle's recollections at the resturant, I was directly across from Alan at his table and he was eating something, but I couldn't say what, also Kathy peeked at him and he was gesturing with a shish-ke-bab in his hand A La the french fry from the other dining reports.  We'd love to tell more about that but we were so worried he'd notice us looking that we hardly looked at him! That's how he was able to ambush us at our table. But that's another story to come later!

I've been thinking (I know....don't strain yourself, Vicki) it would be great if, while Alan is in New York, he could appear on Inside the Actors Studio.  I've checked out their website but there is no option to contact anyone.  When you hit "contact" you end up being directed to Bravo's e-mail (Bravo is the cable station that airs ItAS in the states).  Does anyone know a way to contact ItAS or James Lipton or anyone in a position to suggest that they are CRAZY if they don't grab Alan off the streets while he is in town?!?  Maybe someone from the list has an inside track?  I'd love to see him on that show.

Thanks for sharing your special time you had meeting Alan and Rima. It is always nice to read this. And I am glad, too, that they were so nice to you. Something you will never forget. I am glad for you. I met Alan once during the NAS concert in 2004 and he was very friendly, but not lauging a lot. But, he was nice and when I gave him something he thanked me twice with a very sweet smile. Unfortunately, Rima was not with him then.

I just wondered.... you heard her talk that night... how does her voice sound? I really wonder. Hope you don't mind me asking this.

I have got to give you a lot of credit for keeping your wits about you during your meetings with AR. Kathy said I was just about "stupefied" and she ended up taking matters in hand or else we would have probably not had a single picture. As it was, we took very few. So, unfortunately I can't tell you what was on the shirt in question, fish or safety pins. Honestly, all I can say is "shirt? What shirt?" I am mailing AR a letter today complimenting him on the play (again) and thanking him for being so kind to us. I'm also including the recipe for the "lovely cakes", even though they're cookie bars, I guess it's a term they don't use in the UK!  I've been smacking myself for my 'deer in the headlights" reaction to being in AR's presence but I guess you never know how you'll react do you? Basically I just watched that wonderfully expressive face and couldn't believe he was speaking to me! (Fans self!) As we say here in Virginia, "Lord, have mercy!!!"

We arrived at Minetta Lane around 7:30pm Saturday. We did check the Bellavitae for AR hoping I'd be just as lucky as you were but he wasn't in there. I was afraid maybe he wasn't going to be there at all that night. When I entered the theater I started looking around for him and then there he was in front of me talking to a few ladies. I slowly walked by him and smiled. Then we went to find our seats. I was surprised to find out that our seats were in the front row almost dead center of the stage. I thought I had bought second row tickets. Anyhow, I was happy except I couldn't see Alan from that spot. I was wishing at that moment my tickets were for seats in the 7th row because he was standing directly across from them outside the door. I didn't see him again until we meet up with him outside after the play. He came out and didn't hang out very long before he took off towards Minetta Street. We followed him in a fast walk, well more like a slight run to the end of Minetta Lane. This is were I noticed Maryland and Kathy who were also following him. Then he disappeared around the corner. We were still 1/4 of the street back and thought we might have lost him when we saw him enter the glass door of the Tavern through it's side window. As I passed the window he passed it inside. We hurried in and saw him walk to the back of the restaurant where many others from the play were as well. One of the waiters asked if we wanted drinks or dinner. We had already eaten before the play so we just went with drinks. Bad idea. He seated us at the front of the restaurant. So we tried changing our minds and asked for desert. That didn't work either. He just brought it to us at the same table. Then we asked if we could use the bathroom which was in the back so we could see just what was going on. We walked into the back and there AR was sitting at the table closest to the bathroom. He was sitting right in front of the hallway that led to the bathroom. His chair was pushed out pretty far and we had to squeeze by to get to it. I brushed his shoulders while passing him which didn't seem to have effected him because he didn't shove in. While my friend used the bathroom because I didn't have to go I stood out in the hallway about 4 feet from him and just watched him talk to his friends for a few minutes. Then we squeezed by him again and still it didn't phase him. We went back to our seats and I decided to ask the waiter if he had any tables left for dinner. He brought us back there and seated us two tables away from his. There was another table between his and ours where Megan Dodds, Katherine Viner and a bunch others were sitting. Alan was sitting with Rima and some friends. We ordered only a salad and a soup because we were not very hungry. I tried not to look over at him too much and a few times we made eye contact. Every time he talked the floor seemed to vibrated under my feet. My friend told me she couldn't feel it, but I could. Amongst the voices of everyone in that room I was able to hear his voice clear as a bell.

