Dumpy, this is the final time time I am ever going to reply to anything you have to say to me but I can assure you that you have no more idea of my levels of "happiness" than I do about yours.

I think you will just have to accept that different races and nationalities have different levels of humour and I can only surmise that you perhaps don't appreciate the British habit of "irony" (oh and I can't resist the old Blackadder joke about Americans thinking "Irony is something you use to flatteny the clotheys with!" See! I just can't stop myself!)

I don't recall ever saying anything personal to you (although I'm sure you will have something on file!) other than advising you to stop posting on sites that upset you, (which just seemed common sense to me) and then being rather tired of you bringing your complaints onto Claudia's about stuff that had nothing to do with her board.

I shan't be entering into any further dialogue on this matter and wish you a Happier New Year.

Hi everyone!  Sorry for being AWOL the last couple of weeks but this lousy crud has had a hold of me and today is the first time I've felt like coming online. 

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.  Considering myself and almost the whole family has been sick, our's was good. 

I owe lots of email and phone calls and will get to those as fast as I can.  AFNH called me Christmas day and it was wonderful to hear from her. 

I hope everyone is geared up for a joyous New Year!  Gawwwd, it seems like it was New Year's 2006 yesterday.  The time is flying by.

TV Alert....I just accidentally stumbled upon a screening of Becketts "Play"with AR, JS, and KST, on Book tv, here in Canada.I barely managed to tape it, but for those of you who subscribe to Book tv, it is supposed to air again this evening at 10:30.

According to IMDB Snow Cake is supposed to be out on limited release here in the USA.  I haven't found any other source that confirms this.  It's definitely not here in TX.  Does anyone else have info?

Merry Christmas to All from Virginia Beach, VA.  I'm pretty tired this AM, since I sang in the choir for Midnight Mass last night and didn't get to bed until 2:00AM! I had to get up at 6:00AM this morning to put a turkey the size of a schnauzer in the oven!

It was all good however, as three out of four grown children were able to be there! Happy New Year to all!

My dear Chris, Father Christmas must have been joking cz asbestos is forbidden in Europe, . He therefore wore a black polo-neck jumper and very tight black trousers (which is his usual outfit UNDER his enormous red coat, btw) when he entered our house. He has known our family for so long that he is no longer afraid of our tradition...

 It is Rudolph, who has had a really hard time this year. Tanja had a nice chat with him and he confided to her that he feels utterly ridiculous with pulling a sledge with cartwheels instead of vats - poor reindeer, indeed Far and wide NO SNOW in sight

For those of us living in the US, tonight on the "Jay Leno Show", Dustin Hoffman will be a guest, speaking about "Perfume". If anyone can't watch it and wants to, a video clip will be online tomorrow at nbc.com

For anyone living in the LA area, on Dec. 27 also, Perfume will be showing at the Arclight Cinema in Los Angeles on Sunset Blvd. Tix are not on sale yet,tho.

I don't think so. He was in London on Dec.5 for the showing of Perfume there (the pix w/Tim Burton & Jane Horrocks). The latest pix that were on the board here were from the charity showing of SC in Toronto on Nov.28.

BTW (& I posted this at your board also):

"Perfume" will be premiering at the Angelika Film Center, 18 W. Houston St. NY  212-995-2570 on Dec.27. They don't have any info in their computers yet. The info will be updated either Sunday or Monday.

Also, for any Rickmaniacs living in Houston, Dallas or Plano:

"Perfume" will be showing in those cities on Jan.5,2007 at the Angelika Film Centers in each city.

According to Martin Bragg, the artistic producer of Canstage, MNIRC WILL NOT be coming to Toronto under his tutelage. Officially, he states the reason as being when he finally saw the play in NYC (after reading Rachel's diary and being so moved by it), he thought it "sucked".

Unofficially, the same criteria that almost prevented it from being shown in NY is supposed to have played a major part in Bragg's cancellation.

That post she made about him 'being back' was kind of obscure.  Diggiing around her LJ, it appears that she works in theater, in some capacity, on the show Spring Awakening.  So, I assume her post to mean that Alan went to see the show 'again' last night.  When she says the 'kids' only have reference to him as Snape, I wonder what kids she is referring to?  Perhaps she is an older person and she's referring to the actors in the play as 'kids'?

