Dumpy Doris, I agree with Emily Rose - I love the movie Dogma even though the liberally sprinkled 'f'-word is, to me, a total lack of information - like blank spots. Just there for shock effect, but adding nothing to the message. It's actually not anti-religion or even anti-Christian, it just tackles some of the . . . well, dogma of some Christian denominations. Makes you think about it.

I agree that religion is very important to many people and a great comfort, and that is wonderful. And anyone who needs to believe in something absolute which is not to be questioned shouldn't (and wouldn't, I'm sure) watch a movie like Dogma. But for others, it makes some interesting points and Alan is very funny - 'Or you'll do what? Hit me with a . . . fffish?'

*SPOILER ALERT*

I love God at the end when she, after putting everything right again, goes off to smell flowers and do handstands! A joyful diety!

Dumpy Doris - Your comments about Dogma tweaked my curiousity.

Religious humor makes me nervous.
I'm NOT trying to pry -- Dogma isn't everyone's cup of tea -- so please don't feel pressured to respond. I just found your confession (whoa - there's a religious pun!) very interesting and wondered if you'd like to share an explaination. You can email me, or post of the hen network if you'd rather not do it here.

Things have been awfully slow on the AR front since Berlin, haven't they. Sigh...wonder what he did to celebrate his birthday?

Dumpy Doris, I love the movie Dogma but hate the language actually used throughout the film. The humor was good and George Carlin was so funny as well. I am a big fan of George Carlin also (not his colorful language in his past yeatrs) but his comedy in recent years is a lot tamer as he ages. and what he says really hits home!
Did you ever watch the Father Ted series on PBS??? It is so funny and the housekeeper is a riot.  Try that one sometime as it may be more in tune with what you like.  I also love the Fawlty Towers series and am looking forward to the Monty Python Series coming to PBS in April.
Have a good one hope to see you all soon.

The first time I saw "Dogma" I only watched it a few minutes. Religious humor makes me feel nervous. Some people find much needed comfort in their religion. I think they are fortunate.

But, I still can't watch "Dogma",  silly me.

Moro, I had such a good laugh about the reporter's mentioning us "hens" that I thought I should at least tell him that we are NOT a bunch of stupid hens, grin... . After I read about the winner of the Affiliate Theatre, however, I switched my PC off - angry as I was, pfffffffffffff, and so I missed his commentary. NOW I understand Peekabooh's comment on the GB, too, blond moment. I hope I did NOT offend anyone here - esp. Catsplay - to have been so "brazen" to explain the hens. That's my *humour" (as the Renaissance would comment on it) - first act then think (yeah, in spite of my age - sometimes it just came over me).

BTW, who wrote him in the first place about the hens?

Am Rosenmontag bin ich geboren, am Rosenmontag zu Mainz am Rhein - I am singing today while only  watching all the carnival processions in Mainz, Cologne (Köln) and Düsseldorf. Stupid me I decided NOT to attend it in Cologne due to the weather and papers to write  Food Fight

A great day to everybody

thank you for the answer Claudia.

About taking photos , here in Italy is not allowed . We can't take photos anywhere: musem, art gallery, church and many other artistic places, they put a sign on the door with NO CAMERA allowed. Mostly here is to sell you the books with images and photos but as Chris said, some places are also to save the art works from flash. I guess every place has it's own policy about it so we find many differences

For me it's easy to think that everywhere is the same way until I read from others that comparing shows differences

it's cool to learn how different many things can be, thank you all for sharing your experiences

Chris
2/23/06 at 03:43 AM

Comments:

I really don`t want to step on anybody`s toe here, I just want to share my opinion on the museum matter. In most art galleries or museums taking photos is forbidden. Imagine they could lose visitors if pictures would be floating around the web. Other museums are simply concerned about flashes damaging the quality of a picture. It may seem impossible but trust me, they are very concerned about the humidity in the air and things like that. So some art galleries or museums allow you to take pictures but without using flash. And some have already taken care of these possible problems and allow you to take pictures of any kind. Every gallery has its own policy but in most cases, it`s true that it`s forbidden. So let`s not get carried away here, I`m sure everyone just spoke from their own experience.

On the GB Meeressternchen sweetly posted a mobile photo of the ARt nabbed at the nationally gallery. It's a bit distorted and hard to get a good feel of it. Is it "legal" to take photos there? I really want a good clear shot of the entire work for my website, but certainly wouldn't want to get anyone in trouble. If they won't toss the photographer in jail (is that the right word in London?), if someone goes again, would you mind sharing the pix and any write up? Please!

Oh Hikity, that's a holistic or yoga thing, a concept from hinduism, I think. We supposedly have seven chakras or energy centers in our body. They're like energy points or nodes and are related with specific functions/areas.
When one have the chakras clean, unblocked and OK it is said that they're "aligned".

(Something like this, I'm not an expert... and less believer with due respect to those who do.)

It's just a matter of comparing AR photos from Berlinale with those others from Rex? The ones which have to be cleaned from watermarks, prior to the Berlinale event.
Anyhow, on those AR had "bags" under his pretty eyes

I don't bet on surgery, that leaves traces, hints here and there, and he looks great in a very natural way.

I don't think AR has been under the knife either. But I did comment on the Cerebral Hen Network that IMHO he's had something done to his skin. (it's okay, Catsplay - you don't have to hold your tongue!) He was positively glowing in Berlin!

Why do I think that? I have an obsession *cough* I mean 'habit' of pulling up high resolution photos of AR in Photoshop and examining him inch by lovely inch (a tough job, but someone has to do it!). So, I couldn't help comparing the Berlin photos to other shots taken within the last couple of years.

Please do not read if you prefer not to think or AR as a mere mortal or if scrutinizing his appearance makes you uncomfortable.

1) His pores look much smaller; skin tone smoother and more even; a healthy glow. I'm going through a series of micro abrasion treatments and have noticed the same thing with my own skin. IMHO, AR has had some similar treatment.

2) His jaw line and neck looked tighter and smoother. It was obvious that AR had lost weight, but at his age that would not tighten those areas. My dermatologist is touting a treatment he says "the stars" love. It's non-invasive and lifts the skin and muscles by tightening the collagen underneath with radio-frequency. He says the results are astounding. IMHO, AR has had something similar.

And if he has, I think it's great! AR makes his living with that lovely and timeless face, and I'm sure years of film/stage makeup, bright lights, difficult locations and stress is hard on his skin. There's nothing wrong with making your skin as healthy as possible!

Please Don't Kill the Messenger....

I have some disappointing news to report this morning about the possibility of My Name is Rachel Corrie coming to New York.  Claudia and I agreed that I should hold this news until after the AR birthday festivities as to not bring down the mood.

Over the past three weeks, I have been in contact with the New York Theater Workshop.  I had established contact with them via email, and throughout those conversations they had indicated that nothing was 'definite', but that announcment was to be forthcoming this week.  I had also been calling them once per week just as a double check, and each time I called, they said nothing was 'definite', but early last week they gave a strong indication that an 'announcment' was coming late last week, or this week.

Through my conversations with them, it was apparent that they are an extremely small theater.  I had inquired about the best way to obtain tickets for opening night, and they explained that they don't ever sell tickets to opening night, nor do they make them available to their 'members'.  They indicated the theater controlled and distributed opening night tickets (I assume to VIPS, reviewers, or whomever).

NYTW sells their tickets via Telecharge, so I was also checking the Telecharge site on a daily basis.  Yesterday, I was elated to find that a full listing for MNiRC, with preview and play run dates, ticket information, as well as info on post-talk discussions with post-performance discussions after every show, (woot!)  featuring a variety  of artists, journalists, and cultural commentators (details were not provided). I then called New York Theater Workshop to inquire about these post-talk discussions and to discuss the best method for obtaining tickets.

To my surprise, they indicated that they had indefinitely postponed the production, and that the information should not have appeared on Telecharge.  Needless to say it was an awkward conversation and the gentleman on the phone sounded somewhat flabbergasted.   When I tried to press him a bit more, the phone person indicated it would probably be a year or more before the production would be reconsidered.

At that point, I emailed my contact (who is the Artistic Director), seeking a definitive answer and any explanation that could be provided.  His response was,

"We have postponed the production indefinitely.  We were unable to make it happen in the very tight time frame that emerged.  It may be reappearing in London."

I thanked him for the info, and asked if he knew if the play was in dicsussion with any other theaters in NYC, or if things were a lost cause at this point.  His response was as follows,

"I really don’t know.  I think it is unlikely for a NY production in the next few months.  London seems more possible."

Needless to say I was extremely disappointed, as I'm sure many of you are.  Again, maybe some miracle will occur, but I am just reporting to you the information, which seems pretty credible to me at this point.  Realizing the situation, in the midst of things yesterday I did screencap all of the pages from Telecharge, for posterity sake, I guess.  The information was removed from Telecharge yesterday, within a few hours of my initial conversation with them.  You can view them here:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c364/catsplay/mnirc1.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c364/catsplay/mnirc4.jpg

If anyone knows or finds out anything different on this subject, or about another run in London, I am sure that everyone here would be very grateful to hear about it.

The frustrating thing is that it was obviously SO CLOSE (info posted and ready to go on Telecharge, etc).  Timing (OOTP?).  Political?  It's such a shame.

Roger.  Wilco.  Over.

However, please do not spend a lot of time researching unless you feel that you will get great enjoyment out of it or something.  I didn't mean for you to have to do that.

See the thing is, the song I have in mind is so perfect (yeah, behind the glass), but it's about a girl, not a woman, which kind of presents a problem for me.  So I'm not sure how I'm going to approach it.

But it's not going to be Teh Sexeh, I don't think.  More like Teh Sad and Beautiful.

I think the translation of that French article was already posted, CatsPlay.  I'm not totally sure but I don't have time to check it out.

As for Poliakoff, he is, IMO, a brilliant film maker.  BBC-A will be airing Friends and Crocodiles this Saturday and Gideon's Daughter (with the fabulous Bill Nighy!) is supposed to be coming soon.  I believe those are Poliakoff's two newest creations.

I had a chuckle at Frankie being amazed so much their stuff is making its way over here.  LOL

Stephen Fry will take a bit of getting used to but once you see his personality, you might love him.  I was first introduced to him in a little film called Peter's Friends.  The film also has Emma Thompson, Imelda Staunton, Phyllida Law, Hugh Laurie, Ken Branagh, and a host of others.  Rent it if you can--its funny but also a tear jerker.

SF has also done brilliant comedy.  He did some of the Black Adder shows.  He starred in Jeeves and Wooster (another show he did with Hugh Laurie).

