Hey, remember my friend who sat behind Alan at the play and did NOT mollest him even once?? Well she is sending me a copy of that Scotland paper. I am so excited. I adored her anyway. Now I need to figure out something spectacular to send back to her.

Hikity, the system with papers over here is that they are on sale the day of issue. At dawn the next day the unsold ones are collected when the new ones are dropped off and then that's it you can't get hold of them anymore. The Scottish one may have been available at my nearest big town (15 miles away) but sadly I was working so didn't know about it and wouldn't have been able to get there.

Chris never let Alan get between you and a Greek salad!!!

Hikity, indie movie is short for Independent which means it has a smaller budget than the big Hollywood produced movies.

Eeyore has been my favourite character in Winnie the Pooh (the AA Milne book, not the Disney travesty!) since I was a kid and that is a looonggggg time ago.

Pity Alan doesn't really go back to panto, I could just see him and Sir Ian McKellan as the Ugly Sisters

If he does do a play again sometime soon, I can see there are going to be a lot of meet-ups in London

Hello Hikity!

indie = independent movie

panto - a special form of british theater ->
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantomime_%28theatre%29

and Eeyore is Winnie the Poohs little friend the donkey - known as I-Ah in Germany who is constantely sad and melancholic and abit sarcastic too.

Chalebh: I guess I'm an impatient sort! Right now I have a lot of time on my hands to devote to this. Later I won't have any extra time at all. I have found one adult HP fan fic site that I was able to post to right away. I found another I think I will submit to after I get a beta reader to go through my stuff. I am actually a frustrated writer with about 5 different novels started. Someday...I say. I'm going to have to get used to criticism and editing and all that, so best do it now with "fluff" stuff. But I appreciate people's input and suggestions for sites. I'll let you know when my newest chapter is up, which should be soon.

SnoKat: I didn't realize it was so urgent to join a fan fiction group . But I still think you should wait until they accept new members. Because they have a kind of "quality check" so as a reader you'll be certain, that you are not pestered with stories full of spell and grammar faults. That's why I recommend them. Btw: I read the chapters on your blog. I'd like to read more. But I'm not one for extensive comments, sorry.

Hikity: Considering the weather I feel really lucky that I was able to see Snow Cake. It seems that after Wednesday night tonight is the first dry evening.

Hikity, "OC" usually mean "other character" in fan fiction. If you see "OOC", than means "out of character", meaning that the person in the fic is not behaving as he/she would according to canon. Hope that helps!

After reading the book I am Spock by Leonard Nimoy (he played Mr. Spock on Star Trek to those that don't know) I can see similiraties between him and AR. They both seem like down to earth type of people. It also explains the women going crazy over the Spock character  along with the fanzines (opne one was entitled-Spock enslaved!!!) Sounds like something someone would write about Snape!!!  It also went on tyo discuss how the crowds of women were so overwhelming he needed to escape before he got hurt!! Sorry to ramble on and I know this WAY off topic but after watching AR qith his fame and readfing this I couldnt help but share.
Leonard Nimoy also said how he always tries to sign an autograph because of an incident as a child where he waited for hour and the "star" wouldbt sign for anyone-he vowed if he were ever in that situation he would always sign an autograph.
Have a good one ladies-off soon-and again just wanted to share that WAY off topic...

Well, Chalebh, you definitely sound more awake than I did.

Anyway, I totally agree with your explanation of the ending of the film. And by the way, the quiet meaning of the word "dazlious" (dazzlingly beautiful, awesome, freeing, but no big passion) could be a good word to describe the flm as well.

So, if anyone is going to ask me what SC was like in the future, I will just put on my sunglasses and say: Dazlious. *lol*

***SPOILERS***
By the way, did you notice that several sequences from the trailer were left out? The "She's my wife" scene, some dialogue in the car when the daughter describes she thinks Alex is safe because of his accent and demeanour, the finished crazy creature snowmen in the garden...

