(My thinking cap truly needs a repair.)

I'll give another try tomorrow... wait a second, it is "tomorrow" already!

How weird. The votation must be ended by now and it's still there.
For me, in PR, is April 1 at 12:27 am and I think Spain is 5 or 6 hours ahead. Seems they forgot about the whole thing!

Well, later I'll come with more ramblings (if I can think of something else!)

This is a hint! And from someone who knows for sure!

Okay, okay, Jan, let me think...

If you would choose to play the girl in the movie but not to be her within the plot it may means one of two things, or both:
1. Something bad happens to the girl.
2. She is not the kind of person you like. (A baddie?)

CatsPlay: Villa is very, very good - no doubt about that, especially considering it as a possible role for AR, and it's not a long book. It would get my vote.

I love your wallpapers! "Piping Hot" looks like chocolate to me (but, what doesn't?).

I'm glad you receive it, Jan!
The book is still on its way, probably decided to take a look at our beaches before getting into my library. Oh please book, come here! I promise to take you out on my automobile and show you the whole island, you have my word on this!

CatsPlay, your wallpapers are fantastic! All in your LJ is excellent stuff!

Bad Chris, behave!
So... it has nothing to do with my theory but, otherwise, with something better.
OMG!!!!! (My imagination is spinning truly wild now.)
May I play the girl? Where are the castings??I'll do it for free!!

Hikity, I'm going to Borders tomorrow, let's cross the fingers that they have it already!

Hear that, Nahima? Jan can`t wait until you read TVG and tell me every single detail so we can all discuss it then!

Dee - Well not a huge fan but he WAS there before AR was in the picture so I feel I owe him at least my interest . Hey, if I could have gone to London in the first place it would have been for AR, but as I have exams coming up I can`t plan my escape just yet. Also, i`m thinking of moving to the suburbs so I`m not sure how my finances will present themselves this year. When are you leaving for London again, Dee? Be sure to take your camera!

okie dokie, so i was looking at CatsPlay's site a lot lately (it is brilliant, you are doing a great job, CatsPlay. Who else has Alan Rickman sites that I can spend gazing at?haha. Well, anyway I was actually just typing to say that thanks to the In Demand: Smooth Remix on her site, I had another dream about The Man. haha.  I watched it a bunch of times last night before I went to bed, and then I had a dream that I replaced the woman...can't remember her name...grrrr...anyhow, so Alan and I were dancing instead.  And I was in the chatroom the other night talking about what my perfect encounter with Alan would be, and now I have decided this would be it. YAY!  And, if I am ever having a boring class today, I can just dream away!

Chris, exactly! (ref. dangerous places in this lovely world) and yes, I am going - flight ticket and Playhouse package booked and paid

Nahima, I certainly would ask an intelligent question if I have one (esp. concering the play and its use for the classroom), but I would love to read the play beforehand, but amazon informed me about sending it out not before May 2...and I am really annoyed about it. Go on thinking about a good question, sweetie!

Have you seen this impudent ebay seller (I posted it on GB) - I am somewhat speechless - these are the moments when I think about the negative sides of the internet

Comments:

Sorry if that was a spoiler, Mrs. Doyle's Cat! Really sort of a negative spoiler - dispelling some recent nasty rumors concerning the OooA!

Really, though, from some of the references to earlier movies and from the blurb I would never have guessed the true story - at least most of it! Of course, I could be just a little slow (I've been accused of such), and I'm not good at figuring out mysteries, but . . . . Parts of the story really surprised me and it is really very interesting. I think you'll all enjoy it and find at least some surprises when you read it!

Ok - here's a little, tiny tidbit about Villa Golitsyn:

concerning the young girl - the book blurb is a little misleading . . . not exactly a Lolita situation . . . no,  no, not at all, really . . . it's soooo much better than that!

Have fun guessing!!!

Nahima
3/30/06 at 04:09 PM

Comments:
No, no, no! The Lolita thingy is just a product of my dirt imagination.
Jan
has not told me any details from the novel, just her opinion about it.
The only "spoiler", if it can be named like that, she gave me was "it is a little sad" and of course I screamed "he dieesssss, he dieeesssssss".

