If the link above works, the talkback schedule is on there. I am guessing that all or most that are listed for the first talkback will be present for the remaining dates. According to the lady i spoke with at Ticketmaster AR is likely to be there on all of the talkback nights.
Comments: Thanks Dorothea for your account, it was very kind of both Susan and you to share that experience with us. Hey guys, I think I've found a new picture from AR as 'Richis'! Well not exactly as 'Richis' but as himself wearing 'Richis' wardrobe. ![]() Click here, hope it'll be really 'new', I've never seen it before. Happy Birthday, Snapefan! ![]()

What is your location? Germany Comments: Thank you for your kind feedback, everyone. Oh, SnapeFan, there will be a Q&A session for MNiRC in New York at the 24th? I did not find this information on the Internet. Who will be present?
What is your location? Germany Comments: Thank you so much for the additions to your report, Dorothea. It's fantastic to know what AR actually spoke about at the Q&A.
Comments: Thanks Carolyn and New Jan for the birthday wishes. Yes my tickets are for the Oct 24th Q&A session. After all the responses from the UK run of MNiRC I really wanted to see the play.I will not lie I am excited that I may get to see AR after the play. I am even more excited to see work that he has taken part in. After all this play is based on the writings and emails of what seems a very talented young lady. For AR to put a play together from those materials just goes to show you that he is more than just an actor. Just like what he had done for The Winter Guest. I am glad to have the chance to see this and if anyone else is planning on going that night let me know and maybe we can meet up before the show.
Comments: Wow, Dorothea! Thank you so very much for sharing your experience with us! I'm with INTJ--an absolute pleasure to read! I could picture a lot of what you described, which is probably why I'm sitting here with a great big goofy grin on my face! LOL
So much food for thought--thank you for coming back to post what you remembered. It sounds like, for all the wear and tear of his hectic schedule (and all the hoohah surrounding that
Thanks for giving more detail on the "worrysome" comment. It sounds to me as if he is merely coming up against some of the ageism of the film industry and refuses to compromise whatever factors/values influence his choice of scripts. Good on him! It might cause more good writers to sit up and take notice of the maturing talent they are all too often letting go to waste.
Congrats on seeing AR in person! And thanks again!
What is your location? UK Comments: Happy Birthday, Snapefan.
I saw MniRC on its last afternoon here in London. I have to admit, the reason I went to see it was because of my interest in AR's work, but that wasn't the reason I stood up at the end to applaud. I have never seen anything so moving on stage in my life (and I'd seen Iain Glenn in The Crucible a few weeks earlier). The stillness of the audience during Rachel's last email home was was something I'd never experienced before at the theatre. The emotion was tangible. It's just brilliant. And I just wanted to say to Snapefan, enjoy! I would love the opportunity to see it again.
Btw - does anyone know if AR was present at the last performance of MniRC on 21st May 2006? Is it tradition for the director to be present at the last performance (for the after-show party, perhaps)? I ask because I saw someone who could have been him applauding at the end but I couldn't see clearly enough.

What is your location? Germany Comments: For those of you who might appreciate it, something more on the Q&A event at BAFTA. I am really grateful to everyone sharing their experiences here with others, and simply want to give something back here. The Q&A was the first time Alan met Rose, the autistic woman (who did not seem very autistic – she is "high functioning"). He had made sure he didn´t meet her before. He jumped up when she surprisingly turned up (they had doubted it), and, walking around her, gave her his chair. He also mentioned something like his heart skipping because of finally meeting her. Later he explained that he had not been sure whether to shake her hand. AR said some highly interesting things during the Q&A; everything the others said was only known to me, so I won´t repeat it. AR said that at this point in his career he does things only if he can learn something from them. He also mentioned that the script of this film had been the most ready for filming he had ever got. When a woman said he had a very dry wit and asked him why his roles always were so extremely funny, whether it was not mostly timing, and whether he wrote those extremely funny one liners himself sometimes, he answered that he got the texts, and then he decided whether to do it as it was written, or not. So it seems that in a roundabout way he admitted that he writes some of the text himself at times. The producer said that his role had not been that well developed without him. (By the way, the author wrote that part for him, and they would not have done the film if he had not done it. – And they wouldn´t have gotten the money then, either.) AR himself made them aware of the stages Alex had to go through to change the way he did. For example, Alan had the idea to let him help with arranging the funeral, which was perfectly logical once he had mentioned it, but no one had thought of. So obviously he influences the scripts somewhat at times. They also mentioned that Alan had invented the for me most funny scene in the film, where he has the bucket with water and ... – you´ll see it. AR said that Alex had to have his little revenge. Someone asked him how he had come to ask Sigourney Weaver. And he said (paraphrased): „At a certain point in one´s life, one realizes that the most important in the work is intuition. – And my intuition was to ask Sigourney to take that part.“ Someone asked something about autism, and AR said that as an actor, he did well in being very aware of the danger of sensory overload. Then AR said that there was a scale of autism, and that (with his arranging pencils in a line at home) he knew now where on that scale he was. And he said that everyone should be aware where they are on that scale. He said that after the film he knew and accepted his inner autistic part. When talking about SW plaing this part, he said (and mentioned it later again) that she had completely given up her ego, and underlined this by a gesture of throwing something back over your shoulder. As he accompanied what he said by gestures at times. And of course his facial expression was very lively, as we know it, with pouting, smiling, looking serious, tilting his head and so on. He mentioned how SW had gone into that role and then at times they had to see what would happen. For example, there was a scene when Linda ran onto the street. He had asked SW whether he should let her do that, and how she would react if he tried to hold her back. SW had said that they would see that (when traing), and that way they had „ended up with her slapping me“. AR seemed to find that very funny. AR talked relatively long a few times – three or four very long, perfect sentences, but always strictly to the point, and very interesting. A few times he started a sentence two or three times, changing it after two words without any embarrassment until he finally came up with a perfect sentence. He seemed like an extremely intelligent, extremely fast thinking person. How fast AR´s facial expression changes we already know. I was very surprised at how often he smiled during the event. He was perfectly relaxed on the stage. At the beginning, he tilted his enormous chair, almost overturned it – learning fast, he did not tilt it again that evening.