Doesn't that demand a dazlious DVD with lots of extras and edited scenes???

***END OF SPOILERS***

Still can't wait till November... Because, as Chaleb said, it is a film you can watch several times and always discover something new. And yes, you MUST watch it, guys.

Agreed, the main reason that this film is not going to get many awards is that it is quiet and will not attract as many people as a passionate and intense Rainman... Though I think there should at least be some award for the script... Definitely not at the Oscars. But Cannes maybe?

Chalebh and Puddingdale, glad you had a good time and thanks for the review. All the time I have read people (mainly on IMDb) saying "this should get an Oscar" etc etc I kept thinking that, although I haven't seen it, from the clips I have seen and reviews, it just doesn't sound like an Oscar film no matter how good the performances. Some films should just be savoured for what they are.

Good morning,

I doubt that I’m more awake. It has been a very short night (about 3 hours, lucky those teachers who are on holidays ) . Sorry no photos, I took some but I photographed the proverbial black cat in a tunnel. I tried to lighten them up, but you only get to see red and white and blue dots.

I agree with Puddingdale it is a wonderful and quiet film. One of those you have to watch a second or a third times to realise all the things that are going on. Even if some of you think otherwise, I don’t believe there will be many awards for this film because:

1. It’s a quiet film, it doesn’t put itself in the front.

2. Sigourney Weaver’s acting is brilliant, but she’ll always be compared to Dustin Hoffman, who played a more “intense” autistic person.

3. The whole film is working completely on an emotional level, no big dialogue and no deep passion.

If I remember well, you wanted to know what’s behind that voice over at the end of the film.

It’s the wording of Linda’s story who she explains the word “Dazlious”. About a person kept in captivity who finally managed to escape and who realises at his first sunrise that the world is bigger than expected and more wonderful than he would ever know. ‘And that it is a world worth living in. I think it’s transferred to Alex’ situation, after he leaves Linda he has come to terms with his life and has left his “self-chosen” prison.

Now I’m going to anger you, you really should see the film.

Is anyone here a Harry Potter fan fiction buff???? I'm needing some help. I have some Snape fan fiction I've been trying to get "out there." But I'm having a terrible time finding a good site that isn't mostly slash or that isn't "nothing over PG 13" ruled (mine is adult themed but not hard core). The couple GOOD sites I've seen just aren't letting in new people and my stuff just sitting on a blog site is getting no traffic. Just a quick note before I hit the bed...

I met Chalebh and two of her friends from another forum today (thanks to the latter ones for taking me home - I would have been totally lost without them) - and as you know we watched Snow Cake. All my fears concerning the dubbed version were totally idiotic BECAUSE IT WAS IN ENGLISH *wild tap dance* How lucky we were.

***HARMLESS SPOILERS FOLLOWING***

And yes, I agree with all who have said it before: SC is mainly a beautiful and sweet movie with quite some laughs. No tearjerking, hurray. It is a movie about ordinary things but never ordinary in itself, never boring. And AR has wonderful opportunity to display all the subtle and not so subtle emotions in his expressive face. Just great. I especially loved SW and her "daughter", too. And both their interaction with AR was just priceless.

P.S.: The word was dazlious.

***END OF SPOILERS***

Thanks for meeting me, Chalebh. It would not have been as much fun on my own. And I am really looking forward to reading your opinion on the movie (you will probably be writing it much more awake than I am now).

Well, I guess one's feelings towards the burning of flags has also to do with the country's history. I don't know whether it is allowed to burn the German flag, but I do know that until this year's Football World Championship most people were very weary about decorating houses, gardens, cars or whatever with the flag.

Due to our NS history, I think most Germans aren't sure whether what is innocent patriosm today might not be fatal nationalism tomorrow. During the World Cup, there were many newsaper articles stating how astonishing and unusual it was to see so many flags - flags that demonstrated enthusiasm and fun.