What other thing might be sadder than that?

"Da Code" is indomitable!
And I won't beg anymore, post this blasted little box or I'll kill you!

Yeah the very same, Lolita!

Forget about the glasses, I wear a pair and still have troubles deciphering the word verification thingy. Its the background, I think, and the up and down style that makes hard to distinguish between capital letters and the small ones.

3/30/06 at 02:21 PM

Comments:

Jeremy Irons?! You`re not thinking about Lolita, are you?! OMG! Now it`s your turn to torment me!

Hey, that was my 6th try with the code! It usually takes up to 4 times. I think I need glasses pronto!

Comments:
Oh Chris, I'm so silly sometimes!
Ask poor Jan, since we began communications about the book exchange there's not a single e-mail I've sent to her that doesn't have screams and sighs included.

Please!! Do not torment me! I never understood the "macro" thing, have enough mess my browsers already.

I guess Willy may get infatuated or obsessioned with the girl, something similar to what happened with Jeremy Irons's character in that other movie I can't recall its name.

Hey, at least you can read your codes! I have to try again every single time, feel like breaking the Da Vinci Code here!

Chris
3/30/06 at 12:32 PM

Comments:

What ,Nahima, are you hinting that he DIES?! Noooo! I would NEVER have thought about that!

Actually the one thing I`m curious about is what kind of relationship does he develop with that girl!

I thought of a third option! "Macros rule my life!"

PS: My word verification says "boluk". Made me think of Sue and Alfan.  Of course, it needs a bit of imagination and expansion but it was enough to make me giggle.

Hello Magazin : The AR`s fandom nemesis? How many browsers can my PC take?

My copy of "The Villa..." is on its way too, thanks to Jan!
I've not read it yet, obviously, but have concluded about Willy's fate (AR's role) by reading between lines from the comments.
It's an unconfirmed guess, probably spoiler, so I better shut up.

PS: Your idea sounds excellent to me! AND as i`m really running out of ideas for my next entry,I could use some help? What topic should we debate next? 10 ways in which you can sabotage Beanie`s fandom? Hello Magazin : The AR`s fandom nemesis? How many browsers can my PC take?

On a different note,my copy of The Villa Golitsyn is on its way; I read that a quite a number of you read it. Appart from the fact that it`s a nice role for the man, any other impressions?

Sevvy, hi nice to hear from you.   I'm still struggling with how things operate on chat. Thanks for telling me where you were. I thought maybe you were busy.   I tried to put something "springy" on the GB, but I didn't do something, thus there's script lettering below my post. Darn-knit.  I didn't put my name in the box 'cause I wasn't ready, but clicked on "post message"  by mistake.

Then Nahima was "throwing tomatoes" at me (gee, wonder why you were doing that Nahima  . Don't worry I'm not the kind that puts posts about medicines, etc. like someone does on Suzanne's AR  GB) didn't you think that was a strange post? just "happy" in green from "Hi"?

I'm starting to feel self-conscious. Is there anyone who thinks about others more than themselves, or am I  the only "selfish piggy" here?!?!?! *muttering* don't answer that.

I like the IMDb site and use to lurk in their forums with some regularity, maybe I could write something here and there but mainly keep just reading.
You must have noticed how "alive" is that specific board. *cough*
The AR one is much better!

Speaking of autographs, actually I got one once!
It was from a beginner -at the time- puerto rican singer but don't get too excited, I did nothing. There were persons all over the place giving free mini posters already signed and I ended with one of them in my hands.

Nahima - Don`t worry about were you post, sweety. It was in the right place, IF such a place exists! I can`t follow a thread myself without gtting completly lost at a certain point myself so please, be my guest! You could write about racoons in a thread about Blalock`s choice of ties and I`d still love to hear all about it!  I love to hear your perspective, you manage to bring reason and humour in each of your comments.

Thank you, I only hope I`ll be able to find the time and energy to write somthing this week, as I kinda slacked off lately.

BTW, I see you launched an appeal on the IMDB`s SnowCake message board re:the Hello Poll. You`re quite a soldier, you!