What is your location? Germany Comments: Hello, everyone. I have read this guest book for a while and that way got the information about the BAFTA event in London. Thank you very much for that!! I was there and just came back home yesterday. Every person has their own perceptions. I can share some of mine here, which are of course influenced by the fact that it was the first time I ever saw Alan Rickman in person. We did not know whether AR would be present for the drinks at all, so I was very positively surprised when suddenly he was standing there on the other end of the room shortly before that ended. I went very close and then stood about one yard from him. He was looking very good, certainly younger than on the photographs of the last years, and talked to people in turns. He gave his full concentration to everyone who talked to him and his charming professional smile to some of them. I do not know what Rima looks like, sadly, so can´t say I have seen her there at all. Pity. I also did not see Sean Biggerstaff at all, which is a pity, too, as I really love that young actor. At the Q&A AR said some things I found very interesting. He said that there is a scale of autism, and that after having done this film he knows where he is on that scale. He also said that at his stage of career, he does only films from which he learns something. Maybe he also said then that every film might be his last, implying that most scripts were not that good. He obviously loved the script of "Snow Cake" enormously. He also mentioned that he suggested Sigourney Weaver for the role, as who knows her knows that she is a real "mensh" (human being). He admired extremely how she played her role. He was also struck by Rose being so similar to her that it felt to him as if he was sitting next to Sigourney. He spoke beautifully, sometimes fishing around for the beginning of his sentence, but you could have printed every sentence he said. AR was extremely patient with the fans. He went back into the room at one point to give some more autographs instead of leaving. Some of the female fans were hanging around, not daring to ask for autographs. He gave the last autographs on the street, when the last ones had finally worked up their courage. At one point he named many people and then remembered that he had left out Marc Evans, the director. He rolled his eyes, playing to be embarrassed about having left him out. To me he seemed in good cheer. He smiled very often and laughed a few times. And I think he would not have been as incredibly patient with fans otherwise. I was extremely happy to have seen Alan Rickman and about his attitude towards fans and being in the spotlight. He was perfectly natural. Those are some of my subjective impressions.

What must poor Susan be thinking?
To be honest I feel totally overwhelmed at the response to my report. It appears I opened a whole can of worms! My first thoughts were that maybe I should not have been so honest in my report and kept certain observations to myself. Something to ponder on with future reports. But I wanted you all to feel you were there with me, experiencing everything I was seeing. I'm sure Alan will go on to make several more films despite his insecurities about his future. I'm sure we all wish him good heath, happiness and the intelligence to realize when it's time to take a much needed holiday. God bless you.

