(My thinking cap truly needs a repair.)

I'll give another try tomorrow... wait a second, it is "tomorrow" already!

How weird. The votation must be ended by now and it's still there.
For me, in PR, is April 1 at 12:27 am and I think Spain is 5 or 6 hours ahead. Seems they forgot about the whole thing!

Well, later I'll come with more ramblings (if I can think of something else!)

This is a hint! And from someone who knows for sure!

Okay, okay, Jan, let me think...

If you would choose to play the girl in the movie but not to be her within the plot it may means one of two things, or both:
1. Something bad happens to the girl.
2. She is not the kind of person you like. (A baddie?)

CatsPlay: Villa is very, very good - no doubt about that, especially considering it as a possible role for AR, and it's not a long book. It would get my vote.

I love your wallpapers! "Piping Hot" looks like chocolate to me (but, what doesn't?).

I'm glad you receive it, Jan!
The book is still on its way, probably decided to take a look at our beaches before getting into my library. Oh please book, come here! I promise to take you out on my automobile and show you the whole island, you have my word on this!

CatsPlay, your wallpapers are fantastic! All in your LJ is excellent stuff!

Bad Chris, behave!
So... it has nothing to do with my theory but, otherwise, with something better.
OMG!!!!! (My imagination is spinning truly wild now.)
May I play the girl? Where are the castings??I'll do it for free!!

Hikity, I'm going to Borders tomorrow, let's cross the fingers that they have it already!

Hear that, Nahima? Jan can`t wait until you read TVG and tell me every single detail so we can all discuss it then!

Dee - Well not a huge fan but he WAS there before AR was in the picture so I feel I owe him at least my interest . Hey, if I could have gone to London in the first place it would have been for AR, but as I have exams coming up I can`t plan my escape just yet. Also, i`m thinking of moving to the suburbs so I`m not sure how my finances will present themselves this year. When are you leaving for London again, Dee? Be sure to take your camera!

okie dokie, so i was looking at CatsPlay's site a lot lately (it is brilliant, you are doing a great job, CatsPlay. Who else has Alan Rickman sites that I can spend gazing at?haha. Well, anyway I was actually just typing to say that thanks to the In Demand: Smooth Remix on her site, I had another dream about The Man. haha.  I watched it a bunch of times last night before I went to bed, and then I had a dream that I replaced the woman...can't remember her name...grrrr...anyhow, so Alan and I were dancing instead.  And I was in the chatroom the other night talking about what my perfect encounter with Alan would be, and now I have decided this would be it. YAY!  And, if I am ever having a boring class today, I can just dream away!

Chris, exactly! (ref. dangerous places in this lovely world) and yes, I am going - flight ticket and Playhouse package booked and paid

Nahima, I certainly would ask an intelligent question if I have one (esp. concering the play and its use for the classroom), but I would love to read the play beforehand, but amazon informed me about sending it out not before May 2...and I am really annoyed about it. Go on thinking about a good question, sweetie!

Have you seen this impudent ebay seller (I posted it on GB) - I am somewhat speechless - these are the moments when I think about the negative sides of the internet

Comments:

Sorry if that was a spoiler, Mrs. Doyle's Cat! Really sort of a negative spoiler - dispelling some recent nasty rumors concerning the OooA!

Really, though, from some of the references to earlier movies and from the blurb I would never have guessed the true story - at least most of it! Of course, I could be just a little slow (I've been accused of such), and I'm not good at figuring out mysteries, but . . . . Parts of the story really surprised me and it is really very interesting. I think you'll all enjoy it and find at least some surprises when you read it!

Ok - here's a little, tiny tidbit about Villa Golitsyn:

concerning the young girl - the book blurb is a little misleading . . . not exactly a Lolita situation . . . no,  no, not at all, really . . . it's soooo much better than that!

Have fun guessing!!!

Nahima
3/30/06 at 04:09 PM

Comments:
No, no, no! The Lolita thingy is just a product of my dirt imagination.
Jan
has not told me any details from the novel, just her opinion about it.
The only "spoiler", if it can be named like that, she gave me was "it is a little sad" and of course I screamed "he dieesssss, he dieeesssssss".

What other thing might be sadder than that?

"Da Code" is indomitable!
And I won't beg anymore, post this blasted little box or I'll kill you!

Yeah the very same, Lolita!

Forget about the glasses, I wear a pair and still have troubles deciphering the word verification thingy. Its the background, I think, and the up and down style that makes hard to distinguish between capital letters and the small ones.

3/30/06 at 02:21 PM

Comments:

Jeremy Irons?! You`re not thinking about Lolita, are you?! OMG! Now it`s your turn to torment me!

Hey, that was my 6th try with the code! It usually takes up to 4 times. I think I need glasses pronto!

Comments:
Oh Chris, I'm so silly sometimes!
Ask poor Jan, since we began communications about the book exchange there's not a single e-mail I've sent to her that doesn't have screams and sighs included.

Please!! Do not torment me! I never understood the "macro" thing, have enough mess my browsers already.

I guess Willy may get infatuated or obsessioned with the girl, something similar to what happened with Jeremy Irons's character in that other movie I can't recall its name.

Hey, at least you can read your codes! I have to try again every single time, feel like breaking the Da Vinci Code here!

Chris
3/30/06 at 12:32 PM

Comments:

What ,Nahima, are you hinting that he DIES?! Noooo! I would NEVER have thought about that!

Actually the one thing I`m curious about is what kind of relationship does he develop with that girl!

I thought of a third option! "Macros rule my life!"

PS: My word verification says "boluk". Made me think of Sue and Alfan.  Of course, it needs a bit of imagination and expansion but it was enough to make me giggle.