Oh but unfortunatly I`m with you on this: I`m a chicken when it comes to celebrities also. I may say I don`t actually NEED an autograph or a picture or even their attention (which is partly true) but I think the main rason behind it all is that I`m rathr scard of embarassing myself. And yes, I am rather self-centered.

Yeah, I agree with both of you Hikity and Chris. It's very irresponsible to go to risky places without a real need to do it or for the wrong reasons. If one takes the chance to make something dangerous, one must take account of the consequences without forgetting the other lifes that would be affected by our dumb decisions.

Hikity! Will you dare to ask something at the Q&A thingy? Directly to AR? *the chicken in me admires you greatly and the normal me too*

Yes! She makes a comeback! Step away from the allmighty PC for a few days and look at all the interesting discussions you miss!

Hikity, I agree completely. I hope this doesn`t come out as heartless but you have to take responsability since it was your decision in the first place. If you are not compelled by your line of work and you decide by yourself to visit those countries in these troubled times, then the government shouldn`t take the blame for you. It`s like travelling to Africa or the Amazonian Jungle without vaccinating yourself. Foolishness has its own price.

Anyway, my opinion is that you shouldn`t DEAL with kidnappers or terrorists in the first place.Well, what you let them THINK you`re doing it`s a whole different story. By definition, "true" terrorists don`t negociate under any circumstances. They`ve got their goal to reach and they`re not affraid to, which makes them even more dangerous. As for these low-life kidnappers, personally I think it`s only for the money. Sure, they can invoke some political nonsense but if they`re willing to trade then it`s solely for the greenies, and they will do it again and again until they get caught so paying the ransom will only delay their actions for the momment. In 80% cases they will ask for more.

We had a case several months back with three reporters being kidnapped. There were tapes sent, threats, etc, the whole package. It turned out it wasn`t half as bad and they were able to return safely. The media has uts own part to play also.

But face it, you don`t have to be a genius to reconsider your decision about travelling to The Middle East at the momment.

Nahima, I am with you in this - but Rachel was killed by accident, wasn't she? Her life was not really in danger because she was in Palestine. I would like to have the guts to go there and see myself. I have been hoping for a "solution" since I lived in Sudan and Abu Dhabi, having met lots of Palestinian people.

What I do not understand at all are the reasons of those people who go to Afganistan, Jemen, etc for a kind of holiday,or better for an ego trip, then get kidnapped (or even killed) and our governments have to pay for ransom (correct word??). Let them rot...sorry

We should form your "idea" into a question - let's think about it (still some weeks left to do so, hihi)

Well, Hikity, here in PR is half and half in school matters. I mean, if you go to small towns in the interior of the island you'll find the same as in St. Lucia, neat and respectful students. BUT if you go to a public school in a bigger city you might find a different story.

Anyhow, yes, I love this island!

I want to read "MNiRC" too, have to check if the local Borders has it already.  That one and the "Mapping..." of HP.

For me it would be imperative to read the book before seeing the play, otherwise I'd be lost. My hears are not very accustomed to english, least the british accent.

Well, about the questions thingy, I've been wondering what I would ask myself. Just as an entertaining exercise, probably I won't dare to do it no matter I'd have the chance. *me the chicken*

Anyway, I have this thing on my mind that may sound terrible but, well there it is. I admire Rachel for her bravery and free spirit, she had the guts to live (and to die) in her own terms, loyal to her beliefs.
However, I think her sacrifice too much sad and (forgive me if this hurt anyone's feelings) somehow useless. Surely I'm just a selfish prat but can't avoid to feel that she lost her only life to make a change in a world that is not willing to change.

Still I've not arranged this thoughts into a reasonable question.
But I will like to hear AR talking about the Rachel he perceived, not only about her writing talent but more about the human being.

Wow, Nahima, you are a lucky girl!! I was in St Lucia last May and I thought I could stay there for ever teaching in a school there - the girls and boys all looked so nicely dressed - it was an eye catcher (esp compared to German pupils with their holes in jeans, uncombed hair and very bad behaviour and I don't know what else).