It's the next best thing to actually being there! I appreciate any fan who takes the time to write out a detailed encounter and share it with the group. We really appreciate your efforts! I hope that you and your son enjoyed your birthdays. (Hey...what happened to all the birthday smileys??)
Comments: What must poor Susan be thinking, she gave us a lovely detailed report, that we all wanted I might add. She gave us an insight to the real man and stirred up a hornets nest. Leave the man alone. We don't know him, or his moods or his likes and dislikes, we speculate and discuss and it can be fun up to a point, when we go beyond that point it can get hurtful. I'm thinking of Susan here. I have never met Alan though I would love to and I love to read peoples experiences when they do meet him, but we could be putting people off if when they do tell us about meetings we carry on like this. Incidentally I am slightly older than Alan, I can forget my grand children's names and go through the lot including the dog before I get to the one who is standing in front of me and no way do I consider myself senile, I am far to busy.
Comments: (Hello???? all you well-meaning fans, It's not your responsibility! Don't take on others' problems, including AR's. What fans say is their responsibility. What happens with AR's career is his responsibility. Let's not get so confused that we feel we are responsible for AR's feelings, other posters' attitudes, etc.
Comments: I'm not sure where anyone hit the realm of obsession. Discussion about what went on tended toward analysis of what we read in a report from someone else. There were some seriously worried about some things and I thought some were simply responding to that worry by explaining the likely simple things that COULD have caused what we read in the report. Then the whole conversation really, for the most part, stopped, and the discussion was about limits and what is okay and what isn't.
Very VERY little has been said about the original report and the private stuff once there was protest. I think maybe one post came afterwards and I attributed that to someone reading the report and not seeing all the back and forth about privacy.
Miriam
Comments: ARdent, I agree that only Claudia can have the final say about what is and isn't allowed on her board, but I know her to be a fair-minded person who allows people to share their opinions, even if they are dissenting ones, as mine is.
Quote: . . . speculation on this world-wide public forum about What's Wrong With AR is probably not the most respectful way to show our appreciation of him.
I agree, Ellen.
Clearly there's a difference of opinion as to where the line should be drawn--where AR's privacy begins and ends. I don't think this is a bad discussion, but a positive one, and I'm sorry if people feel threatened by it. Personally, I believe in balance. There is AR the artist, AR the celebrity persona, and AR the man, as Vera has said. Obsessive analysis of his work or this persona--down to niggling over tiny details--isn't over the top, IMO. It's what fans do. Joking about his clothes (or his bananas) ala the fantastically funny RedTango, and even making reference to our fantasies/fascination with that celebrity persona (the only AR we know) is also what fans do.
The issue that some of us are taking--and I think this is a valid issue and a valid opinion--is that to take that obsessive analysis into someone's private life, where we don't have facts to back up the theories we publish in the open, is to disrespect them. And look at how the theories are spreading; I have seen the speculation tear through the fandom like a wildfire, with people jumping to all sorts of conclusions. It's one thing if you're the kind of celebrity who welcomes this and considers ANY publicity good publicity (oddly, some do), but we all know how AR is about his private life, and to respect him is to respect that. As we would respect the requests of other people in our lives for whom we feel great admiration.
I'm not saying we should put him on a pedestal--not at all!--but we shouldn't treat AR any differently than we'd treat our co-workers, friends, or family members, or than we would want to be treated ourselves, because he IS a real person, just trying to be and do his best. I know that I wouldn't want my private life, romantic relationships, health issues, etc. to be the subject of anyone's casual speculation, and so I try to respect that with regard to AR, the man. I'm not judging anyone here, just expressing a deeply held opinion, formed over many years in this particular fandom.

Comments: Today five or six of us have suggested, as politely as we could, that speculation on this world-wide public forum about What's Wrong With AR is probably not the most respectful way to show our appreciation of him. His health, his frame of mind, his most intimate relationship, alleged negative sides of his personality--now hints of senility, perhaps? A universal aspect of being middle-aged is occasional short-term memory flickerings. Is there any way we can persuade the rest of you to take this thread to private e-mail before it gets picked up by a reporter and spread through the tabloids?

I just had a " BRAIN FART" which we all have sometimes. So Alan, our advice to you is ( like he would read this but hey,,,,,,,,lets pretend, ok), ahemm,,,,,,,,our advice to you is. Sit back, relax, put your feet up, have a beer ( or an ale ), watch some tennis ( ok, i know there is no tennis right now but hey, were pretending here), grab a few butter - tarts and enjoy yourself, give Rima an ole pickle tickle and get a good nights sleep because " tomorrow is a brand new day".
Comments: I forgot my own phone number yesterday and when I was at the pharmacy getting a prescription filled I started telling them the number I had from almost 2 years ago.
This was because I had a ridiculously CRAZY day. It wasn't even a BAD day, just busy and goofy. My daughter stayed home because she didn't feel well. My son stayed home because he accidentally swallowed something he shouldn't have but didn't know what it was because he chews everything in sight because he has autism and even though he's 9 he chews stuff. My phone started falling apart and bits of it were falling off. Alex ended up having to have an xray. Then we went to get the glasses fixed and they were closed for lunch. I went and got us some food and got grease all down my front. The glasses couldn't be repaired because it needed a part and the glasses were discontinuted so we needed new frames. The frames were only 38 or I could use the warranty and they would be 25 for shipping the old frames back to the makers. But I was freaking over money because the eye doc's officed called last week and said I owed $400 because my insurance wouldn't pay something. So I was fretting over the $13 difference between warranty and giving back the glasses or no warranty and keeping the old ones, having them glued back together and using them for emergency purposes. I spoke to the staff at the eye doc and said, "I can pay $200 today but not the full $400 which the billing person had given me quite a bit of grief about last week. They looked on the computer and couldn't find a balance for me. They fretted and ran around looking and finally figured out that I'd already paid it back in JULY. Which was a relief and I wasn't angry at the time because I was too busy laughing about my ridiculously nutty day. I paid the $38. Oh, and I haven't slept well all week and had a hot flash the night before all this that I didn't really know was a hot flash because I woke up freezing from having a wet shirt from sweating so much. I slept through the hot part. This means I'm heading into menopause which I knew was going to happen soon but still....
sorry for the long paragraph but reading that way might illustrate WHY I couldn't remember my phone number even though I've had the same one for nearly three years. Sometimes just being too busy messes up short term memory.
Miriam