Personally, I don't know the entire lyrics of the national anthem, and I'm convinced that this is true for many Germans. We don't have a pledge, and I'm sure that there would be an outcry in the entire country if one would be established. A pledge definitely is something that would make most Germans very uncomfortable.

Chris

Hikity, knock`em down, girl!

(SPOILER! flag burning issue)

You know, I think the question we should be asking is "what if the country I live in doesn`t treasure the values of my ancestors anymore? What if what they believed in no longer exists?" And I'm NOT talking about the US here, really, I`m not so I don`t wanna look as if I'm pointing to any particular country or society. I`m just asking. And I`m not asking YOU alone. I`m asking that myself  as well.
And there`s another issue here I think everyone should think about. By studying history you come to realise that borders, flags, coins, etc (all the material symbols of a country) tend to 'disolve'. Just take Europe and the EU for example. The society has evolved from empires and kingdoms with their own laws, fighting each other, conquering, expanding or dissapearing from the map, to a 'union'. Laws tend to be the same everywhere you go. Now people fight for their rights, they fight for democracy, even if they fight against the system or administration in their own country. People start to think as citizens and that`s a major step forward. If a system has its faults and people choose to protest in this manner, though it may seem agressive, I personally think that turning them into an 'enemy of the state' is a BIG 'bug' in what they call democracy. And this comes from someone who was born in a comunist country, believe me.
Of course, we can`t deny the existence of a 'missunderstood democracy'. Some people like to listen to heavy metal at 1:30 in the morning and they say "it`s a free country". But we`re not talking about democracy here , we`re talking about common sense.  Burning a flag, though it may make some people uncomfortable and I really agree that it`s not something we should encourage (the step from this to anarchy is a small one) , is not something personal. It doesn`t affect your neighbor`s life directly. You can choose not to be a part of it but I think we should first look at the reasons behind it. If someone does it (and I`m not talking about every nut on the street who wakes up one morning and says "hmm, what shall we do today? I know. Burn the *insert country name here*flag!" ) then CLEARLY something is wrong with the administration`s policy or the way that policy is perceived by the people, which is just as bad.
Ok, now let the record show I`m not 'taking sides'. I`m just thinking about every posibility. I find this an interesting discussion and I would definetly love to hear other points of view.
(end SPOILERS)

Ok, on an AR related note, may I just whine for a sec about TVG? Please? Can I? Ok. Thank you. WHY??????????!!!!!!!!! We`ve  searched for this book high and low (some of us even sent it travelling around Europe for God`s sake!), we got so excited about this film, we even started placing bets on who`ll take the other roles. And for what?! Don`t we have feelings? If you prick us, do we not bleed?if you give us a new AR movie project, do we not squee? if you don`t remove that "attached" and place a "filming" in it`s place, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?

I HATE discussing politics and religion because it always causes arguments but I have to put my 2 cents worth in.

In a nutshell...NO, the flag should not be burned and if anyone does they should be punished.  Family members have fought and died to give us our freedom and to pay respect to them is to respect our flag.  And yes, I am proud that our schools here say the pledge before class everyday.  What sort of American would we be if we don't know our own country's pledge.

That is just my opinion and EVERYONE is entitled to their own.  I am not putting down anyone because of their opinion, I am just stating mine.

Now that is done, I am home for the afternoon getting ready to do some homework.  I think I will pop in an AR movie....but which one..decisions, decisions.  Robin Hood?  Harry Potter? S&S?  Too many to choose from.

Yeah, Hikity, finally something to look forward to in grey November...

About the flag burning andflags in general: I definitely am glad that no pupil here has to pledge allegiance or anything like that. To me it seems a bit creepy and out of place in a building of education. Just my humble opinion.

Still, the burning of a flag may be one freedom we have, but it always looks rather aggressive to me and not something to win peace by. But maybe I am too much of a Ghandi here. I agree that the burning usually makes a statement against the system and not the people in a country. But I doubt that all the people in that country or all the flag burners are aware of that at all times.