I have to admit that's a longer way for you than for me...if you any good idea about a question please fire away!!! I thought I could read the play beforehand but amazon does not deliver it before 2 May - that annoys me very much.

Wishing CatsPlay a very happy birthday today!  I hope all (well most *grin*) of your AR dreams come true!

I see AR's back in the lead again in the Hello vote.  I'm guilty of being lax this past weekend but I'm back to voting hot and heavy again today.  Only a few more days to go!

Thanks so much for the congratulations! We are happy indeed and small Alan looks soooo tiny!I have already begun to tell him how brilliant Alan Rickman is and it seemd to me that he nodded me!

As for me I vote and ask ALL my friends which even are not Alan Rickman fans to vote...I AM CRAZY ABOUT ALAN!!!!!!!!!!That's why I vote.I am ready even to go to Sean Bean group and tell his fans not to vote,to convince him, that it's not needed.

However,do you remember how Orlando Bloom was close to the first place....And he did not win!!!!!Probably even Sean scores more votes than Alan he will not be on top?I trust, that again they will think that they should mix up the places and they will place Alan on top!

But anyway,Alan needs our help, every time!

I am waiting ALL those who is at least a bit interested in Rima Horton as Alan lover, than plese join my group and feel free to join! Http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Admirersfrom13-30ofALANRICKMANgroup

"My Name is Rachel Corrie" - A Debate Over Why the Play is Not Opening in New York

"My Name is Rachel Corrie" - a play based on the words of the American peace activist crushed to death three years ago by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza - is causing controversy after the New York City theater that was scheduled to run it postponed production. We host a discussion with Katharine Viner, the editor of the play in London and James Nicola and Lynn Moffat, the two top directors of the New York Theatre Workshop. [includes rush transcript]

We turn now to the controversy over the play "My Name is Rachel Corrie," which is based on the words of the late U.S. peace activist.

Three years ago this month Corrie died at the age of 23 after she was crushed by an Israeli military bulldozer. At the time Corrie was attempting to block the demolition of the home of a Palestinian doctor in the Gaza town of Rafah.

The play opened last year in London to rave reviews and sold out audiences. It was scheduled to come to New York and open tonight at the celebrated off-Broadway New York Theatre Workshop.

But there will be no opening night.

In late February, the theater announced it was indefinitely postponing production of the play due to the current political climate.

The theater's artistic director James Nicola told the Guardian of London: "In our pre-production planning and our talking around and listening in our communities in New York, what we heard was that after Ariel Sharon's illness and the election of Hamas, we had a very edgy situation." Nicola went on to say, "We found that our plan to present a work of art would be seen as us taking a stand in a political conflict, that we didn't want to take."

But the theater has been accused of political censorship. The co-creator of the play, Alan Rickman responded by saying, "This is censorship born out of fear" and that the theater had effectively canceled the play.

Today, in a broadcast exclusive, we host a discussion between one of the creators of "My Name is Rachel Corrie" and the New York theater group that postponed the production of the play.

In London we are joined by Katharine Viner, the co-editor and co-producer of "My Name is Rachel Corrie." She is an editor at the Guardian newspaper in London. Here in our New York studio we are joined by James Nicola, the artistic director at the New York Theatre Workshop as well as the theater's managing director Lynn Moffat.

Alfan, I've picked up a few British words and phrases as well.  I never intended on it but when a person watches and listens and adores the Brits like you and I...its bound to happen.  I use the words "sort" and "proper" as my Brit pals do.  I like the word "Ta" for "thank you".  As for swear words, I find using "bollocks" and "bloody" a lot more acceptable than the words I truly want to use!  LOL

For cat lovers all over, SuzyQ sent me the cutest little video.  Have a giggle on this wonderful Friday, yall!

Hello everybody-- I made it safely home to Michigan.  I can't say enough how wonderful my vacation to London was.  There is just so much history there.  We also found the people there to be very friendly and helpful. (apparently we looked lost most of the time!)