Comments: Just to add my two cents while waiting another of my downslooooowdings to finish... I think we'll agree that when somebody goes to an AR related public event we count the minutes for the report to come. Reports, piccies, videos, you name it... everything is welcome and highly appreciated! How we interpret the information received is an individual process, as unique as we are each one of us. POV's are just that, we're not making laws here. As Claudia said in the introduction message: "We don’t have a lot of rules, but we do expect everyone to respect each other and to respect Alan Rickman." IMO, today's discussion did not break this golden rule. Everyone exchanged their opinions with politeness, no harm has been done and as fas as I know no squirrel has been damaged. ...and probably the OooA and You-know-Who are sleeping together right now having sweet dreams. What is your location? Massachusetts Comments: After reading the article about Alan down below, maybe he just had an off night. Who knows? Also, as Susan stated, she had the wine without food and it was going to her head, so perhaps she was a little fuzzy? I know if I even have one little drink-WOW-it gets to me right away and I become disoriented. (LOL). I guess what I am trying to say, is everyone has their off days and if we are fans of Alan's just move on and rejoice in his films, plays etc. and leave his personal life to him. (will get off my soapbox now) I also in no form want to hurt anyones feelings either and thought Susans report fascinating-I just took it with a grain of salt as the old expression goes. Have a good one all-off to bed soon-what a busy day-

Comments: by the way, I'm not the least bit angry here, just fascinated with the discussion of what's okay to say here and what isn't.
Miriam
Comments: Perhaps it is also an invasion of privacy to go to these public events and report on every tiny nuance of what Alan does. Reporting on here what Rima did when Alan tried to kiss her is almost certainly an invasion if discussion of it is an invasion.
Sorry Susan, I'm not trying to give you grief about anything, just trying to make a logical point.
Reporting that Alan won't sign Snape pix because "That's not me" might be an invasion too. He wasn't necessarily intending for these appearances to be reported worldwide any more than he was intending for us to talk about it. He probably also doesn't intend for us to talk about his sex life or underwear or who his significant other is. So we need to restrict all conversation to movies and characters and include nothing that Alan may or may NOT have said. Taking such things out of context may be harmful as well.
How often have we speculated on how Alan feels about the press? Or who he hugs? Or where is Rima?
I'm not saying I was right in anything I said. Only that if I'm wrong then there's a lot of other stuff wrong too.
Respectfully,
Miriam
"There's no doubt about this, and most certainly no one can stop us from indulging in our fantasies - in private. But I doubt that it is a good idea to post all of our fantasies on a public board like this without reflecting about them first. Everyone draws different lines when it comes to being comfortable with certain fantasies, but sometimes listening to our common sense helps us realise that we might go too far once in a while."
Comments: Quote: I've never been part of the "Must Protect AR Camp," . . . But this is too much The only one who can decide what is "too much" in this forum is Claudia (or Sabine GA in her stead) and nothing disrespectful has been written. How can we possibly hope to avoid crossing everyone else's lines? It seems to me you can't have any kind of discussion that way. Everyone would just sit around and smile at each other for fear of offending. Nice . . . but boring.
Comments: I missed this message from before. I apologize if anything I did was unethical or wrong in any way. My perception here is that we are not the center of the universe so our opinions play little role in the lives of celebrities. I don't claim to "love" Alan Rickman. I mean I LOVE my perception of Alan Rickman. If I assumed that my life in any way impacted Alan Rickman's I'd worry about my sanity. It would be like assuming, "Alan Rickman wants me to camp on his lawn."
I maintain that being interested in the man's emotional state is no different than being interested in his boxer shorts. Either they're both an invasion or they are not.
I'd email privately about this but I don't have the email addresses to do it.
"Speculating in public about the private concerns of a man you claim to "love" is not only harmful (to this man and his partner), it's irresponsible, selfish and childish. If the same speculations that you are posting here appeared in a tabloid newspaper, you'd be screaming bloody murder about "invasion of privacy" and "lies".
Take it to email or a private room if you want to gossip about things you have no way of verifying, but let's end it here."

And that's okay because we're not writing this in a newspaper, we're just casually talking about stuff.
No, indeed, instead we post about it in the internet - worldwide.
Fantasies are never wrong because they don't involve real life and NOTHING I say in here about Alan Rickman should ever be taken as REAL LIFE.
I think that we sometimes forget that Alan Rickman happens to be a real person.
There are LOTS of people who write fanfics about Alan Rickman rather than about characters he plays and it's fun and interesting to think about the possibilities.
This happens to be one of the lines I mentioned above, which I personally don't cross. I think real life fanfiction is absolutely disrespectful.
Comments: Sorry, something I wanted to add here. We all are here to indulge in fantasies. Some of what mine are about is emotion and psychology. It's in all the fanfics. Analyzing what I read in peoples reports and in articles and what I see in interviews is part of that. And we ALL do it, it's just that some of us talk about boxer shorts and sex. Everyone here waits to read reports from people when they go and each little tidbit adds something to each person's thoughts and fantasies about a person we can't ever know. And that's okay because we're not writing this in a newspaper, we're just casually talking about stuff. So is indulging My fantasy wrong? Fantasies are never wrong because they don't involve real life and NOTHING I say in here about Alan Rickman should ever be taken as REAL LIFE. It's only theories and stray thoughts. As for the "protect Alan" thing, that's a BIG part of some folks' fantasies. It doesn't mean they think he can't take care of himself. It means they like the fantasy of being needed. How is that different from enjoying a fantasy of bedding the man?

Comments: So far I don't think anything is out of proportion. Everyone agrees we're clueless and it was probably an off night. I can't help that I'm fascinated by human psychology. It's my nature to analyze human interactions and I think I'm much too down to earth to put much stock in any of this. I'd like to think we're all sensible enough to know that our perceptions are likely to be totally wrong and that we're only looking at a snapshot which tells us nothing. But for me, anyway, it's almost like trying to figure out how a magician does a trick. Just because I can't necessarily know the truth doesn't mean I don't enjoy thinking about it.
So if you'd rather not discuss such things at all I can always take it else where. But so far I've really enjoyed it here.