Please bear with my ramblings, I am not exactly a political genius...

Just my 2 cents on the flag burning issues. I never LIKE to see it done. It's uncomfortable. However, I feel that what our flag stands for is ultimate freedom, which includes burning said flag if we feel that it is a valid statement to make.

I agree, spending a lot of time and money debating something that would be nearly impossible to prosecute (unless caught in the act/on tape) and doesn't cause harm to anyone is a waste. Flags, books, pictures are THINGS. Not the embodiment of inalienable rights or beliefs in themselves.

ARdent Jan...In June, the House of Representatives approved a constitutional amendment (286-130) that would give Congress power to ban desecration of the flag. If it passes the Senate as well by a 2/3 vote, then it goes to the states for ratification. If 38 states pass it within seven years, then it's done.

A little snarkiness here, but I didn't realize we had such an epidemic of flag burning that it's worth the taxpayers' money and the elected officials' time to spend on this, when they could be passing legislation that actually helps their citizens. Sigh, sometimes I think the politicians care more about the symbol than the ideal.

Ahh, I see. Well, I'm American. So we had Capt Kangaroo and he had Mr. Moose who was a hand puppet. But I'm mostly a Muppet kid. So I guess in the American version of that skit, it would Kermit the Frog as "Dobby."

SnoKat, that is no FOX!!!

That's BASIL BRUSH!!!!

Basil is a British Institution who arrived on the scene back in 1963!

Famous for his maniacal laugh and "Boom BOOM!" at the end of jokes he is all the better because nobody knows who he is!!! I mean people say he's a glove puppet (ridiculous!) but he of course has no known puppeteer so simply can't be!! Like all actors his popularity has waxed and waned over the years but he has had a recent resurgence.

Check him out HERE and click on the photo HERE for his laugh!

Back to the Comic Relief skit. That was a scream! The Maggie Smith person was great. Okay, who was the fox? I'm guessing that is a creature that British people recognize? And Jeremy Irons did a great Alan Rickman being Snape. Now I don't really think Alan is that "snotty", but I could imagine him being that way if he tried! There is even a picture of Alan out there which LOOKS a great deal like Jeremy Irons.

And if you do find Jeremy Irons appealing, go rent "Lolita." He's heartbreaking in it.

"My country, right or wrong" they used to say. Dangerous thinking! Our freedoms are being eroded more and more all of the time and there was recently a bill going through Congress on the flag-burning issue, but I don't know what happened to it. Even the name of "the Patriot Act" scares the out of me!

I`d like to second MrsDoylesCat`s opinion on that flag issue. It`s a good thing you brought it up, Hikity. First, I can`t see a genuine american flag there either and even if we`re talking about a silly imitation, I still can`t judge someone based on an action like that.

And I`m not talking about an 'american' flag. I`m talking about burning a flag in general. (ok, so it`s not like a daily activity but anyway). In my opinion, flags represent the system and NOT the people. They shouldn`t take it as a personal offense, come on , it has nothing to do with YOU as a human being. It has to do with the administration, most of the times, the corruption, indifference, etcetera. Of course the flag is a symbol of the state you live in but it does NOT represent you as a person. It`s not who you are, it doesn`t tell you what to think, how to dress or how you should behave.  Patriotism is often missunderstood and that usually happens when the citizens (of course, I`m speaking in general terms) choose NOT to see the elements that could harm that perfect view they have of the state and the society they live in. I often hear people saying that patriotism means you have to love your country the way it IS. Excuse me? I think not. I think it has to do with loving what your country COULD be and doing everything in your power to help it achieve a higher rank.

Oh and just as a sidenote, it`s in your right to burn whatever flag you want, these days. Our ancestors fought hard for that

Ok, enough rambling on my part. Is it hot or what?! Hikity, mind sharing your terace? I`ll bring the drinks and ice-cream.

