Dumpy Doris, I agree with Emily Rose - I love the movie Dogma even though the liberally sprinkled 'f'-word is, to me, a total lack of information - like blank spots. Just there for shock effect, but adding nothing to the message. It's actually not anti-religion or even anti-Christian, it just tackles some of the . . . well, dogma of some Christian denominations. Makes you think about it.

I agree that religion is very important to many people and a great comfort, and that is wonderful. And anyone who needs to believe in something absolute which is not to be questioned shouldn't (and wouldn't, I'm sure) watch a movie like Dogma. But for others, it makes some interesting points and Alan is very funny - 'Or you'll do what? Hit me with a . . . fffish?'

*SPOILER ALERT*

I love God at the end when she, after putting everything right again, goes off to smell flowers and do handstands! A joyful diety!

Dumpy Doris - Your comments about Dogma tweaked my curiousity.

Religious humor makes me nervous.
I'm NOT trying to pry -- Dogma isn't everyone's cup of tea -- so please don't feel pressured to respond. I just found your confession (whoa - there's a religious pun!) very interesting and wondered if you'd like to share an explaination. You can email me, or post of the hen network if you'd rather not do it here.

Things have been awfully slow on the AR front since Berlin, haven't they. Sigh...wonder what he did to celebrate his birthday?

Dumpy Doris, I love the movie Dogma but hate the language actually used throughout the film. The humor was good and George Carlin was so funny as well. I am a big fan of George Carlin also (not his colorful language in his past yeatrs) but his comedy in recent years is a lot tamer as he ages. and what he says really hits home!
Did you ever watch the Father Ted series on PBS??? It is so funny and the housekeeper is a riot.  Try that one sometime as it may be more in tune with what you like.  I also love the Fawlty Towers series and am looking forward to the Monty Python Series coming to PBS in April.
Have a good one hope to see you all soon.

The first time I saw "Dogma" I only watched it a few minutes. Religious humor makes me feel nervous. Some people find much needed comfort in their religion. I think they are fortunate.

But, I still can't watch "Dogma",  silly me.

Moro, I had such a good laugh about the reporter's mentioning us "hens" that I thought I should at least tell him that we are NOT a bunch of stupid hens, grin... . After I read about the winner of the Affiliate Theatre, however, I switched my PC off - angry as I was, pfffffffffffff, and so I missed his commentary. NOW I understand Peekabooh's comment on the GB, too, blond moment. I hope I did NOT offend anyone here - esp. Catsplay - to have been so "brazen" to explain the hens. That's my *humour" (as the Renaissance would comment on it) - first act then think (yeah, in spite of my age - sometimes it just came over me).

BTW, who wrote him in the first place about the hens?

Am Rosenmontag bin ich geboren, am Rosenmontag zu Mainz am Rhein - I am singing today while only  watching all the carnival processions in Mainz, Cologne (Köln) and Düsseldorf. Stupid me I decided NOT to attend it in Cologne due to the weather and papers to write  Food Fight

A great day to everybody

thank you for the answer Claudia.

About taking photos , here in Italy is not allowed . We can't take photos anywhere: musem, art gallery, church and many other artistic places, they put a sign on the door with NO CAMERA allowed. Mostly here is to sell you the books with images and photos but as Chris said, some places are also to save the art works from flash. I guess every place has it's own policy about it so we find many differences

For me it's easy to think that everywhere is the same way until I read from others that comparing shows differences

it's cool to learn how different many things can be, thank you all for sharing your experiences

Chris
2/23/06 at 03:43 AM

Comments:

I really don`t want to step on anybody`s toe here, I just want to share my opinion on the museum matter. In most art galleries or museums taking photos is forbidden. Imagine they could lose visitors if pictures would be floating around the web. Other museums are simply concerned about flashes damaging the quality of a picture. It may seem impossible but trust me, they are very concerned about the humidity in the air and things like that. So some art galleries or museums allow you to take pictures but without using flash. And some have already taken care of these possible problems and allow you to take pictures of any kind. Every gallery has its own policy but in most cases, it`s true that it`s forbidden. So let`s not get carried away here, I`m sure everyone just spoke from their own experience.