On our last day there, we did some shopping, and ended up very near the Playhouse theatre, where MNiRC opens next Tuesday.  We noticed the door was standing open, so we gathered our courage and walked in!  It was very beautiful in there.  We talked to the woman inside, and told her we are big AR fans.  She gave us a souvenir leaflet for MNiRC.  When we left, we gave each other a high-five for our bravery, and then realized that woman was still watching us!

I also snapped a picture of the front of the theatre.  I thought some of you may want to see it:

Hi Yulia, look forward to hearing from you. We are a friendly bunch here, so enjoy yourself.

I have adopted three british words that i never even used or heard of before the darn movie Love Actually but since i saw it 15 times in the theater and about 25 times on DVD, i got to know the words off by heart. I now constantly use "bullocks", "dodgy" and thanks to Ron Weaslsy i now say " wonkie". But i dont just say the words i actually throw in an English accent ( wich i do so well)........ And in a sentence they go so well together. Everyone looks at me as says  "ah, you have been watching Love Actually again, havnt you?"

I heard so many times about this perfect site but I've been so lazy to visit the guestbook, but now I will do my best to post about everything great I can find and to chat with my like minded persons!

I adore searching for new about Alan. The last report where was mentioned Alan is this

"Spike Lee finally has a hit with "Inside Man"(the headline)

Only nothing goes as expected -- either for a bank heist or a bank heist movie. The head robber, Clive Owen's Dalton Russell, is a character at least as old as Alan Rickman's Eurotrash villain in "Die Hard," but this guy is somehow different: Unusually cool and calm, he is fully in control of the situation as he keeps a step or even a step and a half ahead of Frazier at all times. His gang blinds the bank's closed-circuit cameras, then force the hostages to dress in coverall outfits and facial disguises so police cannot tell the difference between hostage and hostage taker.

Not really significant but what is that is!

Yes, MrsDoylesCat, they really do call them 'comfort stations!' On highways, mostly, I think.  Here, we aren't allowed to say 'toilet'  (I think it may be against the law ). One must never admit one has bodily functions! But referring to a 'bath' is perfectly alright - it means you're clean!  Hence, 'bathroom' for a room where you will never take a bath.

That's from an earlier generation but a lot of it sticks. Most people I know, when asking where the toilet is will say 'ladies' room' or 'men's room'. Some of the language restrictions for social correctness here are really ridiculous and often very funny. I don't know who devises some of them, but it isn't 'regular' people!

MrsDoylesCat
3/23/06 at 08:52 AM

Comments:

Dee, don't call them bathrooms unless there is a bath in it!!LOL

"Excuse me, where are  the toilets?" will do or "Where's the loo?"

Public loos are either labelled "Toilet" or "Lavatory" "Ladies" or "Gents". We don't have comfort stations, actually that has to be a joke doesn't it? You really don't call the loo a comfort station do you???

Hope you have a lovely trip.

Chris - Yup! I made my airline reservations and ordered my whatsonstage ticket to MNiRC last night! So, someone better tell me a sly British term for "Take me-I'm yours!" that I can use when I bump into AR at the organic banana store!

Oh, and don't worry about me sharing about my experience. You know me...over dramatic, uncensored and lightening fast fingers on the keyboard! You'll soon be sick of hearing about each cuppa tea and potty break! (wait! what are bathrooms called in the UK?! I'll definately need to know that one!)

Jan~ LOL.

I was at my school's English lab to do some listening for the second semester weekly scores yesterday.. and when i sat there and concentrate to hear what the Speaker's going to say. The recording start and suddenly...

Speaker one: "Alan must leave."
Speaker two: "What did he say?"
Speaker one: "He said that Alan had to leave."

I was astounded! And my teacher repeat the recording to the class for almost 10 times. So i hear Alan's name for at least 20 times!
My classmates keep laughing and keep saying, "Hey Lin! It's Alan on the recording", "Hei! It's brother Alan", "Hoi Lin did you hear that?!" or the most funny one which coming from my friend that likes to tease me, I think she's a bit suprise too because she's half yelling, "EH LIN?! IT'S YOUR GRANPA'S NAME!"
and i was like "Ssssh! Quiet! I can't hear what's the next words," hiding the fact that i was trying so hard not to burst out giggling my bu*t off!