@all English native speakers: I need your help. If you're into the vocabulary of building and construction, could you proof-read a questionnaire.

At work I had to translate said questionnaire and an accompanying letter from German into English. And as it is likely that we're going to use it regularly I want it to be checked by a native speaker.

If you're up to the challenge please e-mail me. btw: It's a word document.

Well I see a childish drawing of some stars and stripes maybe supposing to represent the American flag. The stars look more like the Israeli ones but then again if the kids drew it they would be more au fait with the Jewish stae than the American one anyway? So someone has set fire to a piece of paper with some childish drawings. I have never understood the thing about flags anyway. Being British we have never gone into the bigtime flag-waving that Americans appear to do. The thought of getting a British child to put his hand on his heart every morning and swear allegiance fills me with something between horror and amused disbelief.

Everytime somebody posts an article about Rachel Corrie they dig out the same old piece written about"What about the other Rachels? Where are their plays?" Yes, what about the other Rachels? The little Jewish girls blown up, I agree they too need their plays but nobody is stopping these people from writing their plays, they just seem hellbent on stopping one being written about Rachel Corrie.

Hikity: I don't see anything that looks like an American flag in that pic, either. But even if it were, a flag is only a symbol and people use it to represent the bad things about America as well as the good - just as with the Star of Israel in that pic. Human beings are more important IMHO than symbols. Also, I don't think you could expect that someone who took the chances she did . . . in the end giving her life . . . to always appear sweet and delicate. I think you're right about showing all sides.

Morning, dear all

Chris, ARdentJan, Yesterday et all

Yesterday posted a pic with Rachel among children holding a burning material in her hands (I know we saw it before but never in this size - at least I haven't noticed). As I am going to use Alan's and KW's MNiRC in school (maybe already next year, ) I think it's important to show such pics, too, and let the students discuss it. However, IMHO it is NOT the American flag she is burning. It looks like some sort of material with "mocking" drawings of the Jewish star (is this the right expression?). What do YOU think???

Thanks for giving it some thoughts!

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking.  Can you clarify?  I can try to help.

My understanding of it is that Linda 'made up' the word.  I assume it is derived from the word 'dazzle'.  She uses the word by ending that fabulous, long fairy tale that she tells during playing Scrabble with the word DAZLIOUS.

Hope that helps.

It is a 'made up' word, it is not a real word in the English language.  You won't find a definition of it anywhere.  That's why it was so silly when Linda used it in Scrabble.

Sorry--Been out of town!!

Hikity-- Well, she didn't say she saw them reinacting the final scene from Dark Harbor at least! LOL!!! I think it was just..."two guys at a theater, talking theater" Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.... I don't believe she HONESTLY thought Alan was gay! Would I care? Oh sure! And I'd want at least a SHOT of trying to convert him. Snort! But being gay in showbuisness is such a non issue anymore, I don't know why anyone would bother to hide it. Much less have a 30+ yr relationship as a cover it. I'm sure Alan has lots of friends he does stuff with, male and female.

And yes, I totally believe her when she talks about the things she's done. She is just a very believable person and doesn't brag or come up with anything outlandish....like I'D do if I was gonna lie about something!

We tease her terribly about breaking the rock singer's heart. And she says, oh yes, she still kicks herself over it.

Johnny Mathis "an old guy"  Well, I suppose so . . . he's 70 - 10 years older than I am. *sigh* But that beautiful, dreamy voice affects me the same way Alan's does - though it's quite different. Talk about romantic!!! And "Life is a Song Worth Singing"!!!

Thanks, Dee, for the trip down memory lane! And I see on his website he's still touring.

She performs occasionally at a small local club where I live. It certainly brings back memories! Radio stations in NY didn't start to play "Society's Child" until over a year after it was released and had to do backflips with the censors to play the song. Amazing how far we've come! (Although, I don't really know if it's for the better!)