Yes i'm joining in the covosation, but i'm not sure  what all this referal to spit and what have you is about ( yes i did read... some posts)

I grow to love alot of alans films, but i get to critical like: his part is to small or he shoudn't have died... well that seems to be the main one but oh well..

Die hard is my fav, it always has been. I like it when its a funny movie, or has elements of hilarity.

In modern history ... yes i'm sad to say school is still in the picture. We are doing the Romonovs  and Rasputin so now i have and excuse to watch alan over and over again and call it studing. And i think Rasputin is one of my favs too, its just so weird and quirky and Ian mcKellin relly looks like the Tsar

Ok SNOW CAKE, i like the sound of that, to me it doesn't sound boreing. But i can't say i'll see it at the movies its not a at - the -movies movie if you know what i mean. BUT I WANT TO SEE IT...

Catsplay, yes the conversation is gross, ha, ha, but not enough to ruin *my* appetite! <p>Also, what's frustrating for me is when a movie does not list AR as being in it, like I wouldn't have known he was in JK if not for fan sites.<p>Yet another list showed AR as being one of "top ten under-appreciated actors", in Parade Magazine. <p>Figure skating, just wanted to add to the artistic/sport discussion. I never fell dancing, but when someone decides to go out on slippery, hard ice at top speed, jump, spin around in the air, and then land backwards of one leg, all without falling, it sound way too atheletic to me. Over the years, I've heard they may include ballet in the Olymics because although it's artistic, it has alot of "hidden" athleticism. Then we all can be happy, dancing or flying over ice!   or just watching!

Dee - That was me. I'm sure he is aware of his affect on his audience . . . that's why he's such a good actor. And normally I can believe he's bad (Hans), so I need to watch CL again.

When I got it, I had borrowed some of AR's movies from the library and was building up my own library. So I was watching a lot of his movies as I bought them. I probably had just watched him in one of his sweeter roles - S&S or TMD - and couldn't get that feeling out. Usually I can watch movies 'innocently', as he so beautifully puts it, but occasionally. . . .

Speaking of guilt - I felt a little guilty feeling attracted to him when he was being so cruel. I don't find cruelty appealing at all in any way, shape, or form, so that was an unusual feeling. I kept thinking 'He's going to see the light. He won't be able to go through with it.' Like when he was going to pull out her toenail. After his semi-breakdown where he finally repeated what she was saying, I was sure he wouldn't be able to do it. But the dirty little devil did it, anyway. At the end I just came away feeling very uncomfortable.

The ending confused me, though. Maybe if I can get the script and read it, I'll be able to understand. It was very strange to me that, after all of that, she just walked out by herself and he went off some other way. Surely, I thought, a prisoner wouldn't be allowed to escort herself to her cell . . . was he just in her mind??? Couldn't be, it seems, since the theme seems to be not only sexual abuse but actual torture.

Chris - maybe someone thought that, in the movie, sweat would create a different feeling. Sweat could be seen as sexier by some than spit. Previous joking aside, I don't generally find either particularly appealing.

Its funny how the script says its spit and the movie clearly shows it is not spit, that its sweat dripping down, you even see it. Go figure, no different than the HP books differing from the movies.

I thought it was sweat that just dripped down to his lip and he blew  the sweat drip off of his lip, i didnt think it was spit.

Ok, on further examination of the movie -- he doesnt spit, it is sweat, it comes down the right side of his nose/face and it drips onto his lips and he blows the sweat bead off his lips.

now off to watch the rest of the movie, damn it. hee hee

Dee, just because AR is in there we don't have to like all the movies he did.

If it was not for AR I would have never watched a few movies of him and still it's heavy to see these ones that are not my genre ( am I a bad fan?)

Dee
2/19/06 at 02:16 PM

Comments:

Please don't get mad at me, but I was shocked when I stopped and counted the number of AR movies that I don't really like except for his character! I feel so guilty... Oh dear..."Bad Dobbie, Bad Dobbie"! But, AR is so good that he creates memorable characters even in mediocre films.

SPOILERS:

I watched the DH commentary a long time ago and was amazed at the amount of hidden symbolism -- BUT! IMHO the symbolism was TOO hidden. When you reach the end of a film, everything should suddenly become clear with a big "ah ha!" moment. But in DH the symbolism was so vague that none of it registered until the director pointed it out step by step.

Sorry - Can't remember now who said they couldn't get past AR's sexiness to see him as a bad guy in ClosetLand? Here's an AR quote that mentions that: "Who I am gets in the way of people looking innocently at the parts I play."  So...he seems to be aware that sometimes he is his own worst distraction.

Jan

Comments:

Chris - My problem with Closet Land was that I couldn't hate him. I did sometimes feel sorry for him. The wonderfulness of himself - He Who Must Be Adoredfor Pete's sake! - prevented me from being able to 'buy' him as an abuser. I'm sure that it was most likely because of the mood I was in or maybe I had just watched S&S or TMD. But, as Alfan said, he was delectable in that film! In Die Hard (I hate that type of movie) I believed that if I was in the same room with Hans for any length of time, I'd probably end up dead, but Hans was controlled, even cold. In CL he's supposed to give you mixed feelings, I'm sure. The only problem is, I had too much difficulty seeing the 'bad' part.

I felt sorry for her, certainly, but couldn't stop drooling at him long enough to really see his character, I guess. I would like to read the script - that would probably get me in the right frame of mind. I promise next time I be sure I haven't watched him in any loveable roles right before, too. And maybe if I ate a lemon while I watched it would help the drool problem. . . .  We need a drooly emotie!

Seriously - I would love to read the script. I have read that it is informative. The parts where they come close to showing actual torture - the clapping on her ears, the toenail, and the machine at the end - were very disturbing, as they were meant to be. However, garlic and apple (tomato? I dunno) began to sound pretty tasty delivered by those lips!!!!! Well - I was serious for a second, there. . . .

Alfan - I'll have to watch the commentary on Dark Harbor now! That sounds very interesting. I was bamboozled through the whole movie (as I usually am - clues escape me completely [i.e. The Sixth Sense]) and felt sorry for poor David, thinking that she would cheat on him eventually. When he turned on her I thought 'Where is this coming from?' She seemed basically pretty nice to me. I felt like I'd gotten a slap in the face (I'm sure that was intended). It was only at the end, when they killed her, that I realized it was all a plot to get rid of her from the beginning. But I still missed clues like the stranger knowing how David likes his coffee! I may find a whole new appreciation for the film. Of course, one of the things I like about Alan is that he does give you a slap in the face every now and again. . .keeps you on your toes. . .and then there's that tushie. . .beautiful! What a brave man!

Judas Kiss did have some funny moments in it. I liked it better the second time I saw it, certainly. I just have to fast-forward past the alien lesbian movie part and her in the meat plant - my arms hurt just looking at that. Yuk! I say. IMHO. . . .

Dark Harbor, Judas Kiss and Closet Land Spoilers.

Chris, Jan and anyone else who didn't like Dark Harbor.

I too did not like this movie the first time i watched it, then being the big commentary nut i am i watched the commentary. I was aghast at what all i missed in the first viewing--the looks, the comments, the hidden messages ( like when David comes down from the bedroom the stranger makes him coffee, puts sugar in without even asking David what he likes, and i totally missed the fact that the stranger when reciting his thoughts to her and she is writing it down that it is her own suicide note). I then watched it again and realized what brilliant acting there is in the movie, ok, its not his best movie by far but he is brilliant in it, so is Norman and Polly.

May i suggest watching the commentary while watching the movie, it might help.

And as for Judas Kiss, i again didn't like the movie the first time then i watched it again and i really really like it now, not just the Alan and Emma parts but i like the humor in it too. Like i love Reuben " i think I'm having an epilepsy"---"what" junior says--" you know, epilepsy-a vision"---"you mean an epiphany" junior says.

It took a bit to take use to but i now think that is one of my favorites to watch.

I also loved Closet Land not only because he is delectable in the movie and he is in every scene but its a good mind bending movie, will or wont he break her. I mean that has one of the most sexiest Alan moments i can think of , when he is leaning over the grill and the sweat drips off of him,,,,,,,,,,,,,yum, and what that man can do with garlic and a tomato. More brilliant acting on his behalf, when he is the other characters, a masterpiece of acting abilities.

Laura, actually it comes out of nowhere to be precise. He basicaly tells her that the years spent together were spent "in a coffin". She somehow seems cold to him now. And suffocating. It`s a pretty weird thing because as a viewer you cannot begin to understand where did it all come from, she seems perfectly nice and caring. And I won`t go further with this because I`ll start REALLY picking on the film! I don`t think I have a transcript around but I`ll look for one.

Jan, you`re picking a fight with me re:Closet Land!  Kidding kidding! Just teasing. Actually me, CatsPlay and a few others were having a chat about it at her LJ. I think reading the script will make it more intersting and belivable, there are many things that were left out (some for good reason, but some were really helpful  in discovering the plot and hidden meanings) and yes, i agree it`s not a pleasant film. But the idea that I found interesting is that you can HATE his character but fel sorry for him at the same time. The way he talks about her as a child (in the script) is quit similar to the way Humbert talks about Lolita in the novel with the same name. It`s fascinating and disgusting at the same time. Just like the film. I think a more experienced director would have done wonders with it.

I`ve heard your press conference didn`t work, so sorry to hear that,. I`d love to help you out but it takes forevr to upload bigger files with my connection. But I`m sure someon hr will help you out!

Come on guys, what do you say, Jan missed the man in action, let`s give her a hand!

Emily Rose - I love that dance, too! But also when he turns to Margaret Thatcher's portrait and says, 'Did you have problems like this . . . of course you did, you saucy minx!'

Dee - In general, I didn't like Judas Kiss except for AR and ET - I love both of them always alone or together. I did like the twist at the end, though, where the girl finally figures out that she had been set up to take the fall.

Alma - I thought it was headphones at first, too. It must just be a trick of the light and shadow.

Chris - Dark Harbor left me with a bad feeling - because of the scene where David is really being nasty to her in the kitchen and because it became obvious to me that he had married her from the beginning to get her island. A total manipulator! But, then, AR never claimed to choose films according to whether they made people comfortable. . .I remember reading an interview where he said something about that (. . .I defy you to find it uninteresting). I only watched it once but I may again someday just to see what my reactions to it would be the second time. And, then, there's his tushie!

I can't say I like Closet Land, either. It's the only film in which I couldn't buy AR in his role. I'll have to try it again, too, to see if I see it differently.

Judas Kiss SPOILER!

LESBIAN porn scene? I thought that was a guy there! Ups! How oh how will I ever get through this?!