In any case, the case is building that the man is back in NYC.  Wonder why??  *prays profusely for play negotiations*

Süskind was born in 1949 - he has never ever experienced anything what happened before his time , but Tiger states: there is a real-lief version of this character, who had to have infected Süskind - wow, that's a proposition you shouldn't do within a discourse community (you rather use said hedges).

Ladies, this is OT but with the flu and cold season upon us, can I recommend/remind you about Echinacea?  It's a herbal remedy you take as soon as you feel the bug coming on.

Last Thursday I went to bed early feeling very poorly, but had a heavy weekend to get through.  I took Echinacea (the syrup works best for me) and the next morning felt fine.  Had a mammoth shopping spree, a party on Saturday and hosted a family lunch on Sunday.  It really works.

Damn, if only I'd known about the Rickman article.   I work in a huge newspaper retailer in Britain and (despite what they tell you) many of the warehouse suppliers don't pick up the weekly newspaper returns from shops (i.e the papers that aren't sold) until Monday morning.   That means there'd be some Times newspapers laying around in store rooms of newsagents all over the country - and for definite in my shop :[   I could've taken one as late as yesterday.

Sob.  Next time I'm in work will be Thursday and they'll definitely have been picked up by then.

I think it is a sensitive topic and that we should be cautious, if even discussing it at all.  First of all, the information originated from a personal blog, not a documentable source.  Secondly, there were no mention of threats to AR, yet speculations regarding the possibility have already arisen with a few posts.

I think this *is* how rumors get started, and my thinking is that it's not something we should discuss. 

We should be discreet regarding anything that involves the safety of AR or anyone else.

JMHO.

In this case I'm sure that chances are slim that by discussing this topic we would start a rumour. If people threatened MD who portrayed RC, how difficult is it to imagine that the same people threatened AR (and KV) for creating and directing the play?

Well it's a pretty safe bet that if Megan Dodds was receiving death threats, that AR received a few as well.  What's wrong with people who do that???   I suppose it makes them feel important.  I'm sure the majority of them are just cowardly weirdos but you can't take any chances just in case you stumble across that one sick-o who is willing to follow through on their threats.  Is it any wonder that AR is reluctant to talk to the press unless he is promoting a film?

The strange thing is, the following night I dreamt I met Emma Thompson in a field.  What is going on?

Reportedly, Sascha Baron Cohen has been told he will not be allowed to sing his songs in Sweeney Todd due to the fact that supposedly his voice is too low for the songs; or perhaps? he can't sing! (The songs his character has are pretty difficult, even for trained singers). Tim Burton has told him to "RAP" his songs, ala Jim Broadbent in "Moulin Rouge".

I've mailed MK2 films, the distributor of Snow cake in France, and the man said to me that Sigourney Weaver will be in Paris on January 16-17th, so maybe that there will be a premiere. He also gave me the address of the press attaché for the movie, so I've mailed her. I hope she'll tell me if Alan will be there but I doubt of that.

Hi katherine and welcome to our great group.  We all are a very caring and sharing bunch of AR fans and we also have a great time here.  I hope you will stay with us for a long time.  Unfortunately, I think your best bet in getting some of AR's films is to buy the DVDs or if you have a library system that carries videos--you might be able to get them for free.  They are widely available online.  If you need help in finding them, don't hesitate to email me.  Of course, I have not been real good with email lately but if I don't answer right away, don't give up on me because I will answer eventually.

i'm a bit new here. i just joined and signed this guess book properly. i'm a new alan rickman fan. but it is so very unfortunate of me not to be able to see his films because our country recieves less distribution of both dependent and independent films from europe. i don't know why and it burdens me alot because i could only see the trailers on the net. hhhmmm...so sad..not even the distribution of cd's and dvd's.hhhmmm...can anybody help me where i could download such alan rickman's movies please???and one thing more, does anybody have a copy of the transcript of the play tango at the end of the winter???good day everyone

Yes, by 'higher resolution', I meant that (thanks to the fabulous EMILIA!) this version is copied from VHS tape so it is 720x480 pixels.  The video that was available online, that most everyone has seen, was 240x180 pixels.

I believe the new version, if saved to a DVD, would be watchable on an television, with the quality of a VHS tape recording.