Hello Magazin : The AR`s fandom nemesis? How many browsers can my PC take?

My copy of "The Villa..." is on its way too, thanks to Jan!
I've not read it yet, obviously, but have concluded about Willy's fate (AR's role) by reading between lines from the comments.
It's an unconfirmed guess, probably spoiler, so I better shut up.

PS: Your idea sounds excellent to me! AND as i`m really running out of ideas for my next entry,I could use some help? What topic should we debate next? 10 ways in which you can sabotage Beanie`s fandom? Hello Magazin : The AR`s fandom nemesis? How many browsers can my PC take?

On a different note,my copy of The Villa Golitsyn is on its way; I read that a quite a number of you read it. Appart from the fact that it`s a nice role for the man, any other impressions?

Sevvy, hi nice to hear from you.   I'm still struggling with how things operate on chat. Thanks for telling me where you were. I thought maybe you were busy.   I tried to put something "springy" on the GB, but I didn't do something, thus there's script lettering below my post. Darn-knit.  I didn't put my name in the box 'cause I wasn't ready, but clicked on "post message"  by mistake.

Then Nahima was "throwing tomatoes" at me (gee, wonder why you were doing that Nahima  . Don't worry I'm not the kind that puts posts about medicines, etc. like someone does on Suzanne's AR  GB) didn't you think that was a strange post? just "happy" in green from "Hi"?

I'm starting to feel self-conscious. Is there anyone who thinks about others more than themselves, or am I  the only "selfish piggy" here?!?!?! *muttering* don't answer that.

I like the IMDb site and use to lurk in their forums with some regularity, maybe I could write something here and there but mainly keep just reading.
You must have noticed how "alive" is that specific board. *cough*
The AR one is much better!

Speaking of autographs, actually I got one once!
It was from a beginner -at the time- puerto rican singer but don't get too excited, I did nothing. There were persons all over the place giving free mini posters already signed and I ended with one of them in my hands.

Nahima - Don`t worry about were you post, sweety. It was in the right place, IF such a place exists! I can`t follow a thread myself without gtting completly lost at a certain point myself so please, be my guest! You could write about racoons in a thread about Blalock`s choice of ties and I`d still love to hear all about it!  I love to hear your perspective, you manage to bring reason and humour in each of your comments.

Thank you, I only hope I`ll be able to find the time and energy to write somthing this week, as I kinda slacked off lately.

BTW, I see you launched an appeal on the IMDB`s SnowCake message board re:the Hello Poll. You`re quite a soldier, you!

Oh but unfortunatly I`m with you on this: I`m a chicken when it comes to celebrities also. I may say I don`t actually NEED an autograph or a picture or even their attention (which is partly true) but I think the main rason behind it all is that I`m rathr scard of embarassing myself. And yes, I am rather self-centered.

Yeah, I agree with both of you Hikity and Chris. It's very irresponsible to go to risky places without a real need to do it or for the wrong reasons. If one takes the chance to make something dangerous, one must take account of the consequences without forgetting the other lifes that would be affected by our dumb decisions.

Hikity! Will you dare to ask something at the Q&A thingy? Directly to AR? *the chicken in me admires you greatly and the normal me too*

Yes! She makes a comeback! Step away from the allmighty PC for a few days and look at all the interesting discussions you miss!

Hikity, I agree completely. I hope this doesn`t come out as heartless but you have to take responsability since it was your decision in the first place. If you are not compelled by your line of work and you decide by yourself to visit those countries in these troubled times, then the government shouldn`t take the blame for you. It`s like travelling to Africa or the Amazonian Jungle without vaccinating yourself. Foolishness has its own price.

Anyway, my opinion is that you shouldn`t DEAL with kidnappers or terrorists in the first place.Well, what you let them THINK you`re doing it`s a whole different story. By definition, "true" terrorists don`t negociate under any circumstances. They`ve got their goal to reach and they`re not affraid to, which makes them even more dangerous. As for these low-life kidnappers, personally I think it`s only for the money. Sure, they can invoke some political nonsense but if they`re willing to trade then it`s solely for the greenies, and they will do it again and again until they get caught so paying the ransom will only delay their actions for the momment. In 80% cases they will ask for more.

We had a case several months back with three reporters being kidnapped. There were tapes sent, threats, etc, the whole package. It turned out it wasn`t half as bad and they were able to return safely. The media has uts own part to play also.

But face it, you don`t have to be a genius to reconsider your decision about travelling to The Middle East at the momment.

Nahima, I am with you in this - but Rachel was killed by accident, wasn't she? Her life was not really in danger because she was in Palestine. I would like to have the guts to go there and see myself. I have been hoping for a "solution" since I lived in Sudan and Abu Dhabi, having met lots of Palestinian people.

What I do not understand at all are the reasons of those people who go to Afganistan, Jemen, etc for a kind of holiday,or better for an ego trip, then get kidnapped (or even killed) and our governments have to pay for ransom (correct word??). Let them rot...sorry

We should form your "idea" into a question - let's think about it (still some weeks left to do so, hihi)

Well, Hikity, here in PR is half and half in school matters. I mean, if you go to small towns in the interior of the island you'll find the same as in St. Lucia, neat and respectful students. BUT if you go to a public school in a bigger city you might find a different story.

Anyhow, yes, I love this island!

I want to read "MNiRC" too, have to check if the local Borders has it already.  That one and the "Mapping..." of HP.

For me it would be imperative to read the book before seeing the play, otherwise I'd be lost. My hears are not very accustomed to english, least the british accent.