END Judas Kiss SPOILER!

Alba - it`s ok, really, the movie had not-so-good reviews even with him in it so...Personally, I like this kind of quiet, intimate films. But I have to say I wasn`t a Sigourney Weaver fan untill now. It would have probably been a film that I would have rather waited to se on DVD or television. I can hardly see it in a big cinema as it is. But I find the story fascinating and his role really suites him. We`ll just ahve to wait and see but stay calm, no one`s jumping at your throat. I`m not ashamed of the fact that I abssolutely HATED Dark Harbor, for instance. Being a fan doesn`t mean worshipping every movie he`s in.

Well...we do break out the whips and chains every once in awhile, but that's merely for recreational purposes. *snort* No one gets upset in here because of a difference of opinion unless you're rude. -- SPOILER -- Believe me, if AR hadn't been in Judas Kiss, I would have kicked the movie out right after the alien lesbian porn scene and smashed it with a golf club! But, I've learned that AR can create a wonderful, indepth character that lingers in my mind even in the midst of a real stinko movie.

Was that rude? *Bowing my apologies to the Judas Kiss fans around the globe*

Hi! Where is everyone tonight? Usually it's so busy in here.
Anyway, I finally got the DVD of Love Actually!! What a great movie and Alan was so wonderful in it, though I really loved Hugh Grant too as the Prime Minister especially when he did that dance! Still laughing thinking about it.
After busily reading posts here and the GB at Claudia's I just wanted people to know that I had an update about Toga the Penguin. (No one has found him yet as far as I know) but his parents are now trying again and have another egg they will hatch probably in February. I sure hope the security is better for the penguin trio this time around. I will also keep my fingers crossed that little Toga will somehow be found and as the other poster said maybe in a collection with other rare birds. We can only hope.
Have a good weekend everyone. I think I'll watch my Love Actually again tomorrow, Cant wait..sigh-I should have pleasant dreams tonight.

Buenas Dias, Alba! No beatings here. There have been several AR films which I would never have seen if he hadn't been in them - Dark Harbor, for one, and I can't say I like that because his character was so obviously (at the end of the film) manipulative - others, as well.

He is a BIG draw for me. If nothing else, I'm always fascinated by his performance of a role.

Oh, heck - I just love to watch the man talk!  The 'droll life' of the mouth.

I've decided to post on this board, because what I'm going to say is just my opinion and not really AR related. I do expect to be beaten with sticks (not too hard, I hope) for this. I'm sure SC is a wonderful film and if it ever makes it to my town, I will be first in line to see it. BUT, if AR were not in the film, I have to say I don't think I would rush out to see it. I think it's one of those films that if I happened to see it, I would like it, or perhaps love it (time will tell), but it wouldn't draw me to the cinema. There's nothing that I've seen about the film so far that really REALLY catches my attention, except for AR.

I'm off to sleep now, so feel free to discuss amongst yourselves (or not) and I'll take the heat tomorrow (c'mon, I can take it) when I'm feeling slightly more rested ;-)

Buenas noches.

SNOWCAKE SPOILERS

Don't read if you don't want to know

This review is nice, and contains a few facts about the plot that I didn't know

***************************

Found at http://www.signandsight.com/features/602.html

Eating snow leads to orgasms. The Berlinale has a gentle start with Marc Evans' "Snow Cake" (official competition)

This year's Berlinale lifts off gently and without a bang. "Snow Cake" is an extremely quiet film which gives its protagonists plenty of space and jumps about cautiously with them. Which is just as well as each of them has enough to do just fighting their demons, and they're not ill-equipped for too much closeness. They are, in fact, ideally suited to their living environment which is the endless, snowy expanses of Canada with nothing but a gas station and a diner every hundred miles. It is in one of these that the taciturn Englishman Alex (Alan Rickman) has just met a very loquacious girl who he's just beginning to take to when a truck collides with his car, killing her. Still in shock, Alan sets off to find the girl's mother and give her his sympathy, as one would do in such a situation. But he was not prepared for Linda, no more than the audience could have been prepared for Sigourney Weaver, who with her carefully studied spontaneous movements, her open face and her vital intensity, has finally escaped the "Alien" ship.

Although or perhaps because he's not really capable of dealing with this autistic woman, taking care of her as the neighbours half-heartedly try to, Linda lets Alex into her world. A cautious relationship develops over the next few days which does both of them good. Thanks to Linda's pragmatic but always distanced manner, Alex begins to overcome his feelings of guilt, and Linda gains a temporary substitute for Vivienne. She tolerates Alex and – you never really know – perhaps even likes him. The gentle irony, which shines though Alex's English sense of humour and the wit of the sometimes slightly over astute Linda balance out the film's otherwise weighty subject matter - disability, death and life-long mourning (Alex committed a murder after his son was killed) – which otherwise might have buried the film completely.

While in "Rain Man" the psychic disposition of the protagonist was developed in some detail, here it's simply there. Alex accepts the way Linda is with a very British sense for the eccentric. He is not allowed in the kitchen, and he must align his shoes in an exact row with the others. The dog is fed bananas and eating snow can bring on an orgasm. The tolerance is mutual. With his accent, and above all his past, he is not far from having the status of an extra-terrestrial in the little town. Linda is hardly bothered, she has other standards. Maggie, a third outsider played by a serious and weepy Carrie-Ann Moss, is interested by Alex's secret and rounds the group out perfectly, at least as far as Alex is concerned. Less so for the audience, which is happy to accord him his little affair with her, but could frankly do without it.

Loneliness, emptiness, and wide open spaces stretch between the protagonists in this film, which starts with a view of the sky and ends on a lonely lakeside road. The characters are seldom able to overcome each others' differentness. Sociologist Niklas Luhmann says communication is unlikely. But it is touching, Marc Evans adds, and finds a worthy image to show it. "Push me without using your hands", Linda says to Alex. Scenes like this long, helplessly heart-rending moment make the film well worth watching.

Hikity - In Germany, Moonlighting was called Das Model und der Schüffler.  Which, roughly translated, I believe means "The Model and the Detective".  There is a German fansite you can find here: http://www.bluemoon.delanus.de/serie.php  But maybe you were too young in the 1980s to remember.

It was called Clair de Lune in France, Luz de Luna in Spanish, Partnerid in Estonia which means "Partners", and, who could forget, Konnankoukkuja Kahdelle in Finland which means, "Dirty Tricks for Two".

Claudia - oh, I'm glad you are a fan!  Yes, it was quite an honor that I will never forget.  You can read about our experience here:

Must confess that I haven't seen any of the Olympics this year -- and I really miss it! Every time I turn it on, the US commentators are just yak, yak, yaking -- showing clips from previous years, interviewing old Olympic stars, whining about this & that, etc. Yes, I know the live action is happening at 3 A.M. "our time" in the States, but can't they just replay the action during  primetime without beating us over the head with their opinions and fluff?  *putting soap box carefully away now*

Actually, Hikity--   The Canadians did win the semi-final and will go for gold against Sweden who totally upset  the Americans. The U.S and the Canadians have dominated the sport of Women's Hockey and were suppose to be both going for the gold like they do in every event including last winter olympics and world cups. Its just that I dont think Sweden can upset both the U.S and Canada but if they do then good for them, snowballs chance in hell but its a chance.

I have been watching alote of the Olympics and have been enjoying the faster sports like Mogals, Luging, the Skelton, bobsledding, downhill racing/super-g, snowboarding pike and race. I have not watched much womens or mens hockey but now that its down to the nitty gritty, i will watch. Its a good time killler, if you ask me. Ok, now i go back to bed for awhile, Keith  made a early appointment to get his car taken in, so I kicked his ass out of bed, fed the cat, checked this site and now im going back to sleep as it is still dark here and frucken cold, only -40 this morning, not -47 like yesterday. Anyone else having that cold deep freeze. Whats the weather like in Germany now, is Alan needing his parka or does he just need that beautiful knit sweater (yukkie) that he wore in SC. hee hee

Ohhhh Vicki!!!!  Congratulations!!!!  I had no idea that Moonlighting has been out on DVD!  I'm a huge fan of that show and went to a site a long time ago and voted that it be released.  I can't remember the site but I also voted for Nash Bridges to be released too.

Anyway, what a super honor to be able to do a commentary for the newest release!!!  I can't wait to get my copies now!  Yes...I will be buying them.  I still can't believe that I didn't know before now that season 1 and 2 have been on the market for a long time now!  Grrrr!  LOL

Now if only Nash Bridges would be released.  I saw on eBay where someone is selling all the seasons for $99 but I've been afraid of the quality.  If I'm going to put that much money into DVDs...I want good quality!

Hikity, I haven't read any more of the essays in Mapping the World of Harry Potter yet.  My copy arrived amidst the Berlinale activity.  I did read the Snape essay though...if you want to discuss that part of it.  As soon as I pick it up again, we can move on to another one, if you like.

Hikity - I know! I coouldn`t agree more! I remember that at Salt Lake Olympics, ALL the programs that went for medall were technically perfect. Erm, no, scratch that. Not PERFECT! But at least they didn`t fell off after every jump! And thy had that certain FEELING to it. The artistic part was a major factor because it lifted their score a lot! They weren`t running all over the ice looking for jumps. Now every second spent on doing a choreography movement with their hands is a second wasted. Remember Yagudin`s program from Salt Lake? That would be a 5th place program now. I don`t know where they`re gowing with this. Instead of lifting the skater`s performances they managed to put a whole lot more pressure on their shoulders. Of course they fall like skittles now! All the fun in watching the men/women comptitions is over, at least for me. Dancing remains somewhat intersting but again, th judging system is purely bizzare. For example, I was abssoluetly thrilled by the French couple`s performance in Lyon. And the thing they did with their gloves was simply beautiful. But they ended up on what? 4th? Come on! Oh and speaking of which, I must congratulate you for the German Pairs couple! I forgot their names, Alyona something ... They really cought my attention, and that`s a hard thing to do thse days!

Sorry for this big OT even on the OT board!  Hikity touched a sensible chord in me!

The only things I could find are these two, which I think you ar familiar with. The famous Wawa birdie sweater and the...the..the...*rubbs head*...I have no idea what THAT is! (It`s a bird!...No, it`s a plane!...No, It`s a fork with wings! ) Dunno if that helps, but I can`t find anything else. And I don`t know if that`s exactly ARt, unless you count knitting.

Chris, I agree with you in every respect! And I am somewhat shocked about the problems nearly all of the skating athlets have - all the falling - are they going to jump a 10th fold Lutz or Rittberger one day??????? Dee - Just woke up, I`m planning a pic scanning right away, I`ll see if there`s anything I can digg up.