What is your location? Arkansas Comments: Susan, Thanks for the report. I wouldn't take an off night too seriously. AR is a little of a misery guts at times, and I'm sure being tired doesn't help. I'm a **tch when I'm tired. My husband and I loved each other very much but I KNOW we had squabbles and there were times I'd have liked to knock his block off. AR strikes me at times as taking life a little too seriously. And....it is normal to once and awhile think about the years passing by! I've said good-bye to lots of things I'd thought I'd do or be. But there are other plusses that age brings--he knows it --he's just had a bad day, Rima might have had a bad day, too. Just means our matinee idol is human--thank goodness.
What is your location? Taking a step back . . . Comments: I wholeheartedly agree with Ellen, Vera, Disgusted, and all those who posted earlier in an attempt to put the brakes on this runaway train. Concern is one thing, but outlandish speculation in public is an altogether different one. And that's precisely what some of this is. I've never been part of the "Must Protect AR Camp," because I fervently believe that fandom is for the fans (read: for us to relax, joke, have fun, make friends, etc.), and that curiosity about him is natural. To a point. But this is too much--whatever is "wrong" with AR is his own business unless he chooses to make it otherwise, and whatever did or did not go on between AR and his partner is between THEM. I seriously doubt that other people's noses and theories--well-intentioned or not--are welcome. I'd bet that goes for their own circle, but certainly for his fans.
No wonder the man is timid of doing interviews and public appearances.
Comments: That was very well said, Vera.
Speculating in public about the private concerns of a man you claim to "love" is not only harmful (to this man and his partner), it's irresponsible, selfish and childish. If the same speculations that you are posting here appeared in a tabloid newspaper, you'd be screaming bloody murder about "invasion of privacy" and "lies".
Take it to email or a private room if you want to gossip about things you have no way of verifying, but let's end it here.
What is your location? Germany Comments: It doesn't harm anything for us to be concerned and try to figure it out.
The problem is that no one of us will have the opportunity to figure out anything at all. And the more people discuss it, the more it seems to get out of proportion. As a few other posters already pointed out, it's all guesswork, and while it's well meant to be concerned about his health and sanity, we don't have the slightest reason to think that something might not be okay with him, and in either case we can't do anything about it. I think that to a certain extent discussions as the one going today do cause harm, because this is exactly how rumours about his health and the state of his relationship, which both aren't our concern, come into being.
Comments: It doesn't harm anything for us to be concerned and try to figure it out. We do it out of genuine concern. I think you're right. Sounds like he must have had an off night. I mean that was mostly the point of my ridiculously long post. LOL.

Comments:
I just looked up 'the voice of reason' in the dictionary, and low and behold, Ellen's photo was there.
Comments: Good grief! Such a fuss. Please keep in mind that there is no proof that AR is unhappy, ill, or anything else dire. There is a report that he seemed to have an off-night--as he has done from time to time in the past, just as everyone does.
Comments: I will include Alan and Rima in my night prayer. I had heartaches as I read Susans report. It makes me sad when a person that I love is unhappy.
Comments: ARdent,
I just wanted to thank you for the sweet way you said this
"All we can do is wish him the best (and say a prayer if we're so inclined) and make sure we thoroughly enjoy his work."
I mean about saying a prayer if we're so inclined.
Maybe this will sound silly, but since I'm not inclined to that I felt like you were taking people like me into account and thinking of my feelings. I've been treated rather badly by some folks, some who were supposed to be my friends, because I didn't do as they did. They stopped inviting my kids to their kids' birthday parties and such. Anyway, so when someone takes that extra little step to acknowledge the fact that not everyone is the same it makes me feel good.
I love this place.

What is your location? France What is the URL of your HomePage? (include "http://") http://www.rickmanparadise.com Comments: Yes, it's probably coz he's overbooked. Nevertheless, it's weird But I don't think that he has less movie projects because of his age, it would be horrible ! ![]() Maybe that the photo with the Italian girl was outside, no ?
Comments: Just read Susan's report. Wow, poor Alan. He is exhausted and also probably was VERY upset about whatever happened with Rima and distracted by it. Nobody likes to be angry with a loved one. Whatever it was it messed with his self esteem a LOT and I bet that prompted the thing about not working much longer. He needs a BREAK! I wish I could have been there. I know it couldn't have been easy and may have been a bit disappointing, but generally when I'm in a room and someone is obviously NOT behaving as they normally would I can figure out quite a bit about it just by standing back and observing.
Maybe he's sick. I saw one photo recently where I didn't think he looked well at all. Then in others he looks fine. Working too much won't help any health issues he has, though. It's so heartbreaking.
I think Alan has really been struggling with getting older. I mean it seems like he brings that up a lot about being older. Like at Berlinale when he asked the actress who plays Vivienne to contribute something from the "other end of the age spectrum". OUCH. He also said something recently about looking in the mirror and thinking, "there's another role I wanted to play that I'm too old for now" or something like that. Like he's just watching roles slip out of his reach.
It all totally makes sense when it comes to the pic signing thing too. Maybe he doesn't even want to see younger pictures of himself. KWIM? Wow, SO sad. And to feel so unhappy and then to have a supportive person angry with him. I mean it sounds like he was TRYING to be nice and fix things and it wasn't well received by Rima.
I hope he's not having some medical issues that are causing his brain freeze symptoms. To me, though, it sounds like he was upset and just barely holding it together. That happens to everyone at every age, I expect.