On the GB Meeressternchen sweetly posted a mobile photo of the ARt nabbed at the nationally gallery. It's a bit distorted and hard to get a good feel of it. Is it "legal" to take photos there? I really want a good clear shot of the entire work for my website, but certainly wouldn't want to get anyone in trouble. If they won't toss the photographer in jail (is that the right word in London?), if someone goes again, would you mind sharing the pix and any write up? Please!

Oh Hikity, that's a holistic or yoga thing, a concept from hinduism, I think. We supposedly have seven chakras or energy centers in our body. They're like energy points or nodes and are related with specific functions/areas.
When one have the chakras clean, unblocked and OK it is said that they're "aligned".

(Something like this, I'm not an expert... and less believer with due respect to those who do.)

It's just a matter of comparing AR photos from Berlinale with those others from Rex? The ones which have to be cleaned from watermarks, prior to the Berlinale event.
Anyhow, on those AR had "bags" under his pretty eyes

I don't bet on surgery, that leaves traces, hints here and there, and he looks great in a very natural way.

I don't think AR has been under the knife either. But I did comment on the Cerebral Hen Network that IMHO he's had something done to his skin. (it's okay, Catsplay - you don't have to hold your tongue!) He was positively glowing in Berlin!

Why do I think that? I have an obsession *cough* I mean 'habit' of pulling up high resolution photos of AR in Photoshop and examining him inch by lovely inch (a tough job, but someone has to do it!). So, I couldn't help comparing the Berlin photos to other shots taken within the last couple of years.

Please do not read if you prefer not to think or AR as a mere mortal or if scrutinizing his appearance makes you uncomfortable.

1) His pores look much smaller; skin tone smoother and more even; a healthy glow. I'm going through a series of micro abrasion treatments and have noticed the same thing with my own skin. IMHO, AR has had some similar treatment.

2) His jaw line and neck looked tighter and smoother. It was obvious that AR had lost weight, but at his age that would not tighten those areas. My dermatologist is touting a treatment he says "the stars" love. It's non-invasive and lifts the skin and muscles by tightening the collagen underneath with radio-frequency. He says the results are astounding. IMHO, AR has had something similar.

And if he has, I think it's great! AR makes his living with that lovely and timeless face, and I'm sure years of film/stage makeup, bright lights, difficult locations and stress is hard on his skin. There's nothing wrong with making your skin as healthy as possible!

Please Don't Kill the Messenger....

I have some disappointing news to report this morning about the possibility of My Name is Rachel Corrie coming to New York.  Claudia and I agreed that I should hold this news until after the AR birthday festivities as to not bring down the mood.

Over the past three weeks, I have been in contact with the New York Theater Workshop.  I had established contact with them via email, and throughout those conversations they had indicated that nothing was 'definite', but that announcment was to be forthcoming this week.  I had also been calling them once per week just as a double check, and each time I called, they said nothing was 'definite', but early last week they gave a strong indication that an 'announcment' was coming late last week, or this week.

Through my conversations with them, it was apparent that they are an extremely small theater.  I had inquired about the best way to obtain tickets for opening night, and they explained that they don't ever sell tickets to opening night, nor do they make them available to their 'members'.  They indicated the theater controlled and distributed opening night tickets (I assume to VIPS, reviewers, or whomever).

NYTW sells their tickets via Telecharge, so I was also checking the Telecharge site on a daily basis.  Yesterday, I was elated to find that a full listing for MNiRC, with preview and play run dates, ticket information, as well as info on post-talk discussions with post-performance discussions after every show, (woot!)  featuring a variety  of artists, journalists, and cultural commentators (details were not provided). I then called New York Theater Workshop to inquire about these post-talk discussions and to discuss the best method for obtaining tickets.

To my surprise, they indicated that they had indefinitely postponed the production, and that the information should not have appeared on Telecharge.  Needless to say it was an awkward conversation and the gentleman on the phone sounded somewhat flabbergasted.   When I tried to press him a bit more, the phone person indicated it would probably be a year or more before the production would be reconsidered.

At that point, I emailed my contact (who is the Artistic Director), seeking a definitive answer and any explanation that could be provided.  His response was,

"We have postponed the production indefinitely.  We were unable to make it happen in the very tight time frame that emerged.  It may be reappearing in London."