Alfan- how did you cope with that awful temperature yesterday? Man, and I thought MY -25 was a biggie!

Laura - Wooohoooo! Can`t wait!

Hikity - I saw your post re: Ice Skating on the main GB. Better answer here. I`m happy for the Italians, yes, they weren`t FABULOUS but the then again there wasn`t much to do with that song. And I`ve grown tired of Navka/Kostomarov winning it all so I took it as a breeze of fresh air. Damn it, what did Chait do?! I LOVE them! And she just fell out of thin air! *cries*

But as for th judging part, I think I can clearly stat that the new sistem CAN be subjective too.The "computer" doesn`t do the points on his own. The only difference is that the judges appreciate the value of an element right after it was done and not as an overall. A "HUGE" change indeed.  Just look at the men`s competition. I agree, Plushenko is the best eligible skater out there at the moment. BUT! His points, even after the short program seemed like an exaggeration to me.

O.K., now I have a bit of off-topic news.  One of my other obsessions has been the television show from the 1980's, Moonlighting.  About four years ago, I joined together with 4 other fans I met online and we created a website to try and get this show released on DVD.  We attached a petition to the site and gathered many signatures.  Our goal was to demonstrate to those who held the distribution rights that there was enough interest in this DVD to make it profitable to release.  Well, we were finally successful and the first two seasons were released back in June.  It was quite a success!  As a "thank you" to the group of us who started the campaign, we were invited (back in September) to come into a recording studio and do fan commentary on the season three release!  Season three was just released last week.  If you like the show...buy it!  If you don't or you're just not sure....rent it and you can hear the voice of yours truly doing voice-over commentary on episode #32, "The Straight Poop".  The distributors asked us not to say anything until the DVD was officially released....so that's why I'm only saying something now.  But it was a once-in-a-lifetime blast!  O.K....bragging session is finished.  Back to lurking.

Just a couple things to say before i go to bed.

#1-that is the tackiest shirt i have ever seen him wear, but we also see him in a tacky hawiian shirt and that was for a skit on stage, we also saw him in a real tacky sweater but that was for a movie role. So if my calculations on Mr. Alan Rickman who i think is one of the best dressed men around is correct, then i would have to say that is a prop shirt of some sort or something he had to put on for some reason, because i dont think he would  have that in his own wardrobe, he has the tendancy to wear things repeatedly ( fish or safety pin shirt, patch jeans, grey wrinkled blazer,) and i have only seen that shirt in one picture. Even when he is just sloppy, he wears t-shirts, not gauwdy ole big sunflower shirts, ewww.

and

#2- OMG, i have just finally finished watching the last two episodes of Barchester Chronicals, and if you dont mind me saying. Mr Obadiah Slope was a prototype for Snape.  He wears all black and even has buttons all the way up and down, his sneer is well developed and he like Snape is in it for himself. He is loyal only to himself, will do whatever it takes, lie to whoever to get what he wants. He was brilliant in this movie, slimy and detestable.  I dont know why but he just reminds me of Snape.

Maybe its the booze talking, i dunno. night.

Oh come...doesn't anyone like the flower shirt?!! I think he looks adorable -- but I'd love to know where it came from! Do you suppose it was a gift from those young people, or did he pick it out himself?  And is my eyesight still playing tricks on me, or is he holding something that almost looks like the same flower?

Chris - Don't forget to look for more "art" shirts!! That goes for the rest of you!! Please!!

Hi, Chris, thanks for your good wishes...this is going to be a hard summer

Laura, thanks a lot for your long list - wonderful links!

Jan, Nutella comes in a glas jar and for German kids it is the "same" as marmite is for English kids or peanout butter for American kids. It's basically made of milk chocolate and hazelnuts - I could send you a jar although I have no idea whether the customs allowed it, how much it would cost and whether the glass is going to break during its journey....

Peekabooh, there should be much cheaper flights to NY - but at the moment I haven't got much time for searching - have to go to the dentist again, can you believe it. No nerves anymore but still pain

Now, here comes a challenge to everybody who'd like to throw her 2 pennies in it:

The following is a Nirwana text of a song concerning The PARFUME with a lot of word plays which make it a bit difficult to translate it into German (someone asked me to do it). May be some of you could give me an English-English interpretation of (at least) those phrases I highlighted:

The Scentless Apprentice

"Like most babies smell like butter.

His smell smelled like no other.

He was born scentless and senseless.

He was born a scentless apprentice.

Every wet nurse refused to feed him.

Electrolyte smells like semen.

I promise not to sell your perfumed secrets.

There are countless formulas for pressing flowers.

I lie in the soil and I fertilize mushrooms.

Leaking out gas fumes are made into perfume.

You can't fire me because I quit.

Throw me in the fire and I won't throw a fit."

You all rock

Have a lovely day

Hikity

Hi everyone and a big thanks to you all for all the great stuff you have been posting since I have been in here. Dee you are so talented with art would you know how to somehow put AR ina picture that represents the olympics such as skiing, luging etc.

Anyway, thanks again guys and if anyone knows how to do an olympic photo with AR somehow superimposed in it, that would be a lot of fun to see. You guys are so talented. Most of the time I just lurk and dont type anything as I feel computer illiterate compared to you. I have been watching the winter olmpic games and reading the series of books by Jan Karon The Mitford Series" and also the series by Ann Ross-the Miss Julia series. well written and clean cut stories that make you feel good..

Chris - This is just stuff for my Famous ARt site. I'm including all ARt-related things, so having images of him posed WITH art will fit right on.

One other thing I'm looking for: I have a couple photos of AR wearing these really weird shirts (one with a giant sunflower on the front, another is a gaudy Hawaiian shirt). It would be fun to make an exhibit of AR WEARING ARt. Does anyone have any photos that might fit into that category?

Laura - I've never heard of nutella, but that bread (I love home-made bread, too) with nutella and whipped cream sounds unbelievable!

I love dark chocolate best. I don't like milk chocolate (the favorite in the U.S.) - I think that's for people who don't really like chocolate.

I like to make a drink like this: I make a cup of hot cocoa and add a slightly rounded teaspoon of coffee, some almond extract, a heaping teaspoon of a 'Cappuccino - French Vanilla flavor' mix we can get here (basically dry creamer, a little sugar, artificial sweetener, and a little coffee), more artificial sweetener, and a little milk to cool it to drinking temperature.

Mmmm - like getting a hug on the inside!

Watching a morning show which is being broadcast from Italy during the Olympics, I heard of bicarin (that's how they spelled it in the caption). Sounds similar only no sugar. That might be too bitter for me!

I'm diabetic (controlled with diet) so I can't have much sugar at one time, but I reserve all of my allowed amount for chocolate!

Does anyone know what AR is doing in this photo? Could it be from a studio recording session?

Another question: Can someone tell me the name of the statue and the city from the famous kilt photo? Sorry! I know it was mentioned before, but I never made a note of it.

One last question for tonight: Remember the lovely photo of a bare-chested AR hugging the statue head? (how can we forget, right!) Does anyone know WHY AR was posed like that? Was it for a magazine article or something? I don't suppose anyone knows if that "head" was a replica of a famous statue...?

I`ll leave you the joy of discovering Alan piccies as I am not much of a detective, but I`d like to see if I can find som new stuff concerning other personalities. Is that ok? Thank you in advance! Happy Valentines day to everyone! I hope that no one is having a bad day, because I know it can be a bummer if you're not with anybody, or if you see somebody with a big bunch of roses and you didnt get anything.  Well, I didn't really get anything, except a Valentine from my best friend, which I knew about.  It was so funny, because we both sent each other one! Also, I got twenty dollars for "mad money" from my aunt.  Also, i think it was kind of bad today because the guy who i kind of like has a friend, who asked me if i was stalking the guy i like, and i started to blush. It was insane.  We love you ALAN! Happy Valentines Day!

Christina, for the monthly vote, Hello selects men that have appeared in their magazine and I am sure AR got lots of attention with the opening of Snow Cake.  But I still think its a hoax when it gets down to the yearly one so I'm only going to vote when I think about it and not worry over it. Besides, I really do think AR would scoff at such a thing (JMO though)

I Am Sam was a brilliant film!  I love it.  I have never cared to see Sean Penn in anything until I saw IaS.  Now when I surf into one of his films, I'll stay long enough to see if I want to see it.  LOL

Yep, I do believe that AR is a fan of Rufus Wainwright's.  I love the song he does for the IaS soundtrack!

Claudia, I am Sam was such a brilliant film and the soundtrack is simply divine! Sean Penn and Dakota Fanning acted wonderful together. It`s also a chance to see AR`s co-star from Fallen Angels, Laura Dern.

I see Alan`s on the weekly Hello poll...do you think they wanna make up for last time?   I can`t help but wonder how is it that he`s there with all that young (and most of the times overrated) flesh! Makes you wonder, ha? I thought he wasn`t SUCH a "popular" fellow.

Hikity, i so agree with you on your assessment of reporters or whoever sometimes taking words and twisting them. It was a totally innocent comment by Alan that was twisted into what the reporter wanted. I also think that the one reporter was put in his place when he asked Alan about " how does it feel to have Sigourny Weaver steal the movie from you?"----what a stupid question and I laugh so hard at Alan's face after the question and how it took him about 10 seconds to answer him and when he did, i think he did a great 'off the cuff' comeback.

In case i havent done this before, i will do it now.

Dee - Re: St. Valentine - What Hikity said! It`s exactly the same way here but I gotta hand it to you, teenagers go NUTS over this thing! It`s a bit annoying, because we have the same holliday, only that it`s set on February 24th. Kids (well teenagers, whatever ) forget about that. I`d like to stick with it though, it`s part of our national identity. But the again, I have to agree with Laura on this one, it`s not THAT special. Actually I can`t remember EVER doing anything special this time of year. Even when I was involved with someone I always felt it doesn`t have to be a special day to celebrate love and all. Plus I`m not that romantic anyway.

I hope you don't mind my excessive posting here today, but I wanted to share my impression of the press conference with you . I just watched it without the voice-over and found out 2 interesting things: first, our Man said: "acting has never been so easy to me thanks to her" and he referred to Weaver's great performance and not to acting being difficult - it was wrongfully translated as far as I remember and the journalist (American I think) twisted his words when he came up with this stupid Harrison-quotation...

Second, our Man answered to the question about sight-seeing in Berlin by saying: " I hope we don't spend toó long in this sort of situation" while smiling (btw:) .