What is your location? Spain Comments: Hi Chris
Yes, I was extra in the movie, and It´s was fantastic! I took part in the last scenes, whit Alan and Ben
Comments: Just being a bit realistic, Chris. But, you're right . . . it's all guesswork and we can't actually know for sure what he meant. And this is Fantasy Land . . . in a GOOD way!
Comments: Welcome, Jan! Ann, were you an extra in Perfume? It must have been exciting. Other Jan , you know, I remember an interview in which Richard Harris said the same thing you quoted. But RH was 72 and looking weak. AR looks just fine for now so let's all stop retiring the man or burrying him already. A bad day is a bad day and he'll sort out his personal problems one way or the other. IF there are any. Now please excuse me, I'm gonna go stare at that picture of him (Hikity's right, I thought there were no photos allowed. Hmm. Not that I'm complaining or anything ) for the next 17 minutes. Have a lovely evening all!
Comments: Alfan, I believe you may very well be 100% right, but (*blush*) this is just a very gentle nudge to point out out the obvious---that you do mean 2004, 2005, 2006, and so forth. Please forgive me for pointing that out. I know you are a big fan of ARs! Cheers, and thanks for sharing.
Comments: Thank you, Susan, for your detailed report. It sounds very objective to me . . . just a play-by-play description. You said: Quote: He also said that he didn't think he would be able to work much longer and fears every film will be his last. It seems that he would have the HP films "in the bag" if he's willing and able to do them . . . so why might every film be his last? His busy schedule could be from trying to get in as much as he can while he can. These things happen. But who knows? All we can do is wish him the best (and say a prayer if we're so inclined) and make sure we thoroughly enjoy his work.
As to memory . . . it took 2 minutes for me to come up with the word "objective" even though I knew what I wanted to say and have known the word for many years. So I can relate to that. His could be a physical problem or merely distraction at the moment.
What is your location? New York Comments: Another thought about his being tired: IIRC, MNIRC begins previews on Oct.5...that's only seven days from today! He's going to have to be on a plane very very soon to come to NY and begin the incredible ordeal of not only directing, but suffering through endless rounds of inane questions & comments, as well as enduring a particular type of publicity this play will generate in NY. Talk about making a deal with the devil!

Comments: You would think after all the years Rima and Alan have been together she would would be used to his celtic black dog moods. He said in one interview she understood his moods and knew how to deal with them. After all no-one knows him better than she does. Maybe it was some thing more than just a mood swing.
What is your location? UK Comments: Hi, I'm new to this page. I found it while looking for new news about Old Times (that sounds weird, doesn't it - new news/old times).
Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to Susan for that account, but reading it has made me a bit sad. I know we all have our off days, but to read it in connection with someone you admire, who's an actor and should have been able to bluff his way through an off mood for this occasion, not to mention the comments like 'every film being his last' etc. I have to admit, it's sent me on a bit of a downer.
Plus, I know through experience that if you and yours have a tiff before a big event, you grit your teeth and pretend to be a happy couple until you get back home and then let him have it, lock, stock and smoking barrel.
I need cheering up. Someone tell me that Old Times is going ahead - only it's on in London instead of NY
What is your location? Canada Comments: You know, Alan must be one tired puppy. I mean just look back at what he has done over the past year or so. I believe it started with the ending of GOF end of 94 beginning of 95, and next was the voice over of Marvin ,then went on and the work and prep to bring MNIRC to London in March of 95 and all the work there that he did, then he went on to do Snow Cake in Canada in the fall of 95,then did Purfume in the summer of 95, then went and did Noble Son in fall of 95. Then i believe he went and did the second running of MNIRC in Oct of 95. Then in if you think of all the flying to Film Festivals during the spring and summer, now the fall along with the prep ( and stress) of bringing MNIRC to NY plus all the other Film Festivals that has premiered at. He has been to Germany, USA, to London, back to USA then on to Germany back to USA and then London. Now, i know i missed a few things a few apperances for charities and showings but i cant remember. Except the little holiday ( with Rima ) he had in Canada after shooting Snow Cake i dont think he really has had any time to himself.
After all the stress rather it be good or bad can take a toll on a person. I for one give him kodoos for doing all that he is doing, and i can tell you one thing. If that were me who did all that stuff i would be one cranky person. We must remember that he is 60. Although he might seem cranky i think he is sticking to his principals. When he is promoting SC, Perfume, NS and MNIRC then who wants to be drilled on HP. I think he is well aware that the role of Snape has brought him more notoriety than if he didnt do it and the it must come with the territory but that doesnt mean he has to breath and live Snape. I agree with him, he is more than that.
Comments: Susan, thank you for you detailed report. Have a lovely birthday!