Well, about the questions thingy, I've been wondering what I would ask myself. Just as an entertaining exercise, probably I won't dare to do it no matter I'd have the chance. *me the chicken*

Anyway, I have this thing on my mind that may sound terrible but, well there it is. I admire Rachel for her bravery and free spirit, she had the guts to live (and to die) in her own terms, loyal to her beliefs.
However, I think her sacrifice too much sad and (forgive me if this hurt anyone's feelings) somehow useless. Surely I'm just a selfish prat but can't avoid to feel that she lost her only life to make a change in a world that is not willing to change.

Still I've not arranged this thoughts into a reasonable question.
But I will like to hear AR talking about the Rachel he perceived, not only about her writing talent but more about the human being.

Wow, Nahima, you are a lucky girl!! I was in St Lucia last May and I thought I could stay there for ever teaching in a school there - the girls and boys all looked so nicely dressed - it was an eye catcher (esp compared to German pupils with their holes in jeans, uncombed hair and very bad behaviour and I don't know what else).

I have to admit that's a longer way for you than for me...if you any good idea about a question please fire away!!! I thought I could read the play beforehand but amazon does not deliver it before 2 May - that annoys me very much.

Wishing CatsPlay a very happy birthday today!  I hope all (well most *grin*) of your AR dreams come true!

I see AR's back in the lead again in the Hello vote.  I'm guilty of being lax this past weekend but I'm back to voting hot and heavy again today.  Only a few more days to go!

Thanks so much for the congratulations! We are happy indeed and small Alan looks soooo tiny!I have already begun to tell him how brilliant Alan Rickman is and it seemd to me that he nodded me!

As for me I vote and ask ALL my friends which even are not Alan Rickman fans to vote...I AM CRAZY ABOUT ALAN!!!!!!!!!!That's why I vote.I am ready even to go to Sean Bean group and tell his fans not to vote,to convince him, that it's not needed.

However,do you remember how Orlando Bloom was close to the first place....And he did not win!!!!!Probably even Sean scores more votes than Alan he will not be on top?I trust, that again they will think that they should mix up the places and they will place Alan on top!

But anyway,Alan needs our help, every time!

I am waiting ALL those who is at least a bit interested in Rima Horton as Alan lover, than plese join my group and feel free to join! Http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Admirersfrom13-30ofALANRICKMANgroup

"My Name is Rachel Corrie" - A Debate Over Why the Play is Not Opening in New York

"My Name is Rachel Corrie" - a play based on the words of the American peace activist crushed to death three years ago by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza - is causing controversy after the New York City theater that was scheduled to run it postponed production. We host a discussion with Katharine Viner, the editor of the play in London and James Nicola and Lynn Moffat, the two top directors of the New York Theatre Workshop. [includes rush transcript]

We turn now to the controversy over the play "My Name is Rachel Corrie," which is based on the words of the late U.S. peace activist.

Three years ago this month Corrie died at the age of 23 after she was crushed by an Israeli military bulldozer. At the time Corrie was attempting to block the demolition of the home of a Palestinian doctor in the Gaza town of Rafah.

The play opened last year in London to rave reviews and sold out audiences. It was scheduled to come to New York and open tonight at the celebrated off-Broadway New York Theatre Workshop.

But there will be no opening night.

In late February, the theater announced it was indefinitely postponing production of the play due to the current political climate.

The theater's artistic director James Nicola told the Guardian of London: "In our pre-production planning and our talking around and listening in our communities in New York, what we heard was that after Ariel Sharon's illness and the election of Hamas, we had a very edgy situation." Nicola went on to say, "We found that our plan to present a work of art would be seen as us taking a stand in a political conflict, that we didn't want to take."

But the theater has been accused of political censorship. The co-creator of the play, Alan Rickman responded by saying, "This is censorship born out of fear" and that the theater had effectively canceled the play.

Today, in a broadcast exclusive, we host a discussion between one of the creators of "My Name is Rachel Corrie" and the New York theater group that postponed the production of the play.

In London we are joined by Katharine Viner, the co-editor and co-producer of "My Name is Rachel Corrie." She is an editor at the Guardian newspaper in London. Here in our New York studio we are joined by James Nicola, the artistic director at the New York Theatre Workshop as well as the theater's managing director Lynn Moffat.

Alfan, I've picked up a few British words and phrases as well.  I never intended on it but when a person watches and listens and adores the Brits like you and I...its bound to happen.  I use the words "sort" and "proper" as my Brit pals do.  I like the word "Ta" for "thank you".  As for swear words, I find using "bollocks" and "bloody" a lot more acceptable than the words I truly want to use!  LOL

For cat lovers all over, SuzyQ sent me the cutest little video.  Have a giggle on this wonderful Friday, yall!

Hello everybody-- I made it safely home to Michigan.  I can't say enough how wonderful my vacation to London was.  There is just so much history there.  We also found the people there to be very friendly and helpful. (apparently we looked lost most of the time!)

On our last day there, we did some shopping, and ended up very near the Playhouse theatre, where MNiRC opens next Tuesday.  We noticed the door was standing open, so we gathered our courage and walked in!  It was very beautiful in there.  We talked to the woman inside, and told her we are big AR fans.  She gave us a souvenir leaflet for MNiRC.  When we left, we gave each other a high-five for our bravery, and then realized that woman was still watching us!

I also snapped a picture of the front of the theatre.  I thought some of you may want to see it:

Hi Yulia, look forward to hearing from you. We are a friendly bunch here, so enjoy yourself.

I have adopted three british words that i never even used or heard of before the darn movie Love Actually but since i saw it 15 times in the theater and about 25 times on DVD, i got to know the words off by heart. I now constantly use "bullocks", "dodgy" and thanks to Ron Weaslsy i now say " wonkie". But i dont just say the words i actually throw in an English accent ( wich i do so well)........ And in a sentence they go so well together. Everyone looks at me as says  "ah, you have been watching Love Actually again, havnt you?"