In one of the less nice reviews (it was "articulate" I think) again the writer twisted his words (stating sth about His inferior thinking of journalists or so).

My conclusion: never believe what people write about other people, especially the so-called "quotations" are usually wrong, twisted or cut so that they fit the writer's intentions...Quite some time ago an interview with my father was printed in a serious German magazine and all the "quotations" were changed here and there - he even never said some of the sentences.

Now that's really enough outpour for today. Ciao Bellas

Dee, "they" (whoever they are) have been trying for years to "install" Valentine's in Germany and some might be tempted by the alluring commerce to buy something for each other, but it has never been a special day in Germany. I hope you don't mind when I say that the people I know (young, middle-aged and older) do not care at all about the 14th of February...

S.Valentine here too pushes everyone to buy, to go out for expensive dinners and to go travelling or to buy diamonds etc.

Husband and I are not too taken by this type of things, we love to exchange a gift and usually we take advantage to buy each other something the other one needs/desires, ehehe: it was a pair of wheels(word??) for his bycicle for him and a beat-them-up game for me, lol, romantic,eh?

but we're not really celebrating it: there's work and school like every other day so nothing really changes

Is Valentine's Day (Feb. 14th) a global holiday or just something we celebrate in America? If it IS a world-wide love-fest, I'm curious how the rest of you celebrate. I notice that in the US, the holiday gets more commerical (and expensive!) each year. Now, they push giving diamonds to "prove" your love! wOw!

I'm a little bummed - hubby and I are apart this year. sigh... The snot better send me FLOWERS!! And candy!! Wait a minute...what am I thinking? I mean CANDY and flowers!! A handful of daisies sure ain't gonna get me thru the long night. This requires massive amounts of chocolate!

Hiya, good morning to everybody. Zzzzz was one of GB-posters last year and I haven't "seen" for a while...

I once read (and it could have been from our Man) that sometimes/often actors are quite surprised when seeing "their"  film (premiere) for the first time. I think the OooA was taken by surprise about some story lines he hadn't seen before (and I am not so surprised either). Most actors were British (except those from the US scene I suppose) but some characters were not really British...IMHO. Nevertheless, I love Love Actually

Yeah, "Love Actually" has so many stories that you feel as only getting glimpses of each one of them. There are a few I would have prefer to be more detailed or developed, those ones let you feeling that something is missing.

What is the word? When the end of a movie is not final, I mean, when there are loopholes and you can think of a dozen possible endings...
Well, that way.

I still liked the movie, I took it as many mini movies into a bigger one and it's fine. Of course, my favorite parts are those of AR. I love see him acting with Emma Thompson, they look great together.

Nahima -  I think I remember an interview in which AR said that working on Love Actually was like working on a small movie since he had his own story line with Emma Thompson and a few others that only occasionally crossed with the other story lines (like the concert at the end).  I think that's what his comment in this interview is referring to; that the finished product was then very large in scope with many other characters and storylines.

"What’s your opinion of British film at the moment?

Today there’s Love Actually [which Rickman starred in] and Hugh Grant in Notting Hill and that kind of marriage of what America wants England to be… \I think what worries me is that we lose our own culture… It’s odd because when we went to see it I was thinking, who are all these other people in this movie that Emma Thompson and I were in?"

(Last question of the Australian interview to AR, at Berlinale)

-----------------------------------

Help! I'm confused with this answer.

I understand the part where AR said he is worried about losing their own culture by making movies America's style or depending more in what America wants to see rather than in what England really is. (Am I right?)

What I don't get is the last part:

"...who are all these other people in this movie that Emma Thompson and I were in?"

Is he talking about Love Actually characters or actors?
I saw that movie and thought they were all english actors. (Have to check in IMdB)
Anyway, the majority must be. Is he talking about the characters' developments or what else?

Sev - I haven't heard that interview yet, but I think it sounds like a typical AR comment about acting. You've probably seen these quotes before, but it's a peek into his feelings. I think he has a love/hate relationship with more than just white silk! Maybe this first quote explains a little of what he was talkinng about:

"All I want to see from an actor is the intensity and accuracy of their listening."

"Acting touches nerves you have absolutely no control over."

"I get stage fright and gremlins in my head saying: You're going to forget your lines."

"I might very well break the picture by playing it so-well, so grand-manner."

"It's a nightmare to sit and watch a film that I'm in. There's a horrible inexcapability to it."

"The main trouble is that as an actor you've got too many memories of horrible rehearsals."

"What's interesting about the process of acting is how often you don't know what you're doing."

Since this was completely ignored on the main book I will give it one more go here...

In seeing a clip on BT Yahoo about the Snow Cake press conference - I was struck by AR's comment - about how easy SC was for him. he found that Signourney's performance was 'true' and 'truthful' - she enabled him to just 'Be' as opposed to acting - and that he 'finds acting difficult'! *shock*

I was quite taken aback by that comment from him - given that he is so passionate acting, RADA etc. I hope some courageous, entrepid journalist asks him about that someday... if that wasnt picked up on at the conference...

Any thoughts - anyone? I am very surprised no one picked up on such a revealing comment from AR...

Dee, I had the same reaction when I read that interview featuring the lovely phrase "a roll in the hay". But ALAS! It`s left to our imagination.

What would Alex be DOING in a hot tub anyway?!

I know nothing of the murder, however it seems he`s travelling to meet the mother of his deceased son or something like it.

Ok this could be weird but I find myself watching the "dinner scene" over and over again!

Sev!! I've missed you, girl! With all those projects going on, make sure you take time to get yourself HEALTHY! Do you hear me, missy? No living on wine and crisps. Eat nutriciously, get some fresh air & exercise, and plenty of sleep. Are you listening? Don't make me come over there...Oh wait! Pleeease, make me come over there!

It seems that my computer got fried...so have to get a new one. Sigh...$$$  For now, I'm using my son's computer *tightly holding a baseball bat to keep the rabid 14-yr-old at bay* so I must be quick. But, I hope to catch some of you in the chatroom later.

Snowcake - Does anyone know what kind of "murder" Alex committed in the movie? Also...does this movie have a happy ending? The details I've read so far said Alex is forced to leave town and leave the woman he newly loves.  That sounds rather sad...

When it was mentioned on the GB that AR is wearing SHORT PANTS in one of the clips *SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE* I lured son away from his computer with a Snickers bar and locked him in the bathroom so I could download it!! Well...it wasn't as racy as I hoped (no bulging hot pants or glimpse of butt-cheek). Looks like jogging pants cut off below the knee...sigh... WHERE IS THAT HOT TUB SCENE??!!

Hey Chris *huggles*

I am exhausted but better too much to do than nothing at all. As tends to be the case, by the time it occurs to me to post some AR thing Ive found here, someone else has beaten me to the punch. Half my problem right now is finding things not already posted and not bookmarking them in Explorer... Its not enough to simply mention the factoid or newsbite ya know...

The health problems are seriously dodgy still... just one of those things. To say that I am busy is an understatement. Between work (now taking on day-to-day assistant management of my team), projects (the magazine, Paul Draper, etc) and the charity work I have no time for myself. Its enough just to keep up with all the email I get everyday - and even thats behind LOL since I cant access it from work anymore.

I would like to toss my hat into the Stephen Fry ring.  I adore that man and would like to follow him around and learn how to speak in that oh so eloquent I'm-insulting-you-while-smiling-and-using-big-words-so-that-you-have-no-idea-what-I'm-talking-about way.  It's so funny he was brought into the conversation because I am currently re-reading The Liar (my second favorite SF book).  I read this while I was in high school and am currently realizing how little I knew about the world back then because I'm understanding so much more now.  Also, Dee, don't be ashamed of that Alan Cumming fixation...you're not alone...he used to be a major obsession of mine back when he was in Cabaret.  I still love him now, but I'm afraid he's moved his way down my man pantheon.  Have a good day everyone!

Not a great review...but not quite horrible. Sounds like he didn't hate it...really...but just thought it was an odd choice to open the festival? But that's not exactly "good", is it? I do love the comment about AR's mouth! *snort* Tell us something we didn't already know!

Must confess that I'm not a huge fan of Weaver (can't really think of anything I've REALLY liked her in). But, I'm such a fangirly that I'm going to love the film whether it sucks or not just because of AR! *blushes* But for AR's sake, I hope the upcoming reviews are more positive!

Marlina:  wow, girl!  You haven't heard the Beatles either? (I remember you also saying you haven't heard any Billy Joel)  Sounds like I might need to make you a mix CD!  Hehehehe.

Brittany:  Well spotted!  The reason I chose a Beatles song was indeed to celebrate the day they arrived in the US!  You sang Twist and Shout more than one time in a row?!?!?  Your vocal chords must be sore!  That song is hard!

Chris:  Put down that lamp, woman!  You are forgiven  (Moro, that Who reference is for you.  Hehehehe)  I wish I could make a living just writing parody songs all day.  But alas, unless you are a member of Forbidden Broadway or the Capital Steps, it is very hard to make money at it.  Oh well, I enjoy it at any rate.  Some people write fan fics, and others like me slaughter the music of innocent people

As a side note, I just thought I let you all know that the saga of Blockbuster and the Barchester Chronicles is finally at an end.  I completed disc one yesterday and am now working my way through disc two.  Dear God, Alan was so thin!  And slimy!  And beautiful!  And hilarious!  I'm hoplessly amused by the extreme Britishness of this mini-series (Dear God, they had a five minute argument about the state of the locks in the church!) and I highly recomend it.  And now, back to work...

Why is it no one of you is there too? Such a shame.Watching Snow Cake twice a day...ach, I surely can't tempt you now.
Given chance, Chris how about me making a reservation for a room at the Adlon on your behalf? Pity you'll have to share the guy with Rima....But wasn't it what you wished for?
Well, we'll see to it. Perhaps a glance at the man all are so excited about. If not it's also fine with me Unlike a lot of other people being in Berlin these days we're not there to see AR. (At least not in the first place)

Hope all will have a chance to watch telly-broadcasting on the event and get lots of good AR-sightings.

Bad Dobby! Bad Bad! Guys, gimme a lamp or something to bash my head with cause I forgot to mention WhoGirl`s song parody in my latest post!!!! Who - I think you should make a career our of this! As somone would say...Bloody Brilliant!

Jan - Well I think it`ll be much easier with this film because although it IS considerably longer, it`s also rather poor in action. I mean there aren`t that many highlights as in Gof which makes me believe they COULD do it in a single movie. There was much movement also in GoF but OOTP is a much more static film but also, in my perspective, much more deeper. There are a lot of points to be made, also, it`s less a "blockbuster" as the previous one was. That , of course, if they do it right.Sadly, until now, I haven`t seen a HP film which I could say "yes, now that`s a GOOD movie". Actually, I watch them because of the wonderful cast and because of the books but re:quality...I`ve seen better.