At one point he got up and came over to the table near us and gave one of the girls a hug. Then he started laughing with her and talking with his hands. At this point he was 3 feet away from us. He stood there talking to her for a few minutes then went back to his seat. Someone from the table handed Megan a gift and shortly after she got up and said see you guys tomorrow and left. After awhile people started clearing out and soon it was only a few left at AR's table. I couldn't help but notice he wasn't eating, only drinking wine. Everyone else had ordered food. I don't know just how many glasses of wine he had but it seemed like the waiter refilled his glass quite a bit. A little while later the bill was brought over and Alan paid for it. We figured he would be leaving shortly so we stayed a bit longer. A few others got up and left but some other guy came over and started chatting with Alan. By this time it was like 1:00am and we were getting tired so we got up and left. We went outside and my friend had a smoke. When she finished I told her to light another so it didn't look like we were just standing there. Then she lit another, and another and then another. And she still swears I have given her lung cancer. Finally he came out and that's when he said, "oh my, have you been waiting all this time?"

Here are a few more photos from that evening. These are the two his friend took of us outside the Tavern. They aren't the greatest because my eyes were shut in them and not to mention it was very late.

Take notice of the shirt he was wearing that night. I didn't realize it until I looked at these pictures. If I hadn't been so tired I may have realized and I could have solved the fish & safety pin debate. Oh well, maybe Maryland noticed.

The next night was opening night. We got down to Minetta Lane around 8:30pm thinking the play would be getting out around that time. When we got there no one was around. Only a black escalade sat in the road near the back door of the the theater. The theater was dark and nothing was going on. Shortly after, a photographer showed up and then 2, then 3. Then a black limo pulled up. I figured one of them was for Alan and figured we wouldn't get to see too much of him. Soon the play let out and more photographers showed up. They went inside while some people came out. There were security people inside that kept looking out the curtains at us in the street. It seemed like they were planning a fast exit. Some more people came out and they ended up getting in the escalade and limo. Then I looked up and noticed Sigourney Weaver heading towards me. I pointed it out to my friend and we tried to get a photo but she went back inside. The theater was clearing out. We headed to that side because we were across the street. This is when my friend asked either Maryland or Kathy not sure which is which, if she was waiting for Mr. Rickman. We recognized that they were the same girls from the night before. She said of course. More vehicles showed up and more people got in them. Then a black Yukon pulled up. I thought for sure it was for Alan. A big garbage truck came down the street and it was too wide to clear the Yukon which was parked across the street of the theater. So it had to pull forward up the street. I saw Alan stick his head out of for a moment as if he were looking for the Yukon then went back in. A moment later Rima came out and Alan followed. He seemed a little confused like he wasn't sure which way he wanted to go. He started going to the left and then headed to the right. I had my video camera out but it wasn't on.

I couldn't work the buttons I was trying to hurry. When I got it on I couldn't record because I was just too close to him. I felt rude and didn't want to stick it in his face. He was walking rather quickly. Rima saw my camera and said, "Oh did you want to get a picture?" That's what made Alan stop and notice me. So he came over and that's when I explained I had my eyes shut in the some of the other pictures and he asked if I'd like to take another. As soon as we did he asked, "Were you're eyes open that time, and smiled." I laughed and said I think so. Then he thanked me for my gift and continued up the street.

I still apologize Maryland. I noticed you walked over to the other side of the street as I was talking to him and as soon as he turned to walk away you snapped a picture.

Yes, that was me and my friend you saw both nights taking photos. How funny... I wondered if you were from the GB. You gave AR gifts too? So did I. I gave him a box of chocolate truffles and a singing card from Hallmark. Also I gave him a couple portrait drawings I've done of him over the years. We waited 3 and 1/2 hours inside Minetta Tavern and another 1/2 outside just to hand it to him. When did you end up leaving? When he and Rima finally came out it was around 1:30am. When I approached him he said, "oh my, have you been waiting all this time?" Apparently he noticed us inside the restaurant. I told him I thought the play was really good and I asked for a photo. He replied, "After you've waited all this time, of course you can get a photo." So I stood close to him while my friend went to take the picture. Just then one of his friends came over and took the camera from her and told her to get in the picture as well. This is were I get jealous because Alan grabs her by the shoulders and pulls her infront of us. Oh, I almost lost it. (See my friend isn't really a fan of his she only is because I am and because she's such a great friend. She brings me to NYC so I can get these oportunities.) His buddy took two pictures of us which I had a feeling my eyes were closed in both. So when I got the camera back I asked Alan if I could get one alone with him. My friend took the first shot and I turned to him again and said that she better take on more incase it didn't come out. So we posed for another. Then we asked him if he would sign our playbills. Which he did with his own pen he happened to have in his hand. Then I handed him my gift. He said, "Oh how nice of you, Thankyou very much." Then he shakes both of our hands, he has very soft hands. Then He took off up the street.