So funny and sweet that i feel like them one by one!   I do not know they would be so merry to just tease me or perhaps they like Alan now because i dragged them to see HP&tGOF twice last year...

Lex, "No chance to get our humour! Where Americans say what they mean Brits usually tend to joke, use sarcasm and other means."

I noticed Brits use understatement, but they use sarcasm? now I'm thinking "are they being honest or are they being sarcastic?"!

To those who asked "What does f--- you mean"?!?!?! oh come on!

On the Roseanne TV show, a character said, "Sexual intercourse you!" to get around the censors and suceeded.

On a radio show they said that Mic Jagger said he would use foul language on a record and the stations would actually play it, "Jumping Jack Flash" it's a gas, gas, gas".

Yes that's right Dee, "Blow me down" or "blow me" is an expression of surprise. However whilst older people may still use it I think you might get a giggle from the younger street wise kids.

Another similar one is "You could have knocked me down with a feather!"

Then there's "Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!!"

Dee
3/22/06 at 06:57 PM

Comments:

Okay, all you "English" speaking friends. I was just told that "Blow me" means something completely different in the UK then it does in America! Is this true?

Quote:

Blow me - When an English colleague of mine exclaimed "Blow Me" in front of a large American audience, he brought the house down. It is simply an exclamation of surprise, short for "Blow me down", meaning something like I am so surprised you could knock me over just by blowing. It is not a request for services to be performed.

Well, I'm sure the next time someone says 'Have a nice day' to me, I'll get a fit of the giggles!  Then I'll say my usual, 'And you, too!' and giggle some more. You've put some humor into my days, Lex!

Dee - when AR was on Jimmy Kimmel, I think, he said he lived 'across the road' or something from Paddington Station and JK said, if anyone is in London they can drop by. AR said, 'There'll be tea.' So . . . re-watch that clip for inspiration and, who knows? Maybe he'll invite you to tea!

But small-town PA is like you describe Indiana - everyone speaks to everyone whether they know each other or not. Not like parts of Chicaco where I was born and near which I grew up. So much more relaxed here.

I don't know what 'get f***ed' might mean, but by our standards it must be good if it equates to 'have a nice day!'

Since Lex brought up the subject, I want to thank her publically for her emailed comments and suggestions! She is a peach (not sure what that means in the UK, but it's a compliment in Indiana!) and I promise not to tell her to "Have a nice day" again!

*wondering...if saying "have a nice day" means "get f***ed", what does "get f***ed" mean?*

Isn't it amazing how different cultures interpret words and actions? It's no wonder we sometimes get into squabbles on the GB. It's rude in the UK to ask strangers personal questions...but in Indiana you would be considered cold and selfish NOT to ask personal questions. People don't make eye contact when talking in the UK...but in Indiana we are suspicious of people who won't look us in the eye. People in the UK would never stop by someone's home without an invitation...but if a Hoosier says, "Stop in anytime for coffee!" they mean it - and they would be honestly hurt to hear you were in the neighborhood and didn't drop by!

Gee...when I get to London I may get into all sorts of trouble! Quick! Someone tell me what to say if I bump into AR on the street!! *snort*

I didn't say everyone over here is like that. Times changed even for us
But some are definetely!
Call it old-fashioned but it's all about cultural differences, age, personal opinions, education, etiquette passed on to you by your parents and so forth.

What I said yesterday mainly refers to people meeting for the first time or being total strangers to one another. Which does not mean we're all inpolite and unfriendly br...

Your lecturer will surely  NOT take it as an offense and get your meaning. One or two others could prove to be a bit shocked and wonder about such a comment.
I take "Have a nice day" as "Have a nice day" and nothing else.

But why worry? Try to see it from a different angle. The British English is a mixture of many languages and step by step we even change our social behaviour (at least abit)
Fish and chips? Gone! Curry is the new cuisine

I do believe every word when you say  your friends are very friendly and all that. Why won't they?
But give it room that not every Brit (Some of my friends take even the word "Brit" as a serious offence, believe me!) will act that friendly, chatty and touching/kissing you - it takes a little time sometimes to get to know you and actually truly care, being open etc.