I thanked him for the info, and asked if he knew if the play was in dicsussion with any other theaters in NYC, or if things were a lost cause at this point.  His response was as follows,

"I really don’t know.  I think it is unlikely for a NY production in the next few months.  London seems more possible."

Needless to say I was extremely disappointed, as I'm sure many of you are.  Again, maybe some miracle will occur, but I am just reporting to you the information, which seems pretty credible to me at this point.  Realizing the situation, in the midst of things yesterday I did screencap all of the pages from Telecharge, for posterity sake, I guess.  The information was removed from Telecharge yesterday, within a few hours of my initial conversation with them.  You can view them here:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c364/catsplay/mnirc1.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c364/catsplay/mnirc4.jpg

If anyone knows or finds out anything different on this subject, or about another run in London, I am sure that everyone here would be very grateful to hear about it.

The frustrating thing is that it was obviously SO CLOSE (info posted and ready to go on Telecharge, etc).  Timing (OOTP?).  Political?  It's such a shame.

Roger.  Wilco.  Over.

However, please do not spend a lot of time researching unless you feel that you will get great enjoyment out of it or something.  I didn't mean for you to have to do that.

See the thing is, the song I have in mind is so perfect (yeah, behind the glass), but it's about a girl, not a woman, which kind of presents a problem for me.  So I'm not sure how I'm going to approach it.

But it's not going to be Teh Sexeh, I don't think.  More like Teh Sad and Beautiful.

I think the translation of that French article was already posted, CatsPlay.  I'm not totally sure but I don't have time to check it out.

As for Poliakoff, he is, IMO, a brilliant film maker.  BBC-A will be airing Friends and Crocodiles this Saturday and Gideon's Daughter (with the fabulous Bill Nighy!) is supposed to be coming soon.  I believe those are Poliakoff's two newest creations.

I had a chuckle at Frankie being amazed so much their stuff is making its way over here.  LOL

Stephen Fry will take a bit of getting used to but once you see his personality, you might love him.  I was first introduced to him in a little film called Peter's Friends.  The film also has Emma Thompson, Imelda Staunton, Phyllida Law, Hugh Laurie, Ken Branagh, and a host of others.  Rent it if you can--its funny but also a tear jerker.

SF has also done brilliant comedy.  He did some of the Black Adder shows.  He starred in Jeeves and Wooster (another show he did with Hugh Laurie).

Yes i'm joining in the covosation, but i'm not sure  what all this referal to spit and what have you is about ( yes i did read... some posts)

I grow to love alot of alans films, but i get to critical like: his part is to small or he shoudn't have died... well that seems to be the main one but oh well..

Die hard is my fav, it always has been. I like it when its a funny movie, or has elements of hilarity.

In modern history ... yes i'm sad to say school is still in the picture. We are doing the Romonovs  and Rasputin so now i have and excuse to watch alan over and over again and call it studing. And i think Rasputin is one of my favs too, its just so weird and quirky and Ian mcKellin relly looks like the Tsar

Ok SNOW CAKE, i like the sound of that, to me it doesn't sound boreing. But i can't say i'll see it at the movies its not a at - the -movies movie if you know what i mean. BUT I WANT TO SEE IT...

Catsplay, yes the conversation is gross, ha, ha, but not enough to ruin *my* appetite! <p>Also, what's frustrating for me is when a movie does not list AR as being in it, like I wouldn't have known he was in JK if not for fan sites.<p>Yet another list showed AR as being one of "top ten under-appreciated actors", in Parade Magazine. <p>Figure skating, just wanted to add to the artistic/sport discussion. I never fell dancing, but when someone decides to go out on slippery, hard ice at top speed, jump, spin around in the air, and then land backwards of one leg, all without falling, it sound way too atheletic to me. Over the years, I've heard they may include ballet in the Olymics because although it's artistic, it has alot of "hidden" athleticism. Then we all can be happy, dancing or flying over ice!   or just watching!

Dee - That was me. I'm sure he is aware of his affect on his audience . . . that's why he's such a good actor. And normally I can believe he's bad (Hans), so I need to watch CL again.