I heard so many times about this perfect site but I've been so lazy to visit the guestbook, but now I will do my best to post about everything great I can find and to chat with my like minded persons!

I adore searching for new about Alan. The last report where was mentioned Alan is this

"Spike Lee finally has a hit with "Inside Man"(the headline)

Only nothing goes as expected -- either for a bank heist or a bank heist movie. The head robber, Clive Owen's Dalton Russell, is a character at least as old as Alan Rickman's Eurotrash villain in "Die Hard," but this guy is somehow different: Unusually cool and calm, he is fully in control of the situation as he keeps a step or even a step and a half ahead of Frazier at all times. His gang blinds the bank's closed-circuit cameras, then force the hostages to dress in coverall outfits and facial disguises so police cannot tell the difference between hostage and hostage taker.

Not really significant but what is that is!

Yes, MrsDoylesCat, they really do call them 'comfort stations!' On highways, mostly, I think.  Here, we aren't allowed to say 'toilet'  (I think it may be against the law ). One must never admit one has bodily functions! But referring to a 'bath' is perfectly alright - it means you're clean!  Hence, 'bathroom' for a room where you will never take a bath.

That's from an earlier generation but a lot of it sticks. Most people I know, when asking where the toilet is will say 'ladies' room' or 'men's room'. Some of the language restrictions for social correctness here are really ridiculous and often very funny. I don't know who devises some of them, but it isn't 'regular' people!

MrsDoylesCat
3/23/06 at 08:52 AM

Comments:

Dee, don't call them bathrooms unless there is a bath in it!!LOL

"Excuse me, where are  the toilets?" will do or "Where's the loo?"

Public loos are either labelled "Toilet" or "Lavatory" "Ladies" or "Gents". We don't have comfort stations, actually that has to be a joke doesn't it? You really don't call the loo a comfort station do you???

Hope you have a lovely trip.

Chris - Yup! I made my airline reservations and ordered my whatsonstage ticket to MNiRC last night! So, someone better tell me a sly British term for "Take me-I'm yours!" that I can use when I bump into AR at the organic banana store!

Oh, and don't worry about me sharing about my experience. You know me...over dramatic, uncensored and lightening fast fingers on the keyboard! You'll soon be sick of hearing about each cuppa tea and potty break! (wait! what are bathrooms called in the UK?! I'll definately need to know that one!)

Jan~ LOL.

I was at my school's English lab to do some listening for the second semester weekly scores yesterday.. and when i sat there and concentrate to hear what the Speaker's going to say. The recording start and suddenly...

Speaker one: "Alan must leave."
Speaker two: "What did he say?"
Speaker one: "He said that Alan had to leave."

I was astounded! And my teacher repeat the recording to the class for almost 10 times. So i hear Alan's name for at least 20 times!
My classmates keep laughing and keep saying, "Hey Lin! It's Alan on the recording", "Hei! It's brother Alan", "Hoi Lin did you hear that?!" or the most funny one which coming from my friend that likes to tease me, I think she's a bit suprise too because she's half yelling, "EH LIN?! IT'S YOUR GRANPA'S NAME!"
and i was like "Ssssh! Quiet! I can't hear what's the next words," hiding the fact that i was trying so hard not to burst out giggling my bu*t off!

So funny and sweet that i feel like them one by one!   I do not know they would be so merry to just tease me or perhaps they like Alan now because i dragged them to see HP&tGOF twice last year...

Lex, "No chance to get our humour! Where Americans say what they mean Brits usually tend to joke, use sarcasm and other means."

I noticed Brits use understatement, but they use sarcasm? now I'm thinking "are they being honest or are they being sarcastic?"!

To those who asked "What does f--- you mean"?!?!?! oh come on!

On the Roseanne TV show, a character said, "Sexual intercourse you!" to get around the censors and suceeded.

On a radio show they said that Mic Jagger said he would use foul language on a record and the stations would actually play it, "Jumping Jack Flash" it's a gas, gas, gas".

Yes that's right Dee, "Blow me down" or "blow me" is an expression of surprise. However whilst older people may still use it I think you might get a giggle from the younger street wise kids.

Another similar one is "You could have knocked me down with a feather!"

Then there's "Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!!"

Dee
3/22/06 at 06:57 PM

Comments:

Okay, all you "English" speaking friends. I was just told that "Blow me" means something completely different in the UK then it does in America! Is this true?

Quote:

Blow me - When an English colleague of mine exclaimed "Blow Me" in front of a large American audience, he brought the house down. It is simply an exclamation of surprise, short for "Blow me down", meaning something like I am so surprised you could knock me over just by blowing. It is not a request for services to be performed.

Dee - when AR was on Jimmy Kimmel, I think, he said he lived 'across the road' or something from Paddington Station and JK said, if anyone is in London they can drop by. AR said, 'There'll be tea.' So . . . re-watch that clip for inspiration and, who knows? Maybe he'll invite you to tea!

But small-town PA is like you describe Indiana - everyone speaks to everyone whether they know each other or not. Not like parts of Chicaco where I was born and near which I grew up. So much more relaxed here.

I don't know what 'get f***ed' might mean, but by our standards it must be good if it equates to 'have a nice day!'

Dee

Comments:

Since Lex brought up the subject, I want to thank her publically for her emailed comments and suggestions! She is a peach (not sure what that means in the UK, but it's a compliment in Indiana!) and I promise not to tell her to "Have a nice day" again!