Cheers everyone!

They said about Goblet of Fire that they didn't want to make too long a movie and couldn't really split it up. Order of the Phoenix promises to be another one that will be difficult to make into a regular-sized movie.

I think they could have made GoF longer and could do the same with OotP - after all, kids sat through the 3 Lord of the Rings movies and they were all very long.

What does everyone else think? Could they make them longer and be able to fit in more material that deserves to be in them? Whaddaya think????

You know it will be nice to see Gary and David work together again, it was good to see them in POA and now they will be under different circumstances. Sirius will be somewhat cleaned up. Now as for Snape, i cant honestly see Alan abandoning the role of Snape, he isnt the kind of person to do that, he sees something through to the end. He has said its a great experience to be part of something so wonderful as the HP phenom. Lets hope that WB asks him back and  if they have brains, they will. I remember GOF starting filming in April and Alan not taking part until September so just because filming has started and no announcement doesnt mean he hasnt signed. I am going on my gut and heart feeling, he will be back. There is no way in hell they could do without Sirius and there is no way in hell they can do without Snape. Occulmency is just way to important. Rest assure my friends he will be back,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I hope. No, im sure.

Great song, WhoGirl17!

And great news about David Thewlis and Gary Oldman. I really don't think they will cast anyone else for Snape except HWMBA - in a series, they always seem to try to keep the same people if at all possible. Unless someone just didn't work out and that's certainly not the case!!!

Okay, well, I am a huge fan of the beatles, and AR, so that song made my day, WHOGIRL17! It was so wonderful. I dont know if anyone else cares or not, but they came to america today in 64. Also, WHOA!I really could not imagine HP without AR. I would die! Now im gonna search every other site to find out. We should start a petition! It would be like a revolution.  It would be so cool if they werent going to put him in the movie, but we got them to pick him, and he would love us all so much that we could all have a party with him! Also, the band actually go through Twist and Shout today several times without stopping! YAY

Just checked on another website and Gary Oldman and David Thewlis (Sirius and Lupin) have been confirmed for OOTP.  They will start shooting in the summer.  Please,  oh PLLLLEEEZZZZZZZEEE tell us that AR will be playing Snape again.

I guess we can look at it that since these two won't start shooting till summer that Snape isn't needed till that time or later.  So they still have plently of time to sign AR.

It's okay that you didn't like the photos. That's why I included a disclaimer.

And yes, his face is still red in the manipulated pixs - like I said, I only removed some of the spots. The photos on the GB were very pale and over-exposed on my monitor, so I saturated the color to brighten them up. When I did, the worst of the spots became almost neon (not the way they would've looked in person). So, I just removed them. I didn't do it to fit his image to my expectations or fantasies. I consider it the same as removing a glare on someone's glasses.

Because I'm bored and I've been neglecting you guys...here's a lovely song parody in honor of The Man's up coming birthday!  Enjoy ladies!  (p.s.  Dee, what a beautiful sight you've put together!)

We want Sixty More!

(to be sung to the tune of "When I'm Sixty Four" by The Beatles)

You’re one year older, but still got some flair

Go on and take a bow.

And instead of sending you a Valentine,

We hope your Birthday is divine

Six decades on you’re still going strong,

You’re handsomer than ever before

You’re as young as you feel, You still make us squeal

We want 60 more!

You're older, it’s true.

Aged perfectly, there’s no doubt.

Our fine wine is you.

We could be happy, waiting in line,

To see you on the screen.

You could make Kate Winslet your blushing bride,

Or whip Kevin Costner’s behind

Flying in space or talking for God, yours in the voice we adore

We love you baby, don’t think we’re crazy.

We want sixty more!

Every afternoon we check the GB to see if there’s news

Or new pics to be seen.

We all scrimp and save.

To buy the DVD’s, with the man we crave.

Send us a picture, drop us a line, an autograph or two.

You could read the phone book and we would still pay.

Our cash slowly melting away.

Give us a performance, we’ll give you our hearts, yours forever more.

Will you still love us even if we’re nuts.

We want sixty more!

Hello Dee and All,

Yes, I am keeping up with all of the MNiRC and Snowcake stuff on this and the main GB - it is very exciting!   Yes, I lived through parasailing and surprisingly it was not scary at all (this coming from the world's BIGGEST chicken)....  it was really a peaceful and wonderful experience!  Bubba fishing was fun, my son caught a large strawberry grouper and was thrilled out of his head.  It was large, spotted, ugly and had huge bulgy eyes!  Today we are in Antigua and doing nothing much (I splurged on a ring for myself!).  Have been having very vivid and weird dreams here at sea -- not sure why (perhaps alcohol induced?).  Had some sort of dream that the hens were 'meeting' AR and when he showed up, it did not even look like nor sound like him.... but everyone was still acting like it WAS him and Dee and I were causing a huge ruckus insisting that this was NOT Alan Rickman.  Very strange.

OK, must run.  Talk to you all soon!

Chris,

ya little naught hussy...
Thank you so much for the pics of that dog... I zapped him a nickname ("Don the Mull") - not that he'd look all to pensieve but "Mull" is a small living creature (animal) in Africa without any kinda coat.

Jep, Hubby & I are leaving on Wednesday eve ter pay a visit to my Mum near Frankfurt and then fly over to Berlin. We'll stay in a very snug-cozy B&B in Parise Gasse, not that far away from "the event".
Am  truly sorry for Keith, who obviously couldn't make it through his agency. Accreditation was denied by the Berlinale press office since he didn't make it in time. Pity.

Marc's film to open Berlinale Festival
Feb 6 2006
Claire Hill, Western Mail

THE latest film from director Marc Evans is to open the Berlinale Festival this week, but he had begun to doubt if he had chosen the right career after his last film was given a decidedly lukewarm reception.
He threw himself into a year of earning no money and jumping on planes to meet A-list actresses to get together the funds for his new film Snowcake.
The hard work, resulting in a 27-day shoot in snow-filled Canada, paid off and now the film has been chosen to compete in, and open, the Berlinale Festival.
The annual festival, based in the German capital, has had 56 years of attracting some of the greatest filmmakers from Hitchcock to Truffaut as it became known for celebrating art house and independent cinema.
"Filmmaking kind of drives you mad. If I hadn't got Snowcake off the ground then I would have seriously doubted my own sanity about what I was doing.
"I was feeling a little bit browbeaten after my last film Trauma. It kind of tries your patience. There really are better ways to make more money, you do it because you love making films."
So for most of 2004, Cardiff-born Evans worked not on directing but setting up the meetings, the phone calls, the behind-the-scenes money raising needed to make a film.
However, the lack of success of Trauma, starring Colin Firth, left him with a bit of a struggle.
"It leaves you in a vulnerable position. You want to get the next film made but if your last one didn't go so well it makes the next one even harder.
"In a way I really had to fight for this to be made, and in the back of my mind there was a feeling that I was part of the problem."
Evans might have lost some faith in himself, but other people never questioned his ability.
Stuck in "horror jail", a result of making films like My Little Eye, the 46-year-old was pleased that Revolution Films let him take on Snowcake. His confidence only grew when he signed actors Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman and Carrie-Anne Moss. "It was easy getting them. The script was a winning script made for actors."
The part of Alex, a bereaved man who comes into the life of a high-functioning autistic woman Linda after a traumatic incident, was written with Rickman in mind, and he helped suggest the rest of the casting. "Alan suggested Sigourney for the part and once he did we knew it was right.
"To meet with her we had to say I was in America and wanted to meet for lunch, even though I was in Cardiff. Her people said she'd meet me the next day, in New York, so I had to just jump on a plane and fly to America.
"Within her opening two sentences we knew she loved it."
Debuting with House of America, in 1997, Evans bathed in critical acclaim and continued the success with his next films Resurrection Man and My Little Eye. But this is the film he hopes will cement his break-out work.
Despite the heavy topics of redemption and the issue of an autistic character, Evans says it is not a social issue film. "In fact it is really quite enjoyable, it is quite a romantic film."
It has already been bought for distribution across the world and Evans hopes the exposure from Berlinale will encourage the American studios to buy it.
He is flying out this week for the film's premiere on Friday.
"I was really, really pleased it was picked and especially that it is now in the competition. It gives the film a profile and hopefully it will get some interest."
Snowcake's stellar cast
Sigourney Weaver - Famed for her portrayal of Ripley in the Alien series and real life characters like Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist. For the role of Linda she took advice from, and visited, British autism sufferer Ros Blackburn.
Alan Rickman - The theatre and film actor, born to Irish and Welsh parents, became famous for his role as Hans Gruber in the Die Hard series. He is Snape in the Harry Potter films. He was so keen to play Alex in Snowcake he put up some of his own money.
Carrie-Anne Moss - The Canadian actress became a cult figure with her role as Trinity in the Matrix series, and Momento. As Maggie in Snowcake she plays the lighter character to Rickman and Weaver's complex ones.

Well, Chris, if Snape isn't in OotP and Lily is, that would be just too weird! But, at least there's this: until we learn that someone else has been cast to play Snape (well, I guess they could have lost their minds or something!), there's still hope. It's hard to say what they know but choose not to release to us.

I take hope from watching any HP interview that AR has done talking about how much fun it is to make them. . . .  I think I'll go watch one right now.

You will be shocked and surprised to learn that at this time there are no plans for Gary to appear in the next Harry Potter film. To say we are puzzled on this side about this is an understatement at the every least!

Yeah Yeah I know what you`re gonna say, that probably the scenes with him/them are scheduled later this year BUT aren`t these things supposed to be already set when they start shooting?

Alfan- tisk tisk tisk...Oh I so fully agree! *cough cough*

Amy and Dee- I think it`s ok to post modified pictures as long as it`s not anything obscene or something that could offend anyone. AND as long as you state very clearly what you`ve done in the process and also advice people, like Dee has, that they should save the old photos instead. It`s not so very different from any other modifications we have seen here. Also it`s a very common practice in publicity, etc where photos get tampered a lot, especially the one`s promoting certain products, etc. It`s not that I AGREE with it, after all, I think we should all see reality in all its forms but as long as you state very clearly the phases the photo has gon through, I think it`s pretty harmless. People decide to take a look at them, to save them, or they don`t. Perhaps posting them on the GB would have been a mistake but here? I think it`s alright.

CatsPlay- woohooo! Parasailing? I love that! haven`t tried it though, only once, but I managed to keep my eyes and fingers! You take care now and have a great time! And take pictures!!!