When I got it, I had borrowed some of AR's movies from the library and was building up my own library. So I was watching a lot of his movies as I bought them. I probably had just watched him in one of his sweeter roles - S&S or TMD - and couldn't get that feeling out. Usually I can watch movies 'innocently', as he so beautifully puts it, but occasionally. . . .

Speaking of guilt - I felt a little guilty feeling attracted to him when he was being so cruel. I don't find cruelty appealing at all in any way, shape, or form, so that was an unusual feeling. I kept thinking 'He's going to see the light. He won't be able to go through with it.' Like when he was going to pull out her toenail. After his semi-breakdown where he finally repeated what she was saying, I was sure he wouldn't be able to do it. But the dirty little devil did it, anyway. At the end I just came away feeling very uncomfortable.

The ending confused me, though. Maybe if I can get the script and read it, I'll be able to understand. It was very strange to me that, after all of that, she just walked out by herself and he went off some other way. Surely, I thought, a prisoner wouldn't be allowed to escort herself to her cell . . . was he just in her mind??? Couldn't be, it seems, since the theme seems to be not only sexual abuse but actual torture.

Chris - maybe someone thought that, in the movie, sweat would create a different feeling. Sweat could be seen as sexier by some than spit. Previous joking aside, I don't generally find either particularly appealing.

Its funny how the script says its spit and the movie clearly shows it is not spit, that its sweat dripping down, you even see it. Go figure, no different than the HP books differing from the movies.

I thought it was sweat that just dripped down to his lip and he blew  the sweat drip off of his lip, i didnt think it was spit.

Ok, on further examination of the movie -- he doesnt spit, it is sweat, it comes down the right side of his nose/face and it drips onto his lips and he blows the sweat bead off his lips.

now off to watch the rest of the movie, damn it. hee hee

Dee, just because AR is in there we don't have to like all the movies he did.

If it was not for AR I would have never watched a few movies of him and still it's heavy to see these ones that are not my genre ( am I a bad fan?)

Dee
2/19/06 at 02:16 PM

Comments:

Please don't get mad at me, but I was shocked when I stopped and counted the number of AR movies that I don't really like except for his character! I feel so guilty... Oh dear..."Bad Dobbie, Bad Dobbie"! But, AR is so good that he creates memorable characters even in mediocre films.

SPOILERS:

I watched the DH commentary a long time ago and was amazed at the amount of hidden symbolism -- BUT! IMHO the symbolism was TOO hidden. When you reach the end of a film, everything should suddenly become clear with a big "ah ha!" moment. But in DH the symbolism was so vague that none of it registered until the director pointed it out step by step.

Sorry - Can't remember now who said they couldn't get past AR's sexiness to see him as a bad guy in ClosetLand? Here's an AR quote that mentions that: "Who I am gets in the way of people looking innocently at the parts I play."  So...he seems to be aware that sometimes he is his own worst distraction.

Jan

Comments:

Chris - My problem with Closet Land was that I couldn't hate him. I did sometimes feel sorry for him. The wonderfulness of himself - He Who Must Be Adoredfor Pete's sake! - prevented me from being able to 'buy' him as an abuser. I'm sure that it was most likely because of the mood I was in or maybe I had just watched S&S or TMD. But, as Alfan said, he was delectable in that film! In Die Hard (I hate that type of movie) I believed that if I was in the same room with Hans for any length of time, I'd probably end up dead, but Hans was controlled, even cold. In CL he's supposed to give you mixed feelings, I'm sure. The only problem is, I had too much difficulty seeing the 'bad' part.

I felt sorry for her, certainly, but couldn't stop drooling at him long enough to really see his character, I guess. I would like to read the script - that would probably get me in the right frame of mind. I promise next time I be sure I haven't watched him in any loveable roles right before, too. And maybe if I ate a lemon while I watched it would help the drool problem. . . .  We need a drooly emotie!

Seriously - I would love to read the script. I have read that it is informative. The parts where they come close to showing actual torture - the clapping on her ears, the toenail, and the machine at the end - were very disturbing, as they were meant to be. However, garlic and apple (tomato? I dunno) began to sound pretty tasty delivered by those lips!!!!! Well - I was serious for a second, there. . . .