But speaking of Alan being LARGER and CLEARER....I've just returned from the screening of Snowcake at UCLA.  (Many, many thanks to Nahima for alerting me to this.)      All the stars seemed to be in alignment for me on this one.  Incredibly there was no traffic, so I made it there in record time.  My niece, who is a student there, called me on my mobile and offered to lend me her parking pass, so I didn't have to pay for parking.  I walked into the lobby of the theater and they were serving sandwiches, cookies, and water or coffee.  (In my haste to leave early to beat the traffic, I hadn't eaten anything.)  So, let's add this all up:  1.  Stress free travel.  2.  Free parking.  3.  A free meal.  4.  And ALAN in full size, technicolor loveliness!!  Could you ask for a better evening?

I have to say that I enjoyed Snowcake immensely.  After reading mixed reviews I was preparing myself for a possible disappointment.  I was very pleasantly surprised.  So many of the critical reviews lambasted Sigourney's performance.  But I felt there were many behaviors that she hit perfectly (I have a 17 year old son with autism).  Most especially the self-stim behavior (be it jumping on the trampoline, eating snow, dancing, looking at lights) that escalate into uncontrollable giggling fits.  She NAILED it.  Since autistic behaviors can be as different as each individual it's very difficult to portray...and I'm not saying that the portrayal was perfect, but she obviously did her homework and for that she has my utmost respect. 

As for Alan he was, as usual, DELICIOUS....and very funny.  This was a refreshingly different type of role for him.  I'm so glad I got to see this film.  If you get the chance, don't miss it.

IMHO, "Saving Private Ryan" was definitely more worthy of a best pic award. I'm not saying that "SIL" wasn't a good film, but overall, I don't think it deserved to win (and, again, IMO, wouldn't have won if H.W. hadn't pulled out all the stops towards the end). I know: "All's fair in movies & politics", but I think it degrades the whole process. I worked in the entertainment business long enough that nothing anyone says or does surprises me. However, let's just say that there are many people in that business (and obviously it's not a surprise) who have questionable methods of attaining goals.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean, Ellen! However, (silly me!) I thought that Harvey just might be his usual obnoxious self and throw the weight of the studio for the film (ala the debacle of "Shakespeare in Love"!). As far as things stand now, "Perfume" is supposed to be a limited release 12/27 and a general release Jan.5 or 7'07 (in the US). "Snow Cake" is still supposed to be released this month as well.

IMHO, I just think it's absurd that Leo was nominated against himself in the best actor category!

In another case of "Alan gets screwed again" (LOL...I don't mean that literally!), the Critics Choice nominations were announced today, and of course neither movie is on the list! However, TPTB have deemed Leonardo DiCaprio's performances (note "plural" as in "more than one") in "Blood Diamond" and "The Departed" both worthy of nominations! Now, I do realize that he is an extremely good actor, and his performance in "The Departed" (which was an incredible movie) is really, really good, but please, two best actor noms?

And to ignore Alan in "Snow Cake"? I am most definitely aware that he really didn't have a shot at any awards noms, but, I was hoping against hope!

Oh CatsPlay!  I think I know his face better than Rima does now!

Just as an FYI....The Golden Globe nominations are due out on Dec.14, and inexplicably, from what I've been reading, there's no mention (so far) anywhere of "SnowCake" or "Perfume".

Just watched the video again, and as to that 'I thought those days were over' comment, it's sweetly naive of him to think that, isn't it?  Just makes us want to hug him more.

I was surprised how much gesturing he did with his left hand.  I'm assuming his professionalism kicked in and he realised his right hand would be in the way of the camera, but still it's quite difficult to gesture so much with the left hand if you're a right handed person.

I watched that interview at least 5 times last night and I still can't get over his thinking "those days were over"!  My gawd, doesn't he know how sexy and in his prime he is??? 

As for the gd word.  It is a common expression here in the states too.  In fact, I have to chastize my two grown kids and son-in-law for saying it quite often.  I have a potty mouth  myself at times but I just can't help but cringe when I hear that ONE expression.  I feel I'm far from being a prude and although I am religious, I've never felt I've taken it to extremes.  Its not as if I've never heard AR say it before because he has used it in past roles.  But I don't ever recall hearing him say it on his own. 

Nevertheless, I do not think any less of Our Man and don't think I ever will. 