I'm sorry we didn't get the chance to take your picture Sunday night. Alan was in such a hurry I can't believe he stopped and talked to me. Infact it was Rima that noticed I was trying to get his attention. Once he realized, he turned to me and smiled. Then I asked, do you remember me? I gave you the gift last night. He said, "Yes you were the ones that waited." Then I said some of the photos that were taken the night before my eyes were shut in and he asked, "so you want another photo?" I said if you don't mind. So we posed again. Then my friend asked did you get a chance to look at her drawings. And he said, "Yes they are very lovely thankyou for them." Then he and Rima took off up the street to hail a cab. We hailed a cab as well. We ended up going in the same direction and found out that they went to Bar Grill Cafe for the after party.

Yes, we ate at the Minetta Lane Tavern on Saturday, Oct 14th after seeing the preview for the second time. Prior to that, in a long story, we had sent gift bags backstage on Friday afternoon, containing among other things, a dozen homemade cookie bars. We also gave AR a coffeetable book on Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home, and I gave him a copy of my son's student films from NYU. All accompanied by numerous letters and some funny film-related postcards. We had gifts for Megan Dodds as well. Cookie bars for all of course. Well, after the show friday, we approached AR to ask for autographs and when he took my book from me, I managed to ask if he had received a gift bag ? You should have seen the huge smile I got!!!!!!  I almost died on the spot! I'm talking about a great big smile and the next thing I knew he was talking a mile a minute about "Lovely cakes"! Accompanied by all kinds of hand gestures and he even said " I wondered if they were poisioned, but saw your card and knew they were not!" More smiles followed. Then we took photos with him and it seems that Kathy took them and I don't know if they came out arrggghhh!!!!!!!

So this amazing reaction to the "lovely cakes" inspired us to see him again saturday. I happened to still have a dozen left over, so guess what" DUH!   I bagged them up and took them to the show . This time we saw him in the lobby, said hello, asked if he'd eaten all the cakes yet and YES!! again the amazing smile was aimed at us! I really can't tell you what I said, I was pretty much dumbfounded. I managed to say I had some more left over, would he like them? He got the cutest look on his face, like a kid caught in the cookie jar, he patted "Teh Pudge" and demonstrated how snug (ahem!) his jacket had gotten! He said something like," I'm trying to not gain weight" or something to that effect, but I was terrible and still offered and he took the bag anyway and told me "everyone" was enjoying the "cakes"!  Then we followed him out side and his party went down Minetta Lane to the Tavern and we went in after and found ourselves sitting ten feet away, and I was facing AR! Needless to say Kathy and I were careful not to stare (much!) Lots more happened after that which I will post later, I have to see if the busline has our luggage. We had such a terrible trip home! Needless to say, we were over the moon at his openness to us, very friendly and kept thanking us for coming to the playl   It's safe to say it was our pleasure! More later, must get luggage!

I find it curious but it's quite usual- (About MNiRC) The play became notorious in America before it was ever performed here when the New York Theatre Workshop cancelled a talked-about production last fall.

Despite it's being notorious, everyone who saw it, was greatly impressed!

My friend Kathy and I just got back home from our weekend seeing the preview of "My Name Is Rachel Corrie".  Our bus broke down on the way and we were on the side of the road in the dark for seven hours!  Needless to say I haven't been able to develop photos or anything like that. I did want to say that Kathy and I had three separate occasions to talk to Alan. He was more than kind each time. Once I get organized I'll tell you all more. Meanwhile, my suitcase with AR's autograph is still somewhere in Delaware and I am NOT happy about that! More as soon as I can manage.

A brief mention in the New York Times Arts Section today re: Pinter's "Old Times" revival starring AR.  The Roundabout Theater's artistic director cites "casting problems" as stopping plans for the revival.  Boo Hoo.

Well I just got back from NYC and I'm completely exhausted. The events of the last two nights have been amazing, my mind is still spinning. I attended the preview showing of MNiRC on Saturday and I was at the premiere last night after the show. I have to say that Megan Dodds had a brilliant performance on Saturday and I thought the play was very very good.

Not to mention I ate dinner near AR and was able to meet Miss. Horton. They are both very kind and were willing to take a minute to talk to me.