Alfan - I'll have to watch the commentary on Dark Harbor now! That sounds very interesting. I was bamboozled through the whole movie (as I usually am - clues escape me completely [i.e. The Sixth Sense]) and felt sorry for poor David, thinking that she would cheat on him eventually. When he turned on her I thought 'Where is this coming from?' She seemed basically pretty nice to me. I felt like I'd gotten a slap in the face (I'm sure that was intended). It was only at the end, when they killed her, that I realized it was all a plot to get rid of her from the beginning. But I still missed clues like the stranger knowing how David likes his coffee! I may find a whole new appreciation for the film. Of course, one of the things I like about Alan is that he does give you a slap in the face every now and again. . .keeps you on your toes. . .and then there's that tushie. . .beautiful! What a brave man!

Judas Kiss did have some funny moments in it. I liked it better the second time I saw it, certainly. I just have to fast-forward past the alien lesbian movie part and her in the meat plant - my arms hurt just looking at that. Yuk! I say. IMHO. . . .

Dark Harbor, Judas Kiss and Closet Land Spoilers.

Chris, Jan and anyone else who didn't like Dark Harbor.

I too did not like this movie the first time i watched it, then being the big commentary nut i am i watched the commentary. I was aghast at what all i missed in the first viewing--the looks, the comments, the hidden messages ( like when David comes down from the bedroom the stranger makes him coffee, puts sugar in without even asking David what he likes, and i totally missed the fact that the stranger when reciting his thoughts to her and she is writing it down that it is her own suicide note). I then watched it again and realized what brilliant acting there is in the movie, ok, its not his best movie by far but he is brilliant in it, so is Norman and Polly.

May i suggest watching the commentary while watching the movie, it might help.

And as for Judas Kiss, i again didn't like the movie the first time then i watched it again and i really really like it now, not just the Alan and Emma parts but i like the humor in it too. Like i love Reuben " i think I'm having an epilepsy"---"what" junior says--" you know, epilepsy-a vision"---"you mean an epiphany" junior says.

It took a bit to take use to but i now think that is one of my favorites to watch.

I also loved Closet Land not only because he is delectable in the movie and he is in every scene but its a good mind bending movie, will or wont he break her. I mean that has one of the most sexiest Alan moments i can think of , when he is leaning over the grill and the sweat drips off of him,,,,,,,,,,,,,yum, and what that man can do with garlic and a tomato. More brilliant acting on his behalf, when he is the other characters, a masterpiece of acting abilities.

Laura, actually it comes out of nowhere to be precise. He basicaly tells her that the years spent together were spent "in a coffin". She somehow seems cold to him now. And suffocating. It`s a pretty weird thing because as a viewer you cannot begin to understand where did it all come from, she seems perfectly nice and caring. And I won`t go further with this because I`ll start REALLY picking on the film! I don`t think I have a transcript around but I`ll look for one.

Jan, you`re picking a fight with me re:Closet Land!  Kidding kidding! Just teasing. Actually me, CatsPlay and a few others were having a chat about it at her LJ. I think reading the script will make it more intersting and belivable, there are many things that were left out (some for good reason, but some were really helpful  in discovering the plot and hidden meanings) and yes, i agree it`s not a pleasant film. But the idea that I found interesting is that you can HATE his character but fel sorry for him at the same time. The way he talks about her as a child (in the script) is quit similar to the way Humbert talks about Lolita in the novel with the same name. It`s fascinating and disgusting at the same time. Just like the film. I think a more experienced director would have done wonders with it.

I`ve heard your press conference didn`t work, so sorry to hear that,. I`d love to help you out but it takes forevr to upload bigger files with my connection. But I`m sure someon hr will help you out!

Come on guys, what do you say, Jan missed the man in action, let`s give her a hand!

Dark Harbor tush..................................................*breathless*

Emily Rose - I love that dance, too! But also when he turns to Margaret Thatcher's portrait and says, 'Did you have problems like this . . . of course you did, you saucy minx!'

Dee - In general, I didn't like Judas Kiss except for AR and ET - I love both of them always alone or together. I did like the twist at the end, though, where the girl finally figures out that she had been set up to take the fall.