*wondering...if saying "have a nice day" means "get f***ed", what does "get f***ed" mean?*

Isn't it amazing how different cultures interpret words and actions? It's no wonder we sometimes get into squabbles on the GB. It's rude in the UK to ask strangers personal questions...but in Indiana you would be considered cold and selfish NOT to ask personal questions. People don't make eye contact when talking in the UK...but in Indiana we are suspicious of people who won't look us in the eye. People in the UK would never stop by someone's home without an invitation...but if a Hoosier says, "Stop in anytime for coffee!" they mean it - and they would be honestly hurt to hear you were in the neighborhood and didn't drop by!

Gee...when I get to London I may get into all sorts of trouble! Quick! Someone tell me what to say if I bump into AR on the street!! *snort*

Hikity and others

I didn't say everyone over here is like that. Times changed even for us
But some are definetely!
Call it old-fashioned but it's all about cultural differences, age, personal opinions, education, etiquette passed on to you by your parents and so forth.

What I said yesterday mainly refers to people meeting for the first time or being total strangers to one another. Which does not mean we're all inpolite and unfriendly br...

Your lecturer will surely  NOT take it as an offense and get your meaning. One or two others could prove to be a bit shocked and wonder about such a comment.
I take "Have a nice day" as "Have a nice day" and nothing else.

But why worry? Try to see it from a different angle. The British English is a mixture of many languages and step by step we even change our social behaviour (at least abit)
Fish and chips? Gone! Curry is the new cuisine

I do believe every word when you say  your friends are very friendly and all that. Why won't they?
But give it room that not every Brit (Some of my friends take even the word "Brit" as a serious offence, believe me!) will act that friendly, chatty and touching/kissing you - it takes a little time sometimes to get to know you and actually truly care, being open etc.

Wanted to say a quick hi. I haven't been lurking or anything this week, as I'm in London! I checked out AR's neighborhood.  Didn't go down his road, though. That would be too much like stalking!!

I saw the Playhouse theatre.  There are posters up for MNiRC in the windows, and another larger one inside the door.  I saw Hammersmith, his favorite bridge, Waterloo.  Having the time of my life.  London is really a great place.  Anyone who lives here is certainly very lucky.

I leave in a couple days for the States.  Hope you are all doing well.  Julie

Lex, thanks for your lecture, . I am going to ask him for sure! I am very much interested in his answering...huhu

And I have to say that I made completely different experiences with English people. My best friend has been living in England for 25 years and she never told me these things. All her friends I met where open-going, hugging and kissing me like the French, funny, joking, talking and laughing loudly...Just last week in Tenerife, the English couple we met - they both liked to touch us, kissed us and hugged us. From the very first day we stood very near together talking, and they were quite loud, haha, maybe you have it from an older "how-to-behave" book?? You see, these are the different angles, RedTango can talk about so eloquently. And I tell you what - I love England and its people to pieces

but I will be aware of what you said and look even deeper into cultural issues next time I'll be there.

Good night everybody, have to get up early tomorrow morning,

Hikity,
Some of us take it as "Go and f.... yourself". Given the chance the lecturer knows you're German he'll forgive you.

No chance to get our humour! Where Americans say what they mean Brits usually tend to joke, use sarcasm and other means. Differnt people, different styles, differnt opionions.

And my 50cents on the latest GB topics:
I wholeheartly agree with Laura and peekaboo. Don't take it too hard on the man!
He was lately not as friendly, chatty etc. as we used to think of him but hey...
Maybe this helps to understand him a little better (and understand my long absence here):
We kinda need our privacy and find it difficult to tackle with people intruding in our private business. Touching someone even by accident will always end in an apology.
We Brits usually like to have a lot of our own personal space.
There's a difference between social and business etiquette

Backslapping and hugging gestures are discouraged as they are not usually appreciated.
Do not use the expression "Have a nice day", as this is not a British phrase and is generally frowned upon. So do not wonder when you're given certain looks!
Emotional displays, whether negative or positive, and especially in public places are generally discouraged.
Wait until you have been given permission before using first names.Generally, the English prefer third-party introductions whenever possible.
Always be punctual in England.  Arriving a few minutes early for safety is acceptable.

To clearify the above:
Privacy is very important to the English. Therefore asking personal questions or intensely staring at another person should be avoided.
Eye contact is seldom kept during British conversations
To signal that something is to be kept confidential or secret, tap your nose.
Personal space is important in England, and one should maintain a wide physical space when conversing.  Furthermore, it is considered inappropriate to touch others in public.
Loud talking and disruptive behavior should be avoided.
Kissing is only when you meet friends, one kiss is generally enough.

I think this should. If you can handle the above well enough: Welcome in the UK!

If you're interested in it : in one of my photobuckets (The ones  you have access) or at least on my website is the picture of Alan's parental home. (Now kinda rebuilt and owned by someone else)  but it gives you an idea about the house he spent his youth in.
Long before he moved to Westbourne Grove (I also have a picture somewhere) and later to other flats and his final home.

Just smile !

Oh thanks Mrs. Slope , I wasn`t being sad. I was just thinking about the possibilities. It isn`t really about getting to see AR or not, it`s mainly about setting a goal for yourself and reaching it. Sooner or later. Don`t get discouraged if it`s later. "Later" is not a lost occasion. This is the first time you`re travelling out of the USA, right? It`ll be an experience to remember and it`s worth fighting for, believe me. Chris, Pat, Mrs. Slope, Hikity and others - Thanks for the encouragement! It sure seems like I've spent the last few years regretting lost opportunities -- and when you're as old as I am, that's a LOT of regrets (of course, a sweet young thing like Chris wouldn't understand...*snort*hug*)

I was originally thinking of going to London in the fall -- they say it's so pretty that time of year and I'd have more time to save money. But, it would be great to have an opportunity to see the man in the flesh...but, that's only 6 weeks away!  So, now that the Q&A has been confirmed, I'm going to sit down with my trusty old calculator this weekend and do some figuring. If the pennies don't add up, I'll just keep saving until the fall.