I have some photos of AR and I that I will share as soon as I can.

Abraham pacts with Dornford-May

Duo to create projects with South African talent

LONDON — Oscar-winning producer Eric Abraham has joined forces with South African-based director Mark Dornford-May to create theater and film projects with South African talent for an international audience.

Dornford-May, who won the Golden Bear at Berlin for "U-Carmen," has opened a Cape Town branch of Abraham's Porto-bello Pictures, and is rolling his existing projects into the joint venture.

South African theater producer Mannie Mannim will act as a consultant to the partnership.

Abraham and Dornford-May are already developing several stage co-productions with the Young Vic Theater in London.

Dornford-May will also direct Portobello's stage and movie adaptations of Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela's novel "A Human Being Died That Night."

Abraham is also developing a movie version of Ian Holding's novel "Unfeeling," set in Zimbabwe, with South African director Ian Gabriel and screenwriter Hofmeyr Scholtz.

Other talent in discussions for new projects with the joint venture include South African actress Janet Suzman, actor Alan Rickman, director Stephen Daldry, "U-Carmen" opera singer and actress Pauline Malefane, and composer Charles Hazlewood.

Abraham, who produced Jan Sverak's Oscar-winning "Kolya," was born in South Africa but was exiled to Britain 30 years ago, after being placed under house arrest by the apartheid government. At the time, he was working as a BBC correspondent.

"Over 30 years ago, as a Cape Town-born foreign correspondent, I helped give voices of the disenfranchised black majority an opportunity to be heard abroad. Now as a theater and film producer I want to do the same for some of its extraordinary creative talent," he commented.

"South African film and theater achievements in the international arena make a great antidote to the common perception abroad of South Africa and Africa in general."

God couldn't have given us better weather for the wedding, yall.  It was beautiful.  AND there is ALWAYS wind around the lakes so we were so concerned these last few weeks about how to keep the candles lit.  Let me tell yall.....there was only a gentle nice breeze all day and night long.  The candles did not have to be re-lit not once!

Interesting piece on MNiRC in Variety, with a lot of insight from the producers, Hammerstein and Pariseau.  Interesting:

Early sales indicators for "Corrie" seem to dispel any worries about the show's prospects: The production currently has the largest advance ever recorded at the Minetta Lane Theater.

Tonight (10/15) is the official opening night of MNiRC.  AR will undoubtely be present, so it would be unlikely that he would attend the autism event.

Hmmm....I think sometimes AR gives off vibes that some people find frightening.  Maybe due to some of the characters he has portrayed and his commanding voice.  But true AR aficionados know that underneath that awe inspiring facade, really lies a buttertart waiting to be loved *snort*...sorry, in a weird mood tonight.

And Jessika I am excited for you that you will be able to attend the São Paulo film festival and see "Snow Cake"! I have seen the movie and I can only recommend it! It is beautiful! And AR has got a lot of screen time! I read that it will premiere in German cinemas on November 02, so hopefully it will show in our Swiss cinemas, too! I will definitely go watch it AGAIN!

The film "My Name is Rachel Corrie," will open at Minetta Lane Theatre at 18 Minetta Lane, in New York. Taken from the words left behind in the diaries, letters and emails of American activist Rachel Corrie, "MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE" chronicles the human, social and political evolution in the life and controversial death of a young woman. The play traces the life of Rachel Corrie from her early days in Washington State, through her experiences as an activist seeking to learn more about the community within Gaza. Performed by Megan Dodds, "MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE" has been developed by Alan Rickman and Katharine Viner, in collaboration with Royal Court Theatre's International Department and produced with the kind permission of Rachel Corries's Family.

The run is through November 19, 2006. Showtimes are Tuesday - Saturday at 8 p.m; Sat & Sun at 3 p.m; Sun at 7p.m. Tickets are $45 - $65

I know he was spotted at a Rufus Wainright concert a couple years ago,,,,,i can just imagine him sitting there singing alone to such wonderful words as

Instant Pleasure ( great song) and Cigatettes and Chocolate Milk (great song). Actually, Rufus does a wonderful duet with John Lennons son Sean called This Boy ( you sure can tell its John's son). Well, the general consensus seems to be that the red shirt says H2SO4. That is the chemical symbol for sulphuric acid which is also known as "oil of vitriol." Personally, I think that is just perfect for our man. However, I think it far more likely that it is just a t-shirt for the London band H2SO4, which came into being in the late 90's. If you want info go to www.allmusic.com and search for H2SO4 or look for their albums, "Machine-Turned Blues" or "Glamtronic."