And now, just a rumour:

Even though production on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix started just today, Clarin.com, a major news website in Argentina, has reported today that the release date for the movie could be June 29 of next year.

Have a nice day everyone!

Dee, I am about to be honest with you. Turn away if you don't want to read it. I prefer the original photos. He looks like what he is, a 60 year old man who hasn't had any work done. So he's pasty and blotchy ... I really don't mind. And actually, Dee, your touch-ups make his face look redder and splotchier, at least on my monitor!  I think it's important that we don't project our own feelings onto him. Just because you would want your photos to be touched up doesn't mean anything.

I worked on a couple of the Whats On Stage photos to see if I could bring out more detail. The color and clarity looks much better here.

Claudia - if you think the GB folks would like them, feel free to re-post.

Note: I HATE to point out any of AR's flaws (to me, he is always PERFECT), but I feel I must confess to one bit of editing - I smoothed out some of the red blotches on AR's face. Nothing else was changed. As an old newspaper editor, I know that "editing photos" is a controversial subject. The way I look at it - if it was a picture of me, what would I want done. People who archive AR photos might prefer to save the original, untouched photos instead of these.

Wherefore art thou results sheet?
By Will Smale
BBC News business reporter

Rada tutor Greg de Polnay
Rada's Greg de Polnay says correct breathing is core to speaking skills
"Some people do still come in with the misconception that we are going to ask them to dress up as trees," smiles Andrew Lewis of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada).
Speaking in the rarefied environment of Rada's historic headquarters in Bloomsbury, central London, Mr Lewis and his colleague Greg de Polnay are detailing the work the famous acting school does for some of the UK's biggest companies.
For while the sensitive and refined world of acting might seem a million miles away from the hard-nosed business community, Rada is in fact in hot demand in the UK's boardrooms.
For the last five years, it has been offering business people and companies training courses in everything from public speaking to report presentation, leadership and team-building.
It even offers special courses to politicians, to enable them to deal better with situations in which they might face tough questioning.
And there is not a single human tree in sight.
Just the same Rada tutors who over the years have tought such famous alumni as Sir Anthony Hopkins, Alan Rickman, Kenneth Branagh and Glenda Jackson.
Presentation 'tools'
"If a business person wishes to improve their public speaking skills, we don't have any involvement in the actual content of their speech or Powerpoint presentation," says Mr de Polnay.
It is far from just an enjoyable day out pretending to be an actor
"Rather, we give them the tools they need to deliver that content in the most effective possible way."
With a variety of different course lengths available, from one or two days to more intensive one-to-one tuition, Rada in Business' clients range from accountancy giant Ernst & Young to insurance firm Prudential and even the Department of Trade & Industry.
"Ahead of a public speaking engagement, many business people put 100% of their efforts into the actual detail of the presentation," says Mr de Polnay, who has been a Rada tutor for 15 years, and prior to that, a professional actor for 21 years.
"But this is actually only 7% of the audience's attention. Instead, 55% is on the person's appearance and 38% on their voice.
"We help them to better develop this remaining 93%."
Nerves and sceptics
At a typical Rada in Business training day, people are taught everything from how to improve their posture to breathing and speaking skills - with each making many presentations in turn and seeing how they improve as the day progresses.
Lord Attenborough is a Rada old boy
"Breathing is absolutely vital," says Mr de Polnay.
"It is central to how you make your presentation in a clear and confident manner, rather than rushing through."
Mr Lewis, a Rada in Business account manager, says that while some participants can initially be nervous, the training events are intended to put people quickly at ease.
"We get some who are terrified when they come along, and others who can be rather arrogant and sceptical," he says. "So it is a question of psychology and balance.
"The courses are always held in informal venues, such as rehearsal rooms, rather than hotels - we call it the 'wooden floor' effect - and people are asked to wear casual clothing.
"For the more initially sceptical, they quickly realise that the courses are very, very professional, and that they can learn a lot.
"It is far from just an enjoyable day out pretending to be an actor."
Some large companies - who shall remain anonymous - now even call upon Mr de Polnay or one of his colleagues the day before they pitch for multi-million pound contracts.
"We have chief executives and chairmen who want us to help them choose which of their staff should be making the big presentation, and how it should be best approached," he says.
"We help them make an impact, instead of dying in 'death by Powerpoint'."

Almost never...OMG...I'm sick...I'm fantasizing about rubbing his knees with medicated ointment? Must peddle faster...

Personally, Dee, one of the reasons I like him beyond his acting abilities is because he isn't always stylish, groomed, and star-like. Those are a dime-a-dozen! He apparently cares more about being comfortable than being sure his shirt is tucked in, glorious pudge isn't showing, hair isn't perfect, and on and on. A natural man! Beautiful!

And what a happy look on his face. The stairwell surprised me, but it's kind of nice in a way - again, natural.

Sorry...can't contain myself: SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!  Those poses are such a radical departure from the usual, stiff "grip and grin" awards photos! This is insane...why am I so thrilled that he's sitting in a stairwell?? I don't know...but he's adorable! And look at that grin!! He looks so relaxed and pleased! Okay...I'll admit -- we have seen him more stylish, more groomed, more star-like...but I've reached a point in my fandom where I actual prefer these tiny, rare glimpses of the real man!! Thanks to Sue for posting those pixs! What a great way to start the morning on the exercise bike -- I'm peddling like a crazy woman!!

Hiya, morning to all of you.

What a lovely evening in the chatroom (for Dee it was afternoon) though it was so late that I had a lie-in. Dee, you distracted me with your explanation about the socks! I looked up "traction" this morning and NOW I understand...

Chris, I know! I never use all the stuff around a new device - whether it's my  mobile, my computer, my washing machine, tumble dryer....

Dee, you REALLY should catch Laura in there one day! We were exchanging emails last night and I was LITERARY crying with laughter!

Hikity - Oh how very thoughtful of you! Unfortunately, this....erm...IS the new keyboard!!!! And I DID spend a small fortune on it as it has these buttons for internet browsing and another set of buttons for music/movie players and ANOTHER set of buttons for desktop feautures....Too bad it didn`t last long. Plus I nver use the extra features. Come to think of it that WAS pretty stupid of me, wasn`t it?

It was fun to chat with some of you in the chatroom this afternoon! My...I always learn the most interesting cultural lessons in there. Today's lesson was: Englishmen aren't very good at sex...and they leave their socks on. When I asked if they did that for added "traction", I then had to explain to one of our German folks the meaning of the word. Must confess I was dismayed at the thought of our favorite Englishman wearing striped, knee-high tube socks...but, they reasured me that AR is half Irish and half Welsh. So...our fantasies are safe. Whew!

Sorry to miss Laurie and moro, though. Shoot! Maybe next time.

Oh! And the Snape fart video is absolutely awful! Shame on you for posting that! *giggling with glee* I'm glad you could share a moment of laughter with your son!

Reedpipe, yes that is AR's voice.  AR did two sound files for an English dictation site for which I believe is now not available.  Susan CA found the sound files about a year ago.

I'm ashamed to say that I can't remember who made that video file.  I'll have to look in the archives to find the creative soul. But I remember the morning after she posted it, I was in stitches myself.  Its a hilarious video.  LOL

Hello all! Some of you might remember that my hubby had wanted to surprise me last month by taking me to "Private Lives," which is up at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven. This weekend was the last weekend of the run, and guess what? Hubby managed two tickets to the matinee this afternoon, and managed to get my parents in to watch the kids! Wheeee! We had a great time, and though it was fun imagining what AR would have done with the role, the cast and crew really did a splendid job. Yay for hubby!

And now for something completely different . . . not really OT but there's a bit of bathroom humor at the end so I thought I'd better post it here. Decivitatedei posted a link to YouTube Snape videos over at Alan Rickman Daily. My four-year-old (who's autistic and never laughs at ANYTHING) was rolling on the floor in stitches, AGAIN AND AGAIN, over this one:

http://www.youtube.com/w/Snape-Fart?v=WlKLsj4X1vU&search=snape

Someone please, please, please tell me . . . is that really AR? (The voice, I mean, the voice! Not the . . . other thing.) If it is, where was this clipped from? If not, it's a really good impression! (The voice!)

Howdy.  Another Royal Court Theatre thing, if anyone's interested-- this one features Ben Whishaw.  You know, our sicko buddy Grenouille!

50 Rehearsed Readings

Three Months Gone by Donald Howarth
Direction: Richard Wilson
Jerwood Theatre Upstairs
Monday 6 February, 7pm

Cast includes Peter Sullivan, Ben Whishaw, Amanda Drew, Denise Black and Maxwell Hutcheon.

Three Months Gone is the third play in Donald Howarth's trilogy about the character Anna Bowers, played in the original production by Diana Dors. It opened at the Royal Court in January 1970 and had transferred to the West End by March.

'More often than not the characters are considering whether to keep their clothes on, loosen the buttons, take all their clothes off or just the top layer, put some clothes back on if they're not fully dressed, or take someone else's clothes off without their permission...and none of this is at bedtime, before they get up or go to the bathroom, when most people don't think about getting dressed or undressed but just do it? I don't think so'. Donald Howarth.

When I finally got back to my searching for the Bono keynote speech at the National Prayer Breakfast, I found one of our wonderful friends had already done the work for me!  I don't know if she wants me to use her name so THANK YOU...you know who you are!

I won't paste it here since not everyone is a Bono fan nor does everyone want to look at a "sermon" on this page. So I've put it on my angelfire site so I can just post the link.  I encourage everyone that's interested to read it.

I stand with our friend that found this for me........"I hope those in attendance are capable of hearing the message."

Bono's Best Sermon Yet

Also, its good to note that Bono gave out several handfuls of Make Poverty History wristbands to the audience and I've read that the great Sen Hillary Clinton was one of the recipients!

Bono Pushes Passion at Prayer Breakfast

At every table, Bono had distributed white plastic bracelets from The ONE Campaign to fight AIDS and poverty, and Sen. Hillary Clinton was among those who wrapped it around her fingers while she listened.

Dee, yes, it would be amazing and horrifying to watch Play on the big screen. Still, I would love the experience.

Although I must say, I prefer some time to think about the words and ponder the emotions that come across. THe quick monologues make my head spin. But as an exception, I am quite fascinated by the effect. And, admittedly by the uncommon sight of AR covered in ashes, standing in an urn...

Well, well...

I have also seen all your exhibits now. And I do think you can take some credit for the manipulations - not for what other artists painted, but for choosing how to make changes.