Okay...those were just brave words. If you don't hear from me after the weekend, you'll know the pennies didn't add up and I'm wallowing in self-pity. One of you will have to come to my house and drag me out from under the bed... You'd better bring chocolate.

Snort!

Hi Dumpy Doris,
I love animals too and have quite a menargie of them. We have ducks, cats, dogs, little turtles (and some wandering from the pond into the yard!!) and our new addition-Sally-the goat!!! I am planning on retiring by the summer and live off the land .Tomorrow I am watching an AR movie to celebrate St. Paddy's day-any suggestions anyone??? Good night all-have to get up early and need to go outside one last time to make sure all the "outside" pets are bedded down for the night

Mrs. Slope,  nice to see a fellow animal person.

Animal Rights Activist, "Oh beautiful, a bouquet of pheasants!"
Hunter, "Oh beautiful, a buffet of pheasants!"
Neighborhood cat, "Oh beautiful!  tonight it's food at the hunter's cabin and lodging at the activist's house!"

Cats! ~

I'm glad AR is an individual, not an "ulimate person" without any human faults.

Imagine if everybody was exactly alike!

Spoiler Alert for those who has not seen Close My Eyes.

Clive Owen --- dont forget guys that he stared in " Close My Eyes" with Alan. He was Alan's (Sinclair's)  brother in law (Richard) and has that unforgivable affair with Alan's own wife( Natalie)--his sister, ewww................he recently stared in Sin City 1 and 2 and that movie Derailed with Jenifer Aniston. He also has a role in the new Pink Panther movie with Steve Martin.

Mrs. Slope, Clive Owen is a wonderful English actor--film and television--and extremely hawt, to use the technical term.  He's great in Gosford Park, Greenfingers, Croupier, Second Sight--well worth voting for for himself as well as to eliminate the regrettable elf.  (I always thought OB was 30 pounds too heavy to play Legolas; Legolas can run on top of snowbanks.  Not to mention OB's not being much of an actor.)

I remember Severina saying that she barely has time to check her emails. I tried emailing her, I also left a comment on her LJ page but she hasn`t answered. I was concerned because she indeed had health problems and she said she has to go into operation at some point. It sounded pretty severe and I still haven`t got anything back, Dee. I was actually thinking about this yesterday but I assumed she may be EXTREMELY busy with her charity work and promotional campaigns or whatever it was that she was doing. I can`t think of another way to reach her.

Claudia and others - Thanks for those photos! For some reason, they seem so...revealing. His face looks very open and vunerable. Or...maybe I'm reading too much into it...  Can't believe I was just at that site to pick up the first photo for my gallery and missed all these other shots!

Speaking of a personal letter from AR......I found this letter from AR to a lady by the name of Emma.  Its was written in 1993 (although AR only wrote month and day) in response to the lady's request for a poem that she could include in a book of poetry that she was then writing.  Unfortunately, Emma never did finish her book but I thought this was quite interesting.

I wish I had kept the image of the letter a fellow sold on eBay several years ago but I can't find it so I'm thinking I didn't save it for some reason.  Grrrrr.....

The poll goes till the end of March, and we need all the hands we can get.  Having SB in first place for over an hour was extremely creepy.  Maybe if we rack up a bigger lead during the day (800-1000 votes instead of 600) they won't wipe us out every night the way they've been doing.

Hahahaaaaaaa! Alan's fearless forces are marching again. Well done, my comrades in arms...er... I mean forefingers (or is anyone clicking with the arm?) *lol*

The Gollum's pal is retreating, yet slowly, and he might strike back any minute. Let the earsplitting battle cries of "my precious" not make you falter, but show them Grabthar's hammer instead. Yay!

My, now I am frightened of myself. I sound like a war-mad tyrant...

What happened with your email, Laura? And I suppose the package hasn`t arrived... Why can`t we VIRTUALLY snd packages?! Then you`d virtually read the script and virtually enjoy the chocolate! By the way, you`ll find a greeting card there also, at the end I tried to write an Italian expression and I`m not so sure it was correct so just in case, I hope I didn`t swear by accident!

Yeah, we should do a chat reunion! Although it`s tough, with the time zones and all.

What is your location? Land of Depression (after a first glance on the Hello site this morning)

Comments:

Mwhahaahaha, Puddingdale, THAT should work. But to make sure Alan's back on #1 - where he belongs - KEEEEPP KLIIICKIIINGGG everybodyyy!! I was so depressed, seeing the Gollumman on #1 this morning

Dee, just my thoughts: I remember having seen several people publishing their MP letters on the internet. One said something like "Thank you for your letter, unfortunately I cannot send you the requested autograph right now because he's filming, we'll get back to you as soon if he has a chance to sign it". And then another one, also from MP, with which she send the person their autograph. Maybe it depends a bit if you only explicitly ask for an autograph, so she'll make sure you'll receive one. Or if you write something of a more personal nature addressed directly to AR. Of course that's just my idea of it, I don't know if there's any truth about it. I myself some years back had a friend who was a singer/actress and I helped her with her fanmail. And we just handled it like that. I sent people the autographed photos where they basically just asked for them. But whenever people had written nice personal letters or sent pictures or photos or whatever she wanted to have them and replyed to them personally.