Janis Iain! Dee, that was my song!LOL

Actually I don't think she was  just a one-hit wonder and had quite a lot of later album success.

Snokat -- ROFL!! You crack me up! Sounds like they'd have to drag in the fire hose to get you off teh man!

Nope, I've never seen John Mellencamp. The biggest celebrity I've met in the Hoosier state was Janis Ian (a one-hit wonder with "At 17") and Johnny Mathis (an old guy who is SO cool!).

Carolyn -- Gene Simmons?! OMG...Forgive me, but I think he is the most disgusting man on the face of the planet! <>

On one of the comments pages from the guy that Carolyn mentioned on the main GB who is going to eventually post pictures from the AR Q&A at the drama class... there was this little story

Did I ever mention that two friends and I met Alan Rickman in line for a play in October 2004? The story of how we met him is very funny...

The three of us were in line for Don Juan. A dotty British lady was just in front of us, and AR was in front of her. He was buying his ticket nonchalantly when she suddenly tapped him on the shoulder and said "hello, you're that ACTOR, aren't you? Oh, yes...Alan Rickman!!!" -- he then turned around with a rather flamboyant swish and said "I don't know if I am!" and hurried upstairs. We gave him a knowing, sympathetic look which he seemed to appreciate. I am sure he will be more cordial to like-minded BADA folks.

You know, I could be standing on a street corner in midtown Manhattan for a week and never see anyone! My daughter went to NYU (New York University) in NYC and was always saying how friends of hers saw every celebrity under the sun, and she never saw anyone! Although, (maybe her luck is changing) she saw Gene Simmons from Kiss about a month ago in the lobby of her building.

SnoKat...We all know the "inferences" your friend alluded to have been around forever! It's funny how sometimes they just start and never go away. But realistically, who cares anyway?

Dee~ Don't worry dear, we're obsessed normal.

Hey, ehm... You guys remember that Alan quote? Where he said, 'You can lull the customer as long as they get slapped'

What did he literally mean when he said that?

This friend is so cool too. She actually dated the lead singer of a very famous 80s band. But she said it sucked getting mobed everywhere they went. So she dumped him, broke his heart and he wrote one of the bands biggest hits about her!!!

Yes, me finding Alan is sitting in front of me...."Excuse me, Mr. Rickman..I was just wondering if you could read this Penthouse Forum to me while we wait???"

Seriously!!! I would not be able to keep my hands off him! ...Must.....touch.....ohh, just running my fingers through his hair, BURYING my FACE in it actually!!....down his neck, across his shoulders.........

"And Ms SnoKat was from then on banned from any public theatre performance anywhere and pronounced unfit to be amongst socialized humans."

Snowkat -- I can believe that your friend sees famous people everywhere. Heck, I was only in London eight days and saw Jeremy Irons, Kathleen Turner, Dame Judi Dench, Christian Slater, Alan Rickman, and Madonna! They just...well...walk around in public like...people! (that sounds so naive', but I've never seen anyone famous "walk around" in Indiana!)

That story is fabulous! Can you imagine sitting behind him like that...sigh! Thanks for sharing!

Okay.. Gotta share. I have a friend on another private totally OT site who lives in England. You ever know one of those people who just happen to run into famous people all over the place??? She's one! She even dated one for a while! And yeah...I totally believe her. THIS is what she tells me....and this is what SHE said, so don't get mad about any...aruphm "inference" made.

I sat directly behind Alan Rickman at the theatre one evening, last year.We were watching 'The Reduced Shakespeare Company' and he was in the seat in front of me.

You kill me. I would not be able to sit behind this man and look at anything but the back of his head and someone would have to tie my arms down to keep me from running my fingers through his hair. Did you talk to him? Did you hear him say anything? Was he with that long time girlfriend of his?? I'm into the tiniest detail. I have people at the fans sites that would eat up just a few tid bits of first hand experience.