I liked the style of your own paintings, too. My favourites are "When you least expect it" (I love the message I see in it, there is something uplifting in the everyday surprises) and "Dancing Until Dawn". Carry on like that!

Chris,  thank you so much!  And ooops! Art Nouveau... sorry, I didn't think of that.  To my defense, I didn't know in what era it was built and where it was.  I only looked at the photos without having looked at any text, so I made a lot of assumptions about where they were taken.  Now I know.  So... yeah, French, of course, and 1909. Again thank you for the photos.  Beautiful, beautiful.  I take it the place is only open in the summer.  Or, is it open at all?  Vegas, baby, Vegas. Chris - Well . . . a few more than 40 years, I'm afraid. Snape in the books is about 25 years younger than Alan. We can buy him as a 35-year-old, but even He-who-must-be-adored would have a problem selling a 17-year-old role! But wouldn't he have made a delicious young Snape when he was young!?

I can't find any reference to casting a young Snape, though I thought I had read it. They need to have that scene with all of the marauders (and maybe Lily) in order to show Snape's humiliation, therefore his anger at Harry for seeing it. Well, maybe not all the marauders, but James (already cast, as you say) is essential and probably Sirius since it helps to explain Snape's hatred of him, and because it's Snape's memory he needs to be there. Remember, Harry knew that if Snape left, he wouldn't be able to stay and watch his father.

Visitor - Well yes, there are several stories mentioning it, it`s a beautiful and very misterious setting and it became a symbol of the old seashore, the part that remained untouched by the wonders of technology and all. It was built in 1909 and I think it`s one of the few monuments built in an art-nouveau style.

Below you`ll find some more pictures if you`re interested. (thse have a mor professional touch) I personally love that location. Then again I love everything old so there you go!

No, I don`t believe we have any buildings built in a Turkish style. We`ve been pretty protective of our religion here since forever so the impact of our southern neighbor`s culture is minimal. Oh and although it`s spelled Cazino, the pronuntiation is very similar to the French one.

Hope I`ve been a good guide so far.

Wow, Chris!  Where are those winder pictures taken?  The building you show (Cazino) is very interesting.  Kind of Byzantine looking?  Turkish cum French?  Cazino is Casino, of course, so, it's getting double interesting here.  Now, one could write a whole story with that building as the center.

You know, I was It`s very possible that they`ll leave the Marauders (except James, of course) out, w haven` heard anyhting baout the casting and I agree it would take a lot of effort to cast 3 more young actors...however! They have already chosen a Young James but we didn`t hear ANYTHING about a young Snape! Maybe they`ll cut him out from his own memory too!  Or maybe they`ll have Alan play that part too! What`s a 40-something years difference betwen frinds?

Play does seem to have a love/hate quality to it. It's odd but fascinating. I could hear all of it, but only if I listened intently every microsecond. Your brain really has to be in gear and even then I felt right at the edge of losing it. Come to think of it, though, it's not so much having your brain in gear because what you have to do is just turn off outside stimuli, watch and listen, and just experience it. No time for thought. Maybe that's why they do it so fast - so you don't have time to overthink it.

Dee: Although I well know that the Famous ARt is the work of masters and He-who-must-be-adored is . . . well, adorable, it took artistry to choose just exactly the right AR pose for each painting and to put them in so seamlessly! AR's face is just perfect for all of those classics. A classic face for classic art. I feel sorry for those painters that they didn't have Alan for a model. . . .

Puddingdale - Yes, they did manage emotion even trapped in the urns with their faces disfigured. Emily mentioned that it's going to be shown at a Beckett festival in April in London. Can you image what it would look (and sound) like on the big screen? I was shaken just after seeing it in a 5" formatt!

I'm wallowing joyfully in the compliments about my new site (I thrive on validation), but one important point to remember -- I can't take credit for those wonderful paintings. ALL I did was stick AR into them...and with such a lovely face, he only made them better!

Dee, you inspired me to download and watch "Play". Thank you for that

Spoilers

Yes, Play was quite nightmarish and the dialogue so fast I was actually glad it rewinded and was shown twice. I still have not understood everything. I think has a  cleverly done and effective  cinematography - yet, at the same time  it is horrible. I loved it, too. And I found it surprising that they managed to add some emotions to the very fast dialogue. AR was quite  good at that - but I would not have expected otherwise. And he spoke most clearly. Yes, Stevenson was barely understandable, though I usually really like her acting.

Guess I must read the script now...

Now, back to your wonderful ARt site. Have not seen everything yet, because of the bandwidth problem. Need to look at your original paintings.

But I loved your manipulations, especially the Hopper.

This subject is really "on topic", but I've posted so much on the GB today I hated to be a pest. Hmmm...that makes it sound like I don't mind "bugging" all of you... *snort* Sorry!

But wOw! Has anyone ever watched the "Beckett on Film - Play" (either in "real life" or downloaded from Claudia)? I read the script when I was in college but forgot all about it until I saw AR's photos from the production (there's a couple on my site). After Emily posted that the film will be shown on the big screen in London in April, I downloaded it to watch.

I've never seen the play on stage -- but the script is huge that I couldn't figure out how it could only be 16 minutes long.

*spoiler*

I knew the lines were suppose to be quick, but wOw! It's a hellish blur of dialog, and they spit out the words like bullets. It's very effective, but hard to understand clearly. AR and the other woman weren't bad, but I couldn't understand Juliet Stevenson's lines at all. Claudia also has the script, so I think I'll re-read it again.

Frankly, I can't say that I "liked" it -- and it doesn't ask you to like it. It beats against your brow until you want to turn away. I didn't like it, but it is wonderful!

Claudia, I haven't post anything about the Perfume contest in Wuppertal here before. As soon as I have contacted the professor in charge and received some (more) info I let you guys know. The contest is called: Wuppertal reads a book and in honour of TT it is Perfume this year. My fellow students and I have some pretty good ideas what kind of little project we could do but we still don't know when our exam will take place. We need to know that first before imerse in any other "projects".

I just recently watched the director's cut of RHPOT too.  Alan gave an awesome performance!!  I wish he could get a great role like that again...but in a film that wasn't messed up by the "star" (ahem....sorry Costner fans...I don't dislike him entirely but I think he is responsible for the poor reputation that this film has).

My favorite lines: "Torture or death?".... *response: Death*....."Torture him!"

Hi girls, I have a few minutes before I have to run and get the gray hairs colored again!!! LOL
Can you believe William Shatner??? I would hate to see him try to get into that little star trek suit he wore back in the 60's...HA HA--some of those st shows are comical when you watch them now. As for Boston Legal Catsplay, it is a terrif cshow and I love it too.
Did anyone hear if the Groundhog saw his shadow or not??? We really cant complain around here as we only had a couple of bad winter weather days so far..
This weekend when Hubby watches the super bowl (football to those not familiar with this event) I'll be watching the Barchester Chronicles again. If no one has seen the Barchester Chronicles, rent it or get it at the Library. Its fantastic and he is at his best!!!
Have a good day everyone-will try to catch up again...

Oh Claudia, James Spader is absolutely priceless in Boston Legal.  But of course you may not like him.  He is just so odd, but so funny at the same time.  And sometimes on serious matter that arises on the show I think he gives very moving performances.  Shatner is a goon, but that is really the part he plays in BL.  He is comically ridiculous.  Give it a try.  I'd be curious to hear your reaction.  Candace Bergen and Betty White are also in it.

William Shatner....OMG he gives me the creeps!  Its a mystery as to why I don't like James Spader.  I've never seen anything he's in so I guess that is a little unfair, isn't it?

Carla, i too think Robin Hood is not one of my favorite movies because i dont fancy KC. But it is one of Alan's best performances. For example, did you know that they asked him three times to be the sherriff and the only way he would is if he could take him and make him his own unique George. Hense the ad-libbing, he ad libbed many of his one liners like "its dull you twit, it will hurt more" and " at least i didnt use a spoon" and when he is talking to Will in the dungeons when he is hanging upside down its all ad-libbed, also when he is talking to the barons. He also took that picture of him spreading Marion's legs apart  with his own and sent them out as Christmas cards.

I watched both the commentary on the new RH and i tell you, Kevin Costner laughs alote at Alan's parts and Morgan Freeman is constantly giggling at the Alan parts.......it slowly has become one of my favorite movies to watch. ( the extended version with all the  cut Alan parts added)

Leanne, that's no rumour. The release date has been known for ages - the question still lingering is whether the premiere takes place in Munich or Berlin - as I highly doubt it that TT will be so sentimental as to have the premiere in his home town Wuppertal.... Nevertheless the city of Wuppertal is carrying out a project, i.e. contest, on Parfume this year (the university is among the participants) and 2 weeks before the official release there is a celebration, announcement of the winner groups etc. I hope I'll have to time to join in (but my forthcoming exam in August and September of course... are more important).

Here are some pics which I believe have not yet been posted here:

Anyway, off to bed.. Have a fun day at the Library Dee. Maybe at one of your friends booksales you may find some cool AR things too..

Has anyone been checking the Wawa websites to see if they have anything to say about Snowcake? I thought the director made a big deal about bringing it back to the town -- or am I dreaming?

I love Robin Hood -- especially the extended version! More AR to drool over. I have the "Official Movie Book", but it has a lot of wrong information. For instance -- remember the scene where the sheriff is talking to the little girl (we was threatening Maid Marianne to marry him)? In the book, it says he talked soothing to her, holding her hand, and then bit her until she screamed. I've often wondered if AR refused to do it.

Do we know if AR is going to be in London for awhile?

Happy Ground Hog Day to everyone! Gee...what do our overseas friends think of THIS weird holiday!

To Everybody,  I watched Robin Hood again too, but I hadnt watched it in a really long time, and I forgot that he died. Oh well. I really thought it was funny though when AR was like "you, my room, 10:30, you 10:45...and bring a friend!" Teehee. I could be the friend.

But one of my favorite characters is Ed, I have to give you that. The painter! Geesh, what a role! Besides "Yes", "ok" and "sure" he barely says anything but he still manages to steal the scenes! And I almost fell on my back with laughter when I saw him take that punch! Not to mention his style! He looked like a mad French artist!  (no offense, I LOVE Frenchmen! Yum!)

I hope we actually get the "band" thing going.  Right now we have five guitarists, although one of them can play saxaphone, which isnt needed much in rock music, which is what we play most. we also have a singer. and we had a guitarist and drummer, but she flaked out on us. oh well.  For some songs you dont even need drums, but they are helpful. I really should revord something by us and post a link. If i can the earliest possible date would maybe be arouned the 13th. Well, hope everybody has a gread day, or night, depending on time zones!