In my case with the birthday card I didn't at all ask for his autograph, I just wrote a bit and sent something (crazy) along. I thought it would look a bit impudent to send a birthday card/present and at the same time ask for something in reply. So I just thought I'd leave it up to him if he would like to reply (in whatever way). I just put some postage for a potential reply in it and that was it. So actually I'm content with the way it happened. I know he has my stuff and now I'll just let myself get surprised as to whether he just keeps it or if he'll react to it.

Anyway the daily opening of my mailbox has become a completely new adventure since then. Hihi...

Mrs. Slope - Glad you heard from Ms. Parker. I got a similar letter back in December and have been trying to decide what it means that our things were "forwarded" to him. Do you (or anyone here) know? Obviously it's a generic 'thank you' message...but does that mean there's a chance of getting an autograph or response from teh man himself, or is that it? I've been waiting so long -- and the mailman is really sick of seeing me pacing by my mailbox and looking pathetic in my fuzzy bunny slippers and faded robe -- I'm about to give up hope.

For those who have received an autograph: did you get a reply from Ms Parker first and the autograph followed, or did it all come at once? Any opinions?

*thinking seriously about buying a new robe just to impress the mailman*

Speaking of which, has anyone dressed up as Snape for Halloween? I did this year and all the Dumbledore fans shot me nasty looks Should I post pictures? My costume wasn't that great and my sneer kept turning into a grin (or an impromptu can can dance in the science library...)

How weird...

Here in Puerto Rico it's a well known thing. "The International Women's Day" is not a free-of-work day but it is celebrate like many others "unofficial" ones such as "Children's Day", "Secretary's Day", "Teacher's Day" and so on.

Maybe the clue is around the verb I used: "celebrate". I mean by it that it is taking into account, the theme is mentioned during live tv shows or in the news and people do things because of it. For example, when you go to do errands, it is highly probable that somewhere you'll receive congratulations (if you are a woman of course, LOL!).  Also there are activities in some workplaces, public recognitions of special women, things like these...

Does this not happens in USA?

This is the way Woman's Day was explained to me:

New York, 1908.

Some workers of the textile factory Cotton (all women), were on strike because of their bad working conditions, but the owner decided to shut them up after many days of strike.

It was the 8th March. Then, he set fire to factory and all women died.

Since then It's the woman's day. A wordlwide day.

I learned about the incident in history class in school, but I've never heard of the day being commemorated here. Strange, isn't it?

Nope.  It's an actual real-time Hencam!  Not a very good one, but still.  It's a Hencam.  Take a look at the Henblog.  The site gets some press, I think.  Apparently The Guardian ran a feature on it.

Wait a minute.  You're supposed to be writing an executive summary, missy!  get crackin'!

While we're all busy drooling over that beautiful clip of AR's voice (thanks CatsPlay!) I thought I'd fill you all in on something you should do for your own enjoyments.  Those of you with iPods/MP3 players/portable cd players you have try this!  I loaded AR readin his Sonnet onto my iPod and most of the time, I've got the thing playing on shuffle, so I never know what is coming next.  And I am telling you, when that voice comes flooding into my ears, breathing those beautiful words, I melt away!  The other day I was standing at the bus stop and it came on.  I closed my eyes and it felt like Ar was right behind me, whispering that sonnet in my ear!  It is absolutly incredable.  Listening to every intricacy of his voice so close to you like that feels like drowning in chocolate!  I'm telling you, ladies, get a good pair of ear phones and try it now!  Anyway, must get back to work.  Talk to you all soon!

Mrs Slope, CLARO - looking forward to it; e-mail see above.

Hi there, wanna have a good laugh???

My best friend, who lives near London, just gave me a call to tell me about her "adventure call" with the Playhouse. First, all telephone numbers were wrong and she needed a lot of time to find out the right one. Then a man was on the phone and she said, "as you know end of March MNiRC is going to be shown". He said, yes, he had heard that SHE comes over. My friend: "no, SHE is dead, but there is a play, directed by AR." The man: "What has AR to do with that???"Then she started all over again explaining and that she would like to book tickets. He:"Well, then call us in 2 weeks again"....My friend: "but you can already book via internet"....and he: "aha, then call me tomorrow or the day after tomorrow (stating exact hours!!), by then I will be able to pass you through to the right person"

Chris, I missed you, too! the "who's who" was just a little message to people who worry about being revealed when they choose to be anonymous. Besides, it's true! for instance, a friend is letting me post. I may not want her to know something about me, but yearn to tell someone else. (let her guess who I am!)

Way O/T, I have this strange craving for cherry pie. The kind with a lattice top, all golden brown and tasty, made with melt-in-your-mouth butter, (lard's OK, too) and mouth-watering sour cherries that burst with lucious, succulant thick, gooie, sauce...Mmmmmm! might as well add fresh whipped cream, (don't forget to lick the beaters!) served on a delicate, gold-edge china plate decorated with tiny roses, and our best silverware fork...yes, I'm dieting

Now, may be you or others can help me. I couldn't figure out the difference between HP GoF - two discs and GoF-special edition. Uk amazon only states HP GoF (but 20 March as release date). And then there are special edition widescreen (region 1 USA/Canada) versions

have a look: http://froogle.google.de/froogle?q=DVD+Goblet+of+Fire&hl=de&lr=&sa=N&tab=ff&oi=froogler

For comedy relief :

What "Cartman" might say:

"A play where a man runs over a woman with a bulldozer?!?!? aw, that's totally crap! Bleep you guys, I'm going home. Right after I find that bleeper-bleeper and punch him square in the bleeps!"

Hi everyone,
I was just reprimanded by Knowing Nora (Claudia's Solo Flights GB) about the date of Goblet Of Fire being released next week. Apparently it comes out on Tuesday November 7th. I don't go over there too often as it used to cause a lot of problems/hurt feelings and this particular poster KN is trying to stir up some trouble. Maybe Claudia could look into it if she can or contact the other Claudia. Much appreciated. I was just trying to share some news with all the AR fans and don't want any trouble-just some nice AR fun etc..