Comments: Susan, thank you so much for sharing your adventure with us! Hikity, maybe the italian girl entered the building through a window, perhaps? ![]()
Comments: I would think an actor would get quite tired of promoting a project that they did months/years before. They have already mentally moved on to the next project -- but business demands that they keep dredging up the past. It must get rather dull for him to keep dressing up and saying the same things. But, if people paid almost $100 for a ticket and a chance to mingle with him...that must have been disppointing. Susan - thanks for the detailed report.

A huge and belated welcome to Ann, Karin, Kisch, Hayati, Alexi, Marta, and Sa!! I'm so glad you all decided to join our little group. Gosh, the international flavor we have here is amazing!
I'm wishing Susan and her son a wonderful birthday as well! I hope you two have a great day!
Thank you sooo much for taking time to write such an informative report, Susan! I really enjoyed reading it. I hope if any other little tid-bits come to mind you will share them too!
I don't think we have to worry about AR's well being to much. I know we all tend to worry when we hear things not being quite right with him at appearences but we have to remember he has a huge pile on his plate right now. I don't see how it does it all. I've been working long hours lately and can barely remember anything these days. I'm sure he's OK.
As for a spat with Rima. Well, is there a couple on this planet that doesn't have a spat from time to time? Its a sign of "normalism" for them in my mind.
AFNH, I hope you are feeling better!
Alfan, I have to agree with you on AR's golf swing in TSfJG! I'm not a golfer but I used to work for three of the biggest golfers in my area and they were constantly doing the "air swing" in the office so I can pretty well detect a decent swing! LOL
Chris, as for him shooting pool...I think you're right there too! Pool/Billiards are a delightful pass time for me so I was delighted when he shot some pool in StLM. Again, I'm not a pro but I think I'm pretty good at it.....especially with a nice cold beer at my side! LOL
Marlina you're right, Gissing has never been released. *rolls eyes*. But the golf swing was in some of the video clips that were "officially" released on the Gissing site. I haven't checked there lately so I don't know if they are still there....or even if Binder has a Gissing section on the site any longer. Nevertheless, whether the film was released or not, there have been many of us that have seen the film in its entirety. I hope you will get the chance to see it one day. I have some problems with the film but AR's and Juliet Stevenson's and Janeane Garofalo's parts were hilarious! Their comic timing is impeccable.
RickiNicki, I've seen your ims from time to time but you've always signed off by the time I see them. I hope to be able to catch you online soon. I am sooo glad you got to see Perfume! You and I were quite the cheerleaders for Tywker in those early days of Perfume!
SnoKat, nope...you're not a wack job! I do that too sometimes. Especially on his birthday.

What is your location? New York Comments: Susan, thanks so very much for your report...and a second Happy Birthday greeting!
It's quite possible that although Alan & Rima have never been a demonstrative couple, they did have a falling out that precipitated their actions last night. They are only human. I don't think the producer would have made that comment if everything were "status quo", so to speak. LOL...I know what it's like to have to go somewhere after having a row....not the most pleasant adventure, to say the least!
Since you've seen him before, Susan, it's possible that something was "off" that night. I'm sure he's quite taken up with MNIRC right now, and to a certain degree, right now, "Snow Cake" is on the back burner.
My own take on the comment about not acting anymore is that possibly he feels that there aren't really good scripts being offered to him.
Regarding the camera & cellphone, LOL...now I know I have to go into one of those spy shops and purchase a camera that looks like anything but a camera!

He looks OK, and you are probably right about him needing a holiday. I think personally that he is beginning to look and feel his age and fears that there isn't much work there now for an "old man" his words, not mine.

Comments: Susan~ Please.. Is he fine?
Comments: I'm sorry, but I have to say this.....
Before we start assuming that he is mentally and physically exhausted, fighting with Rima, and has given up washing his hair, I suggest we consider that this is just one person's interpretation of an encounter.
Everybody interprets things differently.

Thanks very much for your fascinating account of last night ! Sounds like trouble on the domestic front ! Actually in all seriousness, Alan sounds as if he is completely mentally and physically exhausted . The man needs a holiday ! I really don't think he is at all comfortable with being a "celebrity " and would rather not have to sign autographs etc. Interesting to see again that no photos were allowed ( just like Chelsea ) . I'm glad I didn't pay Ł50 for that. I am very happy to have seen " Snow Cake " and thoroughly enjoyed Alan's performance in it. You were very lucky, Hikity, Peek and Dee to be able to get photos ! Hope you enjoyed yourself anyway, Susan ! Its always great fun having a trip to London.