Alma - I thought it was headphones at first, too. It must just be a trick of the light and shadow.

Chris - Dark Harbor left me with a bad feeling - because of the scene where David is really being nasty to her in the kitchen and because it became obvious to me that he had married her from the beginning to get her island. A total manipulator! But, then, AR never claimed to choose films according to whether they made people comfortable. . .I remember reading an interview where he said something about that (. . .I defy you to find it uninteresting). I only watched it once but I may again someday just to see what my reactions to it would be the second time. And, then, there's his tushie!

I can't say I like Closet Land, either. It's the only film in which I couldn't buy AR in his role. I'll have to try it again, too, to see if I see it differently.

Judas Kiss SPOILER!

LESBIAN porn scene? I thought that was a guy there! Ups! How oh how will I ever get through this?!

END Judas Kiss SPOILER!

Alba - it`s ok, really, the movie had not-so-good reviews even with him in it so...Personally, I like this kind of quiet, intimate films. But I have to say I wasn`t a Sigourney Weaver fan untill now. It would have probably been a film that I would have rather waited to se on DVD or television. I can hardly see it in a big cinema as it is. But I find the story fascinating and his role really suites him. We`ll just ahve to wait and see but stay calm, no one`s jumping at your throat. I`m not ashamed of the fact that I abssolutely HATED Dark Harbor, for instance. Being a fan doesn`t mean worshipping every movie he`s in.

Leanne- My mind is blown. I've seen that pic a millions times and always thought he was wearing headphones. What a mane he has

Dee- I already knew Judas Kiss had AR and Emma Thompson as Southerners. Now you're saying it has an alien lesbian porn scene? *blam* My mind has been blown again. Now I know I need to see this...

Alba - Honey, if came here expecting a beating then you're on the wrong board! Well...we do break out the whips and chains every once in awhile, but that's merely for recreational purposes. *snort* No one gets upset in here because of a difference of opinion unless you're rude. -- SPOILER -- Believe me, if AR hadn't been in Judas Kiss, I would have kicked the movie out right after the alien lesbian porn scene and smashed it with a golf club! But, I've learned that AR can create a wonderful, indepth character that lingers in my mind even in the midst of a real stinko movie.

Was that rude? *Bowing my apologies to the Judas Kiss fans around the globe*

Hi! Where is everyone tonight? Usually it's so busy in here.
Anyway, I finally got the DVD of Love Actually!! What a great movie and Alan was so wonderful in it, though I really loved Hugh Grant too as the Prime Minister especially when he did that dance! Still laughing thinking about it.
After busily reading posts here and the GB at Claudia's I just wanted people to know that I had an update about Toga the Penguin. (No one has found him yet as far as I know) but his parents are now trying again and have another egg they will hatch probably in February. I sure hope the security is better for the penguin trio this time around. I will also keep my fingers crossed that little Toga will somehow be found and as the other poster said maybe in a collection with other rare birds. We can only hope.
Have a good weekend everyone. I think I'll watch my Love Actually again tomorrow, Cant wait..sigh-I should have pleasant dreams tonight.

Buenas Dias, Alba! No beatings here. There have been several AR films which I would never have seen if he hadn't been in them - Dark Harbor, for one, and I can't say I like that because his character was so obviously (at the end of the film) manipulative - others, as well.

He is a BIG draw for me. If nothing else, I'm always fascinated by his performance of a role.

Oh, heck - I just love to watch the man talk!  The 'droll life' of the mouth.

I've decided to post on this board, because what I'm going to say is just my opinion and not really AR related. I do expect to be beaten with sticks (not too hard, I hope) for this. I'm sure SC is a wonderful film and if it ever makes it to my town, I will be first in line to see it. BUT, if AR were not in the film, I have to say I don't think I would rush out to see it. I think it's one of those films that if I happened to see it, I would like it, or perhaps love it (time will tell), but it wouldn't draw me to the cinema. There's nothing that I've seen about the film so far that really REALLY catches my attention, except for AR.

I'm off to sleep now, so feel free to discuss amongst yourselves (or not) and I'll take the heat tomorrow (c'mon, I can take it) when I'm feeling slightly more rested ;-)

Buenas noches.