I've been talking to the Spoilers Forum. It hates me!

Claudia - tell the Dreambook people that we need to join in on the highly intelligent, truly scintillating conversation in progress or we'll burst! I'm sure they'll be sympathetic . . . .

Patience, patience . . .  patience is a virtue . . . !

I apologize for the HP Spoilers Forum problems.  It seems as though Dreambook has added a spam filter and its possible they are still working on the kinks.  I just tried twice to post and although I got the letter image, it never did let my post go through.

I'll put in a help request but Dreambook isn't to quick about helping their freebie customers.  Hopefully, they will get it squared away in the next day or two.

Dumpy Doris - I understand. But I've come to the point where I don't need to know. The truth is, whether I know it or not. How could you recognize it? Many people think they have the truth, but their ideas of it vary so widely, they can't all be right, even though they are all convinced that they are. The more I learn about the variety of people's notions of the truth, the more I think that none of them are likely to be completely right - or completely wrong.

I'm content to let the truth be what it is and simply try to be the best person I can - and the happiest - and just let everything else be. Some day maybe we'll all know the truth, and maybe not. But we have now.

On another subject entirely - is anyone else having trouble posting to the HP Spoilers Forum? When I get to the security page, instead of the window with letters and numbers, I only get that little box with an x in it that is shown when there's a missing picture.

I see that Carla has posted and Claudia says it works for her. I think it hates me! (Shades of Marvin )

Laura you're right. It's just a game, but I cannot stand the thought that Alan could be placed only second, because if anybody deserves the 1st place... it's HIM!

it works now, thank you for the answer.AR is still first but I agree that we have to keep voting. It's just a "game" but having some free time it's nice to put AR at first place as he deserves

Laura, it works just fine for me. Do you have the possibility to choose a different browser? Normally I use Mozilla Firefox but for the voting I also start Explorer. In that case I can vote twice every 15 minutes!

By the way, SB has a very firm fanbase. I don´t think they´ll give up easily, so it´s important to keep voting.

Hi all! and Jan, I think that's what I want, something absolute- like maybe the truth.

Dee, I don't know why religious humor makes me nervous, just doesn't feel right, like the feeling that it is wrong to murder. Just a strong feeling.

Emily Rose, I've seen the TV show "Father Ted", same feeling.

Hello Kitty has been around 30 years!? there's a "Hello Kitty" ring that has diamonds and other stones for her eyes, bow, etc. so if you need to be separated from $3,000. of your money, it's available!

I believe in the God that created kittens, that's for sure!

Thanks for your opinions and good night, y'all.

Hikity - It was originally named:

[savefile]060210183639_berlinale03.wmv

(that's its name on my computer) but is now listed at the top of the ARDLHGB as:

Punkt from Daydreamer 20.4MB

and, after unzipping is now:

Punkt9--Daydreamer.wmv

It's at the very end. There's a picture of Alan from the side and the voiceover is saying, 'Alan Rickman, alias Dr. Snape . . . Harry Potter.' It goes by very quickly and would be easy to miss. Especially if you just happened to be drooling  at the time since its a nice, big, closeup picture of He-Who-Must-be-Adored!

Jan, somewhere not long ago you mentioned soemone referring to the OooA as "Dr. Snape" in a Berlinale Clip. I thought I knew them all but I can't remember any Snape allusions. Do you happen to know which clip it was?? Tks in advance for your support, pfffffffff

Claudia, what would you think of creating a kind of schedule where everybody (only who wants to do it of course) could put in her name and date concerning the attendance of MNiRC? We could then meet there - just an idea may be a stupid one...

Hi everyone!

We are into one of those AR draughts, aren't we?

I liked Dogma, it is a funny movie with a good insight into some serious matters, not only religious ones. It makes you think about them from another perspective and, more important, it makes you laugh!
Since english is not my language, if I manage to recognize any "bad" words they make me laugh harder.

Dee, the mistery has been cleared.
Look at the other GB, he was in Scotland!

Thanks God and all of you for the Berlinale stuff.
I'm still watching and enjoying it.

Have a nice day people!

Laura and Bluebeatbabe, I'm just getting into my email.  I'll respond in just a bit.

I wanted to post a little tid-bit about Bill Nighy that a good friend sent me.  This comes from the San Francisco Chronicle written by Jon Carroll.  The whole article gives praise to actors who aren't huge stars.  Here's the Bill Nighy part:

And while we're cheering, let's add Bill Nighy. He has achieved notice on this side of Atlantic only recently, but my heavens he's fun to watch. His range is amazing -- he plays diplomats ("The Constant Gardener") and bosses (the British miniseries "State of Play") very well. His look is perfect, all arched eyebrows, droll delivery and ramrod spine, but he can play against type wonderfully. In the feloniously overlooked "Love Actually," he played an addled elderly rocker (think: Keith Richard) searching for one more hit, and in "Shaun of the Dead," he played a not-very-bright stepfather whose imminent zombification turned him sentimental, a weepy undead drunk.

Neither of these actors is ever going to be a star. But then, a lot of movie stars are never going to be actors, and actors tend to keep working, while stars retreat to celebrity tennis tournaments

Emily Rose - I  love Father Ted!  It was hysterical when Ted lost the bet and had to kick the bish ... well, you know!

Fawlty Towers is, perhaps, the best television series, ever.  Sheer brilliance!

"Is not rat!  Is Siberian Hamster!"

"Right.  Duck's off."

"I speak English verrrry well.  I learrrned it from a booook."