Although I love knowing he's in my time zone when he's in NY....I am quite tickled that he's back in jolly ole England at the moment.  Goodness knows....I would love to be in jolly old England myself right now!

Forgive me you all but Camarata asked. So i will tell her. Camarata, Alan said god-damn in the interview. To some its a curse word to others like myself i try  but do say it occasionally usually when im pissed right off. But to me it sounded more like an expression, im sure he never meant it as a curse.He called Richard Curtis a "bastard" in the interview he did for Love Actually. When asked about the director of Love Actually , Alan said something along the lines " its his first movie, the bastard".Im sure there was no disrespect then and not now either. I too am a potty mouth but i also know when not to let it slip.

It's funny, just another example of the differences across the pond. Unless they were very religious I doubt if many Brits would consider  G*****n a swear word over here anyway. Not the only time he has been known to do so........remember when he talked about it being Richard Curtis's first movie, he swore in that one too.........me thinks he wouldnt have a problem answering the " whats your favorite swear word" question they ask on The Actors Studio if he were on it.

I've just got home from work and of course I went straight to see if the vcr had recorded the AR "interview"on the Movie Network.And it did!!!!It showed a few clips from SC and a few clips of AR and SW talking about the film.Not nearly as long ,or as concentrated on AR as last weeks interview, but AR did ,as usual, manage to say something enlightening;

     "I was completely charmed by the quality of the writing and the strangeness of the subject matter and all of that,but umm,no,it's very exciting to realize that there is going to be big challenges in almost every scene,and,that it's funny."

      As there were only head shots of AR, the only clothing I could see was a tweed type jacket with a black T-shirt underneath.

According to The Times, Alan attended a memorial service for Kenneth Griffiths on December 4th ain London. Details HERE.

I must admit I hadn't heard that Kenneth Griffith had died. A wonderful character actor and historian too.

Alan Rickman will play Judge Turpin in the cast of the film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd, the actor’s representation has confirmed.

Tim Burton will direct the film, which stars Johnny Depp as Sweeney and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett. Sacha Baron Cohen plays the supporting role of Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

Rickman directed the current Off-Broadway play Rachel Corrie and co-edited the work from the writings of the title character, a 23-year-old American protester who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer. He has received Tony nominations for each of his two Broadway roles — Private Lives in 2002 and Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 1987. His many UK credits include Antony and Cleopatra, Private Lives, Tango at the End of Winter and Hamlet .

Rickman is perhaps best known for his film roles, such as Severus Snape in the “Harry Potter” film series, and the villain Hans Gruber in “Die Hard.” Other well-known film roles are “Galaxy Quest,” “Love Actually,” “Dogma,” “Sense and Sensibility,” “Michael Collins,” “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” and “Truly Madly Deeply.” He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for appearing in the miniseries “Rasputin” and was nominated for an Emmy for the television movie “Something the Lord Made.”

John Logan ("The Aviator," "Gladiator") penned the screenplay for the "Sweeney Todd" film. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will partner with Richard Zanuck and John Logan to produce the co-production with Warner Bros. Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically and Warner Bros. internationally.

Subsequent revivals have starred Beth Fowler and Bob Gunton (1989 on Broadway), George Hearn and Patti LuPone (2001 concert), Brian Stokes Mitchell and Christine Baranski (2002 - Kennedy Center) and the recent revival with Michael Cerveris and LuPone.

I forgot to mention the card contest yesterday.  Since its so late, how about if we have an AR birthday card contest instead?  I was thinking of an AR DVD of choice for the winner(s).  Let me know what you think and I'll start getting things ready since Feb isn't to far away. 

Pam, your idea of an AR calendar for the winner of the Christmas card contest was great!  I will keep that in mind for next year.  That will give me some time to work on the calendar(s) so it will be worth the effort when someone enters their hard work.

Ignore the name Duncan Heath and write Melanie Parker instead. Whoever DH was, MP is his personal assistant now. The old address is still floating around all over the net, though.

How can I find out which theater is going to play snow cake when it comes out here.  I'm going NUTS waiting.  The only place I think it MIGHT play isn't telling if they're going to run it.  I might have to fly somewhere where it is playing to see it.  Either that or wait for the DVD.  Fortunately, my hubby just bought us a big flat screen tv so at least I'll get to enjoy it on a screen bigger than my little computer screen.