What is your location? On second cup of coffee! ZZZZZzzzzz Comments: OK are you all sitting comfortably?......then I will begin!
Arrived in London around 4.30pm and walked through the masses of camera clicking tourists across Trafalgar Square, up Haymarket to Piccadilly Circus. Wanted to find the location before getting a coffee nearby. I walked right passed it and had to ask where it was. It was not as I imagined it to be. It was a very small discreet doorway in part of a much larger building with the words BAFTA above it. Time check 5.15pm......time for a coffee across the road. Returned at 5.45pm, a small number of people were now gathering clutching Snow Cake tickets. We had to wait outside as they would not let anyone in until 6pm. Thought Alan might arrive in a car before then, but no. Entered the small hallway at 6pm and got my name checked on a list, showed ticket and got to keep it. Then they checked my bag and took away my camera AND my phone (with camera) and said I could collect them after the evening had finished. I began to feel a little cloud of gloom gathering as I was beginning to imagine what kind of event this was going to be. I walked up the stairway with marble walls, plush red carpet and gold handrails. The gold BAFTA face mask dominated the wall. Two floors up it opened into a reception area where I was greeted by a nice girl who showed me the cloakroom and walked with me across an area where many people were chatting and drinking to another raised area also with quite a few people. She got me a drink of red wine and wished me a pleasant evening. I scanned around and in front of me was Snow Cakes producer (Gina Carter) talking with some elderly men. She kept looking towards the doorway and checking her watch. I thought it would be a good bet to stay close to her as Alan, when he arrived, would meet up with her. Time check 6.30pm and still no sign of Alan. The red wine was very strong, and as I had not eaten anything, went straight to my head. The small canapes on offer did little to relieve my warm fuzzy feeling and swaying room! Suddenly out of nowhere Rima arrived with a black woman and kissed and hugged the producer. I scanned frantically for Alan, but there was no sign of him. By now the room was packed tight and I was almost pressed up against Rima who shot me two or three curious looks. Time check 6.45pm. WHERE WAS HE????? I looked away for a couple of minutes and when I glanced back....there he was as if by magic! He kissed the black woman on the cheek and the producer, and then hesitated and looked at Rima. She ignored him and he reluctantly lent over to kiss her too. She immediately turned her face away from him and the quick peck ended up around her ear, after which Alan gave her one of his famous Snape glares. He ignored her all evening and didn't speak to her once. UMMMM....what's going on there I thought???? Alan chatted to various people in the circle around him, quinting furiously although they were only inches from him. I maneuvered myself around the circle trying to catch his eye and noticed a three women asking him for autographs. I had brought a nice photo of him with me and wanted him to sign it, so I moved in. He looked at the photo and said " Oh no I don't want to sign any photo's" This really took me by surprise "Oh go on it's such a nice one " I pleaded. "No I won't sign any photo's" he repeated and then added "I'll sign one of those though" He pointed at a Snow Cake ticket some other girl was holding out. The other girl asked if he could borrow my pen and I gave it to her as I hunted in my bag for my ticket. He quickly signed his name on my ticket as I asked about Old Times. "I don't know yet you will have to wait and see" he said before turning away. I was a little disappointed he had not recognized me. But he wasn't in the right frame of mind for friendly chats I thought, totally different from Hampstead you couldn't believe it was the same guy. He wore a black open necked shirt, casual black jacket and blue jeans. His hair looked like it needed a good wash, rather greasy with mixed colours of white, dark grey, dark blond and a lighter brown dyed top. A young guy with his mum next to me started taking to me, "I think it's going to be difficult to talk to him...I must remember not to mention Harry Potter...if I was Daniel Radcliffe I wouldn't have a problem" I thought he looked familiar and then I remember who he was, the guy who played Wood in the Potter films. what's his name Sean Biggerstaff I think. Anyway his mum kind of pushed him forward and he managed to have a quick chat with Alan. It was time to go in and see the film then, so I left Alan chatting and went to find my seat. Eight rows back, dead center. The producer introduced the film, and a guy from the autistic society thanked everyone for their support. Watched the film, enjoyed it more the second time somehow, the audience didn't laugh all the time as before. I was prepared for the car crash part....note to anyone going to see the film stick fingers in ears when Vivianne starts singing in the car as they stop at a junction. It is sooooooo loud!!! I smiled to myself at every ones reaction as they jumped in their seats and yelled out, covering their ears in fright! Afterwards some leather seats were arranged on stage, five of them, and in they trooped. The autistic society chairman, the producer, writer Angela Pell, an autistic girl (Roz) who looked a spitting image of Linda in the film and our dear Alan, last seat far left as usual with glass of water under his chair which he fiddled with constantly. There were some interesting questions and the interactions with Roz and Alan were funny as he had never met her before tonight. Although she was on set with sigourney giving her instructions she refused to be social with them or have them in her house. Sigourney had copied this girl precisely. Alan got a smack at one point because he touched her while talking. He thought this was really funny and curled up laughing. I noticed that Alan's memory/alertness was lacking alot last night. He couldn't remember the name of the director of Snow Cake (Marc Evans) and had to be reminded. Also he usually responds very quickly with answers to questions, last night he was literally lost for words and their were long periods when he just looked at her floor and ummmed and arrrred unable to put a sentence together and finally had to be prompted by the producer. This happened quite a lot and was a bit worrying. He also mentioned that he thought he was in some degree autistic himself as he told us about the things he does at home, lining up pencils, straightening mats and such like. He also said that he didn't think he would be able to work much longer and fears every film will be his last. The session ended and they stood around the doorway for a while as the people left. Rima had disappeared. I stood and chatted to Angela Pell the writer for some time before Alan interrupted us to tell Angela he was going. He apologized to me for butting in. He hugged Angela and kissed her on both cheeks as I looked on wistfully. Alan left. I heard the producer say to another person "What's up with Alan and Rima?" I didn't catch her reply. I stepped outside into the night and it was pouring of rain, with no coat or umbrella I got a taxi back to the station and sat on the train home pondering over the evening which had indeed been interesting to say the least..........
